The sequel, sort of, to the Earthbound run. This time, this video will show if it's possible to beat Mother 1 or Earthbound Zero without using any PSI or items.

Unrelated to the video itself, I happened to see its thumbnail when popping up in my suggested. This is probably the ONLY meme containing JoJo that has actually made me laugh! As someone with obsessions with both pieces of fiction, I instantly got it. That's really how EarthBound's battle gameplay can be, huh? LMAO!
Ironically, Jotaro does use PSI, since stands are manifestations of one’s psychic powers.
I like to imagine Ninten is doing the same thing. There is no way a boy can beat the shit out of an elephant with his bare hands. Ninten is actually manifesting his PSI into raw punching power

Great video! I definitely wasn't expecting M1 to be unbeatable after seeing the Earthbound run, even with a level 99 party. I thought using the flea bag glitch in the Japanese version would work, but that counts as using an item, unfortunately.
I have one thing to say about your pfp. Ninten's shirt is blue with yellow stripes, just like Ness.

Mother 1 is considered extremely difficult so I’m not surprised you can’t beat the game under theses circumstances. Still a entertaining good attempt

As much as I appreciate the unique stuff and understand the popularity of Mother 1, there is admittedly a lot of stuff that are wack once I replayed this game. Probably a good example of realizing a lot of bad stuff in a game once you take the nostalgia goggles off.

Correction 2: the correcting, sorry to be that guy, but there are some differences between the different version of Mother 1.
> Begginings has a run button that speeds up the game like frameskip in an emulator, npcs included.
> A couple places were simplified in begginings, this carried over to the GBA port.
> In the magicant dungeon, the man that blocks the exit used to teleport you back to the entrance if you answered him wrong, this was removed in Begginings, not sure about the GBA port, though.
> The ending was slightly changed in begginings.
Some other miscellaneous changes include censored dialogue and Begginings having the wort translation since it was made 25 years ago.
Fun facts:
Pippi has the same stat growth as Teddy.
You can avoid having to grind up Lloyd in the factory by leaving breadcrumbs in the rocket room and using them to remote teleport there while he's still alive.
I'm pretty sure in some version of the game it's possible to skip Ana, probably in the original JP version only.
As with the earthbound run, i'll add that this is probably possible if youlifted the equipment restriction, not so sure about a psi allowed run without items, but it's probably possible too if you're willing to savescum.
This run may not have been as interesting as the Mother 2 run, but it's still cool to see someone recognize my favorite mother game (there, i said it).
Now, the logical extreme is to take the challenge over to Mother 3, it's the easiest out of all of them and you'll be able to use Duster's thief items and Flint's power attacks to make it even easier, that said, you do need to use the knife during the drago fight, but i hope it won't be enough to invalidate potentially the most interesting run for this challenge.

Lifting equip restriction specifically doesn't make this possible either, because giegue's attacks aren't affected by defense, nor any kind of psi defense.

Nope, unfortunately, it seems Giygas's attacks have a fixed damage, or seems to bypass defenses. Even if Teddy has more HP than Ninten and Ana, Teddy would still die before Giygas dies with the rate of how much damage he can do to all of them. This is based on the limitations of how much total HP the characters could have in the game.

You can finish the game with Teddy, you just would’ve needed to immediately get to Mount Itoi, fix the boat, as well as have Eve get destroyed to get that melody. That’s when you get Teddy and kick the game’s ass.
Yeah, it would've been better if I did that. I was actually trying to do that, but I forgot the steps of how to do it. But either way, even if I did have Teddy, the amount of HP he has, even at level 99, wouldn't be enough to survive against Giygas, unless he had like a billion HP.

Not surprised it's not possible. If you REALLY want to get technical, it's possible in the Japanese version via the flea bag glitch, since you can have Teddy and E.V.E , but whether if that would count as legit or not is up to you. While I'm not sure myself, maybe the Mother 1+2 translation via Easy Ring miiight make it possible, though I honestly don't know for sure. Good video though. I always find it interesting learning nearly useless information about some 1989 JRPG game nobody but people like me care about. lol

When i played mother 1 for the first time i actually didnt know how to get to the basement so i just didnt have any items and i didnt know how to buy any either so i literally fought the enimies like this until i came back to this game like 2 years later and actually knew what i was doing

My guess is that it might be possible if you get Teddy since he has more hp than Loid. But then that would be tons of grinding again just for the chance for it to not work

Damn, I barely managed to complete this game in a normal run in like 6 FRICKING MONTHS (well, mainly due to te factthat I didn't play it daily... or did I? I don't remember).

That would be a difficult one to do. Mother 1 is practically impossible unless I hack in Ana at the start. Earthbound could allow Ness to use PSI attacks at a pretty early level, but it also means having to use it sparingly and sometimes rely on RNG. Mother 3 is a similar case, depending on the chapter or how fast I get PSI attacks. It definitely is a challenge to try, but I actually think that one would be more tedious than the ones I did lol.
@@porpoise8160 Your one chance is at the very beginning of the game. Ness can't do anything at all to attack. However, if you bring King along, he can kill all the enemies for you. Just slowly grind your way until Ness reaches level 8, where he finally learns a PSI attack. Of course, King is not attacking with PSI, but if you were go with the definition of "Ness can only use PSI attacks", then that's the only way to do it.

I didn't even use items and I didn't know it was psi, I was like that until the cemetery that I discovered that I could be cured with psi, even so I only used it for that because I didn't know I had the other abilities lol and so I spent most of the game until I got to the desert.

@@tater535 At this point in the run, I already proved beating the game without PSI was impossible. So, my next test was to reach maximum strength with any means possible, which includes using PSI to gain EXP quickly and healing up to max HP. This way, I could properly test to see if it was even possible to beat the Giygas battle without PSI nor items, even at maximum strength.

I did this run without the easy ring. I guess if you want to do an easier version of the challenge, you could use the easy ring. Though the point of this challenge was to combine every restriction I could think of to have maximum difficulty.

@@PAAF2005 Mother 1/Earthbound beginnings is definitely the most difficult, especially because of a lot of unfair mechanics. According to the creator himself, he said when creating the last area, he didn't have anybody test out the difficulty, and just packaged whatever was programmed.

Funny how you compare Ninten to Jotaro Kujo in the thumbnail, because I did some comparative research between MOTHER and JoJo (since both Ninten's family tree and Jotaro's family tree have a married couple named George and Mary).
George and Mary in both MOTHER and JJBA had an adopted child as well as a biological child.
George and Maria in MOTHER adopted Giegue, while George and Mary Joestar adopted Dio.
The biological sons being Ninten's Grandfather (MOTHER) and Jonathan Joestar (JJBA).
The biological sons eventually get married to their respective wives (Ninten's Grandfather to Ninten's Grandmother in MOTHER, and Jonathan Joestar to Erina Pendleton) and they have children of their own (Ninten's Father in MOTHER, and George Joestar II).
Ninten's Father and George Joestar II find someone they love and marry (Ninten's Father marries Carol and George Joestar II marries Elizabeth/Lisa Lisa).
Carol and Lisa Lisa then have children of their own (Carol has Ninten, Mimmie and Minnie, and Lisa Lisa has Joseph Joestar).
In conclusion: Ninten would probably be more like Joseph Joestar than Jotaro (and even then, Joseph used magic in some form).
I actually didn't think about that comparison lol, but that makes more sense. I just simply thought "Ninten is a kid, but can beat the shit out of everyone with his bare hands. Ninten must be using some punchy stand ability to have this power. Therefore, he is the same as Jotaro".
