    *Dear good gentlemen of TH-cam* you can get in contact with me, support me directly, and find all my socials/store/etc thru my Tazet profile:
    www.tazet.com/foureyes
    Let’s get into some Mustang stuff (assuming you watched the whole video)...
    The Mustang’s current engine was built for boost, but so far I’ve just been trying to squeeze as much NA power out of it as possible, which is kind of silly considering it has a compression ratio of < 10. So here’s the grandmaster plan for the Mustang:
    -- We’re going to install the Vortech supercharger mentioned in the video (the head unit’s good for 950 hp)
    -- While we install that, tune it, race it etc, we’ll build a high compression (12.5) NA motor on the side. When that engine is ready, we’ll do an engine swap and find out what a 3-valve can do when it has similar displacement and compression to a gen-3 coyote engine.
    -- Then we’ll refresh the low-compression engine and install as much of the turbo kit on the engine as possible while it’s out of the car, then we’ll drop in the turbo engine and full send.
    -- Somewhere betwixt all this I may try to install a sequential, if it’s not crazy expensive.
    All that being said, the next video will be about putting the Viper back together, hearing its new cam, tuning it, and racing a BMW V10 and an Audi V10. Should be a good one.

      Make triple sure you install those lifters facing the right way or you’ll be tearing it back apart. You may know that but never hurts to make sure. Prefix has good stuff. I buy Gen 3 Hemi stuff from them. Should sound pretty sick with the new cam!! That spalling on the cam lobe is a major issue with multiple brands so it’s not isolated to Mopar. I think oil is a major player and OE keeps recommending too light of a viscosity because they want gas mileage and to keep EPA happy. Prefix should get you straight on what viscosity to run. Joe Gibbs driven, Lucas oil, or Penn Grade is about the best 3 out there from personal experience having built several hundred engines and using them. Keep us posted! Love the car ❤

      Stock they are not, especially corners are a mess, as with most american cars with V8 or more.
      I dont know a V8 except from a old 69 Mustang GT, but i was driving a lot with V6 Diesel, regular 1,9 and 2l R4 diesels, as well a NA 1,4l and 2l as well turbo 1,6l and 2,4l petrol.
      The cars which were the most fun and "fastest" (in general, including corners and driving "agile") were the ones with small/light engines as well a light build in general with a good weight distribution as well low point of gravity.
      Neither light engines, nor a good weight distribution the average american muscle car give you, including the otherwise pretty iconic and nice Viper.
      My favorite cars i drive are either my old, turbocharged Renault Clio RS with all wheel drive, drives like a charme also normally, is somewhat "fuel efficient" and goes like hell if i want to. Has just 970kg dry weight and is one of the lightest possible cars with AWD. Sadly its a collectors item somewhat and its a "sunny day" and weekend car.
      Or, which is a nice cruiser with good handling, my Subaru Impreza from 2010. Has "just" the 2l Boxer Diesel as well its pretty "bad" (not the AWD i hoped for) visco clutch for the AWD. But with a 220 HP chiptuning, removed DPF, disabled EGR and a bigger turbo it also goes nice, just the 1500kg hinders it from being a sports car.

    The Viper is such a wildly distinct piece of engineering. For me it's the only American muscle car that truly, wholly supersedes the inbuilt tropes and expectations associated with it's class and manufacturer. In fact it transcends classification as a whole. It did not have a "style", nor a competitor, nor a target audience, per se. It reminds me a lot of the Lexus LFA in that regard, and a few others (that glorious V10!). It is, by design, the purest, most outlandish work of art that its creators could muster. We need more cars like this.

    About the camshaft failure. It seems to be a manufacturing problem. That piece was probably produced by casting and, even with inspection, it passed. It looks like internal porosity and/or inclusions (pocket of material) from the mold. I would recommend checking also the crankshaft and oil pump just to be sure

    • @HobieH3
      @HobieH3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For a casting porosity or delamination. If forged, some kind of inclusion maybe a soft area in the blank that didn't harden properly. If the hardening is via carborization, maybe one of the burners wasn't lit. Lucky you didn't get chips that damaged something else. Did it look like a fingerprint?

    • @alexbrewer4570
      @alexbrewer4570 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah, I agree. I'm a machinist with little bit of metallurgy knowledge. I'd guess there was a flaw in the annealing process, too hard on the outside, too soft on the inside. High pressure makes the spalling at the peak there.

