The dark "tea" that Armin thought smelled great was coffee! Coffee comes from a tropical plant. The baseball references. The rifles and clothing from SIXTY years ago in Ymir's flashback. There are quite a number of other clues.
My favourite is the canned herring. Herring is a saltwater fish, and you also need commercial and global infrastructure to manufacture canned foods to sell. It’s also amazing how they make us suspicious of Ymir for recognizing the language on the can, and not think twice about the fact that Reiner recognizes what herring and canned food are himself.

@@enfyts7544 Don't forget the "Ape Titan" part. Ymir was the first one who called "Beast Titan" as "Ape Titan".
The conversation between Eren, Ymir, Bertholdt and Reiner in the forest is such a huge clue. Eren was clueless because he never heard the word "Ape" before. Because there is no ape/monkey in the walls!
@@enfyts7544 the can is how I got this revelation. From then on I knew there was a civilization capable of mass production, probably with millions of people in it and refined technology. So this episode just confirmed everything to me
- During the Scouts' stay in castle Utgard, they find certain items that have labels on them. Unfortunately, nobody seems to understand the language. Aside from Ymir, who finds a can of herring and is able to identify it. Herring is a seawater fish.
- The Scouts nickname the ape-looking titan 'Beast titan', since they have never seen an ape. Ymir, however, refers to him as 'a monkey'. Eren repeats: 'a monkey?' In the original Japanese text, Ymir says 'monkey' using kanji, but Eren says it using katakana, implying that he just repeated the word without understanding its meaning.
- During return to Shiganshina, Armin finds a coffee grinder and three cups with residual 'black liquid' that he can't identify. A coffee grinder also has a cameo during Reiner's flashback to Marcel being eaten.
- When fighting in Shiganshina, Reiner is wearing modern-looking military boots.
- The Beast Titan likes using baseball terms. Baseball as a sport was only developed during 19th century.
- At the very start of the story, Grisha is credited for successfully curing an epidemic in Shiganshina. Needless to say, the level of development inside the Walls is roughly medieval-to-late Renaissance level, so it's unlikely that they had modern understanding of disease or modern medicine. Of course Grisha brought that knowledge from outside of the Walls.
-Ymir’s hometown is outside the walls. The architecture is different from what is found inside the walled cities. The uniforms of the soldiers who arrest Ymir are not Military Police uniforms and are from a different time period than the uniform we see in the walls. Most of the technology in the walls resembles that of the society in the 1800s. Ymir’s town uniforms resemble uniforms worn in the 1860s or so. This implies that Ymir’s hometown was more advanced than the walls 60 years ago.
These and more are the facts that you can find while rewatching the show. There are soo many things early on in the show with a huge impact. But you can only understand it if you know what's coming...

Reiner has modern military boots? I never noticed, I have to check that.
Also, Grisha brought knowledge how to cure disease from outside, but he also probably brought the same disease with him in the first place, because people in walls didn't have immune system prepared for it.
"medieval to late renaissance" is very incorrect. Paradis is late 18th century at the LEAST
Another example is the beast titan telling miche they speak the same language, indicating he knows about other human languages (something that doesn’t exist within the walls)

I like how the whole basement was actually a normal basement and the most important thing was books over 199 people died for three books....I was expecting something big epic but the reveal reminded me that not all life changing moments are dramatic.....Great writing as usual.

AoT just keeps giving you plot twist that you can't imagine, but it makes perfectly sense of all the story, while in the mean time, all the character are themselves, not what the story wants them to be, but still it all the characters that shapes the whole story.
I do feel the same way that I'm glad I'm part of the journey with survey corps and learned such a great story of AoT. it is soooo good in many ways and all the hidden topics it showed us about, races, humanity, war, leadership, friendship, different people in different situations, and so on.
I've found that AOT also themes itself around the perspective of the audience. It gives us a thrilling war narrative with monstrous antagonists and suddenly reveals that they're human and complex, having us wonder the justification behind it all.
It's just like the way that war is seen in real life, and the audience is the 'character' that goes through an arc.
The way the world just expands is really mind blowing

I actually think it would've been bad if Erwin made it to the basement, bc Kenny says everyone has to be drunk on something to keep moving forward, and as soon as Erwin knew the truth, he would have nothing to live for, and probably give up. Which also explains why Levi made the choice to let Erwin die, because he knew there was nothing left for him, whereas Armin has aspirations beyond that.

