  • The Victorinox Cadet is an all time classic in the EDC world. There are tons of videos about it out there already, but just for the love of it, here is my own review of what might be the best EDC knife of all times.

    Nice review of a very classy knife. Have several of these in various colors that I’ve collected over the years. Recently, I acquired a silver one that has an updated file. Think the newer file has been around three or four years. File is more aggressive I think than the older ones. As has been discussed, adding scissors to the cadet would be a welcome edition. Maybe the perfect edc?

    A few months ago I was looking for cheap alox swiss army knives and I saw the cadet which was the cheapest full sized knife and it was 44 dollars on Amazon, I turned it down for that reason but I found your video and decided to give it another look and to my surprise it's dropped 14 dollars! So for only 30 bucks I think it's a phenomenal knife. Thanks man!

    Everybody is hyped on Cadet until they manage to get Bantam Alox:
    1. Size. Almost twice slimmer than Cadet, every other dimension is the same. And no keyring (in the standard edition) to scratch your shirt pockets.
    2. Everything. Unless you *really* need that nail file (which is wiser to have on a 58mm keychain model like Classic SD, SwissLite or Rambler anyway, alongside slim scissors) and the keyring (same), Bantam Alox gets you covered: just a blade and a combo tool that can act as both can and bottle opener, as well as a screwdriver and wire stripper (also, folks, read Victorinox instructions on how to properly do wire stripping before commenting it doesn't work here).
    And if you wanna get serious, just get a Pioneer (descendant of the standard soldier's knife) or Spartan (descendant of the standard officer's knife). They are compact enough as well, trust me.

    As with your Sinn, I admire the loyalty to your Cadet. In EDC, I don't think change for the sake of change makes sense. I have a Pioneer, but it's sort of a toss up for me with the Cadet. Like you, after my GF borrowed the knife to open a box, one suddenly appeared at our door. It's the Alox!

      Thats a sign that you picked the right girl! ;)
      To be honest, its a toss up for me as well between the Cadet and the Pioneer. A couple of years ago I would have picked the Pioneer over the Cadet any day. That's why I went for the custom Pioneer X by Rober J. Lessard back in 2018. Over the years though I have come to appreciate the slimer profile and the slight weight advantage of the Cadet more and more.
      Both are outstanding knives though and I carry them on a regular basis.

    I don’t use SAKs a lot, but they have their place and I’ve found the Cadet to be the best balance between size and what I expect a tool in that category to do for me.
    I’ve done week long hikes sleeping in self-service mountain cabins with the cadet as my only blade and multitool without issues, so it certainly punches above its weight.
    I wasn’t too impressed with the tool selection at first glance, but after experiencing how useful a file can be, and also how the tip of the file can serve as a rudimentary Philips driver in a pinch, I’ve come to view it as a very capable alternative to having nothing at all. And it’s hardly more noticeable.

    I am always of two minds about the alox SAK-s. The Cadet, for example, is really like the Sportsman in terms of the main tools (blade, nail file , can opener, cap lifter) but is lacking the toothpick, tweezers, corkscrew and awl. That's a lot of useful functionality to give up for a mere 6 grams reduction in weight ! The only reason I can think of to favour the Cadet over the Sportsman is that it looks classier. The one alox model I have is the Swiss Army 1 which is just the large blade in an alox shell. Paired with a Classic SD on my keychain (which provides the tweezers, toothpick, scissors, nail file, small screwdriver and small blade) the Swiss Army 1 makes an elegant ultralight gentleman's urban carry for those instances where you likely will not be opening a corked bottle of wine, a can needing an opener or capped bottle of beer/pop.

    • @Eminem619100
      @Eminem619100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I chose the cadet alox instead of the sportsman, because it is much thinner. The cadet alox is 8mm thick and the sportsman is 15mm thick. So the cadet alox feels better in my pocket than a more bulkier one, like the sportsman.
