    Not only was it bad for La La Land but it took the first reaction/impression excitement away from Moonlight.

      I felt the same. I think Moonlight was the best film, but I felt kinda bad for cheering seeing how bad the La La Land producers felt in that moment.

      I think it gives Moonlight more press. More people will hear about La La Land and Moonlight because of the flub and hopefully more people will go out to see these films

      The happy ending joke Kimmel said about the movie wasn't caught by most of the audience so there's a good chance most people still haven't seen it!

    • @MoSho23
      @MoSho23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +David Ramon neither of these films are not tarnished. more ppl who would have never been interested in these films are now talking about them. Plus these films have already made millions, and La La Land has something like 6 awards. They're fine, both casts were gracious; its just an awards show that has little consequence on the world at large

    Poor Warren is not at fault here AT ALL.He was confused,he didn't call out the name.He handed the envelope to Faye to take a look at and SHE blurted out the name.

    • @YvonneSLa
      @YvonneSLa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Faye was not at fault, she thought she was helping out a tongue tied Warren. Warren should take some blame as he was the very first person to notice something is wrong.

      Yes, PwC are at fault. Warren only at fault for not stopping proceedings when he noticed something wrong. He is senior enough to execute a search for the real envelope. Faye is not at fault.

    Emma Stone is a natural blonde!

    • @BeyondTheTrailer
      @BeyondTheTrailer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      (sigh) As I stated below to another comment, she's a natural blonde who wisely has gone around as a redhead - even when not in a film - because it makes her more likable. She tried to transition to her natural color with Spider-Man as an excuse, but it didn't work.

    • @josesarango3408
      @josesarango3408 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Wow! "the redhead makes her more likeable". So readheads are more likeable than blondes? Or there are some people that are more likeable if they have certain hair color? So people's opinion that she looks better as a blonde don't matter?? WTF

    • @Cbricklyne
      @Cbricklyne 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It wasn't an excuse though.
      The character she played of Gwen Stacy is very recognizably and iconicly a blonde.
      To have a redhead Gwen Stacy would have been as anathema to fans as having a blonde or brunette Mary Jane Watson.
      Some things you just don't change from the comics and Gwen Stacy's look is one of them. (Even the original Raimi Spiderman movies recognised this and when they cast redhead Dallas Bryce Howard in the same role they had her dye her hair blonde to stay faithful to the character's look in the comics).
      If your argument is that Emma Stone looks better as a redhead, then you'll find that even SHE agrees with you there as that's her preferred hair color to wear on a day-to-day basis.
      But criticising someone's decision to change their hair color to match the character's (well-established and recognised) hair-color seems a little but silly in my opinion.

    • @josesarango3408
      @josesarango3408 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cbricklyne Agreed. Except I like Emma as a blonde, and she looked stunning as Gwen.

      There has never been even 1 single person whom i judged by their hair color. I don´t think that any of this is a big deal. I even remembered her being blonde in Oscar Bait Land but my mind misfired.

    personally i love moonlight and la la land... i think moonlight is a better story, but for me la la land is a better made movie across the board, and this has a lot to do with the politics, where moonlight gives the academy at least a year of the #oscarsowhite for next year... so dont be surprise if next year no black actors nominated

    • @ttrn01

      As for Asians and Native Americans, they need to protest/boycott or whatever on their own terms and not piggy back off Black people.

    It probably took some time for the Price Waterhouse people to communicate with the production to inform them of the mistake and for everyone to figure out what to do. I feel sorry for Warren Beatty. He realized something was wrong, but he probably didn't know how he should communicate that. Plus the pressure of being live in front of hundreds of millions of people. I've had that vapor lock look on my face myself. Poor guy.

    • @OddTillTheEnd
      @OddTillTheEnd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was so mad about that. They only chose Frozen because of the songs. Lets face it, without those songs it probably wouldn't have even been nominated.

