One reason perfumes were reformulated is that sandalwood trees are endangered. They haven't figured out how to make a good synthetic sandalwood yet.

That's not true. It's because many ingredients can cause skin irritation. Some high end brands still use real sandalwood. There is very good synthetic sandalwood too.

So difficult to tell you as there is just nothing to compare it with. It is haunting. Just the other day a young man asked me what perfume I wore as he always knew when it was I who walked past his door & he loved it. I always buy the bath oil as it only needs 1 drop on your finger then on the base of your neck and lasts forever. I have empty bottles in all of my bedroom drawers & linen cupboard. You won’t be disappointed.

What's old is new. I find that what some things young girls (preteen to teen and even thru college age) are all about now are things I associated with old ladies. I can remember in college no one wanted anything to do with anything rose scented, even room fragrance because only old ladies used it. This is what the young girls like now. Another example was the Vera Bradley bags. When I was growing up, that brand was only used by old, elderly ladies too. So I was shocked when my preteen girls told me all their friends had it and it was the latest craze. They went through that for several years and it came to where you saw that brand expand everywhere. If someone had told me that would happen back in the 70s, I wouldn't have believed it.

Oh wow, this video just popped up in my suggested videos, so I HAD to watch it!Okay so when I was a kid we called "Youth Dew", *yuck ewww"....lol ... and yes Charlie ads were everywhere in the 70s, it was kind of the 'independent' woman wore Charlie. All of the ads were geared toward the 'expression of your own personal strength being recognized by the rest of the world if you wore this perfume'. It was inferred in the advertisements, that if you wore this perfume, somehow at a visceral level people would recognize that you had skills or strength. I remember begging my parents to give me a bottle of Charlie for Christmas and they got me the little sample size: I was over the moon!

I’m so envious of your perfume collection! I’ve been a perfume addict since I was a teen in the 70s. I work in a facility with special needs people and the employees are allowed to wear any kind of scent, so there aren’t too many opportunities for me to wear perfume; any bottle I have nowadays lasts me forever. When I was in HS I discovered White Shoulders, still a favorite of mine. My mom was friends with the Avon lady and bought a lot of perfumes, Avon had some pretty good stuff. An older woman GAVE me a bottle of Joy perfume, couldn’t believe it. The Old Vermont Country Store seems Evening In Paris and Blue Waltz, along with other interesting perfumes. Other scents I loved over the years are Maysumi, Jontue, Chloe (it’s out there again but not the same), Wind Song, Love’s Baby Soft (found some in Walgreens a while ago), Charley, Fame (not to be confused with Lady Gaga’s perfume), Ciara, Jovan Musk, Chanel. I never cared for the heavier scents such as Tabu, Shalimar or Emeraude. I’m a big fan of Liz Taylor perfumes. I just wish I could wear my perfume to work, I’d do it every day.

I've been trying to find a fragrance from yardley and I don't know the name and that might be it. It was a 'freak incident', I put it on and let's just say I had a magical day..went back to buy it and it was gone and didn't remember the name....(dont ever leave something without at least getting the name) the perfume was in a bin in an outlet type store...that's why I could never find it when I went back. Then about a week later I ran into some random lady who had on the same scent!! I thought, this is great! I'm gonna ask her what she's wearing..she could not tell me much because for her it was just a random find she picked up and it only had the yardley name or not much to go on for a label. She probably bought the one I was looking at. She loved the scent too!! I was so bummed. I can only hope I someday find that scent again. It's odd something as little as a fragrance, can have that much hold over you... Its probably discontinued now. Or they changed the formulary. I will never forget that story...

Channel No. 5 is my favorite perfume. When I was a kid it smelled like what we called old lady perfume, heavy & strong. They upgraded the scent & it's now very soft & light. I literally have been stopped by strangers (both men & women) who have commented on how good I smell & ask if they could lean in closer to "smell" me.🤣 There used to be a perfume in the late 70's made by Coty called Sophia (after Sophia Loren) that the newer Channel No.5 smells like. I've worn perfume since before I was a teenager so I've tried all the perfumes you mentioned, including all the Avon ones. In the late 60's, very early 70's Love's Baby Soft was popular with young girls, Yardley made several popular scents. Jean Nate was also worn by some of my friends. I wore Nina Ricci L'Air Du Temps often during that time. Charlie was definately popular in the 70's, then musk became popular & perfumes like Oleg Cassini's Musk was worn alot. Still have that bottle, & it actually has not become rancid despite the age! (I don't wear it, just still have it....) This was a very interesting video on vintage perfumes, please do more!

I collect and wear vintage perfumes. This was so fun! There are many you can get today but most, sadly, have been reformulated to death. That Miss Dior you have smells nothing like the original, which was my Moms fragrance when I was growing up. Many vintage perfumes are chypre scents that are not popular with the masses today and no longer made , but those are my favorites. Modern chypres are not made with the same ingredients due to regulations. Charlie was one of my first fragrances in High School, and boy would I like to smell the original again. It was just "Charlie!", not blue, and is a green floral chypre. Thank you for sharing your collection! Julia
