I just got an Ego cordless, battery-powered self-propelled mower to eliminate gas engine maintenance. I'm 70-years-old now, and feeling it. So, I cleaned up the Honda to make it shine for photos on Internet selling sites. Then I started it and pushed the thumb-buttons, and NOTHING! No warning. Just suddenly no transmission. I think it's the belt, or at least I hope so, so thanks for your video. Hopefully, I can sell it for a good amount once I've fixed the problem. Shouldn't be a problem selling a lightly-used, 3-year-old Honda in very good shape. 👍
Great video, but there was one thing that I had to do differently. The most difficult part of the belt change for me was dealing with the fact that there was no way my hands would fit in there to remove/reconnect the cable, and more importantly the spring. The bracket holding the spring fell out while it was hanging loose, which seems like something that would happen to most people. And there is no way in the world I could get my fingers in there much less my hand to reinsert the backet. For a quick job, I spent 80% of the time trying to find a way to reconnect the spring and the cable without being able to reach either with my hands. But, when I removed the rotating liner, which you suggested not to do, I was able to reach through and access both easily. So for someone like myself with large hands, I most definitely recommend removing that as part of your process.
Glad it worked out for you. When I did this repair, obviously that bracket didn't fall out on me, I didn't even realize it was a problem until some others asked about it. Quick look at parts diagram let me to where it should go. Maybe the tension on the cable was enough to not fall out? Thanks for watching.
This is the only video that shows how to properly change a belt on this new model. I just got mine on and it works perfectly. There was a rock lodged in the pulley digging a groove. To adjust the cable length per Honda manual: With engine running start tightening down the nut until the mower barely creeps forward on its on. From that point reverse it 5 full turns and lock it down.
Thanks Mr Byron! The manual had no info on how to change out the belt, but I missed that adjustment spec. A little bit of play in the handle works for me too. Cheers!
Thanks for the tips. Just changed belt today, and removed everything underneath. Wish I watched earlier. It sure would have saved some time. Keep up the good work.
I have that mower i cut other people lawns to make money got it last year it has never let me down, I’ve taken care of it and it’s still going strong. Good job on the video and fixing the mower!
Thanks for watching. Honda has always made a superior product IMO, but they are getting cheaper in their execution these days. I wound up cutting out my commentary on those changes. I might make a video on that in the future. Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady Brea the Chickmachanic on her channel did a review on this HRN on it's short comings. Especially when using it as a mulcher. That clog up really bad and can actually throw the belt off.
@@raymondcampbell2346 Thanks, I enjoy her videos. I made that review as promised, a few months before, of my impressions as well: Honda HRN216 Mower Review for 2022: Good? Bad? Ugly? th-cam.com/video/QnYEtnGgiXc/w-d-xo.html I appreciate you watching.
Thanks for your video. It was the only one I could find on this model mower. I am 69 years old and find it rewarding when I can handle fixing things on my own. I also use my mower as a brush hog lol.
Greaat video. You rock Lawnmower Lady ;) I will add one thing. It may sound silly but I'm a long time lawn mower and small engine repairer and it still took me a couple of minutes to figure out. So: if you're working on getting that nut loose from the rear drive pulley and the tansmission won't rotate far enough to access the 6mm flat then just move the lever for the rear wheel height adjustment. Voila... all the room in the world. Also while I used a 6mm wrench I'd suggest vise-grips as shown in this video. My 6mm open end wanted to slip off the flat. I've installed belts (and drive cables) on other Honda shutter type mowers where you literally had to remove all the shutter parts. It is a PITA and makes the job take 3 times as long. This was a piece of cake. Thanks again LML!
Ur video was very good. I took some of your clips and another provider and it worked fine Your tension release to the cable was amazing cause I too didn’t want to stretch the belt
Thank you! This was so informative; now I need to get my husband to watch the video; and yes, I m sure I broke my belt trying to mow my grass with a few small limbs in my way! My bad
Thank you for this very good video. Everything worked to perfection and all the little tips you gave along the way were exactly right for my mower. The cable tension tip made getting the belt back around the housing very easy
