  • Hello lovelies, I have always been fascinated by dusting powders and love the old Hollywood glamourous beauty routine of dusting yourself. Below is a brief history of dusting powders.
As the access to soap and clean water increased, so did convenient bathing, and the American public began to place more importance on keeping their bodies smelling clean. Both men and women were increasingly working in crowded offices and factories, and people were spending more time together, socially. This focused attention on social perceptions of cleanliness. Previously, people had covered up body odors by using perfumes, rather than attempting to stop those odors. But by the late 1800s, perspiration, sour breath, and other body odors were increasingly perceived as socially unacceptable, as marks of poor hygiene, and as issues to be solved through the use of products.
    Youth dew:
    rstyle.me/+wVDhLZ3GbrFESOZzx0...
Estée wanted to find a way for women to buy their perfume, so in 1953 she created Youth-Dew, a bath oil that doubled as a skin perfume. This innovation took the cosmetics industry by storm, changing the way fragrance was sold and transforming the fledgling start-up company into a multimillion-dollar business.
    Blue Grass:
    rstyle.me/+_r1JTHQyA3ca4eK9W-...
Created sometimes around 1934 or 1936, the perfumer is George Fuchs (of Fragonard). Blue Grass was created to celebrate the scent of the grassy pasture fields where Arden bred her famous Thoroughbreds.
    White Shoulders:
    rstyle.me/+2hwv97j75fUZjmaKKx...
The design house of Evyan launched WHITE SHOULDERS sometime in the 1940s (dates vary from 1943 to 1949!). Very early on, the Evyan company was called by another name, albeit briefly- Hartnell. And so some of the older most original White Shoulders presentations are bottled under a Hartnell label. White Shoulders is soft, floral, and powdery, a genuinely romantic fragrance inspired by classic French perfumes. It's for special evenings when you're dancing until dawn and for days spent dreaming about such romantic nights. At its heart, it's a celebration of fragrant white flowers: jasmine, lily, gardenia, lily of the valley, tuberose, and orris, sweet, creamy, and thoroughly intoxicating. And even with its complex base notes of civet, oakmoss, amber, benzoin, and musk, it manages to convince you that a spring romance is just around the corner.
    White Diamonds:
    rstyle.me/+m3W3oXmXCMo8PAX0oO...
As the saying goes, diamonds are a girl's best friend. For Elizabeth Taylor, this was especially the case. The Hollywood legend, known for her love of the more beautiful things in life, never left the house without two things: Fragrance and her diamonds. Deciding that all women should have something that makes them feel fabulous, the idea for White Diamonds was born. Taylor based the perfume's profile on her expansive jewelry collection and Bel-Air gardens-to the extent that sixty-seven fresh flowers are used to make each bottle.
    Woods of Windsor:
    rstyle.me/+sNqoy_BI0MNrG9zfje...
Woods of Windsor launched their first collection of men's fragrances in 1981, inspired by a formulation that was initially used to scent Spanish leather. In 1983, the brand won the Queen's Award for Export. By 1985 these fragrances were exporting to 40 countries worldwide.
    Yardley:
    rstyle.me/+ljRzh2s1nfQj36907F...
Yardley of London is a British personal care brand and is one of the oldest firms in the world to specialize in cosmetics, fragrances, and related toiletry products. Established in 1770, Yardley was a major producer of soap and perfumery by the beginning of the 20th century. By 1910, it moved to London's Bond Street, and in 1921 Yardley received its first Royal Warrant. Today, Yardley holds two Royal Warrants.

I sold fragrances in a department store in the 70’s. We were encouraged to promote layering fragrance to extend the lasting power of the fragrance. We would first apply the fragranced lotion to skin, preferably directly after bathing while the skin was still damp, then the spray or splash fragrance followed by the body powder. It really did keep the fragrance from fading. Most fragrances today do not offer the full line of products, unfortunately.

I agree, it is nice to be able to layer fragrance and it is a shame that more companies dont offer dusting powder anymore. Dusting powder, especially a fragranced powder is such a pleasure to wear. Now you can by chafing cream and deodorants, but with the competing fragrances and the chemicals they are worth it.

I can still get matching powder and lotion for my Youth Dew, and keep the full line at all times. I have a half full box of Cinnabar powder that I bought before they quit making it. I'm very sparing with it. Sometimes I take the lid off just to smell it. The only other big name dusting powder I have right now is the one to go with my Red Door perfume. I absolutely hate that the matching powder and lotion are available for so few perfumes.

Yes! I worked as a makeup artist in the 70's and we were told to stress the importance of layering the fragrance products.
My mother (born in 1916) would layer her fragrances and taught me how to apply the products. My favorite layering fragrance was Opium. My mother loved Dior perfumes/powders. My grandmother (born in 1880) used Blue Grass exclusively.

@@marthawelch4289 I wore Blue Grass for years. I came across a Blue Grass bath soap in its own soap dish at a church fund raising and thought of buying it for nostalgia. If it was still there when I was leaving, I'd buy it............By the time i went to check it out, it was gone (lol). Chanel 22 was my favourite perfume along with all the products including the dusting powder.

My grandma always had a container of dusting powder on her dresser. It seemed such an elegant, feminine thing to do. Because of that, I keep a gorgeous 1940s box of powder on display in my bathroom. Even if I don't use it, it feels like I keep a tradition going!

