Bad typography has ruined more than just the Oscars

  • How bad graphic design changed award shows, elections, and your medicine cabinet.
    The 2017 Oscars ended with a pretty shocking mix-up. Announcer Warren Beatty incorrectly named La La Land as the Best Picture winner, and the mistake wasn't revealed until crew members had already started giving their acceptance speeches. A lot of things went wrong for the snafu to happen the way it did. But what if typography was one of them? A better announcement card design could have made for a very different Academy Awards show - not to mention a much less embarrassing Miss Universe show for Steve Harvey back in 2015. But the implications of bad typography don't end there: poorly designed ballots in the 2000 presidential election arguably could have swayed the outcome, and illegible type on medicine bottles could be causing nearly 500,000 cases of drug misuse per year in the U.S.

      Hey Vox, love your video but, it was mostly bad layout/grid rather than just typography. There's a diference, Typography is more the type of font that you use (in simple terms), and layout is how the text is displayed in the object, like a magazine cover or the card from oscars.

      turns out graphic design IS important. Sadly it’s rare that a client is whiling to pay for this kind of thinking. A key thing to understand for designers watching this: the answer, the solution isn’t the whole story. you have to be able to sell that solution (often before you’ve made it) to a client who is very likely more interested in saving money or impressing their boss. Ways to do that is fully understand the clients problem and business (it may have nothing to do with users or the design), get in early, don’t wait to be picked and finally, learn how to be interested and listen *mic drop*

      I work in design, and frankly I wouldn't blame the designers. Often times brands/organizations become so obsessed with emphasizing their brand that they don't consider what they risk. For example, the original Oscar award card had the logo on top, which was obvious because they wanted to emphasize their brand over the actual information necessary. The same is with the original Target Pharmacy bottle. I've dealt with brands who become very touchy about their logos and how they are represented, down to the size and color you can make their logo and where they want it placed. It's really annoying to deal with.

That's just basic management.
      It's the fault of Warren Beatty, because he knew something was wrong, but was either too old or too drunk to double check the card.

The words must be combined with the speech, since the person knows what they're talking about (best picture). It's like one of those presentations in school in which you say out loud one thing then look back at the paper you're holding and repeat the same thing but this time reading lol

    I would love to have this content captioned in portuguese so I could show it to my students. TH-cam has a tool that allows any community member to contribute in such translations and I could do it myself, but you have that feature disabled in this video. I understand that you may have concerns over the quality of such translations, and that's probably the reason why its disabled. But is there any way that we can make that possible?
    Vox's content is always very well-researched and useful. It's a pity that we don't have this content available for wider audiences, such as non english speakers. There are many cases on youtube of big channels that use this community translation feature with great success.

The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing (leading), letter-spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning)."

      UtmostXtra I don't need to, im a graphic designer, i understand the terminology, but if you want to know The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, line-spacing (leading), and letter-spacing(tracking), and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning[1]). The term typography is also applied to the style, arrangement, and appearance of the letters, numbers, and symbols created by the process. typography has nothing to do with arragement of information (even thought a good typographer has to take it to account), typography has more to do with type arragement, were and how the caracteres are presented, not the information itself, so once again, Vox is not using the terminology correctly, im not saying the video is bad, im saying it has flaws

    • @UtmostXtra
      @UtmostXtra 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    • @victorenriquerenteriasosa936
      @victorenriquerenteriasosa936 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      UtmostXtra are you saying that the correct use of terminology is not important?, lets not call it tipography or graphic design, lets call it art, because according yo some definitions typography is an art, the title and the content of the video become leas coherent, i understand that from a mercadological point of view, Vox uses this kind of title yo attrac clics, because it looks like everyone "knows" what typography is right now, with the popularity of lettering, but that title isn't antes accurate descripción of the video, because they really talk about graphic and industrial design, granted, typography plays a rol in the video, but a very small one. if they trying yo really show the importance of typography, this is not really a good example, for the most part they don't talk about type, but If they're trying to show the importance of design, they really do a creat job, so, my question is, why downplay the strenghts of your video? are you trying to misslead people to think that typography is something that it isn't? or what the deal is?, as a designer i value feedback, so i give ir and take it wherever ir seems necesary, to improve myself and to improve others

