Just update your camera through the OI share app from your phone, I updated my OM5 and OM-1 within 5 mins. It works perfectly without any issues. I have been doing that two years ago with the app being able to update the camera. It is much easier. No issues at all. Japanese camera manufacturers have been notoriously bad with computer software for years, just don’t be bothered with it.

Something missed in this discussion is that OM Workspace preserves your primary customizations after a firmware update is because saves that information prior the the update and then restores them afterward. You can use this feature to create a library of specific configurations and load them as needed. All of this is only possible because of using a computer to do the updates rather than the in-camera memory -card based process of some other brands. I have two matching bodies and I can update the second one to match the first using this process. It's really innovative and allows for greater management of these highly configurable cameras.

Got the same problem with the OM App on the MacBook Pro with M1 chip. It would not let me install the firmware on the OM-5. Used the I-phone app to do. It worked fine.

You can do an SD card firmware update (that's what service centres technicians do!) and you can use OIShare also. Nothing to do with the camera really. Mac is partly to blame here and Mac issues have been discussed online for months. OMDS guilty of not better documenting those issues and not preventing firmware updates on incompatible computer setups that I agree and understand your frustration.

If a camera gets bricked during the act of installing a manufacturer’s firmware update it shouldn’t matter if the camera is still under warranty or not.

I was very happy with my OM1 until this last weekend it bricked when I simply changed lenses, both olympus pro. I am left wondering how reliable will it be if I spend the $ to send it in to be "reset". Why cant there be some hidden button for a hard reset? I had this camera about 18 months, now I have an artifact.

We attempted to update two OM-1 cameras yesterday via Workspace and had quite a scare on the first try but eventually both cameras were updated. It repeatedly would not recognize the camera, the problem being you had to confirm the highlighted “Storage” before it would proceed with the update process. It took at least four minutes to process and continually warned not to touch or unplug the camera. The camera made bumping and grinding noises in the end process. When the 1.6 was finally loaded both camera’s time & dates had been erased as well as changing all four custom settings shutter speeds to 1/250. I thought I had lost all my presets but I had not but my viewfinder layout had changed. I checked out both cameras and they now work fine and have been successfully updated to firmware 1.6. The update was done with a PC and not our MacBook Air M2 because by good fortune had read a warning somewhere that the Mac could brick the camera. The 2nd camera went faster and the process looked somewhat different. It was the first time updating firmware that my wife and I thought we could brick our camera. We love the cameras but this all seemed unnecessary for what is usually a routine process with other cameras. Sorry for your bad experience.

OM Systems still offer firmware updates for a number of older cameras including E-M1X, E-M1 Mk II, E-M1 Mk III, E-M5 Mk III, Pen F. I think that is reasonable given the age of any previous models. I won't comment on Apple security measures - other than to say I'm not a fan.

It may be a Mac issue, but when I first got the new Mac with an M1 chip, most vendors would say this app, software etc is not recommended for M1 users or they would say they are working on an update, nothing on OM System website to warn the user. It is up to OM systems to stay up to date on any computer operating changes, it is part of doing business on computers. There is only one Mac OS and thousands of software companies using that OS, Apple is not in business to babysit OM Systems or anyone else. They get the memo of the OS changes and it is up to OM Systems to stay up to date.

I just followed the instructions on the iOS app to update my OM-1 ii on the weekend and it seemed to automatically shut off during the update and bricked itself. I wonder if it’s an issue with the sleep setting, if this is the case, I would think that there should be a safeguard against this happening.

I updated mine but used Windows. However, I've been hearing the same thing about not putting some of the new features in the older cameras. Saying that, I've been looking at the Panasonic Lumix G9 MKII, and as all the Olympus glass will fit the G9, I just need to buy a body.

    • @donaldpirie5485

I took the plunge and sold my OM-1 and bought a G9ii. To be fair, both are terrific cameras. There some aspects of the OM1 I shall definitely miss. It seemed to focus faster and locked on better. The G9ii seems sluggish to me, but the images are just as good - perhaps even better in low light with high ISO. I still have an OM5 and a few Olympus lenses, so have a foot in both camps. I do have more confidence in Panasonic long term though. They seem to have a clearer direction and appear to be more in tune with their customer base.

I would suggest waiting to see if these rumors prove to be true. In my experience, about 98% of Internet rumors are false. OM System has announced that they will be releasing another firmware update for the original OM-1 this fall which is to include AF enhancements. I do think they didn't handle support for the original OM-1 or the packaging of the OM-1 Mk II very well, but I hope they have learned from this. As for the G9II, I can't see myself supporting a company which took six years to update the G9 and then used a recycled Full Frame body rather than making a proper MFT-sized both for a "flag ship" camera. That sends a very negative message to me - much more worrisome than OM System firmware updates.

  • @Brightsparks1960

Your points you make are valid however lets not put the whole blame on OM Systems. I have decades of large corporate IT exposure at Director and Technical level and Apple MACs are viewed as 'the work of the devil' and despised by many in corporate IT. Thats why most pcs in the world are running Windows OS - not perfect - but much better than Apple MAC OS in terms of ease of administration. Hopefully OMS will resolve promptly with Apple as the cameras are fantastic. My OM1 updated perfectly, as you would expect, via Windows.

Right on. I spent a multi-decade career in IT management and support and completely agree about Apple and MACs. I just recently bought an iPad for easy field photo editing because of the high quality screen. That's the first Apple product I've every owned.

It's not Apple's fault, it is up to OM systems to update their compatibility. All software developers are notified when Computer operating systems are updated, upgraded and re-designed so all these companies can make there required changes to stay up to date and relevant.... It seems OM systems is dropping the ball in this game.

I don't have to be a fanboi to offer a comment. If your dealer is willing to take the camera back, they should be willing to do the firmware update for you or to exchange the camera for an updated one, no need to throw the camera out with the bathwater though that's your prerogative.
As it happens I run a PC and had no particular problem with the update, though as noted in these comments apparently one can also do it via smartphone app. I've no idea whether there is an Apple phone app that can handle it.

I have three Olympus cameras but all are from the real Olympus not this new OM-Systems stuff. You better believe I won’t be doing any more firmware updates even it they come out with some for the real Olympus stuff. I have both Mac and Windows computers and I think that the Windows system handles things better than the Mac. My MacBook Pro is always throwing in roadblocks of one sort or another when I download stuff. Also I don’t think that Mac gives the bang for the buck that they used to. My new Windows desktop has twice as much RAM, SSD and mechanical drives and a faster/more cores processor than the same priced Mac desktop that I was looking at. I also don’t particularly like the Mac keyboard and their horrible mouse

Do it through your phone if running Apple. It’s not OM System’s fault and it will soon be sorted for Macs running their own chip. Quite frankly your rant seems quite childish, rather like throwing your toys out of the pram. These things happen. Deal with it. In business there are bigger issues than this on a daily basis and they get sorted. I have industrial equipment, for instance, that relies on sat-nav for accurate work but it was fine in its box all Winter but on the second day of use last week it lost its Bluetooth connection. Rang the technical support and the Bluetooth module needs replacing at £180+VAT, taking about a week to turn around because I have to send the computer away to be securely paired with the Bluetooth module. I don’t sulk. Don’t throw my toy out of the pram. I find a way around it, just as anyone responsible and productive does, and get on with the job regardless. YOU have plenty of alternative cameras so use those while you wait for a replacement or repaired camera. It is a minor blip in your week, an inconvenience not a catastrophe.
