I love Olympus and have 2 OM-1s with most pro lenses. This upgrade is a huge disappointment for me. Minor firmware improvements with increased buffer memory for higher price. Most of these could be added by firmware upgrade to OM-1, which very likely will never happen after introduction of Mark II. Not improving the video features is also a lost opportunity. The new 150-600 mm rebranded full frame Sigma lens, which can not even keep up with the highest frame rates of OM-1 or OM-1 II, for double of the price of the E or L mount versions is even more disappointing. It shows that OM SYSTEM is not doing R&D and just wants to full the loyal customers and make more money. Very sad. The only reasons I am still with the system are the 300 m F4 Pro and 150-400 f45 TC1.25x lenses, which are amazing and very portable with OM-1.
For a general photography enthusiast, there is nothing here that is worth the tremendous expense. I guess my E-M5 Mark II will be my last M43 camera. Love M43, but the constant wildlife push does not appeal to the masses.
was this video recorded also using OM-1 II? I like the colors and sharpness of the video. Especially the close up when you are talking and holding the camera. Which camera did you use to record yourself? Did you color graded the video?
@@EspenHelland Thanks for the response. There are not many people who take video with OM system. Many of us besides taking wildlife photos we also like to take wildlife videos. It would be great if you could make a video about best video settings in the camera, video setting or project settings on the video editor and tips to color grading OM system logs. Just an idea. Thanks
The graduated filter sounds interesting. It sounds like a lot of software updates which I'm hoping will be available for the OM-1. I'm super interested ti hear more about the 100-600 lens though.
I have just jumped from full frame to M43. OM1 during Boxing Day sales. They kept this launch pretty well under wraps. Oh well…. This could go either way. Sales will be ok due to EM owners now making the decision to upgrade or people won’t see the value and sales will be poor. Even if OM systems gave owners like us the option to update our firmware for new features for a reasonable fee, I would.
I hope they did some real improvement work on the ND, on my EM1X, the Live ND is closed to useless and I regret every single time not having a real filter with me, to me so far those Live ND, high res crap remains as marketing BS. who shoot landscape with absolutely nothing move in the frame? no trees no wind? LOL,
But how exactly do you pick one bird out of a group of 8 (or more, or less) in the frame. What are the exact button presses to re-select the target you want? I'm really getting to the question of how quick can you re-select the exact target? Be nice if it is as simple as moving the joystick with your thumb to the bird you want and pushing the joystick in?
A question for you. We who are pensioners cannot afford to upgrade. So, is there any point in upgrading Olympus m1 markII to Olympus m1 mark III for shooting birds in flight?
Here I am debating on used em1 3, em1x and 100-400 or stretching for a used om-1 and 75-300 primarily for birds and the om-1 mk2 drops. Hopefully used prices come down on the om-1. The mk2 has some very interesting computational features. It's beyond my budget but I hope it's a success and future releases across the lineup wow more people.
Useful video clip Espen. The OM-1 mark II has little advantage for me and could have been mostly covered by a software upgrade on the OM-1. Just an OM System rebranding exercise. As for the 150-600mm lens. This is a Sigma which is not sold by Sigma since they no longer support any further M4/3rds lens development. Since I have the 150-400mm and both TCs I can obtain all the focal length I need. I will wait for the OM-1X and a 500mm prime lens with TC attachment capability if OM Systems ever decide to go into the high level end of the market. I will not be buying either of the new OM System products and I am currently looking at the Panasonic G9 mark II for the video capability. Keep on posting your excellent wildlife video clips 👌😊
I use M lenses on a M camera. And I used to shoot G9 and GFX8 with a 12-40 f:2,8 and a 75 f:1,8 Olympus lenses + a 25mm Panasonic. Frankly speaking, the magic of M4/3 is not the body, even if the G9 was awesome to shoot with, but the lenses, especially Olympus ones. The size / quality ratio is unmatched. Only some Leica M lenses can compare, but not at the same price !
