Poor neighbourhoods, including slums, exist in Kolkata. However, going to Kolkata and visiting mostly those areas is extremely odd. The visit is missing out on the various glorious aspects of Kolkata, including the richness of its art, literature, music, sports, cuisine, and architecture. It is the cultural capital of India. This video is similar to what would be the case if someone went to New York and visited only the slum-like places.
I completely agree with you. This video made me think about the mindset of these so called explorers as they only show whatever little they know. Only if he knew Kolkata the way we know it, who have been living here and know it’s actual heritage.
Have you noticed the title of this video??? it's so disrespectful... he's intentionally going to market places crazy crowded areas and insulting our city
I do not understand the reason for anyone to go there .. Go to Jim Corbett National park, Leh, Ladakh, Shimla Enfield Bullet ride, Go to North East, Surdarbans in Bengal, Taj, then head to Ajanta Ellora Caves, go Hampi, Badami Caves, on way to Goa, Bandipur Forests trek to Ooty, Kerala a lot, Tamil Nadu Temple sculptures. If you in India, it is all about Sculptures, Chep Skilling in Shimla, Gir Lions, Tigers etc
It's because to understand and experience how different life is here in India when it comes to grassroots compared to where a lot of white people come from. Your suggestions are definitely good ones but one can experience India at the grass-root levels and not just from a privileged point of view, I travelled exactly like this and still do as 27 year old to understand and feel my country better!
That's pretty high expectations from a tourist. Even the locals don't want to live in that country and u expect him to cherry pick few destinations? The bar is too low
I from Russia 🇷🇺 ,I went to India recently It was different experience going through the chaotic streets, honkings every where, too crowded and a lot of traffic.. I was overwhelmed by the surroundings, and the foods in India were so delicious but little bit spicy.. Overall It was a amazing experience, no country can give a complete experience like India 🇮🇳..
Can't wait for this one! I've been inspired by your travels for years and have used it as motivation to travel the world soon, and this new insight on India will surely help me book a trip there soon as well!
@FactGuy-74 there are some really beautiful sites to see, especially in the south or places where there is low population density. If you are visiting overcrowded slummy part of a major city, that's what you get. But all this chaos makes for an engaging video lol. Won't recommend solo females to come here though
As much as I like Drew, most foreign vloggers always just portray the slums and the poor side of India like literally always lol. They've got to show all the nasty stuff as much as possible when there's literally so much good stuff out there.
forget poverty, because india is poor no doubt about it But the question indians should be asking is, why these foreign vloggers just visit Old delhi/mumbai? why the most populated cities? what do they expect? Populated means More people Why don't they visit natural and scenic places like Kerala, Ladakh, J&K, Himachal pradesh, or North East? They will only get concrete in Delhi/Mumbai
@@OdinUpsilon No its literally not. Check out kolkata from google maps. Majority is middle class areas. The area he went is just a tiny portion. And although i agree that they government has failed to upgrade that area, i always see foreign vloggers go to that tiny piece of land. Always. Really annoying. I mean people do not go to USA schools to experience gun shooting all the time. They go the natural parks, the hikes, the treks etc.
I am from Kolkata. This is partial portrayal City has lot of heritage. It is place of birth of Rabindra Nath Tagore, Amartya Sen. He has visited old parts of Kolkata. He should have visited New Town , software centre.
I am in India as of this comment on a 7-day trip to Delhi. This is my second time in India and I am hungry for more. My first trip back in 2016 was to Mumbai where I spent most of my time in Powai. I was fascinated by the culture, the sights, the nature, and the contrast between old and new parts of the city as well as its rich, middle class, and slum areas. My best memory from the trip was one hell of a hike in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which is a recommendation I cannot make enough if you ever find yourself in Mumbai, especially the view from the top, which is surreal to say the least! I just concluded a full day in Agra yesterday and looked at a few monuments and local artisan workshops which was very rich and which I also recommend to anyone coming to Agra in addition to visiting the Taj Mahal, of course. My discovery of the massive land of India is still in its infancy and I look forward to the next trip! The one thing I still cannot get used to is the aggressive driving, be it here in Gurgaon (where I'm staying), in Agra yesterday, or in Powai a few years back! The excessive use of horns becomes background noise that you get used to and filter out eventually.

