TY! Your solution is great for when a monitor fails (or gets fiddly) and you need backup. But it’s even better for headless Mac Mini (or Studio) setup and maintenance. Furthermore, this is great to make Mac Mini/Studio travel-worthy… without some (huge or fiddly mini) monitor. I already have an iPad so using it makes all the sense in the world, and reduces extra gear (like buying/carrying a monitor just to get a headless computer running). Thank you!
Actually this how I Mac compute and I love it. I use my iPad Pro as the main and only display for my headless M1 Mac mini with wireless sidecar via VNC. I wish Apple made this an easier out of the box connection. For example, a simple solution would be in Mission Control on the iPad Pro, I should be able to tap Screen Mirroring and “PULL” the Mac mini “screen” to my iPad if it’s on the same iCloud account and network. To start using my current setup, first I had to connect my Mac mini to my HDMI TV since I don’t have a monitor and I had to connect a mouse and a keyboard, but once set up to do all the necessary setup, I no longer need the mouse, keyboard or display to operate my Mac. I just launch VNC on my iPad Pro, type in my password and my Mac mini display shows up on my iPad and I can do all my my computing I need to. Luckily i don’t need to do anything pro and require fine touch point editing, the Mac is better at batch processing and batch editing like adding tags in the photo app and file management. Also, some BitTorrent archiving and backing-up to my personal iCloud. I wouldn’t mind if to get MacOS on the iPad Pro, Apple choose this route, wired or wireless as A Main use case instead of only as an alternate use case as it is now. Give us faster 1:1 response time. When connected, the Mac OS and the iPadOS merge into one cohesive experience instead of a mirroring experience, doubling the processing while exchanging data, in a synchronize experience. I’m sure this is hard to do because a risk of data loss for unexpected Disconnection either wire or Wireless. But I’m sure Apple can make it a great user experience and they will get the sale of a Mac computer like the Mac mini or the Mac studio or whatever and the sale of iPad Pro for people who want to compute this way. An individual Mac experience as it is now, an individual iPadOS experience as it is now, and a new unique combine computing experience for those who want macOS on iPad Pro hardware. I’ve suggested this use case in Apple feedback for years, but it seems to be falling in deaf ears, so I guess the more people who request this type of computing experience of a combine macOS and iPad hardware experience would have to file their own feedback suggestion also. My Mac mini is pretty much in one location at home because it connected to multiple external hard drives but I can use my iPad Pro wirelessly to Mac computer. But I like your solutions with the HDMI connection dongle, the wireless mouse and the Bluetooth keyboard. Whenever I get a new Mac mini with more internal hard drive space I’ll be able to eliminate the external hard drives and I will have more flexibility of a portable Mac mini all self-contained that I can physically connect to my iPad Pro and I have even greater best of both worlds of macOS and iPadOS and portability.
Interesting, so coupled with VNC sidecar will work headless? The new Mac minis have thunderbolt ports will that be able to get use the data for display?

You first load a free app on the mini, open it, open the app on your iPad and it automatically detects it and done! I just got it last week to turn my 2017 iMac into a primary screen for the mini when I’m at home. So with one tiny device I saved my beautiful 27” screen from oblivion and have both an iPad AND a MacOS screen for the mini. Mac Continuity automatically shares the keyboard and mouse across devices also without wires. $79 one time price and no subscriptions. Very cost effective and efficient powerhouse flexible system! 😊🎉

That’s a great use of a Mini! I like laptops but this is a pretty good pen/touch Mac (Macbooks with touch/pen don’t really exist in any official capacity)
With the new much smaller Mac mini coming soon, this solution is even more viable for portability. I Have iPad Pro and on occasions when you need full Mac operating system. I just have a tiny black box to carry. It seems the foldable key board and portable track pad could be used on both devices. I don’t like the iPad keyboards, iPads have a keyboard built in. Just more weight. What I’m I missing? Is it just better to buy MacBook Pro, then I have battery.
@@JeffKellyMedia the MacBook Pro definitely a good option - this solution is more “occasional” than something that you would want to use continuously - although it is possible. Power on the iPad would be an issue for long periods of use, but there’s the possibility of an adapter for that too! I think I’ll do a quick video on that setup. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video and solution. I have a new mac mini and older Lightning iPad so I need a USB-3 HDMI input adapter with Lightning connector. Having trouble locating one. Any suggestions where I might look. Thanks.
some older ipads do not have a setting to never go to sleep. My 9.7 max stay awake if no activity is 30 minutes. Annoying to the point, I would not want to use it.