I am racking my brain here. I don’t shoot video and I feel I just bought the z6iii wasting my money and should have kept my and maybe have kept my OM-1. I now have the NIKKOR 180-600, 24-120, and the 105. I just felt I was missing something with my Micro4/3. All of my pictures seemed soft when comparing to FF pictures. I guess I pixel peeped too much (which I guess was a habit I picked up from watching too many TH-cam videos. But really, shouldn’t the m4/3’s pictures be just as sharp and crisp as FF? And how about the DR, I’m seeing that the DR on the OM is better than FF on my z6iii. I do shoot wildlife, I shoot landscape, and I do shoot macro. so I’m your honest opinion, should I trade my z6iii back to the OM-1? I had the 12-40, 40-150, and a sigma 56. Or just keep the Z6iii and get used to it? I’m no professional, but I do love to print some and I do love to post my pictures. Help me make up my mind, lol.
Are there any improvements with noise in high iso? I’m still using the EM1 Mark 2, and the highest I go is 800, with birds this has always been a bit of a problem for me
I use iso 6400 iso all the time to get fast shutter speeds for birds in low light, hardly any noise if you expose well. if there is a little noise then Adobe noise reduction or Dxo PureRAW takes care of it easily
@@LisaTom.PhotosI regularly shoot the same ISO with an EM1X, I also use ISO's above that providing I am not heavily cropping the image in post. DXO is literally a game changer.
Please pass on a message to OMSystems that those of us that have invested in the OM1 Mark 1 (in my case, two months ago) would appreciate a firmware upgrade that incorporates some of these features. Since that is what they have promised to do.
You didn´t mention anything about if the new camera has overcome the superflaw of earlier modells regarding to AF: the inabillity to program to buttons with different AF modes. Example af-c with one af-point on the top button and af-c wtith bird recognition and full coverage of the sensor (and override over the usual top button) on the af-on button on the back. Other example used by wildlife shoters for around 10 years or more is the common double back button focus with different AF-modes on two different back buttons. For me this inabillity makes the om-1 unusable in many wildlife photo situations.
@@LisaTom.Photos Yes you can. And you can also asign a button to togle between bird-af and regular af-c. But this is a bad solution because on OM-1 and Olympus you can´t do the changes when AF and tracking are operating-you have to let up your index finger or your thumb and inactivate the AF and then do the changes (on two different buttons) and then activate the AF again. The result is obvious-you loose the bird/animal. Even if you train a lot it takes the extra tenths of a second that makes the oppurtunity disappear! On my Ni/Ca -cameras i can make the changes so much faster and the AF and tracking is active during the changes. I just have to press ,for example, the af-on button while i focus with the index finger top button. Then the af-on button that is programmed with bird AF overrides the top button (that has got another programming, for example AF c with the middle AF-point and no bird AF). Instant changes between the modes!
I skipped the OM-1 because the EM1-m3 does what I need...for the most part. The bird AI is the only thing I would like. It sounds like it got better, and the addition of 14bit high res mode for landscapes might put me over the edge.
But will 14 bit give richer colours? As I understand it, the extra information may provide better colour and tonal gradation especially in shadows, but richer colours generally, I'm not so sure. For images in flatter light that can be normally exposed, I suspect that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for the human eye to discern any improvement. I say this because I can take my current (and very old) E-M1 mk I with its 12 bit 16 MP sensor and put it up against my more recent EOS R with its 14 bit 30 MP sensor and in normal lighting get pretty much indistinguishable photos. So, yes, I think the 14 bit advancement is definitely beneficial, especially in challenging light, but I would challenge the idea that human discernable colour in average shooting situations would be universally improved. Yes, that's nitpicking, but it's important to communicate things realistically. Am I interested in the OM-1 Mk II? Yes, absolutely, but I need a realistic understanding of its capabilities. What I would really like to know is just how much of a DR improvement I could expect from the new camera over older models when faced with challenging light such as you find commonly in northern winter scenes. As a photographic professional working in Scotland and Norway, I am sure you know what I'm talking about. Those bright cloudless skies in very cold conditions juxtaposed against the darks of a boreal forest for instance. The original OM-D E-M1 does tend to struggle a little in those conditions--although that sensor has surprisingly good highlight recovery when you know its limits. Shadows tend to be a more challenging problem. That said, for long exposure low light shooting, I actually find the E-M1 to be generally superior to my EOS R--less sensor noise and more predictable cleaner results as long as it is tripod stabilized long exposures at base or slightly elevated ISOs. Anyway, I do enjoy your videos and I appreciate your thoughts on this and other photographic topics, I just wonder at the colour claim a little. Cheers.
We put some extra ram in it, change the name and raise the price. Then all we need are "specialists" like this one who is parroting what Om system told him to say. Et voila, a "new" camera!