My mother used Youth Dew EVERYTHING; eau de parfum, body lotion, bath oil, and body powder. I didn’t find it overpowering, since she was using it from before I was born up until the day she passed away - that classic scent was just always around. I found it comforting. To this day, it reminds me of her. ❤️

I enjoy using Woods of Windsor, Yardley of London, Youth Dew, Shalimar, Beautiful and Red Door dusting powder. I collect powder boxes and transfer the powder from the metal tins to a powder box with a powder puff to apply the product. One powder that I miss most of all is Lair du temps. The packaging and vintage fragrance is divine! Unused Lair du temps dusting powder sells for a fortune online. I wish Nina Ricci would bring it back. Thanks Laura for another great video!

This may sound odd, but I'm a Gentleman that enjoys the more elegant and even dare I say, finer small indulgences of life. Body/Dusting Powder is one of them. My Mother was a Cosmetologist and one of the things she taught me was looking good and smelling good were two sides of the same coin. So when I get ready for my day, my bath soap, shave soap, body powder and EDT should all match. When I go to the Barber he/she knows to finish the cut with a neck shave, and powder for the finish. I like Lavender, Sandalwood, Rose and Amaretto scents. However with my Yardley's Gentlemen's Classic Powder I use either the Yardley's matching EDT or Paul Sabastian Fine Cologne. I know this line of thinking works well, because I'm 63 yrs old and I still get complements from young Ladies in their 20s, 30s and 40s. One should always Look, Smell and be a Gentleman. Have a wonderful day.

What a beautiful collection you required! Lucky you. When I was a kid in the fifties, my grandmother used a powder that was very popular. It came in a metal container with a metal top, that was “flat”-not a good description. But it was only floral scents, such as lilac, lavender, lily of the valley, etc. But my favorite was heliotrope. Unfortunately, many of the companies pulled perfumed talcum powder from their lines because of the scare a few years ago. I only found a few yardley powder products at Tuesday Morning. Would love to find vintage ones. Thanks for a lovely video.

One of my earliest memories is sneaking into my mom’s room and using a powderpuff of Chanel 19 all over when I got out of the bath. I wish she still had the empty container since they stopped making it. I still remember how pretty it was, a white square lid with rounded corners and the Chanel logo that fit onto a black base that showed at the very bottom. I’m sure it wasn’t a big container but to me as a kid it was huge.

I remember using Jontue dusting powder with the Jontue perfume. I still have some Jontue perfume. I think dusting powder has been phased out. I actually got some Avon dusting powder for Christmas this past year. It is in a shaker bottle instead of a box.

This was an absolutely outstanding video ❤ I really enjoyed it. I just want you to know that I find your channel incredibly inspiring, I love it so so much. Also, I have a video suggestion which you might enjoy, I was wondering about you doing a reaction to some vintage commercials (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s,90s) , I'd love to see that. Laura, when I click on your lovely videos, the first thing I see is your incredibly beautiful smile. I hope you're doing well ❤ you are a big inspiration to me

My great grandmother used to wear the Tabu cologne all the time. Recently I bought a bottle and wore it around my mother, she got all sad and said "you smell like grandma". I bought her her own bottle to always have her grandmothers favorite purfume with her, and it very quickly became one of my favorites.

Dear Laura, thank you for another great video. I truly enjoy following your channel.
I love dusting powders and I have been using some in the past. Mostly Youth Dew as you know I love that perfume. Also from Estée Lauder, White Linen was my favorite. When they reissued Houbigant in the 80’s, I bought some of their dusting powders as their packaging was spectacular. Like you, I love vintage powder boxes. I like the scintillating ones for my cleavage.

it’s really sad 😞 that the stuff was cancerous all along that’s why everything is talcum free now thankfully 😅

    • @danielleg.3818
      @danielleg.3818 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

While talc is not good for especially inhaled, a single ingredient or two is not that bad if precautions are taken such as not inhaling the talc unlike most products today where the entire product is dangerous to use. Most synthetic chemicals nowadays are toxic even in small quantities. That is why people nowadays have to watch their "chemical loads" which is a term used to monitor how much your body us absorbing from all sources.

Most popular cosmetic face powders still contain talc, which talcum powder is made from. Two that do are Cody Airspun and Cover Girl Loose Powder, as well as Clinique. A number of brands, such as Avon, offer some talc-free formulas.. The cancer issue is linked to if the talc came in contact with asbestos.

    • @thevintagekitty
      @thevintagekitty 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@NancyL0220 Yes you are correct, TONS of makeup (eyeshadows, bronzers etc.) still contain Talc because there is no clear, proven link to cancer from talc therefore it hasn't been banned. We have to think, literally BILLIONS of people and babies were just dowsed in it for over 200 hundred years. If there was a clear link, we would have seen it, like we have with asbestos.

I used Loves Baby Soft as a teenager.I grew up with all the older women in my life using powder then lightly spraying perfume on.My Mum used Cachet,Tabu,Wind Song.My favorite was Chantilly that my god mother used.It smelled way better than the perfume in my opinion. And the puff was so soft and velvety. She would let me use a little on my arms.I felt like beautiful princess.
Also growing up my Dad used Old Spice. He had what was called after shave talc.He used it quite a bit
