  • I wanted to talk about some of my initial impressions of my new 2024 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 so far… what I like and don't like about the car and the ownership experience so far. But then, the car broke down on me on the freeway. It's only a month old, with just 333 miles on the odometer.

    That dealer experience is not acceptable. Contact Porsche North America. As for the car, I had a 991.1 S with similar symptoms when the car was about 7 years old. Fuel pump went bad. To Porsche's credit, they covered it even though the car was out of the 6-year extended warranty. My current 718 Spyder is about 3.5 years old. 6k miles on it. Zero issues.

    Your first call should have been to your Porsche Sales Person & Service Manager. My 718 GTS 4.0 arrived with a small scratch on the paint surface. I completed the purchase, and they offered to provide me with a loaner to take for a week (2022 911 Carrera S). I didn't need a loaner, but I was definitely tempted to accept it.

    A couple of things to note:
    If you let the car sit for some time, you will get the dreaded 'Charging System' warning light at some point. I suggest purchasing a battery trickle charger.
    Take a look at Matt's TH-cam video on 'Obsessed Garage.' He has a good video on installing the Y-Connector for the battery charger/conditioner, or you can use the connector for the cigarette charging port.
    Hopefully, the PPF shop reviewed the disclaimer with you for PPF'ing the Porsche headlamps and the potential delamination issues. Also, most shops give a 10%-30% discount for PCA members. In this case, it makes the entire car less expensive to PPF versus the cost for the 1/3.
    Finally, you might consider purchasing a set of grill screens/protectors for the front radiator opening. I've personally witnessed the result of a 718 GT4 radiator catching a pebble at highway speeds and causing a radiator leak ($1,450).

      Is there a way to search a list of those shops you claim give discounts for PCA members?

      thanks for the tips! I did consider a lot of those things, and discussed the potential headlight issues with both mysalesman and the PPF installer. It kind of came down to, do you want the headlights protected from rocks and debris, or risk that for an issue that might or might not come up (the delamination)? For what its worth, I had same installer (Premier) do the headlights of my Lexus some 18 years ago, and have not regretted it. The headlights still look amazing and clear and I have had no reason to remove the film. Same for my 2016 Subaru BRZ, they did the headlight PPF and they look great 8 years later. So my money is on the PPF.
      I'm still considering the grill protectors, have to do some research on it to see what the options are.

    I have a 2023 gts 4.0 and an engine mount went bad after 1000miles. It was changed at a dealer at no cost very quickly, approximately 2 hours. I still think its a great car! These things happen. In your case, it is most likely not a big deal. Maybe a faulty coil plug if the car went to limp mode, although you will usually have a red code, your car in the video showed a yellow code, so it should not have gone into limp mode. You can also sometimes have condensation in the vaccum hoses causing this yellow code. I have had this happen in my other cars, and then the code goes away.
    Either way, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Drive and enjoy your car! But then again, Porsches are not for everyone.

    Sorry to hear your day got ruined. I agree that Porsche should have done better to mitigate the problem. The only disappointment I had from ordering my first Porsche early 2022 was they took away the option for the LA delivery experience for $500. It was only offering it to 911’s and Taycan’s purchases at the time. After delivery I took my Cayman down to LA for my own experience. As I was approaching the grapevine I noticed that I had just gone pass the 1000 mile mark and as the Porsche gods had intend two cars suddenly appeared in my rear view a 2nd gen R8 and a Dodge Challenger hellcat for a gentleman’s race. Long story short I smashed on both of them and was surprised how quick the 4.0 is. Maybe it was the massive hills or the curvy stretch on roads up and down the grapevine that gave me an advantage but it was amazing. The whole week in LA I was driving it like I stole it. I did some nice Canyon runs at Angeles Crest and Mulholland Drive. I did notice after coming home that I had burned a whole quart of oil maybe it was the multiple triple digits days or the constant redlining. 😮

They do seamless wraps that others cannot do because of their skill and experience. People with million dollar cars bring their cars to them. Low battery voltage causes weird things to happen, it will be very interesting to find out your problem.
    I wish I could have advised you before the PPF, at least for the 981 there was a Tech Bulletin on not putting it on the headlights because it interferes with coatings applied in manufacture if/when it must be removed. Mine was purchased Certified in 2017 and they had removed previous PPF (because they don't want to warranty PPF) but they left it on the headlights so we'll see what happens. The paint that seems to take the most punishment is around the side air intakes (esp. aft edge) and areas aft of the wheel wells.
    NOCO makes a Genius5 battery charger, reconditioner, maintainer with available cigarette lighter plug that will simplify that task. It's high quality and cheaper than the Porsche unit, and probably more versatile. I've got a '22 CGTS 4.0 with over 10K miles now. Mine makes the exact same noises as yours when you unlock it and open a door - that's totally normal according to all my research. It seems to be more noticeable when the car sits in the garage for a week without being driven.
    I'm sure that Porsche will get your car back on the road as quickly as they can. One time my car went into limp mode after a short stop (so the engine was still warm). Freaked me out, but the car was fine after I stopped and restarted it. Oh, and one other time the A/C didn't work...same fix (restart the car). Other than that, no issues! I love the car, and the sound between 4K and 8K is glorious, especially if you get aftermarket OAPs (I got Akra ones). My car has done 8 track days and at least that many autocrosses. I'm on my second set of tires (Michelin Cup2's this time) and brakes (Porsche OE).
    As for the trickle charger, just plug it into the cigarette lighter socket in the passenger footwell and close the door on the cord. That panel hiding the battery just unsnaps and lifts out...just give a tug on those two small handle/slots at either side of the cover. When you put it back, you have to pinch the rubber seal around the top side of the frunk with your fingers to get the cover to sit under the rubber seal. I usually leave that cover off when I'm going to the track, since I want to be able to do a quick visual check on the brake fluid reservoir.