I really liked this channel and have enjoyed Espen's other videos a lot; but this video feels like just shilling the very disappointing mark ii because he is an Olympus Ambassador.
Small, very incremental updates aimed at a very specific niche. Competitors are moving further away from the OMD. FF lens adapted to the platform instead of one that would take benefit of the small sensor. If anyone hoped for more than really slow death of this format, he is getting his answer.
Why are you here regurgitating this nonsense (evidence of your claims please, provide links to independently produced resolution figures for this new lens which you haven't even used). You really need to grow up.
Thanks Espen, OM System is building a new brand, which is not possible in this competitive market without innovations, I'm glad they used the resources to show the brand is still alive. Olympus and OM System make great gear
If they release a firmware update for the OM-1 with all of the features that are possible on the old hardware, which is most of them, for somewhere between $0 and $200 I’ll be happy. If they pretend these features aren’t possible on an OM-1… I’ll be quite motivated to switch systems.
I guess you as an engineer know what you talk about, and me as systems engineer don't understand computer physics. I for one, hope the coming firmware update will give me a quarter of the functions, and not to much slower than in the mark 2 with double RAM and reworked IBIS. I know that updating the IBIS with 10% needs physics change, if they just didn't program the IBIS wrongly in the OM1. Hopefully, we see a great sales for the updated camera and a new firmware for our older version in about two months. That's what that sales needs as minimum time difference to not go bankrupt after all the whining on the internet.
Spending 1,000$ more for OM-1 mark II, makes no sense if your budget is about OM-1 + 300 mm F4 Pro. These upgrades are no worthy. Like, literally people should not think about new version in this price if they already have OM-1 or changes systems and would think about pay for that. I was excited about OM-1 mark II, but when saw the price...... boyy..... heeelll noo...
I am sorry and as much as I like your usual content and opinion, but this sounds pretty much like sugarcoating a mediocre "new" camera that hold features that should have been already there in the original OM-1.
Hello, Jose from Puerto Rico. I have the previous model, and to be honest, this is a disappointment. If they were going to upgrade this camera, they should've improved the sensor or move to a bigger sensor like Full Frame. I'm not saying Micro 4/3 is bad, but they apply a cripple hammer to their product. If you swap for another micro 4/3 lens like the Panasonic, it's not able to use the full capacity of those lenses and vice versa. Also, for what I've seen in other reviews, the focusing isn't much of an improvement. I feel they've disrespected the users of their system. I'm still learning mine, and now they come out with this. Furthermore, I'm not a professional photographer, but I do appreciate well-made products and this is something that could've been included as a firmware update to their current customers who, like me, own the previous camera. As I heard in other forums, they will discontinue making the previous model as soon as inventory is cleared. This move also makes me wonder if servicing the previous model will be an issue. It's a shame, since Olympus has had such a great heritage for so many decades. Down the line, I'll probably switch to another system.
A lot of discussion around the lens being a rebranded Sigma 150-600 at a ridiculous premium price with the weight to go with it. I won't be buying either when other systems have combos for 2/3 of the price of this pair. Really feels like OM systems are taking the piss to justify the costs of their name change. I'm being sarcastic of course but it seems to be the theme.
Pay attention to the video, subject detection and "sticky" following through branches grass etc is improved over MK1, suggest you also watch "wildman" Rouse reviews on both camera and new lens
VERY DISAPPOINTED! I'm using Olympus since 10 years, having a lot of fun and good images. Made a huge and expensive upgrade to the OM-1 and 150-400mm/4.5 Pro. Great gear but WAITING SINCE 2 YEARS for a substantial firmware upgrade, especially for AF. Until now ow: Nothing but an "invitation" to a buy new body. Will they update the OM-1 firmware now? Probably not as they would loose a significant argument to sell the mk2, right? Dear Espen, I like your enthusiasm about nature and photography. You know me. Don't take my comment personally, please. It's not about you, but about OM systems behaviour to clients.
100% agree, they should have offered an upgrade via firmware even if it is paid for, before bringing this camera to market. The original AF system could be sorted within the confines of the sensors capabilities!
My initial thoughts: - don't trust anyone who is provided a free loaner in exchange for their advertising - The OM-1 was a disappointment- countless firmware updates and still has bugs - overpriced I no longer trust OMDS based on my OM-1 experience. Hard pass.

