@@Slenderman63323 The 1GR head gasket issue was fixed early on and would have affected the 2GR, but for last minute updates. The 1GR has the same, or slightly more power than the 2GR. My 2000 Tacoma V6 gets 18 MPG overall. Doesn't matter if the AC is on or off. This is with a camper shell and Hankook off-road tires. If I put fancy Michelin SUV A/S tires and take the shell off, it could probably get 20 MPG, but it would lose that mall crawler look lol.
Scotty, I finally took your advice and I bought a 2011 Toyota Avalon Limited and I am going to sell my endless money pit 2008 Mercedes E-350. I wish that I knew about your channel before I bought the Mercedes. I probably put $9000 into a car that I paid $11,500 for two years ago. In 2005 I bought a new Saab 9-3. I bought it because it was the safest car at the time I could afford. Both in crash tests and real-world accidents Saabs were known for being very safe cars. I've witnessed two very bad accidents in my life (one high speed head-on, one T-bone), in both cases caused by one reckless (or possibly homicidal) driver that caused serious injuries to innocent people. After those experiences I decided that the most important factor to consider when buying a car is safety. (The Saab I bought in 2005 BTW is still on the road. It's had its fair share of problems but none of them so major that it didn't make sense to fix it.) As reliable as a Corolla or Civic is, if someone told me "you're going to be in a bad wreck today. You can drive either a Corolla or a Saab, which will it be?" I'd pick the Saab every day.
I Love my Reliable and Economical Toyota TACOMA TRUCK ( access cab automatic & 2 wheel drive) with 145,000 miles on it and Very Good Strong Little Truck.
I6's, V8's, V10's are the best engines. 3 cylinders are pretty good as well because they sound like mini V6's. Ironically Honda doesn't make any of those and my name is what it is
I have a 2018 Accord with the 1.5L turbo & my girlfriend has a 2017 CR-V with the same engine. So far, so good - but I change the oil every 4,500 miles just to be safe. My son has a 2013 Accord with a 2.4L non-turbo. 110k miles with no trouble at all.
I agree with Scotty about the V6 rather than the 4 cylinder but I think he could have pointed out that it also depends upon the weight of the vehicle. A heavy vehicle with a 4 cylinder, even a turbo 4 cylinder, is going to give you problems long before the V6. Btw....the best six cylinder engines IMHO is the in-line six cylinder overhead valve (not overhead cam). Lots of examples of in-line sixes that were great engines. Even some flat head in-line sixes. Also good engines.
@@310_Latchkey_kid we have a couple of those out back. I never saw one laugh once. All they do is eat and💩💩💩💩💩💩💩. Useless as an old BMW and cost ( vet) just as much.
Jaguar and other Chinese brands are made in China therefore they have the same quality. Following the same logic a Toyota made in the US and American manufacturers such as GM are the same quality (?) Asking for a friend
Yes I agree Scotty gave a bit of an unrelated, simplistic answer regarding Jaguar. Especially because the S-Type was based on the '90's BMW 5-series and mostly sold after Ford took over Jaguar from BMW. The petrol engines from Jaguar are still from Ford and the diesel engines are from Peugeot🤮. The automatic gearboxes are from ZF just like BMW and high end Chrysler models (V8 Chargers and the like). So those parts aren't the best but could still be worse. Good enough if it doesn't have to last an eternity. However a car has more parts than just an engine and gearbox and I don't know how good those are.
Yes do agree a naturally aspirated engine would always be better/affordable to own long term than a vehicle with a turbo. Saab and other brands in GM's portfolio that they failed to.. could be a topic Mr. Scotty can discuss in his other channel - autonauts garage.
Hi Scotty, I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, I have 2006 Yaris buy from new. I have problem the ABS light appears after changing tireriod. And the private services station already reset but in short moment appear again. What's happened?. Please help me. Thanks
Yep, but they were still pretty nice. The cheaper X-Type, however, is not as refined from my experience. I've started one that comes to my shop and it sounded like my coworker's 2000 Ford Taurus. The sound just penetrates into the interior and you can feel the engine. Maybe it just needs engine mounts.
@@seanthompson8071 I think it is a Mondeo. I'm just comparing it to the Taurus since it's mostly the same engine (3.0 Duratec) and the refinement quality is similar. The Jag should be more quiet and smooth than a Taurus.
I have a 2007 Hummer H3. The accessory light stays on after ignition is turned off, I have to open either the passenger door or back door to shut off everything. Whats the best way to correct. I'm sure its electrical but who do you trust ? The dealer or alarm installer ? Oh yeah it has 146,00 miles.