EXCELLENT VIDEO. Really, you did a wonderful job of explaining every step, and making it accessible to a common homeowner. SUGGESTION: I'm not positive, but I think that the only direction it's safe to tip that engine is towards the right (as if you were draining the oil) as you did in your video, and that tipping it other directions can lead to oil getting places in the engine it's not supposed to (or leaking out and making a mess). If I'm wrong, disregard this. If I'm right, I think that would be important to insert (text overlay?) into your video at that point around 1:52. ALSO, at 4:49 you put "13 mm spanner" text on the screen, but I just did mine (exact same mower as in this video) and it's actually a 14 mm. Anyway, thank you so much!!
I have to replace my belt for this exact mower, ty so much! What i am gonna try is installing the belt around the blade adapter first then to the pully.
Report back pls. Someone else asked about this, and I figure it might be more difficult stuffing that belt in the other direction, unless you have tiny boneless hands and arms :) Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great video, it certainly helps all of us. Just wanted to add a note on the transmission pulley - both sides of the pulley you'll notice a dimple protruding out along with holes. You need to align them so that they on opposite sides, 180 deg from each other. One dimple will set in a hole on the other pulley, and the same with the other side of the pulley. This is how they lock and align onto each other, if you do not do this, your pulley will not be aligned and will be wider on one side tat the other, and cause the belt to fluctuate. Thanks ALL
Thanks LLady. I have a Honda HRR216. Very similar. Your way, removing the pulley, seems like a lot easier to change the belt than what is recommended. You didn't have to remove the plastic shroud. But the other way it wasn't necessary to remove the blades. I'll try it your way next time and see which is easier. I may get a third chance. The charm. LOL
It is the Honda auto choke that causes surging until engine temp rises enough to melt wax in choke actuator, not bad gas. The choke is closed and gradually opens as engine temp rises. Initial surging on cold start is completely normal.
Thanks for the great video. Replaced a stretched belt myself - local Honda service center had 3 week wait to get looked at. TH-cam Rocks! I have a channel myself for real estate.
I just tried to start mine and it started making a knocking sound. We had some standing flood water around the bottom of the mower deck the other day so I wonder if that had something to do with the problem. I checked and the belt seemed a little bit loose for some reason but I don't think that the belt was broken because it worked just fine the last time I mowed with it. The plastic piece that sets a top. The mower deck seems a little bit loose. Also. I was able to jiggle it a little bit so I'm not sure if that has something to do with the problem. Anyways, thank you for making this video because it's certainly going to help me once I have the time to change the belt.
Aww, thank you. Actually I think I got my mechanical chops from his Dad... PaPa Shorty. He was a mechanic working at a car shops in the 1930s-1950s. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
I followed advice on another video and detached the transmission spring.. and it flew off and I had to put the mower upright to get it to fall out. For the life of me I can’t find where to attach that other end to. My drive cable also will not reach to go back on.. so I’m going to try loosening it like you did and hope it will reattach!
It's sort of a flattened Z-bend. look up behind the gearbox, and you will find a slot. Feed the end past the bend, and attach the spring. The spring tension holds it in place. Hope this helps.
@@TheLawnmowerLady I found it!! Now I just can’t get it to stay in. It falls straight back out. I’m going to try and get it upright but right now I only have it on it’s side
Just what I needed. There seems to be a good many changes from the HRR versions, so this saved me much unnecessary work, cussing and wondering why things just don't add up. Every bit of your instruction was needed to get the job done.
Thanks Mr Brian, I have enough video on the machine, while awaiting the drive belt, that I might do a video on the changes good/bad that Honda has made on these newer models.
Great advice Stella! I never understand way people buy a high end mower and then treat it like a $119 Walmart throw away. Nice repair video. Happy New Year Stella! 🎉🇺🇸🎉Roger
I've had two of those same hondas. Very dissappointed in both! Both were treated very gently with hardly no hours before major problems. Junk, save your money!
Good informative video Miss Stella. Please don’t say l don’t need special tools, my wife might hear you and start asking awkward questions 😁 Happy new year
