I already broke the tiny plastic pin that's supposed to keep the top part in place on my Tetra GC 30 the second time I shook it to get it started. I'm so glad I didn't skip this video assuming I already knew this stuff.
I started off shaking it and then thought I'd struck gold just by inserting and giving a quick suck on the pipe.... You learn something new every day 😁👍

@@daltonhutcherson2999 yes it's necessary to regular clean filter sponges or other media or they become clogged. Gravel vacuuming regularity depends on who you have eating at the bottom of the tank, but is still needed from time to time.
This is just amazingly helpful. I used to get frustrated how much water I'd have to replace in my tank. Obviously I do water changes, but don't want to replace 50-75% every time! I never thought to crimp the hose. This method has saved so much grief. I didn't want the debris to fall back down in so always waited for it to exit the siphon, dropped the gravel ad moved on. This is so much more efficient!
This is the first time I had ever seen someone use this technique instead of just letting the siphon run while you try to pick up as much junk as you can. I did it this morning and the waste water was so so so much grosser than it normally is, thank you!! This has revolutionized my tank cleaning!

Hi Cory, I want to THANK YOU for teaching me how to vacuum! I am brand new to the hobby because I had to rescue a bunch of fish from a crappy tenant that I evicted. Long story short, I re-homed the big guys and kept the dwarf Gourami. I've almost got my 10 gal tank cycled (yay!) but it was sooo cloudy and I thought it was the substrate being full of silt. Turns out I didn't know the simple and CORRECT way to vacuum! My water is so beautiful now and my little guy, "Gill" is so happy! THANK YOU, you are my aqua hero!! Cheers, Sondra

Just wanted to take a moment and tell you this is one of my favorite videos. I watched this when I first got back into the hobby. Every person that keeps an aquarium should watch this. This is the number one reason people fail in the hobby and get burned out. They do not know how to gravel vac and it can be so rewarding and fun. I'm LOVING my unexpected new hobby. Never dreamed I could become attached to pets I can't touch! 10 gal tank with 16 fish. Mostly tetras but I do have some different fish, all no longer than an inch long other than one male betta. He thinks he's boss!! 😂
Thank for sharing. Very informative. I will trust tips from a fish store owner above anyone else. When you have to keep a lot of tanks cycled and thousands of fish alive for customers , you just gotta know more than anyone else.
God, I love these video's. It's 2:56am here in NZ and for the past 3 weeks I always watch these videos when I try going to sleep. Not that they are boring, cause they are far from it but it's so relaxing listening to educational videos about things that I love such as fish when it's sleepy time. I was given a 3 gallon tank with some equipment, and had no idea how to use the siphon with it. I'm getting a 10 gallon tank and reading as much as I can before setting it up.

THANK YOU!!!!! What an easy way to start the siphon (so much better than pumping up and down forever) Even better... the crimping technique is amazing!! So obvious in retrospect but I'm a novice and I was making such a mess in my tank every time with debris going back out. The tank always looked worse after I "cleaned" it. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. None of the other vids I saw showed this. You're a hero.
WOAH! This could have saved me so much time and so much crying in frustration. I've had the ones with bulbs, and those are super hard to start. I've had the ones with the trigger that break super quickly. This video needs WAY more views than it has. This could save so many people from drinking tank water!
Fantastic technique. Love it... Watched many vids including the one from Aquarium Gardens, using the turkey baster..... Always had the problem of filling up my bucket before getting a fraction of the waste in.... hi-five bruv
I can confirm that the basters can get a bit messy, but they start up surprisingly well? Just squeeze the bulb and it does the rest. I've found that the biggest issue is that gravel can get stuck in the tube... I'm wondering if there's a way to rig it to be a less messy. Kinda wish I could cut the end to make the tip less of a gravel trap. The size is ideal for nano tanks, especially 5 gallons.

I really like how you were pinching the hose ,definitely a helpful hint.. I have watched several of your videos and are confident in your know how.. but !!! This is were I get confused.. your video shows you throughly vacuuming the substrate. Other videos I have watched say never do that .kind of rotate to different areas when u vacum.. claiming over vacuuming or vacuuming all the gravel is very bad because alot of bb is In there which will be lost.. I am definitely not questioning your method.. thoughts !!!
Newbie here and you prolly saved my fish. I always kept up with my changes n tried siphoning. The crimp technique actually gives me visible and tested results. Before using this I felt like I did twice the work without actually achieving anything.
This video just lowered my water bill. I always was turning on the faucet to get my pressure and syphon going. So basically, I had my water running down the drain while doing a water change. Thanks, Cory!