      Just to clarify I liked Zootopia (and Moana) very much, but Zootopia got in my opinion already so much recognition and praise that I want to give Kubo some too. Just the art of stop-motion should not fade away and laika had now the best shot (based off the four other chances they had previous years) and just the overall look of Kubo and the feeling that the movie gives you makes it better in my opinion.
      (Hopefully in 2018 they will win and then not only for best animated movie but also for best picture 😜)

    I'm completely in love with La La Land but I knew it probably wouldn't win. Unfortunately the card mistake made the loss so much worse. Damien Chazelle's face said it all, having the oscar for 2 minutes and then having it ripped away was absolutely heartbreaking. I didn't see Moonlight but just based on the general reception, I'm happy for them. They obviously worked really hard to tell an important story. I'm just stoked that Emma Stone won. This is HUGE for her career and I'm thrilled to see where she goes from here.

    Fascinating that Meryl Streep has to check herself and "learn a lesson" something that the "other side" is never asked to do. I think the support in the room throughout the night for Streep spoke volumes, which meant she didn't need to.

    Hey Grace. What did you think of Casey Affleck's speech? Didn't it seem a bit awkward to you? As if he wasn't expecting to win due to the sexual harassment allegations? I think he deserved to win for his performance in Manchester By The Sea, but if I were voting, I would have given it to Denzel with no hesitation.

    Dear Grace,
    I’m a long-time viewer and I really enjoy your channels. I watch your channel every day and enjoy your conversation about the box office, actors’ careers, and diversity in front of and behind the camera. I’ve noticed that when conversations about diversity are usually had they discuss issues pertaining to women, LGBT people, people of color, (i.e. Blacks, Asians, Latinos, and Native Americans) and disabled people as if they are separate identities, while rarely acknowledging individuals’ intersecting identities and that there are specific issues that black women, gay Latinos, disabled Asians, transgender Native Americans, etc. face in society. Now, this brings me to the topic of the Black LGBT film, Moonlight. Thanks for reporting on Moonlight over the past few months. I was wondering if you would be willing to discuss the movie’s significance in relation to “mainstream” white LGBT films, and if you foresee Hollywood financing more Black LGBT films, especially now that Moonlight won the Oscar for Best Picture.
    Thanks and have a great day!

    I'm beyond thrilled Fantastic Beasts managed to get the Potter franchise's first Oscar, with this being the 13th nomination!!! I can't believe it didn't go to Stuart Craig for production design though, considering his insanely amazing and iconic world for Potter before as well as the theme parks. I mean, the influence his version of Hogwarts and the wizarding world have had on popular culture is so great and should finally be rewarded. I hope he'll get an Oscar next time around, he's so deserving!

    Warren Beatty was clearly about to step back up to the microphone, probably to explain the error, when Horowitz ran halfway across the stage and jumped in front of him. The more I watch it, the odder Horowitz's maneuvers seem to me. His mindset is completely understandable in the moment given all the chaos, but hindsight is what it is. Maybe a bit of "you guys screwed up already, let me just give them their Oscar."
    Now, I can't be sure about this, but I think that last guy speaking for La La Land (who first said "we didn't win but whatever") heard they didn't win and then gave his speech anyway for some reason. You can see off to the side the producer sorting out all the cards on stage, giving Beatty the correct one and telling him to go back up to announce the correct winner. Beatty was waiting for that last guy to finish before jumping back on the microphone to explain what happened (which he ended up doing a minute later).

