I subscribed to you 5 years ago when i bought a 1000$ 16' checkmate with a 1985 90hp Tower of Power. Did the fuel pump and impeller just incase and do annual plugs and gear lube changes. It hasn't ever given me trouble until last month when the stator started failing. I wanted to thank you for the awesome library of Mercury Knowledge that you have uploaded for all of us! Your troubleshooting videos helped me check my trigger and stator, the stator was way out of spec! Replaced it with a "CDI Electronics" stator and it runs great again! Thanks again! Cheers from 🇨🇦
Enjoyed the video, I've heard about rebuilding Mercs and the challenge of the blind cylinders. Back in the early '80s I had a 850XS on a 14-ft Baja and sold it after a couple years not knowing how rare it was - oh well!
The easy way is to remove the rods from the crank put the pistons in with your fingers pushing the rings in. Bottom out the pistons set the crank tapping with a rubber hammer after lining the dowels on the bearings and reed cages and bring the rods up one by one just keep track of your bearing count .
had a question on this. what is the crank specs for the clearance between reed block to crank? have 2 cranks bad grooves in it from reed blocks. found someone to weld amd machine aswell balance but dont have the measurments

Way to go MerCSon.....You da man
Where did you get the piston ring compressors? I cant find them
Ebay. Son
That looks like a royal pain in the a$$
Merc had a tool that went in the end of the crank (driveshaft splines) to keep it from rotating. With 1 extra person, it goes quick and easy
Just did that....can you rebuild for me
Yes. Son

The Merky quit.
Wrong kind of Mercury Outboard Blues…
“I really need a Mercury…”
Was the j-block from me salvageable ?
Yes. Son. However it was the original J Block from Mexico. Son
The one from arkansas
@@maryfithen5006 it has yet to be decided my friend
@6;20, the crank is to far in the bottom end. It must go in very evenly or it will fight you. Get another person to halp. It goes, much easier