Stop visiting just crowded cities and crying over the fact that there are lot of people, you get what you went for, you went for a crowded city and you got crowd in return Drew needs to grow up as a vlogger, it's a true shame not only to vlogging but other international vloggers not teaching him how to vlog. As a vlogger he has to be honest enough to show both side, if he is visit slum, he will get slum in return. If he is visiting Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweed, Andaman and Nicobar islands, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, etc. He will get to see nature's beauty.
the cities like mumbai and delhi are overcrowded and slum-like areas. i recommend going to towns, which are smaller, better planned, more peaceful and cleaner
India can definitely be an intense and a crazy experience and definitely isn’t for everyone but there’s so much cultural to this amazing country that I think people should at least give it a chance.
Kolkata is not in the North East of India. It is in the East of India. Kolkata is called the City of Joy. Drew, I want to suggest you to tour entire Kolkata to get the original essence. You will feel the essence of music, poetry, culture, craze for sports (specially Football) in the air of Kolkata.
These people come to India and think the real ones live where the poor people are.. But no my friend, even I can go to New York and just visit homeless neighbourhoods and be like this is where the real New Yorkers live. I'd say instead the real hardworking people live in posh to medium posh places.. I have all the sympathy for the poor people but they need to do more in terms of their choices: like someone instead of begging can choose a small work at somebody's shop.. it's all about choices in the end. But you visiting only them and calling them as those are the real people of India is injustice to all the hard working class people who actually view your videos
Very interesting massage, very special country! This is the first time I’ve seen a taxi equipped with an electric fan! I love the smiles on Indian faces! You did a really great job, thanks a lot for sharing!👍😄👏
You don’t travel much do you, because these electric fans are pretty standard in many countries around the world, and I even seen them in the USA down south. And FYI… almost every car in the world has a fan (A/C / heat) in it, and all electric. 😂
Great to see you visit my city Drew. Also I can tell you've had a very positive experience with Muslims throughout the world which is evident in your other videos and when you mistook the kind hearted Hindu man for Muslim when he refused to let you pay, since its so common for Muslims to show such a gesture. Love your content Drew. Shalom from India 😊.
Muslims may appear "kind and innocent" on the outside but once you get to know them .. btw, I'm an ex Muslim living in a Muslim country . Muslims are NOT kind. they may appear like angels at first but that feeling will vanish once you really get to know them

Great, you visited my city Kolkata, it has a lots of space to explore. the old kolkata which we called the North kolkata is just amazing you can visit here once, to experience the old charm of kolkata their people, food, cultures, Heritage buildings and so on! Enjoy this trip mate ❤, more nd more people should visit our city and explore the diverse culture here
i have started my travels in India and Nepal, around 20 something years ago... Since then I never cameback, but i think it comes in my mind almost everymonth since then. That was another amazing video, for a really amazing country ! I am glad you experience was cool this time ! Namaskar bhai !
I loved india since I knew about it. I had been seeing lot of indian food videos about it and it made me really fell in love with India, I wanted to try its food, its sweet and every snacks in India, so I think it is best if you give India another chance and try visiting new places that you never visited in India. Love India from Philippines 🇵🇭
India saved my life! I used to live there for a year, and then recived a liver tranplant, which has beed refused me in my country because of my illnes. India is my second home, i love country an good people live there. Namaste!❤

Leftist woke people destroyed Kolkata and its economy forever. BJP is corrupt but they build roads, rails and infra while commies in Bengal hate industry and business environment.
I don't think I need reason to not subscribe to Drew's channel. In nearly all his videos, he intentionally visits the chaotic streets for sake of few views. His videos end up stereotyping India and Indians. If he wanted he could have decided to visit the better places. I have seen so many Indians commenting on his video, that his idea of India is very superficial. I have seen so many subscribers asking him to visit better places in India, but he always ends up visiting the older parts of cities which even as Indians we don't visit that often.
Despite India's problems, I won't support such condescending title for the video. Americans make a joke of themselves across the globe because of people like him.
I am from Israel, and I loved my visit and stay in the Himalayas (Himanchal) and Goa. India is much more vibrant in many good ways than he shows in his videos.
My friend, great to see that you visited my home country and started your vlog from my home city as well. Having being out of India for a long now, your vlog on Kolkata made us feel nostalgic. Well, there many places to visit in India and you will come across many different culture and people. If possible try to visit North Bengal for its natural beauty. All the best for the rest of your journey. With love from Scotland, UK ❤