Thanks, I used the original OM-1 and the OM-5 and colour graded yes.
Thanks
The Om-1 Mark II is a firmware update in a new guise. If they release a new OM-1 for every firmware update, it will be expensive to photograph. 🥵
I'll cover this in a video, but basically it's programming a button and holding it and using a dial
Dear Espen: I would like, after paying for it, if you could send me the configuration you use in the OM 1, for bird photography. Regards.
Hi Francisco, I do have a course on all my configurations here: bit.ly/3PERR0C
If not I also have some videos in my library on this. cheers
This camera makes me want to try micro four thirds for the first time 😊
The OM-1 is an excellent camera, save yourself money unless you need specific functions that the OM-1 II offers over the OM-1
Did they fix the C-AF+tracking? On the OM-1 it's very poor so I always use C-AF.
A question for you. We who are pensioners cannot afford to upgrade. So, is there any point in upgrading Olympus m1 markII to Olympus m1 mark III for shooting birds in flight?
Hi Bo, I think you’d do better upgrading to the OM-1 for shooting birds in flight. Hopefully you should be able to get a good used deal on it.
Did they tell you what’s coming to the original OM-1 with firmware updates? Seems much is just software.
Sorry, I don't know
Amazing images and video footage
Thank you 🙂
Can the settings that I have on my OM-1 be transferred to the OM-1 Mark II ?
no :-(
Unfortunately not, didn't take too long to set it up side by side with my OM-1 though
@@LisaTom.Photos DXO software is like a new camera in this regard!
I think it's similar to the OM-1 which is pretty good, but I haven't tested them on this
You need a Røde Wireless Pro or something for your audio.
I did actually use them, not sure what happened. Just invested in some new DJI wireless ones
For me this inabillity makes the om-1 unusable in many wildlife photo situations.
you can assign a custom focusing grid to a button, so you can have two AF targets easily on the back
@@LisaTom.Photos Yes you can.
OM is making some great gear!! Thanks for your review
Excelente video
Thank you 🙂
The (P)review I trust most 👍

Yes

@@HokKan 感謝您! 我指的是錄影,並不是拍照,感謝您!
Yes, I highlighted in my video :) new AF is better and can be customised.
Did they add ship AF? One thing I never understood of the subject AF. There's cars/motorcycles, trains but no ships 😳
Thanks. (Sound isnt great here.)
I know, something happened with my mic, sorry.
@@EspenHelland no worries - I see you pinned a comment about it shortly after. Love your content, thanks 👍🏼
Excellent
I'll wait 18 months it will be half-price
exactly, I hope more people will think twice before beeing in rush to buy this in this price.

Good optimistic attitude. Go you!
The MOST "Letdown" camera of the year!! Just re-badging and firmware update not much more.
Liking the OM1 II, but don't care about the 150-600mm lens.
Its 200 more than the mki? 😂
What's wrong with the audio?
Not sure what happened, but just invested in some new wireless mics
I am sorry and as much as I like your usual content and opinion, but this sounds pretty much like sugarcoating a mediocre "new" camera that hold features that should have been already there in the original OM-1.
That's unavoidable with Ambassadors.
Mind numbingly boring narrative obviously 🙄 the outline written by OM Systems as every OM System Ambassador has delivered the same dialog.
From what I've seen a read about it, it's a waste of money if you already have mark 1. Even human ai isn't your thing 😉
Man, it's 1,000$ more, THAT A LOT.. I would understand 250$ or so, but 1000? No. I would also expect om-1 mark I price drop.
@@pentagramyt417 I have om-1 mk1, so I don't see enough reason to switch. Probably just get the new lens instead of my 100-400mm.
Pay attention to the video, subject detection and "sticky" following through branches grass etc is improved over MK1, suggest you also watch "wildman" Rouse reviews on both camera and new lens
@@pentagramyt417 it's 200 more than the mki so I suppose you understand then?
My initial thoughts:
- don't trust anyone who is provided a free loaner in exchange for their advertising
- The OM-1 was a disappointment- countless firmware updates and still has bugs
- overpriced
I no longer trust OMDS based on my OM-1 experience.
Hard pass.
All this software goodies should be just firmware update and to come to OM-1.
All OM Ambassadors praising ridiculously expensive camera that should have been released as a firmware upgrade. Not an honest review.
