Could you’re video be used to repair a 1973 500 50Hp Mercury outboard, specifically putting the shifter into the neutral position, prior to inserting the bearing carrier? Thanks for all you do.
Good Day, Just to clarify, in the video you set the shifter into neutral before installing the bearing carrier is that correct? Great job on the explanation of the different topics. Thanks
Recently rebuilt my 94 Merc 40hp lower unit replacing seals and water pump. Is there a reason my reverse would not engage, but forward and neutral work fine? I replaced the gear selector cam as well. Just reverse will no lock when turning prop, rotates both ways like neutral with lower unit on bench as you did.
Nice video Mercson, as every single one I saw from you channel, I have a question, when u insert the shaft in what position need to be the cam shift cam? I am working in one and I cant get the right position to get Forward Neutral and Reverse, but this that I have the shift shaft rod is one large one piece coming from linkage mechanism in the motor. any email I can send u pictures or video? maybe you can help me thanks
@@MerCSonL6 I wasn’t sure the position of shift cam goes into the shift rod but I got it thanks to your video, first attempt I was getting only forward and neutral not reverse but finally I fix it.
Thanks for the video. I was studying the book but I’m unclear on a question. I have around 1/8” in/out endplay on the prop shaft. I am unsure exactly what controls that in & out movement? Is it a the housing nut, the propeller nut or the combination of both? Thank you!
MerCSon Thanks for the video, I have learned so much about my Tower of Power 1150, I recently pulled out the prop shaft and carrier bearing, replaced seals, upon reinstall of the prop shaft and carrier bearing, I only managed to get the prop to turn right (in foward gear) with the clicks as you showed, Neutral is good, I can turn left and right, Reverse gear, the prop does not turn, it has some play so when I turn prop left to right it stops on both sides, (similar to what you show at the end of the video). The difference is I achieved this by having the throttle in forward position, not neutral. Is this a problem? Also I thought if in reverse gear, I should be able to turn the prop in reverse should I not? appreciate your guidance.
fyi, my unit is 1978 or 1980 model, Canadian Version serial code in the 7xxxxxxx's, everything matches with what you are showing, (just looking to confirm that the prop engages as you show at the end of the video) Reverse gear you move prop back and forth it stops both ways. I don't want to destroy my lower end when I run her! thanks brother!
@@MerCSonL6 many thanks for the reply. I will fill up the gear oil and test her in my driveway this weekend, will keep you posted. Great video! I have a question. I took the prop shaft out of mine and the pin that moves the clutch dog back and forth fell out. What all goes in there before I put the pin back in. I found 1 small ball and researched it and found that there are supposed to be 3 so I ordered the kit for it. I’m just not sure if a spring goes in there with the little balls
MerCSon, great videos! I have a 1500xs lower unit I have off the motor to fix leaks and I’m replacing the shift shaft bushing and seal. Unfortunately the shaft lifted up when I took the bush out and I’m having trouble getting it back into the cam. I can’t actually see the cam when I look down and shaking the unit around doesn’t seem to move anything. I can see the cam follower when I ratchet the prop shaft. Any wise words you may have to help?
The cam is splined. The shift shaft just need to be aligned with the spligned cam. Only way see 👀 this is to pull the bearing carrier. The cam has to have slipped into cavity. I would try harder to get that aligned b4 pulling the crown nut. I apologize. Im sure thats not what you want to hear. Son
MerCSon L6 thanks champ, you were spot on I needed to try harder, I care back to it in the morning and we wrestled and I put it upside down and shook the unit and it started moving so I could see if. Had it sorted in 10 minutes after 3 hours of head scratching the night before!
As I said before (OUSTA) always getting the job done with whatever tools you have.l loved the tooth brush cleaning. What spray oil was that for lubrication? Great vid.as usual.👍🏼
Marvel, if I had to put a number on, about 5-8 ounces every other tank. Star tron I use in every tank typically about 2 ounces...... or more. You can not over do it with start tron. And it keeps fuel from breaking down. Hope this helps. Son
I have a question unrelated to this video. I recently rebuilt the carbs on my outboard(1985 Mercury 115 in-line 6) it started the first time I cranked it but now, it’ll maybe start for 2 seconds then sputter to a stop and won’t turn on again
Fuel restriction. Verify all carbs have fuel. A good way is to hit the venturi with compressed air and fuel should splash out. Prime the bulb of course b4 doing so. Let me know. Son
MerCSon L6 and one last question(sorry, don’t mean to annoy you) can I spray some brake cleaner to clean the sludge from the inside of my lower unit. I took it off and it looks disgusting in there
Good content. I couldn't finish the video because I was annoyed with all of the stupid black and white switching and fading in and out of focus. I would change that.

After tightening down the crown nut is there any play in the shaft?
I a little. If I had to measure its less than 1/8th of an inch because of the spring pushing against the clutch

Do I have to use every time I take the boat out or it goes by how many gallons I fill my tank every time?

Marvel Mystery. I would have labeled the bottle but then it wouldn't be a mystery. Haha
It says add to gas and oil that mean it’s an additive to the gas tank on your boat plus the 2 stroke oil that you add to gas tank. Am I right?!!

Is it a steady stream? Sounds like a circulation problem. The engine is not getting enough water.