Unrelated to India but I think it would be really cool for you to explore the indigenous communities of Canada at some point! I'm definitely biased but places further north of the American border are so ignored and as a Canadian I'm curious to know what goes on up there. Especially the Inuit communities in the arctic. Would be a much more different (and probably interesting) take on Canada than the usual Toronto or rocky mountains content.
I heard about the honking from a person from Malaysia. I Malaysia is is a grave disrespect, but in India the honking is encouraged to let someone know of the intent to pass. On the back of trucks "horn ok please". So many faiths are living harmoniously in India. It's fantastic! Thank you for your time, patience, and effort in making a great video.
You could also try just using your blinkers, mirrors, and following the rules of the road. Most of the world manages to drive without slamming on their horn 24/7.
Why was this video just a slum tour? Why couldn't you take him to better parts or atleast shown some good footage of our city. This is such negative representation. Even you know kolkata is not just metiabruz and zakaria street. How are you OK with this?
It's like a symphony of car horns, street vendors, and enthusiastic conversations that somehow create a uniquely chaotic harmony. I visited India few years ago for our TV show special and when your friend says, "Kolkata has a soul in it", I somehow felt I could relate to it. If I would get the chance, I would surely be back.

Big cities like mumbai, chennai, bangalore, kolkata, even delhi obviously will be crowded and have traffic issues. These aren't exactly touristy destinations. There are so many places in every state that is quiet and peaceful and has a varied environment for a good tourist experience
@@SassySceptile I have seen vdo of slay point where they addressed the same issue vloggers do not visit to places like himachal ,meghalaya ,Uttarakhand, Andaman,Kerala etc mostly
I liked the one TH-camr who went to India and basically spoke honestly about the problems there. That’s the sort of stuff that spurs change. India has long ways to go
Lol, which one? This is a whole cottage industry now. Doesn't take much bravery to go to a poor country and then complain about their problems, but it does help to be rich, white, and have a good old-fashioned colonialist mindset.
Thanks Drew for visiting India……Kolkata is very vibrant city with so much diversity and lovely people…..India is very beautiful and culturally rich country with diverse and lovely people from all walks of life and with all seasons and different landscapes from Himalayas to green planes and beaches…..You can also visit any city from Varanasi, Mathura, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Nasik, Hyderabad, Pondicherry, Leh, Pahalgam and so on…..Indian always love their guests 👍…….
It is sad to see how you explored Kolkata. You visited only chaotic wholesale market place of Kolkata, Kolkata is the economic hub of entire Eastern India, so obviously it has large market place, and that is burobazar. You did not even visited two important synagogues in Kolkata which were just few metres away from the place you were standing. That two are Maghen David and Beth El Syangogue. Kolkata is called "Cultural capital of India". You did not visit India's one of the largest book market, College Street. You did not explore colonial past of Kolkata, and its colonial architecture, such as Writers Building, Victoria Memorial, Metcalf Hall, Town Hall, St Paul Cathedral, Metropolitan Building. You did not explore spiritual places of Kolkata like Kalighat, Dakshineshwar and Belur Math. Kolkata is diverse in each and every aspect, from culture to architecture to religion. Oh, I forget to mention New Town of Kolkata. That is the modern version of the city. That part of the city is completely opoosite to the part you shown in the video. New Town is information technological hub of the city. Hope, you will explore the city completely.
He wants to show the CRAZINESS and slums only. He is a a jew but he is not interested to see jewish culture & history in India. Also he had $50 only how could he explore other places

Damn! You did it. I've been living in a western country but I recently moved back home to India and I after living in Canada understood how different westerners properly are when it comes to these minute ways of living life compared to a lot of developing nations and I can say this video somehow makes me so proud of you. I love Kolkata, it is craziest cities of all in India out of the rest, as they it truly has a soul. You going around the streets of Kolkata reminded me of my younger days when I would do photowalks around the city, this video was a sweet reminder i should do it again!
It's wonderful to see your perspective on Kolkata! The "City of Joy" is a place that defies simplistic stereotypes. It's more than what a single video or limited portrayal can capture. You're absolutely right, it does have its share of historical elements, evoking an ancient charm, however, there's another vibrant side to Kolkata as well. The city has embraced modernity, boasting an infrastructure that continues to flourish. Kolkata offers a kaleidoscope of experiences! Here's to hoping that your next visit to Kolkata will be an enriching and colorful exploration of all its facets. Sending loads of love and rosogollas from Kolkata! ❤