In Sept. I started watching your fishroom build. Got me started on a 4 tank wall with your design using sponge filters and a 4 outlet air pump. I just watched your planted tank videos, and I guess I'm just confused how to know when to vacuum. If fish waste helps fertilize the plants, what point is there in removing it if your tank is cycled and you have live plants?
Exactly, there is no specific point really. This is how nature works. The point of removing debris from the tank would be to get more water clarity really. Kind of like sweeping your floor. We could live on dirt floors, we prefer it to look cleaner is all. So it comes down to mostly a personal preference.
It is likely about finding balance too right. Because if there is more waste than plants are processing then it could be building a toxic environment for your ecosystem?
Nitrates build up. The only way not cleaning up your substrate could work is doing frequent large water changes to remove the waste from the water column as it breaks down. You also need a thicker than normal substrate. Sound practice is you don't do deep gravel vacs around your plants. Another option would be to use a liquid fertilizer. Most plants will uptake micro and macro nutrients from the water column. Another option is root tab fertilizer. Either way you can still clean the waste from your substrate.
Man I wish I had you as a fish store near me, you are so passionate and helpful about the hobby. So many helpful tips, it sounds like you want the best for everyone in it as well!
Excellent thanks for doing a short video on this, under 10 mins and I learned so much techniques. I am sure many people come here as beginners and get boggled by the more advanced stuff, simple steps for beginning the hobby are much appreciated.
So much I didn't know! I have a planted tank and I've been having difficulty keeping the ammonia levels at zero, they hover between 0/0.25 and 0.50. Little did I know I was cleaning the substrate WRONG! I look forward to more informational videos to help keep my fin babies healthy!

I have successfully kept 4 electric blue rams now! Alongside other ram species in separate tanks and today your video has taught me how to more carefully deal with the sponge filter and also the better method to cyphining with the crimping method so thank you very much for helping us fish enthusiasts!!!
Hey man. Great informative channel you have here bud. After watching this video, I began brainstorming, and an idea came to mind. Now, I don't know if this would work or not like I am "trying to see it in my head", so if in fact it is dumb, I apologize. My idea is as follows: It involves the suction tool you are using, and then this. So as to not have fish get sacked up, you barricade off a small section of the fish tank, so as to not have any fish go in it. This barricade does not necessarily have to be fitted/permanently attached. This barricade WILL need holes (multiple) to allow water into it, yet obviously small enough as to not have fish get into it. Now that I think of it, you could somehow have a sponge filter placed directly in front of the holes (and just like that, you have a sponge filter). Now, you create the suction (as majestically as you did it in this here video), and leave it in there. Now, instead of having that water leave the tank, you have it flow back into the tank, thus effectively creating an airflow. For the suction to maintain, it would have to be a "waterfall" , so the tube would have to be somehow fixed OUT of the water. Now, the part I'm not sure would work. Would it be possible to have enough water flow back into the barricade, to have essentially a two in one energy free filtration and airflow system? Thoughts? *Afterthought design alternative* Instead of the barricade idea, what about just placing a nozzle once there is suction, and then attach your one sided hole sponge to the end of the nozzle. Would that work???

Oh my God this is a life changer! I've been doing it wrong for year's I didn't know you had to crimp the hose while doing cleaning gravel, I would always clean the gravel and take out almost all my water, then I would have to walk all the way to my bathroom to gather water for my 30 gal I would take about 20ish trips from bathroom to fish tank now I'll probably only have to take 7 trips!!! this is going to save me so much time

I can confirm that the basters can get a bit messy, but they start up surprisingly well? Just squeeze the bulb and it does the rest. I've found that the biggest issue is that gravel can get stuck in the tube... I'm wondering if there's a way to rig it to be a less messy. Kinda wish I could cut the end to make the tip less of a gravel trap. The size is ideal for nano tanks, especially 5 gallons.

