Don't get many of these places anymore, they used to be everywhere down south, I remember having breakfast in them when i was on the roofs, massive plate of food, all for about 2 pound 50.
Used to be plenty here up north too. They had a certain atmosphere to them. A very smoky one before the smoking ban came in. Don't know which smell was more overpowering, the smoke or the old cooking fat.
I remember one great moment in the early 1990s of being in one of these cafe's on the upper Holloway road, and how that very kind waitress really took care of me.
what I love the most about this video (besides the food) is despite this being a greasy spoon, all of them are using their forks the "proper" way when scooping food into their mouth.
Absolutely right! So much changed! When I’m watching videos from 90s Sometimes I feels like it was just a dream. And it was at the different world. Nowadays You will never get those vibes as it was at 90s. And for example it’s hard to meet at the streets of London so many rock n roll celebrities as it was back in the days. Now it’s a new internet generation. It’s so sad when you realise that again and again
Impressive that David Trimble could find the time to work behind the counter at a greasy spoon cafe in London while also negotiating the Good Friday Agreement
When I visited London I looked for one of these and the only one's I found were exactly the type you described. I was told you have to go outside London nowadays to find actual greasy spoons.
Literally every meal here looks homecooked, fresh, piping hot and just pure delicious. Nowadays everything is bought pre-cooked from Wholesalers ready to be reheated. Shame we let places like this go to big corporations and chains. Bring back the English cafe!!!!!
Greasy spoons would always gather up the community. Old folks, school kids, work men, business men, stoners and tourists looking for a cheap wholesome meal. You have these fancy Cafes that will charge 6 quid for a bacon roll, whereas if I just walk 10 min up the road I can get one, that tastes fresher, for 2-3 quid at my local greasy spoon
Steak & Kidney Pie = £2.36 or Gammon Steak, Egg, Chips & Beans = £4.08. I'll have we some of that. It would be about £5 for the pie and £10 for the Gammon nowadays
I used go in then Brian and his wife run it was called the flock inn. Brians old man had a cafe opposite tate &Lyle in the.70s called George s cafe I'll have.tea no suger son
As you know it was the best cafe in East London when Brian & family took it over from the former couple when it was the Flock Inn. His old place opposite Tate's was a cracking place for a cuppa and toast & dripping, and part of his success was he knew every customer & what they wanted.
@davidwhite7294 If in doubt blame Brexit hay. Nothing to do with covid and debt I suppose as well as local councils charging crippling rents which has nothing to do with Brexit
I had no idea there was such snobbery about this ….l went into a cafe on Hilly Fields, Brockley, London , it’s called Pistachios….l asked for an egg sandwich and was told“we don’t do fried egg“ l asked why not and was told they,re unhealthy. I said“ well that’s what l want“ and was told again „well we don’t do them, do you want anything else…..l said no I fuggin don’t ….I,ll go to a proper fuggin cafe.
What kind of English cafe doesn’t do a fried egg sandwich… liberals have allowed croissant loving chocolate pancake eating idiots take over trying to make everything sound Italian…. I fancy fried egg sandwich now untoasted extra brown sauce 🙏🏽👍🏽
interesting! saw Gordon Ramsay reference the "greasy spoon" in a video. he didn't seem to like this kind of place, unfortunately. but the way he said it reminded me of waffle house and I love waffle house
With one or two exceptions, these people don't smile and I am quite shocked at how dog-like some of these people are in the way they "go at" their food. No one really notices what they eat, it's just a mechanical process to shovel it away. Noticed also the primitive way of holding a knife and fork. I wonder if they interact with their loved ones in such a fashion. I put it down to an island mentality. No one behaves like this on mainland continental Europe
@@replay68pete14 France has gastronomy, their gift to the world. Dear old Blighty has its knickers in a twist and in the process of retreating into an island-mentality where any discussion or appreciation of good food is frowned upon. Must be a good way to start a day of hard work. Damn I wish we have more of these in Canada.
All you see is kebab shops!
@@36OZ supply and demand, also I have plenty of these sort of cafes around me and I I’ve in London

I used to work in a cafe just like this good old days
I loved them when they were like this with those tables with he plastic connected chairs lol the smell in there was lovely pure nostalgia
The three ladies cooking, I wonder just how much of their hair fell into the food over the years 😂
what I love the most about this video (besides the food) is despite this being a greasy spoon, all of them are using their forks the "proper" way when scooping food into their mouth.

Watching this made me hungry.
Must be 1997 or later as there’s an N Reg car outside....how London has changed!

Love the cafe and the video nice work
Great food good company always welcomed with a smile
thanks for sharing
Funny, all cafes used to be like this in general. They weren’t sophisticated like they are now with decor and table service.
When I visited London I looked for one of these and the only one's I found were exactly the type you described. I was told you have to go outside London nowadays to find actual greasy spoons.
I am hoping that greasy spoons like this are still around and still in business, despite the world is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This video looks timeless, may be because of the great food footage.

So about half the price of what things are now but I know minimum wage wouldn't have been half of what it is now, it would have been less!
I hope you got permission to film, first geezer didn't look too impressed!?
@The Wanderer great idea 👍 thanks champ!
Old Alan Muckie!
5:33 Hey look, an arcade video game machine on the far left. Do greasy spoons now still keeps those old arcade machines?
Wow that big piece needs a hair net
She didnt look happy about being filmed either!
Looks like the price is a bit high for the 90s?
0:26 imagine this was 2021, the guy would have knocked down the camera from his hands.. people didn't care back then

This can't be London, surely. They're all English people.
That’s racist. 20% of the British Population are immigrants. 8% Asians and 12% Afro Caribbean. Neither group go in for bacon so that’s why.
@@davidwhite7294England didnt look as bad as it does today
God give me back my appetites again after that!! Here the evidence at UK no food culture at all!!
