  • The Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen was a light 4-wheel drive amphibious car built in Germany during WW2. It had a top road speed of 50mph (80kph), and a top speed in water of 6mph (10kph) propelled by a screw propeller that hinged down at the back to engage drive from an extension of the engine's crankshaft. Produced from 1941, over 15,500 were built by Volkswagen and Porsche. This Schwimmwagen was restored by The Weald Foundation, based near Maidstone in Kent, and I filmed it during their Members' Open Day.