I really like how you were pinching the hose ,definitely a helpful hint.. I have watched several of your videos and are confident in your know how.. but !!! This is were I get confused.. your video shows you throughly vacuuming the substrate. Other videos I have watched say never do that .kind of rotate to different areas when u vacum.. claiming over vacuuming or vacuuming all the gravel is very bad because alot of bb is In there which will be lost.. I am definitely not questioning your method.. thoughts !!!

Newbie here and you prolly saved my fish. I always kept up with my changes n tried siphoning. The crimp technique actually gives me visible and tested results. Before using this I felt like I did twice the work without actually achieving anything.

This video just lowered my water bill. I always was turning on the faucet to get my pressure and syphon going. So basically, I had my water running down the drain while doing a water change. Thanks, Cory!

After recently reading about fish tuberculosis, I'll consider myself less of a fish keeper because I haven't sucked on a hose to get a siphon started...lol.
Great video. I'm a 45+ year hobbyist and didn't know your angle trick for getting the gravel vac primed. I've used other methods, but yours is better.

In Sept. I started watching your fishroom build. Got me started on a 4 tank wall with your design using sponge filters and a 4 outlet air pump. I just watched your planted tank videos, and I guess I'm just confused how to know when to vacuum. If fish waste helps fertilize the plants, what point is there in removing it if your tank is cycled and you have live plants?
Exactly, there is no specific point really. This is how nature works. The point of removing debris from the tank would be to get more water clarity really. Kind of like sweeping your floor. We could live on dirt floors, we prefer it to look cleaner is all. So it comes down to mostly a personal preference.

It is likely about finding balance too right. Because if there is more waste than plants are processing then it could be building a toxic environment for your ecosystem?
Nitrates build up. The only way not cleaning up your substrate could work is doing frequent large water changes to remove the waste from the water column as it breaks down. You also need a thicker than normal substrate.
Sound practice is you don't do deep gravel vacs around your plants. Another option would be to use a liquid fertilizer. Most plants will uptake micro and macro nutrients from the water column. Another option is root tab fertilizer. Either way you can still clean the waste from your substrate.
Man I wish I had you as a fish store near me, you are so passionate and helpful about the hobby. So many helpful tips, it sounds like you want the best for everyone in it as well!

So much I didn't know! I have a planted tank and I've been having difficulty keeping the ammonia levels at zero, they hover between 0/0.25 and 0.50. Little did I know I was cleaning the substrate WRONG! I look forward to more informational videos to help keep my fin babies healthy!

Hey man. Great informative channel you have here bud. After watching this video, I began brainstorming, and an idea came to mind. Now, I don't know if this would work or not like I am "trying to see it in my head", so if in fact it is dumb, I apologize.
My idea is as follows: It involves the suction tool you are using, and then this. So as to not have fish get sacked up, you barricade off a small section of the fish tank, so as to not have any fish go in it. This barricade does not necessarily have to be fitted/permanently attached. This barricade WILL need holes (multiple) to allow water into it, yet obviously small enough as to not have fish get into it. Now that I think of it, you could somehow have a sponge filter placed directly in front of the holes (and just like that, you have a sponge filter).
Now, you create the suction (as majestically as you did it in this here video), and leave it in there. Now, instead of having that water leave the tank, you have it flow back into the tank, thus effectively creating an airflow. For the suction to maintain, it would have to be a "waterfall" , so the tube would have to be somehow fixed OUT of the water.
Now, the part I'm not sure would work. Would it be possible to have enough water flow back into the barricade, to have essentially a two in one energy free filtration and airflow system?
Thoughts?
*Afterthought design alternative* Instead of the barricade idea, what about just placing a nozzle once there is suction, and then attach your one sided hole sponge to the end of the nozzle. Would that work???

Oh my God this is a life changer! I've been doing it wrong for year's I didn't know you had to crimp the hose while doing cleaning gravel, I would always clean the gravel and take out almost all my water, then I would have to walk all the way to my bathroom to gather water for my 30 gal I would take about 20ish trips from bathroom to fish tank now I'll probably only have to take 7 trips!!! this is going to save me so much time

Great video. Although I use a similar gravel vacuumer there are a whole lot of tips on method in the video I hadn't seen before and realise would make cleaning much easier - grateful for that.