Scotty, it's not always true that less moving parts means the engine will last longer. You have to take engine design, hp,tq, car weight and wind coefficients ! You take a 3500 pound car with a 4 cylinder engine won't last as long as a 6 cylinder engine . A 2500 pound car probably with a 4 will last longer . And as far as 8 cylinder goes. You and I both know why someone buys a 8 cylinder car like that mustang. Reliability is always terrible and it's not the cars fault. Put that same engine in a pick-up or sedan and it will run forever.
Well now i know that i have a bad brake booster. Thanks Scotty. I never knew why the brake pedal was so stiff when the engine is off and the brake light came up a few times but i never knew why.
If it is ticking , smoking or knocking . Dont buy it .Ask to start it cold .Feel on the engine to see if its warm . The only ticking car I will buy is a flat tappet overhead cam one.
Hmmmm.....you know at one time a v8 was thought to be the strongest, a 6 cylinder, well ok if you didn’t want to pay the price for an 8. And a 4 banger? Well you wouldn’t even think of it! I still feel that way even considering Scottys wisdom. I’ve had 2 Ford Escapes (used) still have the second one as the first was written off, and both were v6 and all wheel drive. That was my priority when I was buying. I still feel a 6 lasts longer than the 4 banger and the 4 wheel drive is great in a northern climate. And the 240 hp that the 3 litre provides is appreciated.
Thanks! Great and informative video. I am currently in search of a pre-owned Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Diesel van. I have noted that Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans are known for offering a range of diesel engine options. I would be most appreciative if you could kindly provide your guidance on which engine choice would be most suitable for my intended usage. My plan involves embarking on extended journeys, including mountainous terrains, and it is worth mentioning that I do not anticipate requiring the van for any towing purposes aside from carrying bicycles. I genuinely thank you for your time and valuable insights.
In a longitudinal layout like in a 4Runner the V6 is better, though I4s are still ok in this layout. In a transverse layout like in a RAV4 the I4 is better. Transverse V6s and V8s are very difficult to work on and should be avoided.
What is the overall most economical car to buy if you are on a limited budget. I drive about 40K miles a year - mostly highway. I would like to look at cost of the car, shop cost, fuel economy, insurance
I always prefer the V6 engine, over the four-cylinder engine for smoothness, power and also, to keep vehicle speeds low in the city, around town, in the suburbs and communities, known as the metropolitan area and which is mostly on residential and commercial, major and non-major streets and to keep vehicle speeds high in the country and on road trips, which is mostly two-lane, non-divided and four-lane, divided highways and metropolitan and countryside freeways. For this purpose, what is a great vehicle for this pleasure, a 2017 Honda Odyssey EX-L eight passenger minivan or a 2009 Lexus ES 350 sedan? They both have the 3.5 L V6 engine, but the Odyssey has 248 horsepower and the regular six-speed automatic transmission and the ES 350 has 272 horsepower and the six-speed automatic transmission with sport mode (manual-shift). Also, they both have the same gas mileage and they are both FWD (front-wheel-drive), but I would prefer to go for the ES 350, over the Odyssey, because it has more power and it is a lot faster and more smoother. Do you have any more suggestions on other reliable and fuel-efficient vehicles? If so, please comment below. Thank you very much for your consideration.
You should do a Video about modern 3 cylinder engines someday. Ford, BMW and VW have some really interesting i3's. Probably the future of non-hybrid average Joe cars in europe and asia, maybe less so in the US.
Naturally aspirated engines with 6 cylinders, whether with an inline or v design are better than 4 cylinders with or without turbos. They will last longer, have more optimal smoothness and power compared to non turbos. I am willing to sacrifice gas efficiency for reliability with power.
Mr. Kilmer, a question: Isn't an engine with just old multi-valve technology, double overhead cams and fuel injection better than any of the new stuff they've come up lately to make the engines more powerful regardles the number of cylinders?
Haha get an old car with no computer system. I inherited a 71 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme from my mom. Beside sentimental value, is car worth fixing up?
SCOTTY I need help I need a suv for the winter and I've always wanted a Chevy tahoe. I'm to broke for the new ones but I was thinking about a 2007 the problem is most of them have 200,000 miles but I'm thinking I can get it for 5 or 6 grand what are your thoughts and thanks for the videos 🙂
>Nick Goodwin: 07 Tahoe with 200,000 would be 5 or 6 grand pissed down the toilet. A/C problems, Engine Lifter problems causing ticking noises, transfer case failure, transmission problems, costly fuel pump replacements, electrical problems. You'll spend more than 5 or 6 grand on repairs for that thing.

I love my 292 and also my 300straight 6
In my opinion inline 4 or straight 4 is better to work on based on my experience.
Hey Scotty!
hello!
