I place an oxygen absorber on the bottom of the food, a food grade desiccant at the top, and also vacuum seal my jars as extra protection for my long term food storage.
I do that also. I may be going over board with it all but I don't want to loose any food. I am retiring in a few years and food is not what I want to worry about.
actually you need to put the desiccant at the bottom and the oxygen absorber at the top, as there is more oxygen at the top . The desiccant takes time to remove all the moisture. the oxygen absorber only takes up to 4 hrs to complete
I just use 400cc Oxygen Absorbers in Everything & be Done with it! I played the What Size Oxygen Absorber Game for a bit but now I no longer have to as my 400cc's take care of everything. Stop Guessing or trying to go by Charts just get the Larger CC ones & use them in Every Storage Container as they are not expensive! Stop with the Guessing Game!!! I use a Pint Jar/Mylar bag (400cc), I use a Quart Jar/Mylar Bag (400cc), I use a 1/2 Gal Jar/Mylar Bag or a Gallon Jar/Mylar Bag (400cc). Doesn't get any easier than that!!!
I make padded sleeves for my bottles that blocks out light as well as protects against breakage from bottles knocking into each other. We also have earthquake bars so the bottles won’t fall off the shelf. 💕

The ForJars vacuum sealers are much better quality and work much better for the regular mouth jars than the FoodSaver brand. They also come with a small hand pump. I own both and only use the ForJars ones now.
Thank you for this information. My Food Saver is on it's last leg. I have had it for a good many years and it has worked well, but I am shopping around.
you two are helping me so much- very new to O2 absorbers- but I noticed you have large bottles from other foods that you are reusing ie; the gallon bottle- how are you resealing them-do the O2 absorbers do the trick- I can reseal smaller ones no problem (use a canister and a very old food saver- have a heavy duty restaurant one for sealing) but not those very large jars would love to reuse my super large pickle jars= thank you
We use the same O2 absorbers you guys do, they work great! However we store our unused absorbers in a quart jar and after sucking the air out using the vacuum pump feature on the same device you guys use, the little oxygen indicator goes from pink, blue when opened and then back to pink again after the storage bottle is resealed. Just thought you might be interested in that info...😘
I love my jars! I don’t use them a lot for freeze dried food because I worry about the light. I do keep the fruit in them because the grands go through them so quickly.
You are already oversizing based on those numbers -- that is about the O2 if the jar is empty. For me 300cc is the cheapest and I do vacuum seal. I have a Foodsaver, but there are inexpensive alternatives and for my limited counter space they can be a lot more convenient. Not that it matters but I tend to buy in 10s too. The little bags are generally mylar (not aluminized) so I just reseal those bags as I think I get less O2 exposure. I too have had leaky bottles.
Great video! I freeze dry and only open the oxygen absorbers when I've got everything packaged and I'm ready to seal. Good to know I've been doing it correctly.
Hey y'all my question is can I use mylar & OA's with Post Grape Nuts cereal and Honey bunches of oats vanilla flavor, HBO w/almonds and honey and Post Wheat chex cereal? Also hope I didn't mess up, but added OA's to my white/yellow popcorn kernels. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!
How do you feel about vacuum packing OTC medications with O2 absorbers? Buying at Costco means I get 1000 ibuprofen at one time and will not use all of them for a very long time. I've been vac sealing 200 in a batch but never thought about adding an O2 absorber until now. Thoughts?
Kylene, I would like to ask 2 questions... I have dried whole raspberries which have a date if 6/24. Can I can place these in a glass jar with an oxygen absorber to preserve long term? Also, I have dried butter powder (grass fed butter (pasteurized cream, milk solids). Can I also put this in glass jars for long-term storage, and if so, do I use an oxygen absorbers or do I need to vacuum seal the jars? (I would use half pint canning jars).
placing the OA in the bottom first, gives them extra time to soak up oxygen needlessly straight from the atmosphere. You should fill your containers first with your product. When you are all ready then pop in the oxygen absorber and seal. That way the oxygen absorber only takes oxygen from the sealed container.
No. Ramen noodles are high in fat fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/171177/nutrients Fat goes rancid in storage. Low fat options like elbow noodles or spaghetti noodles store much better.

Advice needed guys, if i remember correctly you guys live in Utah. What is the best place you have found local to get bulk grains? Lehi mills? Need a recommendation. Also corn, rice, beans ect.. thank you 😊
We purchase a lot of our wheat from Dave's Wheat in Delta, Utah. facebook.com/profile.php?id=100079706554833 I usually get it already in the buckets. Not the least expensive but the white wheat is awesome. WinCo is a good option for bulk foods. They will order it in for you in bags. I also like to get it from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Home Storage Center already in #10 cans. providentliving.churchofjesuschrist.org/food-storage/home-storage-center-locations-map?lang=eng I watch Costco or Sam's Club for bulk beans and rice. Corn is hard to find. I usually store cornmeal in smaller containers.
Dry pasta like macaroni does well in a reduced oxygen environment. You can vacuum pack or use an oxygen absorber or both. Goal is to remove the oxygen.
Oxygen absorbers work with moisture to reduce oxygen. QUESTION: What are your thoughts about using desiccant packs in concert with the oxygen absorbers? GREAT content, by the way. 😄
Hey guys. Thanks for all the great info. But....I still have a problem. I recently ordered 02 absorbers from Amazon. I was supposed to get 2 packs. One of 100cc absorbers and 1 pack of 1000cc absorbers. I don't think that is what I got. The 100cc absorbers are TINY! They look like they should be AT MOST 50cc. ... absorbers that the company is claiming are 1000cc look just like the 100cc sized absorbers that I have watched dozens of preppers use as 100 or 200cc. Any chance you guys might consider a short tutorial on recognizing by shape & size?? I hate to be unsure....and at the same time I don't want to just throw my money away. Thanks!

There must be a way to know if the o2 absorbers are still good. I have 2 of those indicators on my counter for a couple of months now and they are still pink they have never changed colors.
On one of your posts you said a gallon Mylar bag only needed a 300-400cc oxygen absorber. So why is it different (800cc for gallon jar) for a jar than a bag? Is that because you can't push out the extra air? I am just super confused!
We have a few jars of freeze dried foods that weren't quite full when we put the oxygen absorbers in. Did we actually take out all of the oxygen if the freeze dried veggies only filled 2/3 of the jar?
@TheProvidentPrepper im making freeze dried fruits in sealed bags. Im noticing some are becoming soft and mushy as opposed to hard and crunchy. Will oxygen absorbers help? Most the bags are sold within a month
should you store the o2 absorbers in a small jar with rice -then vacuum seal the jar? sorry to be asking so many questions on many of your posts- new to this thanks
300-500cc is just fine for a filled one gallon Mylar bag. This calculation is from the manufacturer to remove all of the oxygen from an empty jar. The Mylar bag will be filled and a 300-500cc should be just fine.
800cc oxygen absorber will remove all the oxygen from an empty 1 gallon container, so depending what your packaging that maybe more than twice what you need, but i agree its always best to use more than you need.
Helpful, however, you don't make clear that different sized absorber packets are calibrated to different levels of cc. You just say, "this jar needs 100cc," which to a novice is just confusing.
You do not have to use an oxygen absorber with dry goods like white rice, rolled oats, etc. I do use one with freeze dried foods because they are more sensitive and it is so frustrating to go back and find a jar that is ruined. It also depends on the quality of your vacuum sealer.

They measure the O2 around them. I believe some ship them to show the packaging is intact, which only indirectly shows is the OA might be bad.
