  • Acne scarring is an incredibly common and frustrating problem amongst patients I see in my dermatology clinic. In this video, I talk about the most evidence based ways to cure acne scars. We discuss acne scar prevention, how acne scars are formed, microneedling, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and also creams to treat acne scars.

As a 30 year old woman, acne scarring has truly changed my quality of life for the worst. I don’t date, I don’t go out much, and I feel very self conscious. It sucks when im in the car and sun is shining and it highlights the scars. I’ve been suffering for over 10 years. It’s hard to deal with. I went to a aesthetician and received a chemical peel, but they gave me the wrong one and that did nothing for my face. Between the depression, self consciousness, and I feel like I can’t live a full life because of the scars on my face.

Initially I did it every month (if not maybe every 2 weeks, I am not sure). This helped especially against the Acne. But the effect is very lasting, so currently every 3-4 months is sufficient for me. This is also due to "condition" having goten better. So now I do for the scarring. I found that the laser worked better than the needling. Although; the needling worked best at a higher intensity with a deeper piercing (deeper piercing will hurt more though). I can't tell you much about the laser. I only know what my doc cals them. There are some that help better against acne, some better against scarring. Laser-vampire-needling is not recommended by me though. All in all i wish my previous doc didnt keep his mout shut and told me about this. It was my best life decision yet. Truly life changing for me. Pls remember the experience may vary.

I went on spironolactone 50mg, Retin-A, azelaic acid from the dermatologist. This worked great but a few years we went to 100mg and kept the others but included a benzoyl peroxide face wash. I'm thinking of getting more sessions just to hopefully get me a smoother skin. You're right, INSURANCE IS CRAZY FOR NOT HAVING THESE TYPE OF CONDITION BEING COVERED ! I think it’s also important to note those who are considering Lasering that many clinics use lasers that work well with those on the Fitzpatrick scale of 1-2 (skin type) and can cause scaring to those with more melanin rich skin. Those with more hyperpigmentation prone skin have to opt for a laser known as Nd:YAG which is often more expensive. At least that is my experience. Would be great to see an efficacy comparison between Nd:YAG and Microneedling so can channel the funds for the most effective treatment for those of darker skin tones.

    • @whitepaper5241

Yep. A fully ablative CO² fractional laser isn't suitable for Fitzpatrick scale 3 and darker. In my country, we use a mildly ablative CO² fractional laser because it's sunny all year and most people are on Fitzpatrick scale 3 and darker. It's not nearly as effective as the fully ablative ones, but it's quite effective for moderate pigmentation and mild scars. People with severe acne scars are usually given 2-4 treatments at once - they usually consist of subsicion, tca cross, prp, and CO² fractinal laser. And while insurance can't cover those treatments, it's fairly cheap to get those combined treatments - around $100-$300 here.

Ive done micro dermabrasion, chemical peels, microneedling, fully ablative laser resurfacing (that's under anesthesia, performed by a surgeon with 6 months heal time), subscision, and filler. I still have pretty severe scars. Nothing has worked for me. I do think the medical grade skincare I've been using has made a huge difference in texture. Ultimately, though, you just kind to have to learn to live with it. I've found that people really aren't that superficial in real life, unless they're young or generally shallow.

Hey dude, or shall I say Doctor Dude :) , I've had cystic acne scarring for over 20 years, and I agree with you that OTC products are very limited in effectiveness. In fact I found absolutely nothing disagreeable about any of your statements. You're quite helpful. After a year of Accutane about 5 years ago, the chance I'll get another acne cyst is probably around 95 percent reduced. I almost never see them, but am also using Retin A every day and have ever since Accutane cessation. Before that, I took Doxycyline every day for 15 years. Eventually I started hitting a wall getting it because suddenly everyone was saying that you can't take it for more than 3 months, and I couldn't get an Rx for it anymore, which motivated Accutane treatment. I was too scared of the extremely long and horrifying list of Accutane side effects, but I experienced virtually zero side effects from a year of Accutane treatment. Dry mouth and eyes is all I can remember from it. I wish I'd done it much sooner. From your suggestions I think I'll go with laser treatments. Is there any difference between "Fractional CO2 laser" and any other kind of laser treatment?

My box scars are very old and a very smalk area on my cheeks about 3/4 surface. I use vitam c and ordinary moisturizer with retinoid by Ordinary brand, and hyulornic acid as well. Will continue to do monthy treatments until i get desired smoothness.