    I suggest you contact Porsche customer service (not the dealer but corporate), and give them a them your feedback. Be fair but firm in your feedback. They may offer some form of compensation for your inconvenience. Hopefully this is a one off and your GTS has nothing but trouble free miles after this. I had a 2019 Audi RS3 that was on the verge of becoming a lemon due to repeated failures of the virtual cockpit .Long story short, my consistent communication with Audi corporate, plus good documentation had Audi pay me $4300 asides from repairing the issue under warranty. I did sell back that car to the Audi dealer after that to get rid of it.

    • @warfire24
      @warfire24 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I second this suggestion about contacting Porsche corporate. I understand even new cars sometimes fail but the lack of offering a loaner or rental for the inconvenience is absolutely ludicrous. The dealership you brought this to should be embarrassed for not offering a loaner on a car with 300 miles that needed to be towed in. Keeping my fingers crossed I never have to go through this with my new Porsche.

    Very aggravating. Sorry to gear. I have a 22 718 S manual and zero issues 5k miles and track. Much of the experience is the dealer support so hope they step up. We get loaners at our dealership even for reg maintenance.

      yeah I don't understand how they can not have loaners or step up to give a rental in such circumstances. maybe only the squeaky wheels get the grease. Still hopeful that it is a quick and easy fix but we'll see.

      I don't know man you might have just gotten bad luck on bad luck, obviously any brand but especially Porsche should be prepared for stuff like this but you can't be too mad, it definitely seems like you got the short stick in this situation as other people talk about how Porsche gave them loaners during services.@@86drive86

      You schedule your maintenance weeks in advance, so the dealership can allocate you a loaner. They do not have loaners lurking around. My 22 GTS 4.0 has been totally trouble-free in the past 19k miles.

    I have a 2015 981 GTS and had no technical issues so far. If I had your experience, I would feel 100% the same as you do. Nobody should ever experience a technical issue, resulting into getting towed with just 300 miles on the clock. This is totally unacceptable for a premium car.

      @86drive86  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, glad I am not out of line here. What makes it especially frustrating is, this was the first roadtrip I was taking in the new car with my wife up to Napa, we were supposed to be having a wonderful trip up to wine country and a nice lunch, and instead we are stranded on the side of the freeway and waiting for a tow truck. I'm just incredibly disappointed with how things have gone so far.

      @@86drive86 I have total sympathy for your situation. I drive my 981 mainly on the weekends for fun times - thus I have only 16,000 miles on the clock for a 2015 car. I do oil changes every 2500 miles, and maintain the car in like new conditions. I have a skilled mechanic who comes to my house and does all the service work. I do believe (based on the reliability ratings), that the Cayman is a rather reliable car. So, let's hope, you have a very minor issue that gets fixed, followed by peace of mind and a good ownership experience. My experience with Porsche dealers has been rather disappointing. I always sense some sort of arrogance or entitlement on their behalf (feels like "we are Porsche and you can be lucky that we still service you". Since most of their clients are well off, they charge high prices, knowing that there is no resistance - just an easy signature since their customers do not want to pick a "petty fight". There is very little "salesman ship" and "the customer is king" attitude. I find this totally unacceptable as well. The brand arrogance is outrageous.

      Aren't most videos on TH-cam essentially anecdotal rants? LOL in all seriousness I will try to be cautiously optimistic that this will get resolved and I can forget about the negatives when I have the car back. I will try to focus on facts and not feelings most of the time, but let's be real, most of TH-cam is about entertainment and sharing an experience, not news or journalism. I think those who are watching this video, are curious and want to know what the ownership experience is like, and I'm going through it as a first time Porsche owner, and I guess some people are interested in hearing about it. You are riding hard on your disappointment, how is the law in the US ?
    You don’t have a mobility warranty?
    Here in Germany they have to keep you mobile (if you are covered under the warranty) but there is still a few days given to them to sort it out to organise a solution, it’s absolute unrealistic that all dealers need to have cars waiting around at any time for all possibilities.
    But I can tell you that all these sounds are not normal, none of our 981 and 982 had any issues and none of these had made any of that „clack“ noises
    Maybe you are one of the unlucky 1-2% of new car owners

    • @86drive86
      @86drive86  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the Lemon Law is a little different in each state, but here in CA I think it requires that you have brought the car in for the same problem multiple times, or have your car sitting in the shop for over 30 days before you can return it under the Lemon Law. My car was at the dealership for a week, so it doesn't quite meet the eligibility yet and hopefully it never will.
