McLaren 750S review - on track and road in Woking’s new headliner

  • The McLaren 750S is an evolution of the already blisteringly quick, superbly lightweight and gloriously pure 720S, and while not much would seem to have changed in the styling department, under the skin it’s a different matter.
The 750S is a lighter, more powerful car than the machine it replaces, as well as having a more engaging, playful character and even more straight-line performance. There are loads of detail-changes that add up to an even more exciting yet usable supercar.
That’s the official line, at least, but to see for ourselves, we’ve been to Portugal, to drive the 750S on track at the historical Estoril circuit and then on the surrounding roads.
Does this 740bhp senior McLaren supercar have what it takes to stand up to the new Ferrari 296 GTB? Join deputy road test editor Richard Lane has he straps in and finds out.

It definitely sounds a bit like that in this review, maybe has to do with his sound set up,other reviews I've seen this car sounds pretty dam good, amittingly not as good as the lambo v10,but the overall package this car offers is is very enticing, the sensational steering feel ,suspension ,visibility from the cabin which other super cars often lack😊@@gazzabrownhigh8891

The car makes you have a permanent smile on your face. The car has once again developed enormously. Just the wider speed range, the steering and the chassis compared to the 720S. Gigantic.

My brand new GT3 has had 3 curious rattles, the SF90 I drove on track had rattles, the 296 GTS I have on order rattled during the 3 hours I had with the demo car. Cars fucking rattle these days. It’s annoying but it also doesn’t seems to be something that even this level of car can escape.

Not too dissimilar to what Ferrari did with the 488 to the f8. Except, the 488 was never the bench mark in terms of performance, but the 720s was, so makes sense that they haven't messed with it too much.

I am sure it is very fast and capable on track, and rides well on the road, but I could not imagine paying that sort of money that is just so bland inside, and sounds so awful. Just seems short of soul and passion. A scalpel, a tool.

    • @ludda42

A V12 would add weight and disrupt the balance of the car. No thanks

    • @corystansbury
      @corystansbury 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ludda42 An M838T weighs 439 pounds and that likely doesn't include the intercoolers, piping, etc. (admittedly, those don't weigh a lot). A McLaren F1 engine was 584 lbs at 6 liters and the T50's engine is 392 lbs at 4 liters. Given that a DCT is typically a hundred or more pounds heavier than a similar manual, I don't see why the balance would necessarily shift much at all.
And we might look at both the T50 and McLaren F1 engine and declare they're unobtanium-level products, but I don't think either are so completely in the stratosphere, technology-wise, to not have a more production friendly design come close. An F1 engine was very similar to two BMW M3, S50 engines and the T50 engine looks an awful lot like modern sport-bike engines. So, if the investment money was there, I don't see any reason why a 5 liter V12 with manual couldn't come in at or below the current powertrain weight with very strong performance (likely not as fast, but that wasn't the point).

  • @lknanml

Feels like a step backwards. Like the 750 came out then it was refined into the 720 and perfected with the 765.
The center console looks HORRIBLY cheap now. Looks like a PDA from the 90s now. The 3 buttons are about as exciting as elevator buttons now. The older multi function buttons and knobs looked WAY better. Moved to the pods on the dash is fine. That I do like but the center screen also lost the buttons at the bottom of it that gave it a techy look. Like I said. Now you have elevator buttons next to a 90s PDA.
The 720 and 765 rear ends are WAY better looking and I mean WAY... 30% changes? 30% more boring.... Swing and a miss McLaren.

I think they will very slowly evolve like the 911's. I am tired of seeing the same basic aesthetic too, but I think the McLaren aficionados will appreciate the minor improvements/details and perceive them as being "fresh" with advancement of certain aspects. Probably talking out my arse but they have hit a profitable and popular formula so why mess with it? Because the cars look too similar and it would be great to bring another design into the world in the same vein if development costs aren't prohibitive.
