  • Archival footage shot by an amateur filmmaker while visiting England, probably in 1972
    It contains stock footage of London: people with typical 1970s clothes walking on Portobello Road market, preachers talking at Hyde Park corner, a sightseeing tour on the Thames River, traffic and pedestrians in Westminster, the British Museum, early 1970s fashion and lifestyle shops in Carnaby Street (Soho), an International Marxist Group manifestation, and more.

    05:00 *The Tower Hotel* (left) is still being built (opened on September 19, 1973) and 05:18 the paddle steamer *"Princess Elizabeth"* was established as a floating restaurant in 1970 (now she's a restaurant so far, though not on the Thames, but in Dunkirk harbour).
    Based on the pace of construction of the Tower Hotel, I guess the shooting date of this footage is summer 1972.

      I was fifteen in the 1980's, and this world had vanished. It's never ceased to fascinate me how the world I was born into, I never really knew. The Thatcher decade drew a line under Post-war Britain of the 50's, 60's, 70's.

    Just as grey and dull then as it is now, except now it is overcrowded to an extreme level. One thing to note, the lack of overweight people then when compared to now.

    • @PSYCHIC_PSYCHO
      @PSYCHIC_PSYCHO 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The lack of overweight people is due to the fact that back in the early 70's there were hardly any fast-food joints, except British ones that sold EXCRUCIATINGLY bland food like Fish & Chips which are about as addictive as turds. Whereas in this modern age we have access to mouth-watering highly addictive cuisines from around the World.

      @@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO Sorry I have to disagree about Fish & Chips. This meal is c**p now compared to the 1970s. Recently I bought Fish & Chips in my town and I asked for a large Cod & chips and I got a mountain of sawdust tasting chips and a large goldfish which was 60% batter. It is the same everywhere.

      The highly unethical economic system which the Tories introduced in the early 80's gave rise to exploitation of the lowest paid workers, rising inequality, debt, and poverty; which led to exponential rise in crimes of financial gain, thus making the streets very unsafe.

      London in the mid seventies with the likes of Patrick Mackay running around seri@1 ki11¡ng old age pensioners! And no CCTV or decent forensics for the police to catch them. I actually feel safer these days, but then again there’s always been crime - it’s just different dangers I guess.
