In this video, I’ll prove that you don’t need an expensive camera to take incredible astrophotography images. The camera used in this video is an old Canon EOS T3i, which is actually a great little astrophotography camera.
To be honest, knowing HOW to capture great data, and image processing skills are much more important than the camera you use. I hope you enjoyed this video, and subscribe if you haven’t already!

Don’t get me wrong, I love watching your videos but to say it’s not bad for a “$200” camera is a bit misleading when you have a $400 tracker, $500 lens, $150 light pollution filter, and various other expenses like tripod, dew heater, and remote. Easily in the $1500 range if you pick a cheap tripod... a budget rig when compared to using dedicated imaging equipment for sure but still misleading to say a cheap DSLR did this when the real magic happens with a steady tripod, tracker, and modded camera with a filter... all I’m saying is $200 and eBay is t getting you there. And yes, it’s still expensive. However, still love to see your videos, keep them coming.

Is it more expensive than nature, landscape, wildlife, wedding, architectural photography? If you haven't noticed, photography itself can be expensive. And remember the old adage; you get what you pay for. In other words, this is an inexpensive SOLUTION to the expenses associated with higher end astro-photography or maybe, just maybe, astro-photography isn't for you.

    • @gojaimo
      @gojaimo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +440

Patrick Guilfoyle what the heck are you talking about... I simply said that saying a $200 camera from eBay will not get you those results alone. You COULD say for under $1500 including a self modded camera from eBay, you can do this... also, don’t presume to know what is and isn’t for me... I have several William Optics, Orion, Celestron, ES, and Meade scopes along with a few iOptron and Celestron mounts, ZWO cameras, etc... I know EXACTLY how expensive this is and can be. Although $1500 is an INEXPENSIVE entry into this hobby many will consider it expensive because it is an expensive hobby.

@@patrickguilfoyle8884 Agree that photography is an expensive hobby. But the point here is that, it requires a of investment just to get started in deep sky astro photography (tracker, filters, heater, good tripod, dedicated lens etc.)! Any other type of photography can be started with a cheap camera, kit lens and cheap tripod at best.
Anyway, great video as always. :)

Very informative and well presented video.
In the early 90's I built a barn door tracker with a curved rod driven by an old turntable motor. Balanced everything as best I could, pointed the hinge at Polaris and used an old film camera to photograph the Constellation Orion. I managed to get a few passable photos out of 2-3 rolls before the motor burned up. Most were over or under exposed or smeared due to tracking error. I considered it a success but nowhere near what is possible today with limited means. If you are here watching and interested in astrophotography I would definitely advise considering the Sky Watcher.

Great video! Ppl still do not understand photography as a hobby or a job, is expensive to start and maintain, no matter what. It just has a "relatively cheap" way, or "expensive" way of starting the photography journey. No way around it. By photography, I mean the one using the dedicated camera, not the iPhone photography sector (not saying cellphone photography is bad, actually, the camera in your phone is very good). No matter is Astrophotography, landscape, wildlife, or even street photography (yeah, this one can be a bit cheaper).
When I was in middle school, I used a Nikon D80 with a kit lens to take astrophotos. Luckily I was grouped on a field trip by my hobby class teacher; Biology was my hobby at that time btw, not Astro. ( The hobby class is popular in my country, China, kids always join after-school hobby classes in the Children's Palace and often have amazing field trips along the course). We traveled to observe the Perseids meteor shower, but unfortunately, there was none of them :(. That trip was my first time both taking astrophotography and using a "professional" Goto star tracker that can hold two DSLRs at the same time. Our teacher was brave enough to let two kids fully control this machine🤣. I was a nube but the other kid seemed to have some knowledge to use it. We ended up spending a whole night playing with this tracker and tasks lots of photos. The photo quality wasn't good because of the knowledge I had at that time, but anyhow, it was a great experience for me getting into this hobby.
To be honest, in most cases, just bring your kit lens, or get a cheap wide-angle manual focus lens like a Samyang 14 f2.8. With a great clear sky, you can shoot beautiful milky ways already. Indeed, the deep sky looks fascinating, but you not only need more $$$$ to buy the lens, tracker, stable tripods, extra ball head, or even modify your camera. But also, you need tons of time waiting for the camera to be exposed. Those fascinating shots on Instagram or TH-cam often took 2 hours, 3 hours; some took a few days of total exposing time, and many hours of Photoshops later on. Unless you are retired or still a college student, there is not a lot of time to spend on to both: find a clear night +Spend an entire night + Hours of Photoshop later on. 🤐

