Also, Toby Fox actually used that unused song in his old romhack! I honestly thought it was an original song he made for the hack, but TIL.
2:48 I REALLY LOVED THIS MECHANIC. it made the game so unique and tested your reflexes to quickly restore your teammate with PSI/goods before they succumb to the inevitable... i wish more RPGs had this. i see it as like "bleeding out" for fatal blows in this game, its only a matter of time to stop the bleeding. It's insane to see someone with so few subs complete such an ambitious challenge. I really hope the algorithm blesses you with this one because this was crazy.
This is partially because I suck at video games, but I barely got through that last area *with* equipment and items. The fact that you were insane enough to do it without blows my mind, even with the 10000+ attempts.
An aspect of it I wasn't expecting but makes sense, is that the biggest downsides to death in normal Earthbound is losing your PP and your other characters staying fallen. In this run though, you don't use PP, and you have infinite money to revive party members because there's nothing else to spend it on besides a house in Onett, so you may as well just bash your head in until you die every time.
@@fly_hammer I feel that, first played it when I was Ness' age, it's still my favorite game of all time, more playthroughs than anything else, I imagine you like other challenge runners are in a similar boat. In my playthough, I never ran into that other recolor of Master Barf, just the one you’re meant to run into, so it’s cool to know there’s another one!
It was one of the reasons people were worried why Earthbound wasn't getting on 'virtual console' back when that started with the Wii. That some copyright issue might show up. Fortunately, it did end up in Nintendo's console stores later on and sold pretty well for what is to many a less impactful SNES title.
Fun fact: Half of the Sanctuaries can be saved for later: The 2nd isn't needed to go to Threed, the 3rd isn't needed to go to Fourside, and you can go to Scaraba without visiting the 5th and 6th. You still need to do all of them to go to Magicant. Of course for this run it was probably better to get the experience from doing them immediately.
very good video. honestly, i was very surprised when i saw that this didn't have more views just because of how ridiculous of a challenge this is. the fact that you had the patience to spend over 10k attempts just trying to get to giygas is actually insane and if it was me, i would've broken in the first 200 and would've just used save states. also, it'd be interesting to maybe see this challenge done in mother 3, although it'd probably be easier to do in that game since only lucas and kumatora use PSI anyways.
I might do this one day, unfortunately I haven’t played mother 3 yet so attempting a challenge like this on a new game seams a tad crazy 💀 and yeah, I’m kinda patient lmao
This was incredible to watch. Earthbound is one of my favorite things. I was certain that this type of run just had to be impossible. I'm still working on my Sudden Death challenge -- getting through with no one dying, including diamondization. You'd think it'd be pretty doable, but I've failed about 30 or 40 times now 😂 I have finished a "Ness Only" run, and I got about half way through a "Ness-less" run but then got preoccupied with the Sudden Death thing.
This is a great video. While also an insane challenge, it also covers Earthbound's own *intended* insanity, making this almost, in a way, a walkthrough. Just one that, well, stinks. /ref
This reminds me of how me and my boyfriend played this game for much longer than we should have because we did not know that hotels restored HP and PP, or how to call dad to save. Had no idea what butterflies did. We just kept dying and waking up at mom's house. I didn't know poo had a mirror attack until after we became robots, still don't really understand how it works. Didn't know what praying did. We literally never used PSI shield until it was absolutely necessary when we fought the last starmen. We had a lot of fun spending our Sundays taking turns playing this game together until our eyes felt like they were bleeding. 10/10.
Even on my unarmed runs I still use PSI with Paula and occasionally Poo. You are an absolute madman and I salute you. o7 The Jeff Cookie Challenge is nothing compared to your determination.
Challenge aside, major props for managing to make this a rather interesting video. Considering the fights had you doing nothing but bash or guard every turn, you managed to pull a lot out of very little. I imagine it was very difficult.
Something you didn't seem to realize was that you can move during the build up phase of Teleport Alpha. This actually lets you finish a teleport in tight areas that even Beta can't complete in!
My friend loves to do the Cave of the Past, it's her favorite. So I got there in a save file, dumped ALL my items (except like one useless thing), and saved the game, then invited her to finish it for me. She was so pissed about having no items. She tried like twice and hasn't touched it since. So I have a certain appreciation for this video 👍
Now at the end of the video, didn't know about the beach boys sample. That just lends Even MORE credence to my theory. In like 92 or something there was an album of the Solar System released by NASA. Electromagnetic waves from all planets were recorded by probes sent in the 70's and 80's to all the planets. At earth, those waves were shifted into the audible spectrum to give us some analog of what space sounds like. This means it's hard to compare... most videos remaining that have the "songs" (sounds) are ones talking scientifically about them. It's really fascinating regardless of whether or not Giygas might actually be the only alien enemy in all of human media to have scientific basis to its musical existence!