So I have been researching this very thing and have seen several methods to do this from several TH-cam channels. I am interested as well because I do photo editing and use Lightroom and Photoshop frequently. I needed some more on the go however I did try this as described in this video and what I found is that I would lose signal, and my screen would look like the old TVs where you can adjust the verticals in a horizontals, it was out of adjustment and couldn’t figure out how to fix it. I looked at two other options, the first I found that there was a severe lag time from operating my mouse or keyboard to the output device. The second was a Pay software and I didn’t think $80 was worth it. The last option I tried is to use the proprietary Mac software for screen sharing, which works very well however, the full desktop version of Lightroom or Photoshop requires a lot of screen area to control the different options available.
@@NestoRides514 I haven’t used this for photo editing (although there is a native Lightroom App for the iPad you may wish to look at) The “test” pattern should not show up with CAMO Studio (free) - it may be a time out? This is the solution I’ve been using and it has been working well.

I haven’t found one … yet! 😀 The thing is to check the compatibility of the software with your model of iPad as well. CAMO Studio doesn’t work with every iPad
It depends on the keyboard - if it’s Bluetooth then yes. There are even some keyboards that can pair to multiple devices, so you could pair with the iPad AND the Mac Mini and switch between them. I have one somewhere and will test this - great idea!
Does it require an adapter? I have a hdmi to usb-c cable (HDMI out from MacMini directly into the USB-C port on IPad) and Camo doesn’t recognize the “capture card” it just says “none” in the drop down. OK just tried it with an adapter and it still doesn’t work…. Is there a minimum hardware version for the Mac mini? Mine is from 2012… Does it need a silicon M series?
There is another way. A bus powered wifi router. You can velcro it onto to the Mac mini. Then use screen sharing to connect to the Mac mini. I use this to connect to MainStage on the Mac mini from iPad.
Is it possible to connect a video capture card to an iPad with a lightning connector? I want to use my ipad 9th generation as the sole monitor for my Mac mini.
This is a very good solution, and it has helped me a lot. However, I still want to ask if there is a way to solve the current top and bottom black bars in the Como studio?
The short answer is yes. However, the longer answer is that the MacBook Air won’t run the software I demonstrate in this video. So you would need to use different software. The HDMI Input cable still works on a desktop. This is a video I can make. It’s something that I find handy for tutorials and such. So I’ll get that into my schedule to film. It won’t be a MacBook Air (I don’t have one), but I do have an older 2015 MacBook somewhere around here that I can use to demo.
Do we need to do a first time configuration with the mac mini connected to a monitor first before we can use camo studio to connect the mac mini to the ipad ?
Hi, superb! I don’t know this can be done. But why can’t you use the iPod keyboard and trackpad with Continuity feature as the mac keyboard? They are on the same wifi and Apple id right?
@@5Bird5 I haven’t tested that - so I can’t say 100% The first step would be to see if CAMO Studio lists your model of iPad as one it runs on. I’d CAMO Studio does run on it, then the next step would be to find an HDMI capture cable with a lightning adapter.
This is great if you already have the iPad and Mac Mini. An Air is basically a complete system in one - so it sort of depends on how you intend to use things and what you may already have.
Great video and great concept! One question: Do you use Camo Studio rather than using Apple Sidecar because it is better or (perhaps) because your iPad doesn't support Sidecar? Thank you!
Good question! Sidecar is when you want to use your iPad as a second monitor. In this set up, I want to use my iPad as the main (and only) monitor. So that’s how CAMO Studio helps.
Just so you’re all aware, using an iPad you can only get a refresh rate of 60 Hz. So if you want to get 90 or 120 frames per second with an iPad Pro, it’s not possible. The reason is because you need to use a video capture card like he does in the video and currently video capture cards only support up to 60 frames per second. so yes this is all great, but personally I want to be able to utilise the 120 frames capable of my Mac mini. Other than that good video.

THANK YOU! I have been slamming my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get a portable screen for my Mac mini, when I have an iPad Pro 5th gen 12 inch I use more than the mini. My question is. The adaptor you should allows the hdmi to go into the iPad BUT how do I then charge the iPad? Because it runs down so very fast.
I figured out how to charge and plug in the video capture card. But on camp when I click external video source then go to click device it doesn’t recognize the capture card. The iPad saw it right away. But the app doesn’t. I’m so confused and I know it is staring me in the face I just cannot see it.
