The pioneer x is probably my favourite victorinox as it’s got everything I need especially the scissors and awl which I’ve used a lot. Great review as always. 👍🙂
I think it would be difficult for me to adjust to not having tweezers or a straight pin in the scales of my victorinox. So I did what any sensible person would do and I ordered a pioneer x.
For many years I I fought the temptation to buy an Alox knife because I've been so happy with the 91 mm knives I've owned. It's become apparent that I just gotta have one of these. Damn you, Victorinox.
Placing the reamer on the end of the tool where it belongs is what makes this tool so appealing to me. The other SAK models with the tool pivoting from the middle is just awkward and plain dangerous in my opinion and is the main reason that has prevented me from purchasing SAK. Now if they could provide a locking saw blade on other models they would move into serious tool category.
Been rocking the Electrician, but saw Urban EDC Supply had the Tiger Orange version. I was able to cop myself one, and I’m looking forward to add this to the collection 🙂
Really really good review probably one of the best victorinox revews on you tube. Compared it to other larger models also and thickness. Please do more uploads on these victorinox knives, thanks for the upload!!
Many thanks for your video! What I like is that it is a 3 layer but is very slim! It is like a 2 layer 91 mm. I still do not have a Pioneer X but it is on my buying list!
Thanks for the nice review. I just bought a second Pioneer X, which I will carry. The other will just be stashed away as part of the collection. The Pioneer X is a great one, and it could very well be my favorite, but I could also say that about the Farmer X. I have the Pioneer and the Farmer as well. For me, the Pioneer is a bit thinner than I am liking. For Suburban/Urban EDC, I would pretty much avoid any of of the knives that don't have scissors, because I do use them so much. While I think that I would pick the Pioneer X or Farmer X as my favorite if not in the woods, I could say that I could find some of the Cellidor knives that could qualify, but the only problem with those is that you can break scales, so I default to the Alox knives, even though you lose some options. Like you say, there are some tradeoffs you need to make at times and there is not one perfect knife. I think that the robustness of the Alox tools and scales often or nearly always make it the best choice.
Good review, because you showed me 3 things I didn't know: - alox scales are thinner (no need for metal underneath, should have guessed) - blades and springs are sturdier than the red scale knives - how the 'wire stripper' is supposed to work, at last! Always thought "that ain't no wirestripper". Probably not great but at least I can try it now. Edit: still don't get it. On the thicker many-feature knives eg Ranger; Swiss Champ, the two position flat head with this notch is the full frame width (all the tools away) from the main blade, so the notch would only help hold wire against the blade on thin few-tool models.
That technique is kind of fancy. I think the original way of doing it was just to use a blade (the small one on most Victorinox knives would be handiest but the large blade works fine too) to score the plastic sheathing of the wire and then us the notch to help pull the sheathing from the wire. The notch saves you from cutting the wire strands which could often happen if, for example, you use a blade to pull the sheathing off. I used to use just a plain blade to strip wire for decades until I finally broke down and bought actual wire stripper :-)
Another advantage to the alox as opposed to the celidor is that the liners are nickel silver, which is stronger than the aluminium liners on celidor models; this means they can withstand more torque and are more corrosion resistant.
I love my Alox Pioneer. I was looking at both the Pioneer and the Cadet, but I ended up going with the Pioneer because it is a little beefier. I’m not really a fan of the plastic scales on the normal Victorinox tools, but the Alox versions look super classy. I’m glad that you got your scissors. 😄
CircuitsAndStrings thanks for recommending this one. I was just watching Johnny Juke’s video. That knife pouch he has with a clip would be awesome with this knife I think. Really like this knife. Overall it’s just stronger. And those scissors, maaaaaaaaan they are nice.
It’s a wonderful multitool in its own right, but it also makes a nice companion tool along with Leatherman Wave/Charge or Rebar. It has a nice awl that the Wave/Charge lacks, and a very good scissors that the Rebar doesn’t have. It has a non-locking knife that is also workable as your back-up knife. Can-opener and bottle-cap-lifter is more accessible than the combination in the Leatherman tools, and renders them redundant, if you ever need it. I happened to choose a Farmer X over Pioneer X because of the wood saw, and I didn’t intended it as a companion to Leatherman tools, but it doesn’t make a terrible burden when I consider it as one.
This will probably be the next SAK I get for the same reasons you mentioned. I want a larger set of scissors without all the layers of tools. Preferably I'd like a 91mm SAK with only a knife and scissors. Maybe one day victorinox will come out with one. Great review!
You know what, I thought the same thing. The only exception is I wish they had a two layer knife that had knife, scissors, and a package opener. That would be fantastic.
I have the pioneer alox without the scissors but thinking I might pick up the "x". I keep an sd classic in walnut on my keychain for those little tasks. But for opening boxes, cutting rope, etc., the pioneer's knife is excellent. I have over a hundred folders and a few fixed and slipjoints, but the pioneer alox gets the most use. Keep it sharp and it gets the job done, period.
I think the soft blade steel of Victorinox is a widespread misconception. It is still steel. I had (and still do) a Spartan for more than 15 years. It was my only pocket knife and got a lot of use. I wasn’t into SAKs back then and took it for granted. Never maintained it or sharpened it and it was always in good shape. The only time I managed to dull the main blade was when I cut open a 5 liter beer keg to see how it works. And it was still useable after that, just not razor sharp. Naturally it was very easy to sharpen afterwards. I also prefer it for food stuff over harder steels as being so shiny makes it look more sterile clean.
I agree about it being an easy to clean knife. They are really easy to sterilize as well. However, there is no doubt that they are made from a softer stainless steel. That is not necessarily a bad thing though. As you mentioned, they are really easy to sharpen. I love Victorinox knives because their so useful. My SAK blades are backups for me as well, so it makes little difference to me what their steel composition is.
It was this video that convinced me to get the Pioneer X Alox. The scissors were the deciding factor. Even if I never use the knife blade itself, just having the large scissors is a huge help. It may also be easier to justify carrying it in my (outside USA) country as opposed to a dedicated pocket knife like the CRKT Squid or the Kershaw Shuffle, among others. Despite wanting those as my first pocket knives, there is always the risk of losing them. And they do not come cheap. EDIT: spelling

