Oh my goodness I kid you not…I was packing a new bucket of white rice about 30 minutes ago and I wasn’t sure how many to use. Those things have been a mystery. I couldn’t believe it when this popped up!
This is good information to have.
YES MA'AM !!! You provide innumerable people with valuable information. You have shared many new concepts to me personally, therefore, who says: you can't teach an old dog new tricks?! You are simply put: a wealth of HELPFUL information and speak to us in a fashion that is very understandable no matter a person's education level!! I appreciate your method of sharing and teaching!! You are an unsung hero! Thank you for all you do!
You are so welcome!
We store our open bag of oxygen absorbers (25/bag) in a zip lock bag with air pushed out, and then place that inside a vacuum canister that is hand pumped to a vacuum. This way, they can be stored for months even after having been opened. We purchase the O2 absorbers in cases of 2 or 3 thousand / box. They are very sensitive to open air as mentioned in this video, only times 10. 😮
I'm glad that you said that your over kill the size of the Oxygen Absorbers. I want to make sure that it's doing it's job on absorbing. Thanks for this video.
This video came at the perfect time. Got my first package and wasn't completely confident on how to use them. Thanks for educating us newbies.
You are so welcome!
Thank you, Leisa. I'm glad not the only one that questioned O2 absorbers.
You bet!
Alaskan prepper did an experiment and kept rice and other things in the trunk of his car for 5-7 years and the rice was still good. No mylar bags or anything, left in factory bags.
Yeah, good luck with that. Rats, mice and who knows what else. Not worth the repair bill.
@@SuttonsDaze I've had a bag of rice in factory bag on the floor of my basement and no mice. I catch them under my sink but for whatever reason they leave my storage area alone. Obviously I'm not saying to store food in trunk I'm pointing out that rice and beans are a lot more resistant to going bad than people think.
I just watched this twice. Lol Thank you for breaking this down for beginners.
You didn't add freeze drying food. You absolutely can use oxygen absorbers with freeze-dried cheeses, soups, powders, and even ice cream. Harvest Right has a complete book on this. After we got a freeze dryer, it's a game changer.
Thank you for the teaching , Thank you Leisa
You're welcome
Thank you for the info. I just purchased some mylar bags & oxygen absorbers and will be using them for the first time.
How funny, I literally just loaded up some Mylar bags today 😂 maybe it’s the inventory part of the challenge that has us all repackaging for long term storage. Love it thx Leisa
😊once again 😅your knowledge is invaluable
Thank you for great canuary season already looking forward to next year
Thank you. You have such a calming voice. So much knowledge! You should write a book!
amzn.to/3ML0uIl
First I want to say....THANK YOU for your soothing voice! Just tried to listen to someone, whose voice was like nails on a chalkboard. lol
Secondly, thanks for breaking it all down! God Bless You!
Thanks again for another informative video. You are so knowlegable. I have the utmost admiration for you. I have learned so much. 😊
Oxygen absorbers are a confusing subject for me so thank you.
You're very welcome
Thank you 😊
Thank you for this information. You have answered so many of my questions.
I love this video!! They are so confusing! I am like you, more is better.
Glad you did this those o2 absorbers always confused me. I'm taking notes. TY for this schooling
The size info is very useful ❤️
You are a wealth of knowledge. ❤ thank you so much for all you do.
I’m going to save this video for future reference ❤
Another of Lisa's excellent videos. So informative, so eloquent. I've subscribed, even if I do live in the (increasingly impoverished) UK.
PS Lovely diction. Canadian?
Thank you for clarifying this. I was completely confused
Thank you. very much appreciated!
Good information you answered a lot of my questions i vacumm seal my flour and then added the absorber and wasn’t sure if that was right!
Very helpful, thanks Leisa.
You're so welcome!
Thank you for this great information! I appreciate you.
Thank you x😊
Good Work Leisa This is Great Advice! Especially to those who are just beginning
to join the rest of us Preppers !! 😂lol, I believe I have all those Foods!❤🕊️ Lord's Blessings All From the Sn❄️w Coverd Foothills of the Olympics 🏔️❄️❄️☃️❤️🕯️
I can't stand it when the O2 absorbers don't suck the bag in...I don't want to break into the bag and have to put in another absorber because of course you have to do ten bags at a time. So, who knows if the food inside is actually going to store long term when you leave it? Very frustrating.