Does it charge the iPad as you use it? or does it rain the battery? what accessories can you use to have the iPad connected as your screen and charge at the same time
Sir the portable keyboard is not linked ; could you please reply with a link ; if you have suggestion how to use MacBook as a screen for the Mac mini please let me know the cable and software to use
i dont know if the question is dumb, but if i connect my ipad via hdmi->usb c to my windows laptop, it should also work with camo studio as a second display, right? Great Video
Not dumb at all! It won’t work exactly like that - you need the input cable - so the one I link in the description. However, it can work and I’ll do a video on that for everyone
This would work well with the new M4 Mac mini which is substantially smaller. Can’t you use sidecar to do this? Or because it has to boot and you can’t get sidecar running is the issue before login. Also I think display data should go through thunderbolt ports, are the adapter necessary? I am contemplating on a Mac mini instead of a MacBook Pro this time, I used to use a SFF box (ATI 9700 gpu) and a foldable LCD 2 decades ago as my portable desktop. This setup might work for me as I have already an iPad Pro.
Does the iPad have to be a Pro version? I have an 8th gen iPad and a Mac mini 2017.. I'm guessing that the Mac mini only needs an HDMI output. It's the iPad that has to have the horsepower (and correct port for the interface). I'm also guessing that most devices with an HDMI output might work? DVD player? Streaming device?

Great video, Frank! Thanks! I'm just wondering if you can use SIDECAR simultaneously with your set-up.
I haven’t tied that - but now it’s on my list!
I'm having the same issue and I have a Mac mini m2 pro
@@suzubraz any joy yet linking the m2 and ipad yet? Am wanting to try the same thing.
Same issue here. Captured card is not recognized
4:38 it’s not quite full screen can you use it in 4:3 aspect ratio?
Such a great video! Question.. does it HAVE to be a capture card? Could I simply use a usb c to hdmi cable with camo ? How about latency? Any issues ?
@@techmap4191 it does need to be the capture card - it requires the INPUT direction. Fortunately, they are reasonably priced - I linked to one below.
I haven’t been able to get those gone - yet. I’m trying to figure out a way by changing the display properties on the Mini.
@@LearningandTechnology thanks for help !
Interesting setup! Would it also work using the MacBook Air as screen ? (I was planning buying MBA anyway, though I have no need for a new IPad (Air)
Can you just use the magic keyboard connected to your iPad instead of having to use the extra keyboard and mouse ?
Did you ever find out because I am curious to know also
I use both Magic Keyboard and trackpad with my IPad…but you have to disconnect them from the mac, unfortunately
Thank you for sharing this information!! That’s all I needed to know 🙌🏻
If you can set your output to 4:3 ratio, then you can take advantage of a full iPad screen (rather than have black bars top and bottom)
Now you can improve this setup with the newest mac mini m4!
Magic Keyboard work with mac mini ?
Do you mean the iPad one? No.
@@LearningandTechnology yes with ipad one , thank you
@@i3bady9 ah… sadly not. It would be nice. I just use the tiny folding one - it’s okay.
Great video! Thank you!
Do we need to do a first time configuration with the mac mini connected to a monitor first before we can use camo studio to connect the mac mini to the ipad ?
Nope! I used this video to connect my brand new Mac mini up to my iPad Pro and it worked instantly. I used the iPad to set up the Mac mini!
Hi, superb! I don’t know this can be done. But why can’t you use the iPod keyboard and trackpad with Continuity feature as the mac keyboard? They are on the same wifi and Apple id right?
Actually this should work
This is a great solution for working from bed - I have my ipad mounted on an arm over my head, split keyboard by my sides. My bad back thanks you!
Lots of wisdom in this channel 👌🙌
I have an older iPad with lightning connector. I presume that I could use a video capture card into the camera connector (USB - lightning)?
@@5Bird5 I haven’t tested that - so I can’t say 100%
The first step would be to see if CAMO Studio lists your model of iPad as one it runs on. I’d CAMO Studio does run on it, then the next step would be to find an HDMI capture cable with a lightning adapter.
@@LearningandTechnology Thank you!
@@5Bird5 no problem - happy to help. Make sure you look for the HDMI INPUT adapter - the output one will not work.
Genius thanks! I'm thinking of a MacBook Air but maybe I'll do this instead!
@@LearningandTechnology Thank you!
Excellent presentation… thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Caut you use the magic keyboard to type on mac?
Hey hey ,, awesome well presented info,, was just wondering if
1. it’s possible to draw directly on the iPad screen , using the Apple Pencil
2. Also if softwares like toonboom can be installed on the Mac mini m2 and worked on ! Drawn etc on the iPad screen ( of course saved on Mac mini) that WOULD BE AWESOME …
Been thinking about this ..and walla I see your awesome video here 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Sadly, the iPad in this scenario is strictly a one-way display. It doesn’t feed “back” to the Mac Mini.
