    There are professional blues/rock/folk guitars out there with Grammy’s and multi platinum selling albums and million dollar production companies who don’t capture the same feel that you do in your back room with your hands on some vintage gear and a handicam

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Wow, I'm glad you can hear it on a over compressed TH-cam video. It sounds amazing in the room but it is definitely difficult to capture the sound.

    Great playing ! This just confirms the magical powers of the mighty 59’ Bassman. People complain about the 10k price tag. But that will be a bargain compared to how much they will sell for 10 years from now. Probably the best of all time as far as holy grail strat setups goes

    • @millstap
      @millstap  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you can still find them for cheaper if you hunt around. It is important to have some knowledge of amp repair when you buy one unless you have a great, trustworthy amp tech at your disposal. Any old amp is going to need some work but once you get them going, they're good for another 50 years as long as we can get the tubes.

      millstap , you have motivated me to order one for my next build!

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can hardly play my vintage Strats anymore because I don't like the way the strings bend anymore. If you don't bend strings a lot then you may not get much benefit except that the bass strings do sound bigger and better.

    • @onlyfromadistance7326
      @onlyfromadistance7326 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      millstap , is it the neck radius you dont like. The neck im considering ordering is a compound radius of 10"-16". Would really appreciate your input.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the radius is nice on the vintage ones, 7.25". It is the shorter length of the plain strings that makes them bend quicker. You get used to it without noticing it until you play a standard headstock. I think the Nash Hendrix Strat has a 10" radius which is about as flat as I like. The compound radius should be fine for bending. I think one of my vintage Strats probably has a little bit of compound radius to it. It was originally refretted by Joe Glaser in Nashville and he mentioned compounding it. But, it has been refretted since with EVO Gold frets.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for that. I do try to be myself. I play mainly by ear which is difficult for learning the really technical stuff you see a lot of players do. I play from feel and enjoy whatever comes out just as long as I feel it. Fronting a band (I've learned in my wise old age) requires a decent singing voice and being able to sing and play at the same time. There are a few musicians that survived without singing. My ideal combo would be three piece with preferably a bass player that could sing like they did in Cream. And even then, Eric shared the vocals. I remember watching Kenny Wayne Shepherd years ago and thinking it was strange to see him as the guitar player while Noah Hunt fronted the band. Now, Kenny sings a lot in his band and Noah still does the older songs that he sang on.

      Thank you for the comment. I don't know how I missed this one. Here is a good source explaining different preamp tube gain factors. I use a 5751 in both of my Tweed Bassman amps. I just like the sound but the 6072 (low noise 12AY7) also sounds good. I used the 6072 for years until someone suggested I try the 5751. By the way, it is best to get triple mica 5751 to ensure that they are not microphonic. Microphonic tubes are pretty much useless and there are many tubes that have that problem. You get great tone with your rig millstap! Was wondering if you would give me some advice on pickups and volume & tone pots? Im playing a mexi strat and looking to upgrade to better pickups. Looking for snappy clear tone in the 2 and 4 positions. Also a nice fat clear tone in the neck. Those positions are really all i use. Also... do you know if i should change vol/tone pots with new pickups? Thanks in advance.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey LP, I don't think you need to change the pots unless they are worn out. I have some cheap Tiawan Alpha pots in some of my equipment and they are fine. I've discussed this with one manufacturer and he thinks they are fine. In fact, he has been disappointed with the new CTS pots. A lot of them are not even within 20% of what they are supposed to be. The ohm rating will make a difference in their response. Most Fenders use 250K pots. One of the ones on my old vintage Strat was measuring 321K so I replaced it. It gave the pickups a little more treble when I put in a 250K pot. The pickups were dark sounding so the treble was welcome. Unfortunately, picking pickups is such a personal thing. And, each set of pickups will sound differently in different guitars. If you don't want to spend a lot of money experimenting, I would say stick with the more experienced boutique winders like Lollar and Fralin. There are others I cannot think of now. I have Lollar flat poles in my Nash Hendrix Strat and they nail a certain Hendrix tone of the late '60's. I have some original Abigail Ybarra wound 1964 pickups in my Strat and they sound great too but nothing really better than some of the new production pickups out there. Buddy Guy uses the Vintage Noiseless Strat pickups in all of his guitars. I would like to have one Strat with those. That might be my next purchase. They have a distinct sound that I like but some people may not like it. Plus, they are very quiet. I've used Rumpelstiltskin's pups and they are great too. There are too many to mention here. You can always sell them on ebay and lose a little money but at least you can experiment without much cost.

