@@meade916what about the efficiency at 1ohm doesn't that seem a bit low for a 1000-1500w amp in today's world? I thought the standard for "good" budget amps were mid 70's on the low end

Every time I watch amp videos I'm forever impressed that the jl hd1200. 1 (you've reviewed it) can do 1200wrms at all ohms at half the footprint and more of amps that can't do half that. Might be over 1$ per watt but ill pay it all day for how good the amp looks and bumps and stays tiny.

I was a professional installer for about 25 years. As such, I have always had access to, and used, big brand top flight amplifiers - Rockford, JL, Zapco, etc. I tend to scoff at these new brands, and I expect it is a tough deal for people to try to sort through what is crap, what is great, and what falls in between. Kudos that you review a lot of them.
For no reason that I can explain, the MM line from D4S has caught my attention. Maybe it's the color palette reminding me of Linear Power from back in the day. I am happy to see that they appear to be a decent product. I might just have to pick a few up to try out. Nice work.

Hey there Mr. Williston - from your experience and testing, I would like to ask your opinion about what amp to use to power 2 - 15" power series Rockford subs. These are the classic models, from 1999, and they are dual voice coils also. I was using two Memphis 1100D amps, one on each sub, but due to a shop doing a horrible amp wiring install, I tossed out the amps thinking they were blown. Sad story and painful to still think about. But, I am curious to know if you think one larger amp or two smaller amps would work best. I am especially worried about amp draw from amps) on my electrical system and would like to get the maximum output from the subs. I am just curious about your many years of knowledge and experience, and your personal perspective. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I will most likely run a sealed box since I don't have many quality installers where I am, that I trust, building a proper ported enclosure. Thanks & Cheers

Would you test an old school discontinued Kenwood amp if I sent it to you? This was the first name brand amp I ever purchased and has served me well in my daily driver for 20 years. The only reason I pulled it out of service is to replace it with a newer amp with twice the power.
The amp in question is a KAC-7201. I have been scouring the internet for years looking for a dyno test on this old amp.

Everything I've bought for my car is based on your reviews!
I bought a sundown sam500.1d amp. And a kicker 10" q class, I set it to 1ohm and my sundown amp started clipping, I put the test light to the positive at the amp and when the bass hit it drops to low 12v... I'm upgrading to 4g ofc Wires to see if it will help the amp from clipping..
I'm interested in this blue monoblock but I don't understand when you said the efficiency is no too good?
    I see it gets 1000@2ohm
But I just discovered how hard a system can hit @1ohm.
And I will like to keep it that way.
You think this amp will do better than the sundown sam500d.1 ,or I should get the CT 1000.1d ?. I'm looking for a small rectangular shape 1ohm stable at least 700rms

i have a general question about car stereo amplifiers . i have read in the instructions that came with different amplifiers i have had and they usually say to try and keep the ground cable to no more than three feet, and in amp wiring kits i have bought as well as ones i saw on ebay it usually says the grounding cable is three feet long . what is the reason for that , can the amplifier actually be damage if the ground cable is too long, or does it just affect the sound quality , or what ? i have had always grounded my amplifiers directly to the battery and have never had a problem, as far as an amplifier failing i mean. although i have never used the same amplifier for more than about two years. i always thought it would be better to ground them to the battery is why i did it . can anyone explain the reason that they recommend keeping the ground cable so short even though the power/positive cables that come with the kits are often over fifteen feet long

  • @xaytana
    @xaytana 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm curious if there's any design benefit of those angled-screw terminals. If you're using just twisted strands without a ferrule, the downwards clamping pressure of a screw can make the strand packing go wonky, especially if you don't have good fitment or are dropping down a size of cable. But with the angled screws, rather than just downwards force, you're also applying forward force, and with a smaller overall clamping area, due to the edge of the screw rather than the flat of a screw. This probably also helps secure the cable into its forward-most position, and probably helps prevent pull-out. Not to mention ease of access to the screw. Honestly, this might be a feature I want to see more often than not on future equipment.
Also, when it comes to RCA pigtails, I'm a bit surprised some form of mini-RCA never popped up. The problem with TS/TRS/TRRS is that the tips and rings rub the ground, whereas RCA always has the shielding separate from the source pin via the barrel. I guess barrel jack power connectors could be borrowed as an alternative, especially with how small they get, but they're just too uncommon in comparison to RCA jacks. Though one thing I do want to see, although it's a bit pricier, is optical, it'd just open up more routing opportunities and bundles sources better; I'm genuinely surprised optical is an optional standard everywhere but car audio, I've even had laptops with a combo optical-TRS jack. People don't like pigtails because the RCA connectors add so much bulk to the middle of a cable run, y'know where that portion of the cable is already being tucked under other things like panels, and short pigtails are generally a pain in the ass, pigtails will enerally never have a good solution unless you have a decent run of copper between a source and in-line RCA block but then you're adding an unsightly wart somewhere in the chain where there typically isn't room for one; the alternative to this is of course pinning those 4pin connectors yourself, but I don't think most people in this hobby would understand where to go for these parts.
Full range amps are also useful if you have a lot of high-power drivers in one door, where relevant two and four channel options become drastically less abundant. Just look at JP's current build, he basically has one of his largest amps per door. 1KHz rating is entirely reasonable for these, full-ranges aren't primarily meant for sub amps, and sub amps are already more abundant at these power ratings.

What's wrong with full range mono ? I run the majority of my systems "old school" 1 amp on L & R. Most HU stereo separation is superior to a lot of amplifiers. It also allows you to gain match the L & R signal. Look at how many Dyno runs one channel puts out a bit more power than the other on 2ch amps.

Just received (and installed) a D4S JP13 and it's absolutely an EXCELLENT amp. Only two issues I have are that their customer service is, apparently, non-existent (I figured out the issue, anyway) AND the voltage/temp meter on the (robust) remote bass control could use with a dimmer - hahaha.. lights up the whole car (I'll figure it out).
But Down4Sound are the amps to buy! Great products!!!

The CS issue was my fault - sent to the sales address by mistake. Glad I did too because the problem was my fault - drove a mounting screw right through the remote wire - doh!

The 1500kfb is a great option if you're running a 3 way active front stage and want mono midbass. The mm1000 can't be used unless you're okay with crossing at 250, which I was not. There honestly isn't a lot of options for things like that without spending way more money.

I never use the built-in crossovers in amps. I'm a firm believer in using ONE quality crossover unit that splits off to all my amps, OR using the crossover option in the deck if it has one. A lot of the newer,
high-quality, decks have quite a nice crossover option built-in to them.
I don't like having a bunch of random crossovers that come built-in to my amps mangling the signal phase.
The closer the drivers are all time-aligned, without having to go into the deck and manually do it, the better I like it.

Easy....technology has came that far. Power in the 90s was industry standard at $1 per watt. Now it's closer to $0.20 (or even less depending on form factor) per watt. Also consider in the 90s how few companies made amps vs now. When there is a full field of options vs 5 or 6 reputable back then competition drives the prices down.