@@LearningandTechnology appreciate timely reply sir, I had a feeling it wouldn’t work ..saved me from buying up stuff on impulse 😅,, installing toonboom on a regular laptop and working with a regular Wacom tab would do the job just fine for me just fine 🙏
@@storyboardman9459 if you have the Wacom tablet already then that’s a fantastic choice.
Do you recommend powerbanks if there are no wall/power outlet nearby
It seems like a very good solution to me, I bought a cable on one end that has USB C and the other HDMI to connect to a mini Mac, but it doesn't give me an option, after I chose "external video", no device show up.
The cable you need is the one I link to in the description (it’s not expensive) - it has for input rather than output.
Does it charge the iPad as you use it? or does it rain the battery? what accessories can you use to have the iPad connected as your screen and charge at the same time
I was wondering the same thing. Is the fix as simple as just connecting with a USB-C to USB-C cable?
Sir the portable keyboard is not linked ; could you please reply with a link ; if you have suggestion how to use MacBook as a screen for the Mac mini please let me know the cable and software to use
Would an hdmi adapter to usb c cable work going straight from Mac mini to iPad ?
No - you would need the INPUT cable in the link I pinned to the first comment. It's not very costly, but does allow INPUT to the iPad
i dont know if the question is dumb, but if i connect my ipad via hdmi->usb c to my windows laptop, it should also work with camo studio as a second display, right? Great Video
Not dumb at all!
It won’t work exactly like that - you need the input cable - so the one I link in the description. However, it can work and I’ll do a video on that for everyone
It works great!
I made a video for you

question for you with the new mac mini due to come out i was thinking of ditching my lap top and replacing it with the latest iPad good or bad move...
Does it work with windows and nice vid
@@niichan3291 it does - I did a video showing it with Windows as well. Basically the same setup.
Ultimate portability to me would be if the ipad would be a full computer like with the microsoft surface tablets.
That would be great. I have some videos on remote access with the iPad that “sort of” let you use other Operating Systems with the iPad
Can you KVM the iPad without keyboard and mouse to Mac Mini? I’d like to do that.
Thank you for the app recommendation.
@@mekman4 You’re very welcome - hope you have fun!
Thank you for the like!
@@LearningandTechnology I will! Take care!
THIS IS AWESOME 👏 THANK YOU
Can we use the keyboard that’s connected to ipad to control the mac mini? That would make it a real mac book killer.
That would be awesome indeed - but the Magic Keyboard does not have this magic :)
A Bluetooth keyboard is the way to go this this setup.
Thank you!! Does it support HDR brightness of the Mini LED-Display of the 13“ iPad for color grading of HDR Video in Final Cut?
I haven't tried that - I'm not a Final Cut user - so I'm not quite sure about that :)
@@LearningandTechnology Okay, thank you. Is there any way to get the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad‘s inputs into the Mac? Than we would almost have the full macOS on iPad experience.
Hey can a usb c to lightning work on my 5th gen iPad? Or is the display cables needed?
@@RishabhManna you do need the input cable - but I’m. It sure if it can be adapted to lightening. The CAMO Studio software is also required and it may not run on older iPads.
@@LearningandTechnology got it. Thankyou for your inputs.
Hi there sir. Ur video helps me a lot to use my ipad as monitor to my mac mini. However after logging I cannot access my files. Did I miss something sir?
I mean i cannot work on my files
@@kimihzainah the iPad is just acting as a monitor. You should be able to work on your files as you normally would.
Can you change the Mac’s aspect ratio to fill the iPad screen with no black bars?
It doesn’t give me the opinion to choose the capture card. What can you do in that case?
Is there a similar setup which can be used for macbook [i have an old intel mac which has become sluggish] , so is there a way to use macbook display, trackpad and keyboard with mac mini ?
Can you use the Apple Pencil on the iPad well it’s being used as a monitor? For example can it be used like a Wacom tablet with the Mac mini well using a program like photoshop?
I bought the same one but it still doesn't detect the Mac mini, do you have a more exact description of the cable? thanks for your help
I have a link in the description to the exact one I’m using. It has to be HDMI capture
You can do this with Sidecar wired via thunderbolt or over the same internet connect :-)
@@NicholasOwen-g4s that is somewhat true 😀 Sidecar is useful, but often assumes you are using your iPad as an additional monitor - not the primary display.
Soo neat! it works and works well thank you :)
Awesome 😎
Hi! Its posible the combination with mac mini late 2014 with iPad mini 6?
Dang. Wish I had seen this a month ago!