    • @UD503J
      @UD503J 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As soon as I saw this pitting on the cam lobe, my brain said 'bad casting'. I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable as the other comments here, but I think it was just bad luck and nothing else. Honestly for as bad as it looked, I'm surprised there wasn't other damage passed down the rest of the valvetrain.

    As a retired aerospace engineer that did mostly mechanical engineering, the frosting on the lifter's roller and the damage to that cam load suggests three possible (either individual or a combination of): (1) lubrication; (2) metallurgical; and (3) dimensional. Looking at the spalling on the cam lobe and more specifically - where in the roller path (at the ends) suggests the load (side-to-side) profile and that roller's "crown drop" was not optimal. If the surface treatment (nitriding, carburization, ??) on that cam lobe was less thane designed, the surface would fatigue earlier. And a lubricant (tribology) generated fault could also be the cause or a contributing factor. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribology

    That was some VERY loud ticking. I would have been terrified driving it to the track and back. That cam lobe damage looks really weird, especially considering the roller is fine. Maybe it was just some fatigued metal, or it had some problems during the casting or hardening stage of fabrication. Huh... Well, i hope the tick/slap/rattle is gone after the new cam and heads.

    New subscriber from Tampa, I really like the authenticity of your videos! The viper has always been a car that has made me wonder, I thought about buying one a dozen times. I felt that Dodge could have put more into the platform yet with a massive V10 it was always a bit of an outsider. A cool car that wasn't oversaturated on the street. Yet the horror stories that I heard about the rear ends and inevitable crash really made me wonder??? You're one of the few that have taken that viper platform and really exposed some possibilities, which many owners don't dare explore when it comes to cracking the motor open. When I look at that camshaft the first thing I thought of was poor metal at the foundry, I swear that is a pot metal defect straight from the manufacturer. Is it a wear item yes, but you can obviously tell that has been well lubricated and those pits happened from the inside out in my opinion. The funny thing is the light damage to the lifter was likely from the cam pitting. Great work keep it up!

    1 quart of ATF in the oil and idle for 30 minutes, change the oil. what you heard was a stuck lifter, taking it racing ended the lifter and your camshaft. nice work! i knew what your problem was when i heard it for 2 seconds. this happens to most hydraulic lifter engines that sit for long periods without constant use.

    I worked on television production in Vancouver specifically Stargate and Battlestar Galactica, and there was a number of people there who worked on the Viper production as well
    A friend of mine who'd moved to the U.S who was a Mopar enthusiast Who dealt with the issues of a RT 440 enlarged to 525 cubic inches talked with one of the Viper guys. He said that some of the camshafts were prone to a weird kind of spalling because they didn't do an intermediate step in the Machining of shot peening it and then finishing it to its final Dimensions before surface hardening it again.

    @ 4:04 my bet would be that that damage on the cam lobe would have been from a previous engine failure, that had already been repaired. If it was the current issue the roller at the end of your lifter would have pitting on the left and right sides of it and a smooth track down the middle, which it does not. In fact the damage on the roller is exactly opposite, showing texture in the center, with smooth left and right sides. This excludes the pitting on the camshaft from being the culprit in this situation...

    • @garyscharg2306
      @garyscharg2306 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not a scientist or a mechanic, but I wonder if a weak valve spring could cause this issue? Appears he checked for a broken spring but one weaker spring might cause both the ticking and excessive wear on the cam lobe and roller lifter. I'm certain that with the new camshaft, new ported and polished cylinder heads, he should also go for brand new valves, springs, and lifters would solve the problem, until something else breaks.

    Not sure what that camshaft is made of, but it looks like, if that’s sintered powder metal, there was some crap in the powder mix or it didn’t fill perfectly during compaction and there’s a void in the metal that was exposed due to wear. The GKN facility I used to work in made the forged con rods in the early gen Vipers, not sure about their camshafts though.

    Without reading the other comments, I'd guess the cam might have had a combination of problems. It's location at the rear of the engine, might have meant the oil supply on that lobe was inadequate at high rpm. And if the valve stem were a bit too small or too large, or the valve spring was weaker than the others, the cam lobe might have been bashing into the roller at the wrong time. Valve float is a very tricky thing, after all, it doesn't take much to throw it off for one valve.