There is this cool app that can do all that on your phone. When you press the shutter button, it uses the orientation, location of your camera and time to go download the NASA image you want to have. Much faster and easier than other methods---and you don't have to find a low light pollution area. And the images from Hubble are pretty amazing.

So most of you complaining about how this isn't really a cheap rig should not forget that a lot of us already have at least some of this gear.
Most people have a tripod. a lot of people already have a remote shutter release. I still have my old T3i that I still use to take hiking b/c of it's light weight and small size (so not keen on modding it) but I'm wondering if my older Rebel XS would do the job?
I also already have a Star Adventurer tracker that I bought for Milky Way photos using my Sigma 18-35.
So cost to duplicate this rig is going to vary depending on what you already have but what it shows me is that I can move on to DOS photos without breaking the bank.

Two things you probably already hhow: 1) Magic Lantern can replace your intervalometer/shutter release, and will allow 2) thirds of a stop increments in ISO. The reason the latter is useful: Canon’s inherent noise is in a ‘sawtooth’ pattern…160 ISO produces LESS noise than 100 ISO (320 < 200, 640 < 400, 1250 < 800..). I believe it’s specific to DIGIC.

Its stops becoming affordable... The trick is to build up this portable rig gradually, adding stuff as you go along.. this usually works alongside your learning and experience. After a few months you might decide AP is not for you and you haven't sunk too much money into this... Otherwise, like me, I'm on my 3rd scope in 18 months and I'm loving it.

that's a pretty decent image you got there. i do have to argue your "know how vs camera selection" argument. if you use a camera that introduces a lot of noise, even just from the sensor heating up, your photo stitching software is going to have a lot of problems picking up what are actually stars and what is just noise. so a good high iso camera is pretty important.

Trevor, I want to support any folks that have helped support you and your vids b/c although I'm experienced with astronomy (12" Dob for viewing only w/NO astrophotography experience), your vids have been so helpful in my transition to astrophotography. I'm now wanting to buy an EQ-6 Pro. Any recommendations on whom to purchase from?

This is the video I have been waiting for.
I have the canon 650 (rebel t4i) and am saving up for this type of set up.
I know that it is not just the camera or the lens bit also the after processing and am going to be on a steep learning curve.
I really love the video and will use it as a guide.

I`ve got mine on a Astromaster 130 EQ. Just waiting for clear skies. Was setting up with a svbony with a 2 x barlow looking at a star and an object moved across the screen. Took about 5 seconds to cross the screen which is way too slow for a satellite. Wish I had recorded it.

I am less than 2 months new to this astrophoto thing. I think that image is great. So far I have only done two sessions with a standard tripod and my two old Nikons, a D70 and D5100. I ripped out the IR cut filter from the D70 and left the D5100 stock, I still use it for other shooting. I was actually surprised how well they did here in central Florida. Currently I am waiting on a tracking mount. I have a feeling I'll be spending quite a bit of money in the coming years. The downside of all this to me is I really suck with photoshop, and the old version (CS2) I have is missing some of the features you use. Too many hobbies, so little time and money. Clear skys.

The old 600D.. I still use mine, it's my only dslr, had it since new, shutter count over 200,000(partly with timelapse).
I use Magic Lantern for timelapse and bulb functionality(an external intervalometer/controller has some advantages)

I'm intersting to start astrography (DSO) without spending thousands of $ to start...(already got a Celetron Nexstart 6se) getting a Canon Rebel T3i and modify it looks very interesting. BUT do you think the new low cost ZWO ASI585mc is a game changer? would you still recommand to use a cheap DSLR vs ZWO ASI585mc to start astrography at a low cost? Actually I wonder if the Canon T3 would still be more perfomant than the ZWO ASI585mc. thanks

A lot of people seem to be missing the point.
This is a very affordable camera. An affordable lens. And a star tracker. You can find affordable lenses. You don’t need a few whatever the hell in many locations, like Hawaii.
You don’t need the filter but it helps. You don’t need to modify your camera but it helps.
My friend has captured deep space photography with a A7iii and a start tracker.
The point is that you don’t NEED expensive Gucci gear to get into Astro shooting. But it definitely enhances your photos.