Same I feel so emotional when it comes to Erwin. I can't help but to hate floch when he said that in order to defeat titans, they need a devil which is Erwin, wherein fact erwin has no choice but to be a devil himself :(

They hinted at a civilization similar to ours. Remember when they found the cups, and said it was a black liquid similar to tea that smelled nice. That's coffee. The Beast Titan referencing Baseball terms (a Perfect Game) and Pitch. He had perfect shotput technique. Annie had real life martial arts/grappling skills. Among other things.
your reactions are sooo genuine that it makes me want to watch aot again. this basement ep had been teased to us since season 1 then i kinda forgot it for a while since a LOOOOOT of revelations, obstacles, sacrifices happened in order for us to get here! Ahh the basement...it's kind of funny that the episode you've been waiting for since episode 1 doesn't actually contain what you're hoping for. Still, how the way to the basement and the individual emotions and conversations of the characters are presented is absolutely brilliant...and the cliffhanger for the next episode more than pays off
Actually, it's a fun thing that the clue about world timeline inconsistency was given to us much earlier - remember the glass syringe Grisha used on Eren in flashbacks? While AoT takes place around the 1800s, the syringe itself was invented in 1853, but the glass modification of it has appeared only in the beginning of 1890s :)

Yep. Photographs weren't invented until 1826, so I'd say this show takes place in their equivalent of our 1820's or earlier. The photograph looks 1890's, but weirdly enough, the clothing worn by the children in the post-credits scene resemble the 1930's, and we know that took place _before_ the photograph was taken since that's a flashback to Grisha's childhood.

you're probably my favorite AOT reactors so far.. you're only 2, yet still both have the brains to understand everything correctly, and the best part, after every chapter you analize and theorize a lot 👌
Agreed. I've watched plenty of YTbers react to AOT but there's something about these guys. Their reactions are energetic, but tame. They're inquisitive, but not dumb. They float within that little grey area which I find very binge worthy.
I swear one of the most powerful images from this show was the shot of Carla's shoe still on the ground, weathered and beaten. There's some kind of symbolism there but I can't quite figure it out
Their face expression when they saw the airship was so on point. When I saw it, my heart also broke, like, they have that civilization while our main characters had to be suffered? From last 3 episodes to this ep, it was just too much.
And I like your analysis about how the beast titan was interested in ODM gear and thinking of they having boats to get to our place makes the story even crazier

The world inside the wall is a level of technology that doesn't even know pictures.
However, in the world where Grisha lived, there was an airship even when Grisha was young (expected about 20 to 30 years ago).
what a gap of tech.
Exactly like it was promised from the very beginning, finding what's in the basement will change everything and they did a great job setting up the weight of that with this episode. The sequence of them walking through the town, the music choice and the nervousness/slight hesitation to open the book was perfect.
The sequence of Eren and Mikasa walking through Shiganshina is probably my favorite in the whole series
To be honest, this was the best S03E19 reaction by far in the internet. And civilization far ahead than others is not a new thing. In our world too, you might have known some unknown little islands where humans are still living like historic era. They don't even know what is a technology.
Yeah! Sentinel island right? I think that was its name. Let alone not know what technology is you can't even approach them without them trying to kill you or succeeding at doing so like with two fishers that got too close on their small boat.

I feel you. Well even if I try to explain it to myself, it doesn't help that much because it just fry my brain so much because of information overload. I rewatched these episodes pertaining to the basement for about three times then I kinda get the gist of it that it's about racism and cycle of hatred but I still think it still much more than that.

Two things you missed from previous seasons : when Eren tries the 3D maneuvering gear (the broken one) and falls on his head, later on we see the smoke coming out of his head. Indicating he was healing thanks to his Titan power. Right before Ymir transforms into a Titan we can see Bertholt about to bite his hand.
the next 3 and last episodes of this season are one of my favorites. and season 4 is going to be lit🔥

My favorite clue about this other civilization, is that everyone from our guys who sees the Beast titan says something like : "it looks like an animal/beast, it's covered in fur"
But the moment Ymir asks Reiner and Bluecheese she is like "hey what's with the monkey?" And Eren is like "what? What monkey?" We are led to believe it's because he didn't see the beast titan but really it's because there are no monkeys where our guys live!!! So right there you can tell that Reiner, Bernard and Ymir come from the same place outside the walls.