Hi Drew, Although I also think India is super busy, crowded & dirty at some areas but it's upto Individuals to choose what to see & what to show. As an Indian I would really not visit Kolkata for leisure (Although I have for some reason & made vlogs), we all know it's one of the oldest cities in India & only major city between many poor states of India. If you wish to see & show there are countless experiences (pleasant ones) in India you can have. Regarding the title, I personally don't feel offended because as Indians we also hate lot of things about our country but there are equally great things like any other country has. Hope you enjoy this time !
I feel offended by the thumbnail, if I went to new york which is the most busiest city in US, i will only find more people, honking, traffic. Crying over too many people while knowing you are visiting some of the most populated cities in the world, is not only stupid but funny. As an Indian who loves to travel around India, I have visited J&K there were hardly any busy street like Delhi, or look at Ladakh. This is just another case of bad vlogging.
Even Kolkata for the most part is laid back and less chaotic than Mumbai and Delhi. The video shows Zakaria street and Rabindra sarani in Barabazaar area of Kolkata; its a wholesale market place
Foreigners purposely go into old part of cities which are over crowded by illegal immigrants from Bangladeshis. They dont go newer areas which are better and less crowded.
We don't have to care what they show. Our first thing is to take care of our Bangladeshi hindu brothers and sisters who came to india their hindu land.
I don't believe in any religion but I love hindu and Buddhism religions. they're very beautiful and unique religions , their ceremonies and traditions are beautiful too ❤
@@aaaaaa-hh8cq yes. So refreshing versus the hell & damnation energy emitted by some forms of religion. I truly appreciate the beauty presented by Buddhist & Hindu, Sufi religions. It uplifts. THE VIBE of INDIA is rough & ready yet so beautifully natural and organic. Imagine when the country regains EMPIRE state??? Unrivalled. Architecture, people, culture etc ?? Ahhh....🌼🌼🌼🌼
I don't know why foreigners are exaggerating that slum things an all.. cause in every country their are some negative points... here in India their are many heavenly place.. you should go there and explore! I'm Indian n I proud to be Indian ❣️
@@moraz1111 it's impacting on our global image, youtubers n vlogger like this are always gives narration n thumbnails like this, it's really hurt bro.yes slums and poor people they do exist.. but they are bind with love kindness. @@pranitawaghmare3604 impacting image? you guy have 20% of world population with only 2% of world gdp. whos fault? vloggers'? ofc when with such figures a country is bound to drag in poverty. whos fault?
@@pranitawaghmare3604 Telling the truth about poverty is not disrespecting cultural. You are confusing honesty with bigotry. There is a difference. Have you ever left India? Leave, go to the West, see the slums and then make comparisons. Yes, every country has slums, but the situation in India is MUCH worse than in 90% of the remaining world. I say this is a proud Indian. The fact of the matter is we have failed the lower classes. We have completely and utterly ignored them for centuries. These youtubers and vloggers should be applauded for bringing attention to an important issue. Unlike the mjority of Indians who are like you and wish to pretend as if none of this exists. Wake up and smell the reality, the “heaven” you are speaking of is less than 1% of the country. These people are trying to focus on the situation of the masses, which is exactly what they should do. Ignoring it for the sake of image as you suggest, would be severely detrimental to improving the situation in India. Without criticism, progress is impossible.
He just wishes to show how poor some people are!! He doesn't care about all these ...his focus is to show " *look how poor some people are and compare to them how rich and luxurious lifestyle we have... it's so satisfying to watch some people's poverty* "
Italians, Portuguese , Spanish & probably the French too call the city Calcuta. Somehow Calcutta (Kolkata) has an Italian connection apart from.the name, not sure whether the cities founder Job Charnock was Non-English man - French ? Or Italian?
i mean as a foreign visitor to india you have to enter through a big city and youre only kidding yourself if you think people wont be shocked at the way of life in these cities compared to other countries. if you choose to become offended thats on you because the reality is that you see things in india that are completely unheard of in other countries, and there is nothing wrong with exploring that
Drew you are so courageous! I’m a travel vlogger and I have always wanted to go to India. But everyone who hears me say that discourages me( I am a female solo traveler) I wonder why! I would really like to try the food there😋
Yeah I would advise against it as well. It would be better if you had like an Indian with you because you'll have to navigate through shithole at times to see the prized beauty. That's how India is. You are awestruck at the end but the journey kills and sucks out joy at times.

Kolkata is just insane. A lot of hue and cry, gathering, crowd, heritage, culture, people. Thats why its called city of joy. I also want to visit Kolkata one day. From Chittagong, Bangladesh

It's amazing how with digitization the image of India is so drastically changing. The western media always portray India as a backward country with no culture. We're in fact the most culturally rich and diverse. We had more money and class than the world could ever imagine, but centuries of invasions and loot changed it. And despite all the problems, India is still making it. This decade belongs to India. We're an example of perseverance and sincerity. We need more vloggers like Drew to travel across India, so the world knows who we really are and what we're made of. Everytime I see an Indian travel vlog by travellers like Drew - I feel proud.. and appreciative of these vloggers who are here to explore but also end up showing the real picture of the country. Kudos to Drew and the likes. And India too! Correction: Replace "India" with "Bharat"

I was just wondering at 5:08 when you show a place where you can worship, is that swastika signs or does that mean something eles?? Like in Japan ( I think but I could be wrong on the country) they use them as a symbol for bathrooms. And the people who lived there did not even realize what that symbol means. I was just wondering.

