Wayne, thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience. You are good enough to have somebody else hold the camera for you, or set up a tripod as you work and explain. The nearly constant moving camera and focusing makes it difficult to watch and takes a lot away from your valuable work. - Respectfully

best video yet!! Very clear and easy to follow. this will be my 3rd oil seal replacement and this time adjacent bearing bits came out too. too much rubbish in Hong Kong waters! I wonder why more stern drive makers don't have a gear box oil reservoir in the boat with an alarm when oil level is low.

After watching this video videos I want to do this process as a weekend project. However my boat is already Winterized.
If I pull my lower unit, will I loose any of the antifreeze that's in the engine for winter storage?
    Thanks

Hello, can you tell me or explain how to tighten the nut no. 21120 and how to set the clearance on the tapered roller bearing?

The seal lips do NOT go to the inside. They go to the outside. Secondly, there are 2 seals because it takes 2 seals stacked one on top of the other.

I was thinking the same thing. Plus I've never heard of oil seals cutting fishing line.

U might want to change the position of your seals. The side showing the springs go on the outside. The metal backing should be put in where they're back to back. if not, it's gonna leak.

Hello, good videos. Do you have a video of the actual prop shaft removal? I have an alpha 1 gen 1 that was getting oil in the water pump. The shaft has a lot of side play at the pump and end play (up and down). I need to pull the bearings and gears to see whats going on, most likely needs bearings and seals. I had metal on the oil plug magnet as well. Thanks

Honnestly I don't even bother applying heat @ the main casing .. I simply drill the damn main carrier nut out and put a new one lol

I am in the middle of replacing my seals and O ring but when i pulled the bearing carrier out the reverse gear came out with it? Is this a bad thing or normal? I seen that yours didn't come out.

i noticed that your lower unit doesn't have the screw holes for the prop anode(91-95). The reason i ask is, do you know if i could replace the old carrier with no holes for prop anode, to newer carrier(96-current) with anode holes on older alpha one gen 2?

Probably very similar but there are different mercury designs. You should get a genuine factory service manual if you are going to try.

The mechanics where I live cherry pick their work. You would never see them doing this... "You need a new lower unit"... Duh, OK....here's my credit card. Long island new York. Tons of boaters and a handful of mechanics.

Are you guys here to learn to fix your boat or to criticize a boat mechanic for his video skills? Geez.. I'm here trying to figure out what parts we need to replace.... we bought a boat and didn't see the crack in the lower unit nor any grease or oil residue in the water....so I assume we rounded off some gears. Do we need to replace the whole upper and lower unit?
