You know how I’m envisioning this for my small apartment? I keep a Mac Mini at home, since I rarely use the computer anyway. For times I do need the computer I have access to one by pulling out my iPad! This way I can still do things like download files to flash drives.
Omg this setup will work great for me!!

  • @Carolyne_games

To me what's really cool about this setup is that if you hide the Mac mini away, it almost seems like macOS is running as an App on the iPad. Pretty amazing.

If you’re going to go this route, there’s also a setting in MacOS to unlock with Apple Watch, rather than a password. It does require you to be very deep into the apple ecosystem, but there are some use cases where that might work for you. Great video, Jonathan!

The thing is that mac os is build to work only on x86 processor which is different than mobile processor architure ARM. Hance if you see a geekbench score you might see a12 is faster than the i7 or i5 but thats not the case they are not even comparable as their whole architure on which they are build is different.
And if apple wants to put macos on the ipad it simply wont work they would have to put in a x86 processor inside the tablet for it to work.

It looks great, and how you're using it really hits home how much better the iPad Pro experience would be with Mac OS. I think it's time for Apple to take iPad down the route of the Surface Pro. As a first gen iPad Pro owner who LOVES the device, the biggest thing holding it back is iOS. Either create a harmonized iOS/Mac OS hybrid solution, or bridge the gap entirely with Mac OS, and THEN we can talk about replacing our computers.

    • @litjellyfish
      @litjellyfish 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Broseph Stalin read my reply. I tested this years back and Mac OS do not give any extra production value used with touch compared to used with mouse or touch pad.
Let MacOS be used how it was designed and let iOS be used as it was designed
If you really want a touch screen for MacOS well buy a touch screen for your MacOS device. No need to get an iPad for that.

There are apps for doing this exact thing. Such as Duet Display or iDisplay. They work over USB a whole lot better than wifi. For anyone who has a ipad+mac of some sort weither its a mini or type of macbook. Just stay clear of such apps if your on Android/Windows tho as those are forced to use wifi and the latency sucks MAJORLY. You litterally have to drop them to the lowest resolution and picture quality to the vbare minimun just to get usable latency out of them and then the picture is just a blocky mess. Anything higher and the latency is litterally secs and just unusable.

So it won’t work anywhere, but your house or a friends house or at work if your office has WiFi and then what extra functionality do you get for the $800-$1000? A touch screen and stylus? Have you seen the Surface Studio? Or any surface product? The $500 Surface go has a touch screen and can be connected to another display and one that costs substantially less than an iPad and Mac Mini together.

I mean they even said the new iPads can replace your laptop/computer, but yet the iPads are using a mobile OS with limited functions comparing to computers/laptops. Apple should realise if they want iPads to replace people’s laptops/computers they need to have Mac OS on the iPad. I bought this device based on what I saw in this video, and there is a drawback you don't mention. If you have a main monitor and want to mirror that display, the resolution must match on both devices, which is highly unlikely. So you will either end up with a weird looking ipad screen, or a weird looking monitor. The only solution is to mirror it at the ipad resolution and just plan on not using the other display (for example using in another room). Still debating on whether or not to keep it...

All you need is the Duet Display app. It can mirror and use the Apple Pencil like a Wacom tablet, or it can be used as a 3rd separate desktop. It also places the MacBook’s Touch Bar on the iPad screen if you want it. It also works with Windows. I’m kinda missing the excitement of this video. Thought this was common knowledge. I can't believe you're calling the iPad a mere display.
Not only could you use it outside it being just a display, the iPad's screen is better than most screens out there, 2k res, 120hz refresh rate, multi-touch screen + Apple pencil, something you couldn't use on a Mac before, even though a touchscreen Mac is worth it, you still have the full iOS experience as well, you literally the best of both worlds and an incredible mix of the two, this truly makes it the in-between device it should've been all along.
So no, it's not just a display.

+Miguel Rodriguez I rather pay 1k for an iPad that already has an incredible screen and benefit from its many functions than to pay the same amount for a slightly larger display that has no other functions than being a mere display.

He states "...don't go out and buy and iPad just to use as a monitor for your mac mini". The video is just showcasing an interesting product that many might find useful if they already have both devices.

this is freaking magical! I always wondered what if you could use an iPad as an external display for another machine, and now we know!!! mind=blown!

For all you saying this is impractical it depends on what you are doing. If you dominantly want the iPad but have the occasional need for a “real” computer for certain functions, processing power, or certain desktop only programs this is a potentially logical set up. It is not just using the iPad as a monitor and not a tablet, it is allowing for the use of both in their proper situations. Is this for everyone? Definitely not. Will it work for some? Theoretically yes.

Couldn't you just buy a cheaper touch screen external monitor, strap that to a raspberry pi then stream your mac to it? Using VNC isn't exactly revolutionary and there are some far cheaper ways to doing this. What I was really hoping to see is Mac os running natively on the Ipad's processor, not just streamed from a mac.

My 10-year-old MacBook Pro finally needed to be replaced, and in my opinion, the circumstances involving the timing for shopping for a new Apple computer couldn’t be more challenging.
With the introduction of the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9, it has created a never-before-seen comparison model to the standard laptop. In fact, regarding the hardware, it’s not merely comparable, but dominating, based on benchmark scores, screen quality, touch interface, and form factor. So the SOLE drawback, is not being able to run MacOS. There is no doubt in my mind that the iPad Pro represents the future of mobile computing, and I’m positive that iOS 13 for the iPad, will be one more step forward in bridging the gap between iOS and MacOS. But there are just certain tasks, like configuring my home NAS, file directories, media server, etc., that either can’t be done on iOS, or just require too many workarounds to make it a pleasant experience.
So, after an exhausting degree of research and internal debate, I made the tough decision to just stick with purchasing the $1800 13" MacBook Pro, as I could not hedge my bet that future software updates would make the iPad Pro everything that I need. Even though 90% of my day-to-day tasks could be handled by the iPad, I just couldn’t do without that remaining 10% MacOS functionality.
….then I happened to catch YOUR TH-cam video, describing the Luna Display…..and to be completely honest, my brain IMPLODED🤯.
My entire strategy changed instantly, due also in part to the recent update to the Mac Mini, which even with the base $799 configuration, surpasses the 2018 13” MacBook Pro benchmark Single-Core score, and is very comparable on the Multi-Core Score. It has the more powerful DDR4 SDRAM since it’s a desktop, and is pretty easy to upgrade.
Before I got too excited, the next comparison came down to price:
2018 13” MacBook Pro with Touch Bar $1799
    + Apple Care+ $269
    = $2068
    2018 12.9 iPad Pro 256GB $1149
    + Apple Care+ $129
    + 2018 Mac Mini $799
+ IVSO Keyboard Folio case $50
    = $2127
(I excluded the cost of the Apple Pencil in the direct cost comparison, since it’s not an accessory that can be utilized by the MacBook)
Bottom line…this turned my decision from a challenge, to a no-brainer.
The iPad Pro/Mac Mini Combo provides me the following advantages over the MacBook Pro:
    • Better Screen
    • Better Processor x(2)
    • Better battery life
    • Future Proofing
    • Better Portability
    • Touch Screen operability
    • All-in-one functionality in productivity, combining simultaneous iOS and MacOS operability on the same device
    • Apple Pencil support
I cannot emphasize enough, that this is ALL credited to the Luna Display. I am currently typing this out on my my iPad’s connected keyboard in MacOS, while sitting outside on my patio, using a bluetooth mouse that is connected via USB to my MacMini sitting inside. This is the dream setup. In the immortal words from LOTR….“Even the smallest dongle can change the course of the future”.