You came to Kolkata and showed only the slums and the busiest markets of the world, but not the modern side and the side for which Kolkata is famous for, i.e., literature, art, culture, architecture, buildings, smart cities and most important festivals.
100% agreed. On one hand I would love to visit India, but the horns and the chaos are just too much... I have social anxiety and I'm hypersensitive to sound. Indian cities would be really hard for me.
I genuinely hope you cover the other aspects of India and not just the chaos. I personally love your videos but I find this one unidimensional. It is like travelling to LA and just visiting Skidrow. Kolkata itself has some pristine and beautiful places which you haven’t visited. Outside Kolkata - India has amazing places like Kerala, Himachal, Kashmir, entire North East of India, Goa, Rajasthan and I can go on. Hope you make an effort to cover those.

It's called culture shock. India is maybe one of the most alien cultures on earth for Westerners and so it's really hard visiting at first because nothing works the way you expect and everything is chaotic. That's how people know how biased you are,,, so please try to change your self

Take a cue from nat geo's India mega festivals series ! I am so done with backpackers staying in the cheapest accommodations and eating cheap street food (which even most Indians avoid) and then they complain about India. There is so much natural beauty, humanity, history and use of modern technology in India. Maybe also try showing those
Excellent filming, Drew! You can really feel the atmosphere of the streets. When I was a little boy I lived in West Bengal, northwest of Calcutta. That was back in the 1960s. Re the yellow taxis, those cars are Ambassadors. We had a metallic blue one - in Bengal and later in Bombay. They were manufactured in West Bengal. Btw, it's How-rah Bridge, not Hoo-rah.
India is a beautiful Nation and Kolkata is a city near my heart. Thank you for sharing! (If you have a chance to get to the land of Haridwar DO IT! Totally different and almost remote-feeling.)
Some random traveller says he hates India, giving India a second chance and yet when he asks for places to go next, Indians are welcoming him to their own states. Mr.Drew Binsky that is India for you. பிறப்பொக்கும் எல்லா உயிர்க்கும்.
Where should I visit in India next? I’m here for a few weeks making videos and I’d love your input! Thank you so much for watching!!! 🇮🇳🙏🏼
Yes
Haridwar, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu
Choose any one and go there you will love it
mizoram
You should visit something new and different, consider North East, Kerala (Munnar) and Kashmir!
Come to Bengaluru

India will remain the same for the West.
Dude he wants to experience how locals live, which honestly as an Indian, isn't great a lot of the times but yeah some parts of Kolkata are meh

Don't go it's ugly poor creepy smelly😂
@FactGuy-74 there are some really beautiful sites to see, especially in the south or places where there is low population density. If you are visiting overcrowded slummy part of a major city, that's what you get. But all this chaos makes for an engaging video lol. Won't recommend solo females to come here though
Huge fan, and super grateful you gave India another chance! Really hope you return to Bangladesh and give it another chance!
As much as I like Drew, most foreign vloggers always just portray the slums and the poor side of India like literally always lol. They've got to show all the nasty stuff as much as possible when there's literally so much good stuff out there.
Because that's hard reality
forget poverty, because india is poor no doubt about it
But the question indians should be asking is, why these foreign vloggers just visit Old delhi/mumbai? why the most populated cities? what do they expect?
Populated means More people
Why don't they visit natural and scenic places like Kerala, Ladakh, J&K, Himachal pradesh, or North East?
They will only get concrete in Delhi/Mumbai
@@OdinUpsilon No its literally not. Check out kolkata from google maps. Majority is middle class areas. The area he went is just a tiny portion. And although i agree that they government has failed to upgrade that area, i always see foreign vloggers go to that tiny piece of land. Always. Really annoying.
I mean people do not go to USA schools to experience gun shooting all the time. They go the natural parks, the hikes, the treks etc.
That’s what stands out when you haven’t grown up in those shit conditions

Stop visiting just crowded cities and crying over the fact that there are lot of people, you get what you went for, you went for a crowded city and you got crowd in return
Drew needs to grow up as a vlogger, it's a true shame not only to vlogging but other international vloggers not teaching him how to vlog.

I don't know why foreigners are exaggerating that slum things an all.. cause in every country their are some negative points... here in India their are many heavenly place.. you should go there and explore! I'm Indian n I proud to be Indian ❣️
It's not an exaggeration. India literally has the biggest slums in the world. What do you want people to do - pretend they don't exist?