This was such a fun way to experience this game. I've only made it up to Threed and couldn't figure out what to do next, so seeing what all's passed that town in such an interesting way felt really cool
As great as this run is... There was one PSI Teleport you could have skipped. Instead of teleporting to Magnet Hill right after getting the phone call from Mr. Spoon and then going back to Summers to head to Scaraba, you can actually wait until you have to go back to the Onett Library to get the Shyness Book. 26:42 Teleport A is actually not as hard to use as most people think because you can change direction. Yes, it's tough to change direction at the right time if you need to do that, but you should get it eventually. You can almost always find a place where Teleport A will work, you just have to look around a bit sometimes for a good spot is all. Also, I've always managed to find a spot where Teleport A can be used without ever having to turn more then once, which is a great thing since it gets harder and harder to time when to turn as you gain speed.
Good Job on your run dude this is like something that SGDQ or HD Q could just like only takes so much of contest, especially with hare hands mode being a huge thing and RPGs, overall!
1000 attempts was my guess at running away… also I remember getting to Ness’ Nightmare having already reached level 99 (I way overleveled trying to get the Sword of Kings) and being pissed that I missed out on that super level up.
Watching this a few months after my first play through ever and I’m realizing two things 1) you have the most patience possibly of any human and it kinda wants to make me be your friend lmao this video rules and was so cool to watch. Excellent job adding little fun facts like the ‘Dierdre’ sample from The Beach Boys, really helps the video feel even more fun 2) I got… insanely wildly lucky. Because I was able to march straight up to the Devil’s Machine and had zero issues beating Giygas the FIRST TRY. EVER. I realize this is crazy because I’m seeing just how much this game relies on probability and statistics to create the magic. You’re a saint for doing that shit FOR LITERAL MONTHS 😂
There's a cheat code that makes the game initiate its anti piracy behavior, spawning double the enemies. There should be a round two of this with that code active. Oh, but save states would need to be active. The game will sometimes spawn enemies or clones of Ness that freeze the game.

Jesus,, I’ve played earthbound like 7 times and when I saw this, I thought you were joking . How the hell did you do this, are you mentally okay?? But in all seriousness this was an AMAZING feat, oh my god. I’m subscribing for sure, that was …, I’m speechless, I don’t have any words for this. Holy shit. I think you’ve won the title of biggest earthbound fan.
Banger content, I applaud the dedication and patience it took to record this run (twice! no less) A well earned subscription.
What an amazing run. The sheer amount of determination and patience is insane
NO PSI
NO Equipment
YES Ness
NO Items
NO Savestates
man this is so cool! what an insane challenge, your dedication is incredible!!
Usually dont sub from one video, but this shows such great effort and a great performance, thanks for this video +1 sub
10000 attempts. I love Earthbound but that's insanity. I almost want to try this challenge, but I know I wouldn't be able to do it!
Finally good earthbound content. I Love when the video is sped up and the characters move really fast.
Yeah this took way too long for me to not use speed up
this video is gonna blow up i can feel it
amazing job!! youve got some great production and the dedication is crazy- would you consider doing this type of run with mother 1 or 3? (more realistically mother 3- mother 1 is brutal enough as is)
In the future yes, but right now earthbound is the only one in the series I’ve played
This is very well made! You have definitely inspired me to do some Earthbound challenges!
This is just..amazingly well done and edited and Earthbound content is 2024? You have got yourself a like and a new subscriber
Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, EarthBound is goated
Good Job on your run dude this is like something that SGDQ or HD Q could just like only takes so much of contest, especially with hare hands mode being a huge thing and RPGs, overall!
Why did you not pray during battles? It can heal you, remove negative status, and cause negative status effects.
1000 attempts was my guess at running away… also I remember getting to Ness’ Nightmare having already reached level 99 (I way overleveled trying to get the Sword of Kings) and being pissed that I missed out on that super level up.
Seeing this with the other 2 games in the series would be painful for you but probably entertaining for everyone else!
Threed was originally named Threek, but was changed because it could be read as Three-K.
Imagine being Paula, getting saved by Ness and the next thing he does is to throw hands with a Bear
The Beatles took that melody from the French national anthem.
The Beatles > France
Watching this a few months after my first play through ever and I’m realizing two things
1) you have the most patience possibly of any human and it kinda wants to make me be your friend lmao this video rules and was so cool to watch. Excellent job adding little fun facts like the ‘Dierdre’ sample from The Beach Boys, really helps the video feel even more fun
2) I got… insanely wildly lucky.
Wouldn't that still result in Pokey resetting your entire save file at the very end?
Why don't you do it then?
very epic challenge run, big respect for tackling something this ridiculous
"NO PSI" what did I do to you