Excellent video, thanks. I'm looking at a Honda HRX which uses a "hydrostatic" transmission which I think works differently than the belt drive HRN. That said, yeah, if you use any lawnmower as a bush-hog, you'll have problems quick.
Enjoyed the video. Idea, while you had the belt out i would have measured it up and taken it to a belt replacement store or wherever they sell them and got an identical and or noted the size it was in comparison, then if another mower comes in you can buy the right size belt the next day and not wait and also you could have shown other viewers the belt size and they could go buy one quickly.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Sorry I actually meant the new honda belt, before fitting it, go size it up against some new ones in a store and get it's size, so your prepared next time and also pass that size on to viewers if possible. I've got a three wheel edger with a 4hp honda, I never go to the original maker or mower shops, I go straight to a specialised machinist shop nearby who carrys a large range and also does those kevlar belts and the cogged v belts and a large range of pulleys, Would be interesting to see if a cogged v belt would run better on the honda given it's running on a tight circuit.
I have the exact same mower,, heard that changing the belt was a pain,,,wondering though,, why did you have to loosen the cable? Why not just leave the spring off the gear box and roll it forward, looks like it would do the same thing. Thank you for the video, lets me know what to look for if I ever have to change the belt on mine.
Hi, thank you for providing this video. It really helped me to replace my belt. But, I decided o take the trans Spring off the relieve the tension and the spring and short bracket fell out. I could not find where that small bracket went, looked for a very long time. Then I rewatched our video and I saw where the bracket could be. I found a slot where the bracket could go, but it would not stay in place. What keeps that bracket from falling out so. Can hook up the spring on the trans bracket ams?
Several folks has asked about this. I don't have this mower anymore, but you should see a slot, it's pretty well hidden, where that return spring bracket attaches. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching Mr Big! I still have HR215 commercial mower that I bought new, 22 years ago. Don't remember the last time I started it. Honda makes some quality products, and this new HRN mower is OK, but not as well made as the older ones. Cheers!
Thank you for the tutorial. I need to replace my belt this evening. I also may need to adjust the drive cable. Do you have a video for that? Is it the same procedure as the model sold immediately before this one? Thanks.
It's the same adjusters I showed in this video. If you need the drive to engage sooner, lengthen the outer cable (show more threads) If it engages too fast, shorten the outer cable. I hope that helps! Cheers Mr Jonathan!
Stella thanks for the stellar vid! I have the same mower. The belt burned and shredded while I was mowing on a hill. When I took the belt out the spring and bracket that attaches to the mower fell out. Not sure how to get the bracket back in place? Do you have any experience with that? thanks for your help!
Thanks for the great video! I was able to change the belt but something else happened and I can't find a solution. The bracket clutch spring and spring wheel tension fell off and while I know where one end of the spring goes, I can't find where the smaller bracket for the other end of the spring attaches to. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
You should find something to attach it to up behind the transmission. I don't recall if the exploded diagram shows where it goes. Many of the larger parts houses have those diagrams online now. Thanks for watching!
First thing, I thought, "oh man, is she that perky always?!" Nah, just presenting a good face. Ya fixed the belt issue! Good deal. Hey, when I try to smile I'm in serious danger of breaking my face. Hrm, the belt is not such a simple job. Tku for the presentation.
I recently replaced the drive belt using this great video. However, the transmission tension spring fell off along with the upper bracket plate that the spring attaches to on the mower housing. I am having trouble figuring out where the plate goes on the housing. Anyone know? Thanks
With the mower on its side, transmission up, you will find a slot. The dogleg of the bracket fits in, and the spring tension on the transmission ( when rotated around in its normal running position) keeps the bracket in place. Very difficult to see, you'll have to go by feel.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thank you. I found the slot and mowed my lawn today. I also realized you can see the dogleg of the bracket through the slit of the lever arm on the other side of the mower bed at about the number 2 adjustment. The slit is just large enough to wedge a screw driver to temporarily hold the bracket in place while reattaching the spring.