    Here's my account of the Oscars (this is gonna be long) :
    - Best Supporting Actor : Mahershala Ali was a good choice, I wouldn't rate his performance as exceptional but he was very good nonetheless. Actually, I'd have liked to see him more in the movie but hey, I don't make the script. I guess his absence in the later parts of the movie was a conscious choice as if to say it ended bad for him.
    Jeff Bridges put on a great performance in Hell or High Water but I'd say it's something we've already seen from him (True Grit, R.I.P.D....) don't get me wrong I think he's one of the best actors in the history of cinema, but I wouldn't say he really challenged himself with this role.
    Lucas Hedges was good but not great in Manchester By The Sea, so I understand why he's here, but he's young so I get why he didn't get it.
    Michael Shannon was probably the only redeeming quality in an otherwise poor movie imho (should I say very pretentious & uninteresting), it wouldn't have been a scandal had he got it, he deserved it as well.
    - Best Make Up & Haistyle : totally agree with you, whatever people think about Suicide Squad I thought it was deserved. I liked Star Trek Beyond but Suicide Squad deserved it more.
    - Best Supporting Actress : well deserved but, as impressed as I was with Viola in Fences, I was even more impressed by the (too small) performance by Michelle Williams in Manchester By The Sea which I believe is simply the best performance period this year.
    - Best Animated Feature : Moana is the most visually beautiful animated movie I've ever seen (just couldn't keep my eyes off their hair lol so mesmerizing, not to mention the sea...), but agree that plot-wise Zootopia is a better movie. So, well deserved.
    - Best Visual Effects : I'd have given it to Doctor Strange because that's the only movie in a long time that I've seen effects I had simply never seen before, and asked myself how did they even do it? No offense to Jungle Book.
    - Best Song : easily should have gone to Can't Stop The Feeling! The two songs from La La Land were OK but nothing like Justin Timberlake's hit, as proved by his number opening the evening.
    Besides that, what an incredible performance by 16yo Auli'i Cravalho, I can't even begin to imagine the stress before her live solo performance in front of the whole of Hollywood, and 1 billion viewers lol
    When I think that even Adele fucked up a few years ago with her performance of James Bond's song SkyFall (the chorus is supposed to be repeated twice but she only sang the first chorus once -- btw it's still amazes me how the live orchestra around her was so good that they went with her and it went basically unnoticed, which is probably the most impressive live improv I've ever seen), you gotta give huge props to Auli'i Cravalho.
    - Best Actor : I think Casey Affleck deserved it. His performance wasn't perfect, I mean it's a difficult balancing act when you play an introverted guy who's supposedly empty inside but at the same time communicating emotions, but there are times in the movie where I think he could have done (slightly) better, overall a very solid performance anyway. I think Michelle Williams was even better than he was in her scenes.
    I personally think Denzel Washington's performance in Fences was way better that his Oscar winning one in Training Day, even though at times I kinda felt like he was slightly overacting, it kinda was obvious he was trying for the Oscar. Anyway I wouldn't have had a problem with him receiving it. This kind of flawed characters are way too rare in cinema imho. Btw I agree with you that Fences looked way too cheap/small budget.
    - Best Actress : I'm OK with Emma Stone getting it, even though as a French national myself I'd have been more than happy if Isabelle Huppert had won it (can't exactly complain after Marion Cotillard and Jean Dujardin got it though :p).
    I'm of the opinion that Emma's character wasn't particularly likable, but her performance of it in itself was pretty good. And she's always a pleasant person to see so, yeah.
    - Best Picture : First let me say that all nominated movies in this category were deserving of being in it.
    Then, I'm going to disagree with people here. I'm neither team La La Land nor team Moonlight. While both had their moments and are overall decent movies, the one that really made me feel emotions was Manchester By The Sea. To me it's the best picture of the year by a decent margin.
    I go to the movies to see films that make me feel emotions, and none have been able to do it quite like Manchester By The Sea. I would advise anyone reading this to go see it.
    Now I understand the subject of Moonlight is pretty "oscar-baity" intended or not, so I get how they got it and more power to them, it's awesome, but if we're going strictly by the qualities of the movie, I'd have given it to Manchester By The Sea.
    Voilà !
    Told you this was going to be long :p

      Our last hero Star Trek Beyond has a lot of cool "blink and you'll miss it" alien designs. The only ones that come to mind are the alien that had hid the thing in the back of her skull, the main bad guy and the white skinned warrior female. Makeup and hairstyling in Suicide Squad was mainly about bringing these fantastical comic book characters into a gritty Zack Snyder-esque somewhat believable world.