Those laughing horses always crack me up! 😄
Hey honey
@@310_Latchkey_kid we have a couple of those out back. I never saw one laugh once. All they do is eat and💩💩💩💩💩💩💩. Useless as an old BMW and cost ( vet) just as much.
Jaguar and other Chinese brands are made in China therefore they have the same quality.
Following the same logic a Toyota made in the US and American manufacturers such as GM are the same quality (?) Asking for a friend
Most Toyota vehicles in the USA are built here. So yes the quality it better than GM.
@@WALTERBROADDUS Read my comment again, digest it, and understand it before commenting some unrelated nonsense.
I believe Toyota's V8's are all made in the US. And they seem to hold up well, but are more expensive to maintain.
Isn't the Toyota V8 the old 5.7 from GM?
Yes do agree a naturally aspirated engine would always be better/affordable to own long term than a vehicle with a turbo.
Saab and other brands in GM's portfolio that they failed to.. could be a topic Mr. Scotty can discuss in his other channel - autonauts garage.
I prever a straight 6 as it is so smooth it feels like you run it on caramel.
I have a4 cylinder for 2008 Ford Fusion never had problem but back then are better than the new ones I thing
Hi Scotty, I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, I have 2006 Yaris buy from new. I have problem the ABS light appears after changing tireriod. And the private services station already reset but in short moment appear again. What's happened?. Please help me. Thanks
4 for running around 8 for performance no others 🤘
Love 💕 you’re show great job mate from Australia 🇦🇺 . ⭐️
Anything that only beats itself up in one direction is bound to last longer.
I drove a 1986 Saab 900s with a manual transmission for years. It drove like a tank :D
I like to pack up the Hash Pipe with Rocky and get all schmoked up while watching the Scotty Kilmers videos.
unstablebobgable - Nobody cares
Isn't a Jaguar S-Type really a Ford back from the days when ford owned the company?
Yep, but they were still pretty nice. The cheaper X-Type, however, is not as refined from my experience. I've started one that comes to my shop and it sounded like my coworker's 2000 Ford Taurus. The sound just penetrates into the interior and you can feel the engine. Maybe it just needs engine mounts.
@@Dcc357 OK, so the S-Type is based on the US Ford 500 (Taurus)? I thought the X-Type was based on the Euro Ford Mondeo.
Love the '67 Mercury Cougar one of my favorite cars.
Scotty, you're the most inspiring TH-camr to me. After watching your videos I made my TH-cam videos very effective.
I have a 2016 Buick Encore that's great. Built for a turbo from the ground up so it will last.
I got a VVT-i V4 Corolla, no problem just timely service every after 3000km..
I had a tracker that I loved and loved. The thing is off road they over heat easily.
Inline 6 cilinders are naturally balanced. So it's the best principle.
My old straight 6 engine was amazing. You couldn't kill it. However my V-6, the worst.
Hey Scotty .I think your wrong about the Mercury Cougar being an upscale Mustang. I believe it was Mercury’s version of theT bird,
More great advice from Scotty, thank you....YEE YEE
BMW Reihensechszylinder ♥️
You need countering weights for any V shape engine. Inline 6 engines is as smooth as it gets.
Scotty senpai
You should do a Video about modern 3 cylinder engines someday. Ford, BMW and VW have some really interesting i3's. Probably the future of non-hybrid average Joe cars in europe and asia, maybe less so in the US.
seen multiple Jag S Type's on craigslist with over 200k miles...v6 and v8 alike..
Naturally aspirated engines with 6 cylinders, whether with an inline or v design are better than 4 cylinders with or without turbos. They will last longer, have more optimal smoothness and power compared to non turbos. I am willing to sacrifice gas efficiency for reliability with power.
Get Blue Devil and put it into the oil. It's awesome stuff
Scotty, do a video of Honda as you did for Toyota
I think vs series should be made more, and put on the Autonauts Garage
channel.
I actually like my 5 cylinder!
Scotty what do u think about Toyota Carmy crystal light v6
So like which ones better
Mr. Kilmer, a question: Isn't an engine with just old multi-valve technology, double overhead cams and fuel injection better than any of the new stuff they've come up lately to make the engines more powerful regardles the number of cylinders?
Hey Scotty, purely in terms of ease of maintenance, would you rather work on a FWD or RWD, automatic or manual vehicle given similar reliability?
I can tell you that - RWD!!!
Haha get an old car with no computer system. I inherited a 71 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme from my mom. Beside sentimental value, is car worth fixing up?
Honestly? You never make a profit on the time and money spent. It's also not as collector popular as other brands.
When you say you need a SUV, have you considered a wagon instead? Subaru AWD cars perform year around.
@@WALTERBROADDUS they do, but watch out for head gasket issues.
love you scotty
Choose the V6 petrol engine if you don't mind how hard to change the spark plugs
