    Great information. The first tank is really the only one where this is a big deal. If you have an established tank just move over some of the filter media from one tank to the other or run the filter for the new tank on an old and switch it out when you're ready. Establishing a healthy tank is when you really need to invest in the work but after that healthy tanks are a self contained ecosystem. The big thing to remember is a tank is "new" for several weeks and maybe months after it's started. Lot of people miss this point and big fluxes in water quality will and do happen with tanks that have new plants new fish or new filters.

    One of my personal favorite methods (other than using already filtered media) is to add bio bacteria and ammonia. You add a ton of bio bacteria and then add a bit of ammonia every two days and test the water the next day. You continue this until all the ammonia is converted to nitrates by the next day. Then you slowly add fish. My favorite bio bacteria is dr Tim’s

      I'm honestly not sure if its the best or not but its the only one I've ever used. Now I just take filter media from my canister filter wait about a day and slowly add fish. i also add Stability when seting up a new tank.

    I use a combination method.
    1. I dose Tetra Safe Start Plus, or whatever brand of liquid bacteria I have on-hand. I repeat the dose once weekly for a month.
    2. I add some live plants.
    3. I seed with rocks, decor, or a used filter cartridge.
    4. I add 1 to 2 fish per week until I achieve desired stock level.
    5. I use prime for new tanks. I use stress coat for maintenance.
    This method works well for me.

      Thank you. You answered the question I had before I even asked. I was wondering if garden soil or potting soil would provide the ammonia for the nitrogen cycle. Have you ever had any experience with German Blue Rams in this kind of setup? If so, would their digging a nest disturb the cap and cause a spike that would kill them or would it cause the dirt to float to the surface?

  • @Lonewolfblue66
    @Lonewolfblue66 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Plants can actually use any nitrogen source, including ammonia and nitrite. So if planted heavy enough, you could start to slowly add fish, and as the plants begin to grow, they will take in ammonia, nitrite, or nitrates. Even algae growing on items or glass will take in any nitrogen source.

    I put together my first planted aquarium less than 2 months ago. I added plants first, and thought Id let them acclimate for a week with no other life. Then I added a couple of Nerites.....another plant shipment came (all beginner, forgiving plants) and in those plants, I basically inherited an ecosystem worth of organisms, snails, worms (including planaria) etc.....they started hunting snails....as the deaths slowly started to rise, the plants started displaying marked growth on a daily basis. Started using planaria traps, and added fish at the beginning of the third week. Snail deaths ceased and the plants went crazy in growth. Not once did I have an ammonia or nitrite reading. A week ago I got my first nitrate reading and its held steady at 5 PPM.
    This is how I will approach my next project.....hopefully no planaria next time, thankfully I didnt get a complete infestation.

    So, is just aqua soil (Fluval Stratum) & plants enough to cycle a tank?
    I've left a heavily planted tank going for a month (wanted plants to establish). Crypts etc have melted off emersed growth.
    Used the API testing kit, which said parameters were great.
    But, is this because there was never any ammonia/nitrite/nitrate to get rid of in the 1st place?
    My LFS owner pretty much laughed in my face, said I had a dead tank & suggested some Tetras & Gourami to _start_ the cycle :/
    Was he wrong? Was only going to add fish gradually anyway. So, no big deal to me.
    Interested in people's thoughts on this.

      I went to an aquarium store yesterday and was kind of confused because he told me to wait to have my tank cycled and established to start adding in plants. I didn't understand this because i hadn't heard anyone else mention it on many videos i saw, however, reading this comment leads me to believe that maybe for some advanced plants they need to be in an established tank. I did tell him i wanted beginner easy to grow plants but he literally wouldn't let me buy anything pretty much and said to bring in my water after a week of cycling.

    I did everything wrong when I started my aquarium and it took me almost 2 months. I started out with my betta in his 10 gallon tank and he got sick. I moved him to a 1-1/2 gallon temporary tank and changed his water every day to every other day because 1-1/2 gallons is just not big enough, but it made it easier to treat him for the bacterial infection he got from the bigger tank that I was trying to cycle. API told me to use ammolock. Big mistake! They told me to put it in every other day, even bigger mistake.
    They also had me put in quick start, that didn't help either. When I started adding nitrifying bacteria, changes started happening and finally the nitrites started to climb. It only took about a week to 1-1/2 weeks after I put the nitrifying bacteria in.
    My tank finally cycled last Saturday, but I tested the water again Sunday to be safe and then I worked on moving my betta into his 10 gallon tank most of Sunday afternoon. He is very happy now. He is king of the tank and he is even tolerating the snails now.

      The only fish that will live in my tank is my betta. He's the star of the tank :) I have 2 nerite snails to help with clean up and I've left a few of the pond snails for now, but I'm probably going to get rid of them because I don't see that they are helping. They don't seem to get very big either. Do you think I need to worry about water hardness for my tank? Oh and I have lots of plants.

    • @lisag4878
      @lisag4878 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hardness of my tank water runs is somewhere between 150 and 300. I only have test strips for that. My other levels I check with the API master freshwater test kit.

    First time doing a fully planted tank, though, so I wanted to know about cycling with them.

      @@MadCheshireHat Not true at all. Not one bit- your substrate, plant, and of course your filter media will determine it. It can change as time progresses. Good bacteria doesn't live in the water- it lives on surfaces.... no need to use old water: in fact, not a good idea at all.

      @@fetchingfinches9120 yes. I know the beneficial bacteria lives on surfaces. Again, I didn't say it didn't. What I did say was that the water parameters would be the same. And by this I mean temperature, pH, nitrate, and plant nutrients in the water column already exists in the tank. There might even be food for the bacteria in it as well.
      I've done this many times and have never had any problems. If the fish lived in the water before, why wouldn't they be able to after? Especially combined with fresh water. Not much different from a water change.

    these methods are old now imo, for a small fish planted community tank just use prime and bacteria in a bottle (from a shop, not online you don't know the storage or age otherwise). prime will convert the ammonia into a none toxic ammonia thats ok for fish and the filter bacteria which 1 dose out of a bottle is easy 1 weeks of a population by the old leave food in method will still munch on it has if it was the toxic ammonia
    . 55g tank cycled within a week. tho for it to work you must have fish in the tank, the food method etc wont feed enough for the bacteria ya dumping in.

      @danielthetreehugger9134 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Stan Hristov I think you need to go back to high school biology class mate, plants in general need a unspeifed amount of uera nitrogen (ammonia or ammonium (ph dependant) along side other nitrogen sources, potassium sources and phosphorus sources. Those are the 'big three' fertilizers but even beyond that plants are 'hungry' for many elements and usually like certain isotopes or compounds of/containing those elements for example aquatic plants use fe3+ more readily than other isotopes of iron.
      As far as my horticultural knowledge of aquatic plants... in general they really don't discrimnate a lot about the nitrogen source.
      "sorry bro"
      Do ya "resurch"