Great tool , the Pioneer is the equivelent of the issued “Soldier “ knife ( in service from 1963 -2007-8 ) .The main screwdriver is actually speced for light prying . The “stripper “ was basically intended for stranded lamp cord . Another good one is the “ Farmer “ , has a saw , good for outdoor stuff !
Another good Cellidor scales option with scissors is the "Climber" model at only 3 layers. I find myself never pocket carrying a SAK over 3 layers. Anything over 3 layers has dedicated spaces. Can't go wrong with a Pioneer X in pocket & Leatherman Charge + on the belt. (Scissors are nothing special on any full size Leatherman)
With alox SAKs the scales are slimmer so a 3 layer alox like the Pioneer X at 14.9mm thick is actually only a hair thicker than the Spartan at 14.5mm. There is a 4 layer alox - the Farmer X - with both scissors and saw and at 17mm which is the same thickness as the Super Tinker, the 3 layer celidor model with scissors but without saw.
the farmer x is probably a better knife...but its another layer... so the best knives are 2 or 3 layers for someone who permanently carries one in pocket. and the real choice boils down to do i want a pair of scissors or a saw. scissors wins for me...when i usually need a saw, i tend to have a saw...and small stuff i can break, only thing is if i need to saw plastic piping... but when i need to cut piping its either in a house or on my car and i normally have a saw available so the pioneer x is probably the most useful knife there is that is pocket friendly 24 x 7 ...365...i love this knife and am going to buy it . farmer x is just a bit too thick.

I’m adding a combo tool to the knife that is being built for me right now. For similar reasons. Though mine is being setup to compliment my Surge, so a saw was not a priority for me.
Oh yeah, for sure. It’s a little pricey because I’m adding some custom titanium scales to it. Should be ready in a few days, but shipping will take a bit.
I bought mine right after my last comment a month ago. The tools are great, but I don't care much for the alox scales.. They're noticeably more slippery than the celador scales..In fairness, the knife feels a bit more secure in my hand now than it did a month ago. Maybe I'm just wearing off whatever coating Victorinox might be putting on it. As of this moment, I still prefer my Super Tinker.

I like to use the can opener for anything but can opening, it's a great prying tool so I'm happy it's a little bit thicker on the alox. Took me a while to decide against the Forester X. But having the Huntsman for hikes and moving the folding saw from the basement into the car really helped. Classic alox word for urban EDC, it just on the keychain, ready to cut and file. I wish they made an alox mini champ with more kid-friendly tools. Tiny screwdrivers for electronics, something to etch dirty things into wood, that kind of stuff. ;-)
@@Finance-Food-and-Freetime I guess the mini champ does that. With half of the tools removed, it would probably be excellent. That orange peeler is an excellent spear tip for fishing.

