DUBROVNIK, CROATIA was a GHOST TOWN!

  • They warned us that there would be no one in Dubrovnik, and they weren’t lying!
    We took a car service from Split to Dubrovnik, Croatia. The drive down the coast leads you through the city of Neum in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 1:28
    We stopped in Neum to take some pictures and buy some souvenirs. Our driver showed us a bridge that is being built by the Croatians so that the traffic toward Dubrovnik can be redirected over the island just off the coast, in order to avoid having to drive through Neum. 2:18
    Once we got to Dubrovnik, we were greeted by the smallest apartment of our entire trip! However, the location was just outside of Dubrovnik’s old town, and as such was perfectly situated! 4:07
    We started to explore the old town of Dubrovnik by looking for a place to eat. We were welcomed by a nice man outside of his restaurant, and then continued onward to a restaurant in the first main plaza. Coming from NYC, it is hard to surprise me and Paige with prices, but a $22 veggie burger will do the trick! 5:21
    We walked to the street in the south (up a very steep incline) which runs the southern perimeter of the city. We found a bench and began to realize exactly how empty the old city was. As we began to look at other travel vlogs, we could see how difficult it normally is to walk around Dubrovnik because of the number of tourists visiting. 8:37
    At this point, Paige was not feeling well and returned to the apartment for a rest. I continued my exploration to the westernmost area of the city and explored along the coast. 10:23
    I continued my exploration outside of Dubrovnik’s old city and headed up a hill to watch the sunset. 11:33
    The last order of business for the day was to find something to eat, that I could afford. :-). I found a restaurant outside of the old town called Dubravka 1836, which was great! A ten dollar pizza was just what the doctor ordered! 12:56
    Next we do a much more in depth exploration of the old town of Dubrovnik, don’t forget to turn on notifications to see that!
    This is part nineteen in a series that started with flying from London, so if you missed part one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, or eighteen, be sure to check them out! Shockingly few people there! Never felt unsafe, but it felt very weird after having seen the crowds at Dubrovnik on so many other travel vlogs!

    You missed the entrance to the aquarium. It's on the other side. And yes you can find cheaper food outside of the old town

    • @MrNonrev
      @MrNonrev  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, I think we found it. And yes, the food was maybe even better outside the old city! :-)

    I think it's a bit shocking also that you think it's shocking that there are so few people in Dubrovnik. Have you heard of 'corona'?

    • @MrNonrev
      @MrNonrev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Asterix-- TH-cam likes to limit the inclusion of "Covid" and "Corona" in videos. If you paid attention a bit earlier, I said people had warned us that it would be empty. My shock was in exactly "how" empty it was. Plitvice, even was still crowded, even during the pandemic. If you look at Dubrovnik videos in regular times, it is inundated with people. You'd have to admit this is incredibly empty, for any city, and not just Dubrovnik. No, the presence of Corona is NOT a surprise to me.

    The prices are expensive on the main strip . Outside walls not so bad

    • @MrNonrev
      @MrNonrev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally, totally totally agree! And the food was great outside the walls! I have to say the only thing inside the city is the location. But I absolutely LOVED Dubrovnik! It is worth the hype. It's so incredibly charming and I will definitely go back!

    Nice video, you're funny and entertaining, but the name of the country is Bosnia AND Herzegovina, which means that there are two different parts that make one country and you were in Herzegovina part. Mostar is also in Herzegovina, so actually you were not in Bosnia but in Herzegovina and you have a souvenir from Herzegovina. It's a common mistake and most of the people totally ignore the second part of the country's name which represent half of the country. I'm from Croatia, but I'm just saying... Otherwise, nice video, you got my like and sub.

    • @MrNonrev
      @MrNonrev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Thanks for the specifics! Truthfully, I was never in Mostar either, sadly. I will need to go back to the region for Mostar, Sarajevo, and Kotor in Montenegro, for sure. Those are the three most notably absent from this itinerary! Thank you for your kind words!

    If the prices are too much for you imagine how the average Croatian would react to them :D and Akvarij does mean Aquarium. One more thing as well, the ethnic composition of Neum is 98% Croatian.

    • @MrNonrev
      @MrNonrev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome! So I was not quite off on aquarium? Maybe it was closed at the time, but I could not locate it. I also am aware that the prices for the restaurant, Cele, right in the middle of the main plaza are incredibly inflated! Paige and I ended up eating at the restaurant Dubravka 1836 a couple more times, because the price was decent and the food was great!

      That is true...a lot of Croats live in Neum because they wanted to open restaurants where they could legally serve Prstaci which due to overharvesting in the past is illegal everywhere except Bosnia. When passing thru Neum on our way to Dubrovnik, we purposely stopped somewhere specifically to eat prstaci with buzara sauce and it was very affordable where we went and absolutely delicious!

      @@MrNonrev You weren't off at all. Akvarij literally means aquarium! It's being renovated currently and it will open again in Spring 2021.

    • @MrNonrev
      @MrNonrev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MizTheDonGargon We were limited. TH-cam does limit what you can say on the video, but because of the virus, we were limited to 1 hour in Bosnia, without needing to take another test to get back into Croatia, so we rushed for souvenirs and some pictures, and had to get back in the car. B and H didn't put any limits on us, but Croatia did if we wanted to return to the country.

      Actually no--my math is correct. Even today 136 Kuna Is $21.53. That's closer to $22 than it is $16.

    Interesting comments about my "Darling Town" Dubrovnik which I've visited 20 times. But Please ... Why the stupid and irritating "Muzak" as soon as You stop commenting? I want to hear the sounds of the City - instead of this soul less noice pumping out.

      Thanks for your comment! I can't win either way, some people LOVE the music and say it's the best part, for you it is different. I am sorry you didn't like it.

    Cele is the most expensive cafe/restaurant in Dubrovnik, and most overrated. Theres a bunch of waaaay more cheap and better places.

    • @MrNonrev
      @MrNonrev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I LOVE that you wrote this. Honestly, the ONLY thing about Cele is the location. Everything else was mediocre. Even the restaurant at the top of the mountain was great! :-)
