You know that water specially Dirty is hundred times worse than LITERALLY Licking a Public Toilet Seat..
Another tip to start is end of hose in buck put a turkey baster or large syringe on it then pull the plunger up fast and all the way apart it will suck up and flow :D

My husband did this the first time he tried vacuuming the gravel when I wasnt home... 😂😂 Laughed my ass off when I showed him how you can make it start siphoning without putting your mouth on it! 🤮

Hey Cory. When your store recommended running my 55 with two sponge filters i was skeptical. They heard that my goal was to create a planted community tank. After five months, the water chemistry is so good that I have a hard time justifying water changes. My fish could not be happier as evident by the amount of offspring now swimming all over the tank. My plants grow like weeds and look amazing. I appreciate the great advice that I get from you and from your store team. Thank you!!

Holy cow, this was one of the easiest to understand explanation of the nitrogen cycle and how bacteria colonizes I have ever seen. Now I think I understand why my fishless cycle is taking forever. Along with the tank and decor, I have a canister filter and obviously my tank and decor bowl has not fill up yet and/or I have so much more room still in my canister filter bowl, thus the bacteria is taking longer to fully colonize and eat the added ammonia. I'm going to keep waiting, but now I think I understand. Thx for a great video and explanation.

WOW! Five years ago, I spent over a year researching and fretting before I finally put my tank up and "cycled" it. Then waited another 6 months before I finally put fish in, I fed the water food every day! I was a wreck over the nitrogen cycle. I learned MORE in 17 minutes then I ever learned from the web! AND it was a whole lot more fun, please tell your wife thank you!!! Take good care of you and yours.

I love the way you filmed this with the cards and stuff. I had no idea about the Nitrogen Cycle until I started watching videos like this and looking on forums. It was soo confusing but this really cleared it up! Many of my fish in the past have died mysteriously, and now I understand why they did. There was probably sooo much ammonia in the tank! I feel really bad now, but luckily I am planning to get a tank with a couple mollies, so I can retry.
This video actually helped me understand that a lot better, I'm planning to work at a fish store and now I know how to explain the nitrogen cycle to customers

You are cracking me up, confusing Nitrite and Nitrate. I do similarly all the time and it makes me NUTS when I catch myself. Great video. I do like the way you visualized it.
To help me remember them, I think about them following ammonia in reverse alphabetical order.

I just wanted to say thank you; this is my to go to video to explain the Nitrogen cycle to a new fish owner. Also first video I actually understood what I was doing wrong with mine so thank you again.
My school of thought has always been that nitrite is much more dangerous than ammonia. Nitrites bond to hemoglobin (more or less) instantly and reduce the amount of oxygen the blood can carry, whereas it takes time for ammonia to cause significant damage to tissues. Obviously we don't want either of them in any readable quality in our aquariums though.
This is the single most important video for the new aquarist!!! Thank you Cory and all of the aquarium coop team that made this possible.

I'll admit, that over 20 years ago, I had 3 aquariums in my room and I didn't know about the nitrogen cycle. I have no idea how I didn't lose so many fish. I do remember testing PH and maybe ammonia, but didn't really know much else. I had no internet, and while my friend had AOL / dial-up, I never researched anything about aquariums online like we can today.
After 20+ years with no aquariums, and always wanted to get back into it, I finally bought an aquarium, and master test kit, but still did not fully know about the nitrogen cycle until I lost some fish.
With that said, I was in the fish store yesterday, and was about on my way out when this woman and her son comes in and wanted their water tested for nitrates. I was confused. If your nitrates are high, or you suspect they are, why don't you just change the darn water?... confused.
Then they start showing the clerk pictures of their fish that have died and they suspect it's the nitrates. Again, why have you not changed the water?
I have also witnessed how some clerks that work in the fish store don't even know much about fish or the nitrogen cycle, and have even heard them give incorrect or incomplete suggestions to customers before. I wanted to talk to the lady myself, but I couldn't wait any longer, they just kept talking and talking, so I decided, "Meh, they have the internet. The info is out there if they really want to know."
Later, I wondered why they had no test kit?!!! But lost a $30 fish. Sigh.
This video finally helped me understand it. Under-rated video, a must for any newbie! KUTGW.
Cory - would love if you reshot this and made it into a 5-7 minute video. I recently got my nephews into fishkeeping and am trying to teach them some of the basics, a video would really help but I don’t think they’re patient enough for a 17 minute video. Better yet - do a whole series of videos for kids!

As a Fish Noob, who recently got a 5 gallon tank with some Guppies .. and being frequently unsure if things are good/not good, and using the wal-mart test strips to check if things are ok -- this video (and i've watched 5+ other ones on the nitrogen cycle now) really helped me truly understand what exactly is happening, and i can relax, as I also see my fish are just fine, and i've just been a bit paranoid. it IS possible to set up a tank that almost never needs water changes ^^ I had accomplished it with my first guppy breeding tank tons of plants
I added sponge filters to my 50 goldfish tank with a canister filter, I can't keep plants with them and my fish really like them

I got a new tank and plan on populating it with native sunfishes I catch and some plants. I am going to try and use the local lake water, rocks and soil in the water and mix it with aquarium ready treated tap water to top off the tank. Do you think this will work in helping with the introduction of beneficial bacteria being that the lake water and rocks should have some? I understand this will introduce algae as well probably, which isn't a problem to me since a little algae should help process the nitrates until the plants take control and I can introduce some algae eating animals.

I know this is an older video but there's one spot here that was touched at 6:58 that I think is often misunderstood and has been one of the biggest problems I've had in my 5 years now of owning a tank. I have regularly had problems with what I now know is sometimes called "old tank syndrome." I had no plants and I was doing water changes but... say you have a bio-load that adds 10 ppm of nitrates every week. Then you do weekly 20% water changes. 10-20%=8. Then you add 10 more and have 18. Then you take out 3.6. then add 10 for 13.6. It takes almost 9 and a half months for that to stabilize at 40ppm and you will never see less than that. When you're doing partial water changes, no matter what the amount is, you might never keep up.
Excel can show that if you miss one week it takes 34 weeks to restabilize. If you're doing monthly water changes this takes much longer. If you're doing 50% water changes every week then it will only take 10 weeks. If your reliability goes significantly downhill you can end up with quite the runaway nitrate problem. I'm ashamed to say that most of my fish have died early from nitrate poisoning because I didn't really understand that aspect of the cycle. I didn't test regularly and my nitrates had climbed to 200 ppm and I don't know how many times that has happened, but I suspect that to be the cause of death in almost all of my fish over the years (especially since deaths have often corresponded with my cleaning up algae). Some may have also been shock at the sudden decrease in nitrates as I realized it was bad and took drastic measures, not understanding that can be bad as well.
I've essentially started over, re-educating myself and taking a completely different tactic. I know that I don't have the discipline to keep up on nitrates through water changes alone, so I'm focusing now on developing my planted life before adding more fish. My tank is very lightly stocked rn and if I can develop a good amount of plant life I'm sure I can monitor better now that I understand the importance, and take action when needed, not to replace my water changes but to make up for my failings. They look great too. Anyways, I feel like my story might be a good video subject. I'd love to see someone talk about that.