Yes! I don’t quite believe it is working right when it does that.
Very helpful....l have been wornder about this topic for some time.....thank you
Is there any place in Michigan where they have get togethers for like minded people?
Check out the Michigan prepper groups on fb
I found politics groups on Telegram. Rescue Michigan, etc. Went to a Prepper thing at a church but pretty much for those completely new to it.
I give up was trying to help. Comment deleted twice
Thank you ! Learning alot from you. ❤ Take care and God bless . 😘
Can you put wheat berries in zip lock s with oxygen absorbers and then put in a food grade 5 gal bucket with tight lids?
Zip lock is not air tight
Very helpful. Thank you!!
So, what if I vacuum seal 4 or 5, five pound bags of flour. I'm guessing put an oxygen absorber in each vacuum sealed bag and then put the bags in a 5 gallon bucket?
Commercial flour is not good for long term storage. I put it in air tight containers and work through it in a year.
That means if I want to get one or two spice jars out of the bucket, I will have to replace the oxygen absorber.
Do you vacuum seal the absorbers after you use them or just put in a jar and add lid and ring. I better unseal my flour and sugar and use the bags elsewhere. Thanks for the info 😮
I’m in Australia we don’t measure bags by pints or quarts so I’m still confused which size to use could you show the bags on a video so I can work it out please
Quart - Liter Pint - 1/2 liter Easy enough to look up :-)
Than you!
I have question. I got some to put in white rice. Then I oven canned the rice but I didn't use it because I didn't know if it could withstand the heat or if heated, would it affect my rice or the integrity of the oxygen absorber. Any advice about to add if you're oven canning? Id love to know your answer on that as well as water bath and pressure. I'm brand new to canning and Thank you for videos and advice!
Never, ever, ever oven can. The jars are not made for dry heat, call ball if you don't believe me. All you've done is expose you food to heat and impacted the integity of your jars
@@SuttonsDaze Thank you for your response. I appreciate your advice.
Someone may have already asked this question: if you have a low-number CC pack, can multiples be used in a particular container, or does it have to be one absorber with a higher CC amount? For example, could three 100 CC packs be used instead of one 300 CC pack to get the same outcome? Hope that makes sense😊
As many as you need
I’m late to the party.. just started prepping really good so my question is this.. so do I need oxygen absorbers for rice and beans if I’m vacuum sealing?? And if not, how long will those last just vacuum sealed? Thanks
Vacuum seal bags are more air permeable than mylar. That being said, if you vacuum seal, you dont need 02 absorbers.
Lisa how about GRITS , FLOUR and not sure what else . If you have Gluten Free Flour never been opened and still in original box . How long will it stay good.? My daughter has issues with gluten. I didn't realize time has slipped away but it was BEST BY 12/ 22 . Life is a Blessing but things come up and time slips away so fast. I would appreciate your opinion.. How long does box cake mixes last if it was in your home , how far out would you use after BEST BUY ? OH another thing is what about DRY DOG FOOD with the O2 absorbers and mylar bags ? I am so worried as we have 2 German Shehards and a Dalmation yes they eat a lot and dog food is going up & up. THANKS for the video's . I got sick and my Family used a lot of my can preps but it is OK that is also a needed time for preps. I did buy a canner but so SCARED to use it as I did HOT WATER BATH years ago for just pickles and tomato's . I have a bad back and my husband is bone to bone in knees. Our daughter has Hashimoto's and few other issues due to Thyroid. So she eats a lot of fresh spinach , salads, lots of veggies etc no dairy or gluten.
So when you open the plastic the oxygen absorber is ready to drop in the Mylar bag? Do you have to tear one open or they just start working as soon as air hits them? Thanks really interesting stuff
The second it leaves the wrapper, it is activated.
@@SuttonsDaze Thanks
Do not use oxygen absorbers with baking soda ir baking powder. They will explode
They drive me nuts trying to figure out which to use, all mine come in grams packets. I think and hope the two cubic feet is the size of a 5 gallon bucket. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Thank you Leisa! Very informative. Curious since I've never used Mylar bags, will a Food Saver on seal be able to seal those or do I need to buy something to seal them with?