Thanks so much for the video. As an engineer, I can repair a lot of things ... but maybe not so good when it comes to mowers. I'm scratching my head on where the return spring connects. I'm holding a small bracket that fell while I was working but for the life of me- I can't see where it goes. Sigh .....
You'll see a slot up behind that pulley. It goes in at an angle and when you straighten it out, the spring tension holds it in the slot. I didn't show that in the video because that spring never went slack to allow it to fall out. Hope this helps.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thank you so much! I knew it had to be a slot and tension from the looks of the part. I saw it clear as day when I tilted the mower the opposite way that I did the work.
The spring mechanism on top of the rear wheel assembly. It came off completely when i worked on this belt replacement. It has the spring and a plate on the other end. I cannot figure out how that spring is put back on properly? Any suggestions or help on that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
You will find a slot in the deck, sort of behind the transmission that the flat part fits, insert it till you hit the bend and turn it 90 deg following the dog-leg bend. Tension on the spring/cable is what keeps it place. Hope this helps.
I’m pretty sure I did sharpen the blade, but left it out of the video. I figure someone looking to replace the belt would rather stick to that topic. I did do a tune-up video on this same mower. That might be where I sharpen the blades. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
thanks for the helpful video. i just bought a new HLN today and after reading some of the bad reviews on the Home Depot site, I was wondering if you had any experience with the engine surging, oil leaks, hard to pull starting handle, or transmission problems that have been mentioned? they only give you 30 days to return to store, so now I'm a bit leery that I'll run into some problems after using it for a month. People don't seem to like Honda's service either. People have said they had surging problems even always using clean gas and Honda won't cover any carburetor issues. just hoping I didn't buy a $550 piece of junk!
If it were me, I'd return the machine for a refund and look for a good HRX from a few years ago on CL or FB marketplace. That HRX is a far superior machine, better wheels, bearings, cables, etc. I personally have only dealt with broken belt. Poor baffle design allows trash to derail the belt. Like you, I've read a lot of poor reviews.
I bought those X-beam wrenches years ago form NorthernTool. The only thing I can find that is close now is by Gearwrench, but they have ratcheting box end/ ( I've had good luck with other Gearwrench tools, so I would hope they hold up well) amzn.to/3GOcKnj Thanks for watching!
If this began recently, and it clears up after a few minutes, maybe the wax thingy. If it only started at the beginning of this mowing season, I'd think it a carb issue, specifically the idle circuit. I've got several Honda carburetor cleaning videos, most nay will get you in the right direction. Thanks for watching.
Hey there one question , does a bad belt cause your mower to not self propelled? it won’t self propelled , idk if the belt is overstretched , had it for 2 1/2 years now , I have this same exact mower , I greased the wheel assembly’s , and cleaned them out , and didn’t change anything
Does it not move at all? Belt stretch can cause it to not engage well, but it still will go, a little bit. This video covers some other issues that might cause failure: th-cam.com/video/W2ERSoybD7A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=65dgmXodSsNI88zM Maybe your belt has popped off the drive pulley?
Thanks for watching Mr Paul. The transmission would not have the clearance to remove the bolt on the drive pulley to thread the belt into the keeper brackets without completely removing the transmission or being able to rotate it 90deg as I did. Cheers!
My hrr 216 is slightly different. I did have to remove the housing to be able to rotate the trans to proceed my unit has individual rear wheel adjustments and I adjusted the wheel nearest the trans for extra space. When I was done and placed the unit on the ground the rear wheels will not adjust evenly one has to be set higher 2 spaces higher to be even. Prior to the belt change there was no issue. Any ideas. Also, I did remove the spring but re attached it. Tx
That fella did a number on that machine! I wonder what crazy thoughts were going through that product design teams minds when they designed that set up! I swear they do it all on purpose.
Go to dealer and get what they call a "spring clip" that goes into a slit in the upper deck to attach the spring to. Took 3 months to get it from Honda dealer in Redding CA. Also had to order a spring. Works great now.

Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady I actually found a service manual online. They have you taking the wheels off. Your method is much better.

You're right. I started taking those baffles off, and decided there must be an easier way. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Ur video was very good. I took some of your clips and another provider and it worked fine Your tension release to the cable was amazing cause I too didn’t want to stretch the belt

Thank you for this very good video. Everything worked to perfection and all the little tips you gave along the way were exactly right for my mower. The cable tension tip made getting the belt back around the housing very easy
Glad it helped Mr Dean! I appreciate you watching.
Unfortunately, that kind of editing is not possible on TH-cam. I wish it was possible. Thanks for watching!

This is how they lock and align onto each other, if you do not do this, your pulley will not be aligned and will be wider on one side tat the other,
and cause the belt to fluctuate.
Thanks ALL
Great tip. Thanks!
The charm. LOL

Great simplified video, You Rock Lawn Mower Lady!!!

It is the Honda auto choke that causes surging until engine temp rises enough to melt wax in choke actuator, not bad gas. The choke is closed and gradually opens as engine temp rises. Initial surging on cold start is completely normal.
They do sometimes, but I can assure you, this was bad fuel left in this mower. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

For the life of me I can’t find where to attach that other end to. My drive cable also will not reach to go back on.. so I’m going to try loosening it like you did and hope it will reattach!

Excellent video, thanks. I'm looking at a Honda HRX which uses a "hydrostatic" transmission which I think works differently than the belt drive HRN. That said, yeah, if you use any lawnmower as a bush-hog, you'll have problems quick.
Yes it does! The "hydrostatic" part refers to shifting different gears (speeds) more smoothly. It still involves a belt. I appreciate you watching.

Thanks for watching. If the belt was not broken completely, I would have done that, but I had no idea if a chunk of belt was missing. Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady Sorry I actually meant the new honda belt, before fitting it, go size it up against some new ones in a store and get it's size, so your prepared next time and also pass that size on to viewers if possible.
I've got a three wheel edger with a 4hp honda, I never go to the original maker or mower shops, I go straight to a specialised machinist shop nearby who carrys a large range and also does those kevlar belts and the cogged v belts and a large range of pulleys,

I could not find where that small bracket went, looked for a very long time. Then I rewatched our video and I saw where the bracket could be. I found a slot where the bracket could go, but it would not stay in place. What keeps that bracket from falling out so. Can hook up the spring on the trans bracket ams?

Great video and great tutorial on that task.

BTW .. the part is HON-22455-VR8-N00 in case anyone can help.

You will find a slot in the deck, sort of behind the transmission that the flat part fits, insert it till you hit the bend and turn it 90 deg following the dog-leg bend. Tension on the spring/cable is what keeps it place. Hope this helps.
Awesome .. just bought this model last season and love it so far. Thought for sure you were going to sharpen those blades :).

thanks for the helpful video. i just bought a new HLN today and after reading some of the bad reviews on the Home Depot site, I was wondering if you had any experience with the engine surging, oil leaks, hard to pull starting handle, or transmission problems that have been mentioned? they only give you 30 days to return to store, so now I'm a bit leery that I'll run into some problems after using it for a month.

I have a hrv 170 that sounds like that mower when you started it at the end. But its way more dramatic. Would this be a carb or wax thingy issue
Is there a reason why the belt can't be installed on the blade pulley first ?
Thanks for watching Mr Paul. The transmission would not have the clearance to remove the bolt on the drive pulley to thread the belt into the keeper brackets without completely removing the transmission or being able to rotate it 90deg as I did. Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady thank you for the information , much appreciated

Also, I did remove the spring but re attached it. Tx

Great video as always. Question: what brand of puller do you use to get the blade adapter off?
I honestly don't know. Likely one I picked up from local auto parts store. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
Hey the return spring came off and i can find where to put the spring mount
There's a slot in the deck. Insert the end and flip it 90deg to get the dog-leg portion to lock in. Tension on the spring is what keeps it in place.
Go to dealer and get what they call a "spring clip" that goes into a slit in the upper deck to attach the spring to. Took 3 months to get it from Honda dealer in Redding CA. Also had to order a spring. Works great now.
