Well, this was a surprise but not unwelcome. It is nice to see you'll be under sail again coming up, even if it isn't Squalo - yet!
I'm still intrigued by the engine saga that you hinted at previously, as it obviously played a part in the worry you had going into this. Glad though that while the interior was a little shabbier than expected, this engine wasn't.
Yes, we are glad we get to go sailing again. It’s been a while.
We definitely didn’t want to take on another project, so we were a bit worried that despite what the owner said about the vibration of the engine, in reality it would be much worse. But it wasn’t, engine started right away, it was emitting a bit of white smoke, there was some vibration as expected, but we believe replacing mounts will solve this issue and it shouldn’t be a big job. We definitely don’t want to spend too much time on this boat, Squalo is our priority.
And in terms of the other engine saga, the one with the Perkins from Squalo…it has been giving us nightmares. But we think we finally came to a decision. This will be coming up soon in one of the videos.

Yesss! 😁 I guess we won’t go crazy with spending too much time refreshing Byvind, she will probably need a bit of varnish here and there, some TLC for sure. In a couple of years when Squalo is ready we will sell Byvind on. For now it is a perfect place to stay, place where we can cook etc 😊 AND we get to go sailing every now and again. Just to keep us in the loop 😉 but I have to admit a caravan has crossed our minds and was an option before we decided to go for a small yacht.
@@sailingsqualo a caravan would have done perfectly well and have more headroom for Ziggy
But you can't sail a caravan now and then and the resail on a caravan would be much less than you paid Byvind will be perfect all round 😁 I wish you all the happiness you wish for yourselves to enjoy her x
@robertmcgregor7233 yes, the headroom would have been better but no chance to sail until we finish Squalo.
So it ticked more boxes ;)

Caravan has been on our mind before we settled for a small yacht. But I am glad we decided to get a boat. 🙌 once Squalo is ready we will sell it on. In the meantime we will look after her and give her some TLC. not too much though so that we don’t end up with two projects instead of one 😅 we find it hard as it is with one refit and full time job!

I have looked at used boat prices in Norway (Finn.nok). They seem to almost give away older sailing boats.
Few people are curious 👀 we will share how much we paid in another video. But you are right, boats are generally cheaper than what we found in England and I guess also more looked after. For similar boat here in the UK we would have to pay £3-4k more!!
I'm so curious about the auction thing. Did you have someone check the boat out before you placed a bid, or was the whole thing sight unseen?
The one we used was a site called Bootveiling, and they have an auction running each month. During that period they set up one date during which all potential buyers can view the boat if they like. We did not get to see the boat as the day we started bidding on her was actually the last day of the auction. So we took a bit of a risk there. But generally one can see the boat beforehand. Or if it is perhaps difficult to arrange to see it yourself, you could always find a surveyor that is local and get a basic survey.
Another thing to note is that once you win the auction, seller can still refuse the highest bid if not satisfied with the outcome of the auction.
@@sailingsqualo Yes, I've seen their online listings, but never really known if one could trust the Bootveling site. Good to see that it worked out for you! I've become so jaded about boat listing photos that I don't think I would have dared place a bid without seeing the boat first. I love the way you guys just decide and get things done! You'll be on the water in the Oyster before you know it.
I know it sounds a bit reckless to bid in an auction almost blindly 😅 I would always recommend for someone to visit the boat first though. In our instance this isn’t going to be a boat we will travel the world in, she is merely a place where we can crash for the night when in the boatyard.