I use a hair straightner
Unfortunately no,but ill have a video soon on mylar
Very helpful. I've never used O2 absorbers because of the very reasons you stated - not sure when and when not to use them. Haha! Light your money on fire - I think I know some of those folks.
How do you store the oxygen absorber you don't use ❤
In a sealed Mason jar
@@SuttonsDaze I will try the Mason jar ,I left the unused ones in the bag they came in I taped closed the bag and now they're hard as a rock ,are they still good to use ? Thanks for the response ☺️
Do you know if it is ok to vacuum seal instant rice?
Absolutely it is
@@SuttonsDaze thank you!
Oa's vs desiccants...now that's confusing!!!!
Dessicated remove moisture, OAs remove oxygen
Thank you but what about flour??
No need
Is there any use for an O2 absorber, and a packet that keeps it dry,...... (can't think of the term or how to spell it.) at the same time?
Dessicant
No
I hope you don't suffer an earthquake there. Those large jars on top of the shelf are going to be toast.
Not good!
What about popcorn?
Yes
They are confusing and most don't come with any instructions. The hubby ordered a 50 count one time and I kid you not, they came in a ziploc bag inside a box. Totally worthless, but price wise he thought he was getting a good deal.
👍🇺🇸
I don't bother with them yet.
Then you don't have enough food if you haven't used them yet.
Liesa, your advice is always appreciated! I know that I can trust what you say and that your do plenty of research. Thank you so much for your dilligence!!
You are so welcome!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thank you for all you do with videos and Canuary, you work very hard. God Bless.
Way back in 1998 I started an experiment. I bought white rice, pasta, and lentils with the curiosity of how long they'd last. Long story short, they're all still good (if a touch stale) after 25+ years, just stored in an airtight container in my bedroom closet. These are the things that are gonna save you in a long term emergency. It's boring, yeah. But it's calories! I have a water tote with 1200 pounds of white rice in it, for "just in case." For the things that need O2 absorbers, I just use them within a year or two....I'm so lazy, lol.
you should be eating and replacing, rotating stores old eat ,new purchase store
@@mikepoindexter3472 yeah, that's what i do, I just have a few pounds in my long term experiment.
Hey Leisas loosing it, been around long before that tho. You're coming along wonderfully. I've come to wonder if O2 absorbers are really worth the cost, I use rubber ring buckets and haven't had any problems with 4-5 yr old products. Does it really make a difference?
I guess it depends on your climate and how long you want it to last, I don't use them on everything, but I do use some.
Thank you, cool topic great due diligence!
Glad you enjoyed it!
As always great info and very much appreciated.
Hi Leisa, it's always a good day when I watch your videos. Thank you for this vital information. It really helps us to understand what we need to do with different sized containers. I received my January Thrive Life shipment today. I really love their products. I use them at the least once a week. Usually more. The broccoli is fantastic and when reconstituted tastes at least as delicious as fresh broccoli as a side dish for a meal. I'm taking advantage of many of Thrive Life's sales and I have opted for monthly delivery because that saves me money. Another option that is as good as money in the bank is ordering at least $99 dollars of food to get free shipping. I also love the fact that there are a bazillion recipes on their website. Thank you for getting me to think about Thrive Life. Have a great weekend.
Thank you leisa, i had just seen a vacuum sealer for mason jars & people were chatting about if you still needed the absorbers. I'm able to use the one that came with my vacuum sealer machine but wasn't sure when you need to add the oxygen absorbers. You always seem to get us alot of information that we need. 😊
I try
I vacuum seal mine as soon as I pull out what I need.
Hi, sorta new to this dehydrating and f drying for short and long term. I’ve had my f dryer about 2 yrs now. I only did the bread test and a marshmallow and skittle load for grand daughters but then got long covid which I’m still fighting. I now have cold and a ton of side effects from the3 v shots we stupidly took. Daughter and granddaughters are still having terrible side effects too. So short story there was little time to concentrate on dehydrating and f drying. I have stored white rice and noodles in half gallon jars, cereals and crackers too. How long are these shelf stable. I did vacuum sealed them. I love seeing your thrive life stuff behind you. I’m a consultant and have a ton. What I want to do is save my TL for the long term and use the stuff I FDAnd Dhydrate. I’m just confused how long my stuff is shelf stable. Thank you for this great video.