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Where did you that it was design by committee?
      It appears the Academy was cutting costs this year. They nixed the costlier formal press conference and replaced it with an online announcement. Then they discontinued outsourcing the envelope design and did it in-house with a committee where no one on the committee had graphic design experience.
      Technology is great when it saves time and money if it is in the hands of someone with the proper knowledge and experience. But when it is in the hands of rank amateurs who think they know what they are doing when they really don't, you get atrocious results like this god-awful-looking website. www.faceslappingnatural.com/ Several different fonts, bad grammar, outrageous claims, underlining, out-of-aspect ratio pictures, insulting language ("Warning: Sell to right person only, If you don't have money, don't buy it!! because it is expensive. It is designed with love and understanding.") The webpages just hurt your eyes. This store got news coverage in local and national television. It was permanently closed within months.

    Almost three years too late, but here's a piece of information that I wish was presented in this video: the reason he got confused. I had to do a massive search to understand he received the wrong card, and was getting mixed informations between Emma Stone, from La La Land receiving Best Actress and knowing the card should say something else (Moonlight, and the "best picture" at the bottom).

    This is a really lovely video, but I would argue that these are not typography problems but they are instead great examples of information architecture problems. It's a really fascinating field of study that makes a difference in the world and of course typography is crucial to making it work. Thanks for emphasizing the important work that designers do nevertheless.

    Design is under appreciated. It makes the world a little bit better when done well. You can always buy something with the same specs cheaper, but the physical effort of simplifying a problem down to it’s most functional form always makes lay people think “what? Someone was paid to do that? It’s so obvious!” When in fact it is only obvious and intuitive because someone spent a lot of time and years of training to produce something that anyone can pick up and use as it was intended. Then others copy the design which bypasses all of the hard work that went into the original.

    In Slovenia, medicines ussually comes in cardboard boxes in blister packets.
    It's weird how the US doesn't adapt to new things, while we've done it for a long time. I mean, WHY NOT USE BLISTER PACKETS INSTEAD OF BOTTLES?
    Target's pill bottles looks dope tbh, with coloured rings like the detachable *teethbrush* ones.

      Medications that do not need a doctor's prescription are usually sold in blister packs. However, medications in the United States that require prescription can be expensive such as $15 per pill. Prescriptions can specify amounts that are uneven, for example: 7, 17, or 53. It is economically efficient for pharmacies to purchase medications in large bulk quantities and dispense custom quantities as needed.

    • @alexanderchristopher6237
      @alexanderchristopher6237 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RaymondHng I don't know how they did it in Slovenia, but prescription drugs usually comes in those bottles (if it's a pill) pretty much in most of the world.

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexanderchristopher6237 It may be that medication prices in Slovenia are heavily regulated and kept low so that there is little cost incentive to dispense medications in custom quantities.

    Basically make the most important information the first thing someone will read. There’s a meme that says something like “You read this first. You read this second. You read this third. You read this last.” in different font sizes and weights in different places on the picture, and it actually illustrates what about text catches people’s attention and in what order really well.

    I'd love it they made the run time on films more legible, and easier to find. I was trying to coax my friend into watching this really good film, and they only had so much time before they had to be off on an appointment. so they wanted to know the run time. Wasn't on the sleeve, the box, or the DVD itself. We ended up looking the time online, but by then it was to late. I don't care that the film has Japanese subtitles. I just want to know how long the movie's going to be.

    What it boils down to is hierarchy and clarity, bold large font weight for what’s important and thin short font weight for what’s not. We read from left to right and top to bottom, so work smart and happy font types