  • @josh1000f

I'd like to see what the results look like without the filter and camera sensor modification. I have a DSLR and a decent zoom lens and I'm considering getting a tracker, but I'd rather not take parts out of my camera if I can avoid doing so, but still get a better than average deep sky photo. If taking apart the camera (i.e. - buying a second DSLR) and buying the extra filter are a big part of getting images like the one in the video, then this is a much bigger investment than $200. I mean, how much difference does the added filter and the sensor change make?

And too grasp the idea That the light coming from those stars in Orion’s Belt have been traveling for millions of years til they reached earth and we all just witnessed a glimpse from the past! Very moving photograph and makes you think how much of a very real place that is and what it could be like! The only thing that can come close to my thoughts or express my imagination after looking at astronomy photographs like that are the Guardians Of The Galaxy movies!

You could always modify it yourself for free, (not to use the filter) find a dark site for free, use a cheap 50 mm vintage lens for almost free (30 bucks on eBay) and use a completely free image stacking software like sequator in order to compansate for the tracker. At least a beginner can get good results with targets like the Orion nebula and wide field milky way and etc. I think that's I the point he is trying to make in this video. Great video indeed.

Great video! I have a T3i from 2012 and really enjoy it. I did a ton of time exposures back in the days of EOS film cameras and the T3i flip out screen was such a benifit over fixed screens such as my studio's 5D. As far as I was concerned, givin a choice, I would always go for the t3i. Unless I needed to put on a professional appearence - then I would go 5D. If it was good enough for Phil Tippett to use for stop motion I figure it's good enough for me. ;-)

The nebula, in my opinion, are stars that simply blur when the spiral moves and we don't see clear points, but the brightness of Andromeda stars is very high, so we see their general glow. The same thing happens in the centers of all galaxies, at the birth of stars, where their concentration is off the scale

I maybe have a really dumb question. But When you use a telescope, the eyepiece does the zooming for you,When you remove that eyepiece and put a camera in, what does the zooming then? Since the camera doesn't have the lens attached on it. Greetings from the netherlands :)

Hi - quick rookie question. The image is mindblowing. When you present the final image in the video (before the zoom effect), has it been cropped or is this the original resolution/crop ratio directly from the sensor using the 135mm?

  • @montygiavelli8125

What was the air temperature and humidity when you took the images for this video ?"
I have used my nikon D750 with a Pro len with so-so results. I live in Alabama where the summer nights are in the seventies with humidity in the seventies or higher so I was getting a lot of noise. I've since gone with a cooled astro camera and an 8" Newtonian and the results are much better.
Your videos helped get me started in this crazy hobby, for that I am grateful.
Just wondering about the atmospheric conditions when you did this video.

I just bought a Pentax Super Takumar 300mm f4 lens on Ebay. I want to try that with stacking shots. I now it will be tough, but I do not have a Star Tracker yet. Waiting for clear skies, hard to find in WA state right now. Yeah, filter is expensive and so is the star tracker, but I will eventually get there. Also bought a Canon XSi on eBay last week for $121. Not sure if I should have the IR filter removed or not. Where can I have this done?

Dew heaters aren't cheap either, if you use a small hair dryer on the camera lens every 10- 15mins you can save a bit more cash. Also stacking photos with Deep sky stacker and then editing the final image is quite a job/skill in itself.

Hey mate, brought a cheap 600D today off a lady, planning to mod it instead of my Nikon D7200.. my question is do you recommend a gleam glass for the chip assembly or the clip in style filter? I was thinking of just making it full spectrum and seeing how that goes with nothing in front of the chip?