The Leatherman Surge at 1:08 is a Silver/Black Oxide combination. Leatherman makes a couple of models with that color scheme. I actually carry a different one now. In my playlists you will find one titled Leatherman Super Surge. That video series shows all of the modifications that I did to my Surge one by one. When it comes to Leatherman vs Victorinox, I am one of those rare people that like both brands very much. I generally like to use a Victorinox knife as a complimentary knife to my regular EDC, my Leatherman Super Surge.
@@txtoolcribi really like the look of this I'm going to take a look thanks again buddy and yea your like me Leatherman and victorinox love both of them thanks again pal 👍
Love the tools. Hate the scales. They'r entirely too slippery compared to the celador scales on the SAK's I have. In over 40 years, it's the only mistake I've made buying a Victorinox. It is pretty, which counts for something, I suppose.
The Pioneer X is a phenomenal alox model. I don't understand what took Victorinox so long to come up with it, since they have the best scissors on the market. I'd be very interested in an alox model with the scissors as well as the wood saw (which would be equivalent to the 91mm Huntsman, except for the tooth pick and tweezers).
Gave away 2 farmers and recently picked up this one. Love it! BTW I'm uploading a Top 5 MT video and you are mentioned. I'll send the link here when its completed.
The Wave+ does everything this SAK does, but this SAK doesn't do everything the Wave+ does. If you don't need a saw, file, etc. then this SAK is much more compact and lighter.
My wife might stab me if I buy another of these....I don't think many ladies understand the pleasure that small, useful, beautifully made tools and knives give us. Maybe if I tell her she's small , useful and beautifully made?
E S It’s a much smaller knife than this, but I wish the victorinox midnight manager had a usb rechargeable light (those coin cells in the current version really kill it), along with that nicely integrated pen. For a lot of us, pens and lights are our most frequently used tools. So having them right on the keychain is a total win.

It's certainly one of my favorites.
The Farmer Alox X might fit the bill for you.
I know they're totally different SAK but I'm indecisive between the Pioneer X and the Deluxe Tickner, which would you recommend?
Look at Felix Imler’s videos and he shows how to sharpen the wire stripper notch into one that really works. Takes all of 10 minutes to do.
I think I actually made some comments on that video. It was a good idea he had.
waiting for a fieldmaster in or evo 18 in alox
Fieldmaster would be nice in Alox.
Hey brother, been a min..Great review as always! How your holidays were great and able to spend it with family.
It has, been working a job site in Florida the last few weeks. Just recently got back. Holidays were great.
But do the drivers work on phillipshead screws?
Yes, but you will only be engaging "half" of the screw head (if that makes sense)
Hey Ben, not that you have every single multitool (seems like you do lol) but would you consider the Victorinox Outrider for possible review?
I will try to acquire both of them
TX Tool Crib The Boker Plus Tech-Tool City 7 might be something to take a look at.
Gave away 2 farmers and recently picked up this one. Love it! BTW I'm uploading a Top 5 MT video and you are mentioned. I'll send the link here when its completed.
Farmer is also a very good knife, I just prefer the scissors in the Pioneer X a bit more. Thank you by the way. Really appreciate you watching.

Hey. Can you check out the new victorinox farmer x. And please do a review. Thanks.
Lot of people have mentioned it, I’ll get one soon.
Would this work as a companion knife for a wave plus
The Wave+ does everything this SAK does, but this SAK doesn't do everything the Wave+ does. If you don't need a saw, file, etc. then this SAK is much more compact and lighter.
Noted
It's great as a companion for the Rebar or even Bond, both of which don't have scissors.
TOP !
Can you do a review of the new Farmer X Alox?
Let me get one, it will definitely be on the list.
This is what leatherman T series should be competing with. I don't know what they are thinking pricing their T series more than full size plier tools.
I would choose this any day over the T series.
@@txtoolcrib I already have this haha. One of the best set in my collection. Unfortunately PS4 slips in my pockets more naturally.
Cool
Any Victorinox with scissors is Xellent.
My wife might stab me if I buy another of these....I don't think many ladies understand the pleasure that small, useful, beautifully made tools and knives give us. Maybe if I tell her she's small , useful and beautifully made?
There’s no Phillips driver at all??
The small flathead on the can opener can deal adequately with most Phillips screws
If it had a pen it would be perfect for me
E S It’s a much smaller knife than this, but I wish the victorinox midnight manager had a usb rechargeable light (those coin cells in the current version really kill it), along with that nicely integrated pen. For a lot of us, pens and lights are our most frequently used tools. So having them right on the keychain is a total win.
If you used that screwdriver in what you called in case you need more torque would destroy the knife
I've used that screwdriver in high torque applications . In both regular and ALOX. You'd be surprised at what these little tanks can handle .