I love your hair, looks wonderful on you.
Thank you so much
What I have started doing is take my individual soda bottle (16.9 oz or 20 oz) to store beans or lentils or dry things like that . I then have put in an oxygen absorber and crank down the lid of the bottle. After a while the plastic of the bottle will suck in showing that it is completely sealed.
Thanks Leisa. This was very helpful. I started dehydrating peppers, onions and tomatoes last year. I added oxygen absorbers to the peppers and onions only since they were crispy dry. Is this OK or because I vacuum seal them in pint jars there is not a need? ~ Rhonda
Yes, it's ok either way
Those things always confuse me.. glad you touched on this subject. I second guess myself all the time. I taken notes of this.
Well my sweet friend, I did not know you had to use oxygen absorbers for spices. I just put them in their original containers in a small food grade bucket. I guess I'd better buy some.
Where do you buy your oxygen obsorbers? I had purchased some on Amazon but they were a horrible quality.
Check the link below
Thank you for a great video 🙏🏻 What About dehydrated potato slices I want to store In some Jars wich I cant wacuum seal ? Hugs from Denmark
Did you mention common white, flour? How long will flour last in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers?
A year to two
Awesome information. Thanks another Michigan girl! ❤
You are so welcome!
BEST 11:45 ON YOU TUBE!!!!
Very informative. Now I'll feel better using these gems. Thank you for all you do. God bless you.
Love the hair Leisa, looks good on you. Thanks you the info . I got a freeze dry . I love my freeze dryer. I have a small house it saving my some space in my house.
Leisa,
Thank you so much for these instructions.
I bought some and the information that came with them was fage.
Now I don't have to do a search and secure. Thank you for all your help.
Been trying to find better ways to store dry goods. This year the mice have been outrageously plentiful and a nightmare. Have not had this problem in 6-7 years. So I've got to find a way to put a stop to their mischief.😕😞😔🥺
Hate using poison due to all of our pets.
Great info; appreciate blog post as reference. A few yrs ago, I ordered from wallaby -bags & absorbers made to go together - to get right size.
Are they
Very expensive to use
That's a matter of perspective. Check the link below to check prices
Thank you, Leisa. I have never used or investigated how to use o2 absorbers. This is a great basic info video for us that have never used them before.
I know it, but I forget it! LOL Great video! Thanks for the reminders!!
Loving the new look! Always a great source of information on canning! Thank you for all you do!!!!
Good tip on buying the absorbers individual packaging, I like that idea better.
You are marvelous! I have watched hundreds of dehydrating videos and thus for you are the most informative. I had sooo many questions about absorbers and you pretty well answered them all. I do have one question, can you put to many absorbers in a jar or mylar bag of say.........dehydrated sliced apples?
No, I mean it would be a waste of money but the food would be fine
Can you use O2 absorbers for storing egg noodles, or can you even store egg noodles in jars, hope to hear back soon, you are my go to girl, God Bless
I dont store egg noodles long term. Not recommended
@@SuttonsDaze Thank you for this info ☺️
Thank you for sharing this with us!!
Do you have a book to purchase? You have so much great information and in case we don’t have internet!😊
Check out the link to my website, you can print it off.
I was sealing Mylar bags and glass jars with oxygen absorbers today. I did 1/2 gallon with 300cc. I go over kill sometimes, lol! I have a system go fast. Last few get double OA if I have extra’s. Food is an investment. Thank you!! PS, your hair is so cool!
Thank you!
One thing that I forgot to mention about Thrive Life is that I have now started ordering the broccoli in #10 cans because it goes so fast because it is so delicious. I also have made cream of broccoli soup with it and that is fantastic! I'm going to try using it in stir fry dishes like sweet and sour chicken. Thrive Life has increased the amount of vegetables we eat each week and I'm getting spoiled by not having to chop the food!
Great tip!
Thank you. This is on my to do this summer. Ice cream pails from our local cal shop. Need to research mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. You make it all so doable. Thank you. Will check 😊 your list. Love the hair.
Glad it was helpful! Check out the link below
If I vacuum seal stuff instead of using mylar bags, is it still a good idea to put Oxygen absorbers in them? Kept watching and you answered my question 😂
There is no need
