    This "green comet" is rare because it hasn't been seen since the stone age! Its orbit around the sun is so massive, that it will be another 50,000 years before it returns again. (So maybe take a look while you can).
    Currently, it is not visible to the naked eye in the night sky, so use a pair of binoculars, or a telescope to see it. Use a stargazing app on your smartphone to locate the comet, and point your telescope in that direction. (You SHOULD be able to find it!)

    The comet name is C/2022 E3 ZTF. Each letter holds a significant meaning. C representing it to be a non-periodic comet. Е3 represents the month it was discovered, which is March. 2022 represents the year of discovery and ZTF is the observatory that observed it.

    Nice one Trevor, knew you'd grab this one. It is moving at one heck of a rate against the stars. The green comes from Dicarbon, two carbon atoms stuck together; the green wavelength light is emitted as they are split apart by the sun. I believe the Dicarbon is formed from organic material and by solar action as the comet gets closer to the Sun. Great inspiring video as ever and I've not managed to see it with binoculars either, it is quite faint.

    • @F14AB
      @F14AB ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also add one thing to your very interesting post: the comet is only 1 kilometer in size vs Hale-Bopp which was I believe 38 kilometers in size. I watched Hale-Bopp over multiple nights, it was totally spectacular! Btw, using my Pentax 20x60 binoculars I could not see C3 either. However I have photographed it. Clear sky’s everybody!

    Great video, thanks! But just to comfort your wife: Although I knew exactly where it was I never saw it through my binoculars too. But I never took the time to get my eyes really adjusted to the night since I was going in and out while taking the pictures from the balcony of the hotel in the ski resort in Tirol Austria we are at right know ⛷ ☃❄. But I caught it in camera, with my dslr, a tripod and the stock 70-300 lens at about 250mm, loved it! Now it's snowing, that's fine for a winter vacation too 😅.
    Edit: Thanks to your video a re-did the stacking, I hadn't thought of it's fast movement 🙈 ... and I really like it! 45 pictures, no dbf-frames, but I'm really happy - and reading other comments I got really lucky to even have gotten a chance 🤩!

    Actually comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) may not return. It may be propelled into interstellar space after this orbit.

When taking our dog out for a late night pee a couple of weeks ago and using Stellarium as a guide I took a long exposure photo of the night sky to the North using my Pixel 7 phone set to it's highest ISO and to my surprise I caught a green blob in the right place. A couple of nights later I managed to capture much better photos including the faint tail using my Pentax KP and D-FA 150-460 lens mounted on a tripod, I could see a fuzzy outline through the lens then imaged the comet with 12,800 ISO and 10 second exposures. Damn, where you live, skies are very clear! In my native country there have been only 5 hours of sunlight in entire month

    Your wife coming out to see the comet at the end.... so relatable! Same sleepy reaction like my wife usually does! 😅 She's like "Are you REALLY sure all of this is worthy? I'm going back to bed... cheers!" 🤣

    Here in India , I saw that green comet yesterday on 2nd Feb at
    19 :13.
    It was clearly visible with naked eyes .I spotted it in northwest direction and after few minutes it got disappeared in North direction.
    Firstly I thought it was starlink satellite ( or something like that ) because of its tail . But then I googled and found that it was that comet only and not any satellite .
    But to my surprise, it was not green ( with naked eyes)
    I am confused if was that starlink satellite or this green comet which is everywhere in news and was expected to be seen on 1st/2nd Feb.

    Thank you for the photos, my friend and I went out to see it but the Moon was giving off such a huge ring of light that we could never see it. Defiantly need a new telescope. But, I got to see it here, thank you!!!!

    All the astronomy apps out there I've tried with "live view" modes, they all show it in different positions in the sky toward the North, which is hopeless. Hale-Bopp back in 1997 was so much easier to track even with light pollution, but this green comet is nothing but illusive and the sub zero temperatures didn't help either.

    Your telescope must be so good that it can penetrate clouds, because last time we saw Sun where I live was in November 2022.

    That capture is absolutely obscene. Your skills are incredible Nd to call yourself an amateur at this is really playing yourself down. Such incredible photography and processing skills. I am constantly amazed at every video of yours I wafch.

    Great Images Trevor, Reminds me of those funny priceless commercials;
    ASI2400MC Camera, $3000
    SkyWatcher Esprit 100 Telescope, $3200
    EQ6R GoTo Mount, $2000
    Misc "Must have" accessories, $4000
    Enough energy drinks to stay awake for the duration, $200
    4 more rigs ready to go in the garage behind you, $$$$
    Waking up your wife in the middle of the night in freezing cold to see the "once in a lifetime rare green comet"
    Resulting in "she never found it" as she reluctantly scurry's dressed in her house coat and slippers back inside to bed, PRICELESS!
    Great Video, Love your channel!
    More important though , How's that guide graph?

    To be fair it is very faint in binoculars, that's why she didn't see it. The Moon doesn't help matters any. I saw it as a small gray smudge in 8x50's. My evscope found it easily.

    It's quite amazing, few can find it with binoculars, and so many news sites told people it would be visible to the naked eye. Yet, even those of us with nice cameras and zoom lenses, using a star tracker could photograph it, but some of the images out there are so misleading. 600mm of zoom, or more for some photos, 50-100 photos, a week of full editing, to produce one photo. I have a few shots of this comet, none as nice as yours, but I have photos, I took myself, from my backyard.

    You should make a video of the DSS vs IPP comet stacking. I'm having a nightmare of a time trying to get DSS to stack this properly.

    Beautiful. Love it!
    Of course she couldn't find it. -11degrees , 2am ..and you ask the poor sleepy soul to align the binoculars to the scope. The binoculars were so misaligned, she might have been looking at a different postcode!