      I should better document what I use. I'm guessing a little but it was probably using quite a few effects. I could have been going through a Vibe-Baby in cancel mode, then to a Dunlop Mini Fuzz Face (FFM2), then to the Area 51 wah-wah, the to a Fulltone OCD, and I can hear the MXR Carbon Copy too. I usually have the volumes on the effects pretty high, and turn my guitar down between 4 and 8 depending how clean I want it. I am sure glad I cleaned my room. What a mess it was back then.

    Ah man, sounds epic. What pickups do you have installed, and from your others which ones do you find you gravitate to? I'm looking to replace the noiseless pups in my Strat Plus but I am torn between the low end rumble and warmth of black bottom pickups, and the clean chime and clarity magic of grey bottom pickups! I never know if either can be EQ'd to fake the other...i know the answer is to get BOTH haha but such is life..

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Floyd, sorry I took so long. I've been remodeling my kitchen and got behind on TH-cam. I should keep better track of pickups. I've switched them quite a bit in a few of guitars over that past few years. This might be the original Lollar Dirty Blonde set with flat poles or it could be Rumpelstiltskin Experience pups with vintage left handed reverse stagger (left handed stagger flipped over to righty). The Rumpels are in it now. I do have a vintage set of black bottoms and grey bottoms. I love them all. You are right, get them all eventually. They all react differently to the same amp like this Bassman. My vintage 1966 grey bottoms don't have quite the clarity that you might like, maybe from the aging process. There are so many new pickups out there that sound great. For Hendrix, pickups with clarity and clean chime probably work best for the late '60's stuff. You need a Bassman amp or clean 100w Marshall with lots of bass to make them sound amazing. It just depends on what mood you are in. Right now, I only play this Nash left handed Strat with the Experience pickups. I love the left handed guitar. Even if I wasn't playing Hendrix, I would always have a guitar with a reverse big Fender headstock. They play better than the standard. It's a feel thing when bending the plain strings and the wound strings sound much better and clear.

    • @floydthebarber71
      @floydthebarber71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      millstap awesome, I appreciate the reply! Yeah I only have one strat at the moment and I guess the answer to everything is just buy anther guitar haha! I'm considering Slider's pickups which really do sound like magic, his 59s sound untouchable and the 69s are incredible too, but very neutral which I like. Also Bare Knuckles Mother's Milk pickups sound amazing for Woodstock Hendrix tones....I simply cannot decide between 59s or 69s tone, I hope when I finally do that they can be EQ'd to the mimic the other when I feel like it, until the inevitable next guitar arrives.... Cheers thanks again

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @millstap
      @millstap  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is the Nash. You mean the higher frets at the body. It makes it almost impossible to play up there. It gives you a whole other level of respect for the size of Jimi's hands. He played up there with ease. I cannot play past the G position.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a Hot Rod DeVille 410 and played it for years. I sold it right when I starting collecting vintage amps. I really don't care for the multi-channel amps because they rely on preamp tube distortion instead of power tube distortion of the old single channel amps. The '59 reissue is not an exact replica of the original Bassman. It probably sounds a little closer to an original Bassman than the DeVille. The DeVille is a nice amp and used a lot on stage. I would keep it and maybe consider getting a boutique Bassman clone like a Clark Piedmont. If you are good at soldering, you could get a good Bassman clone kit for around $1,500. The good thing about them is they are soldered point-to-point with no PCB's (printed circuit boards) so they are much more reliable. PCB's tend to break down over the years and start to have problems. Point-to-point amps are very easy to repair and a lot of times, you can do it yourself with a little bit of amp knowledge.

    • @bradatherton9369
      @bradatherton9369 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PeterDad60 The Hot Rod Deluxe and Deville are quite different from the Bassman. Topologically, they are quite different, the largest differences are 1) the tone stsck and 2) the bassman has a cathode follower driving the tone stack (more drive capability), whereas the Hot Rod's tone stack is driven from the plate terminal. The power amp stage, howvever, is almost identical. Both schematics are available online and easy to inspect.

      There is a website that shows all of the changes that would need to be done. I can't recall what it is but Google Bassman reissue mods. It is quit extensive. I don't think it is very easy to do. I've been changing the 1959 to match my 1960 and it is sounding much better. I did a whole video on Cracking the Code of the 5F6-A Circuit. It is pretty interesting how many changes Fender made back in the late '50's without documenting them on any schematics.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always have it on LP. The trick of the OCD for me is to keep it as clean as possible. To do that it is a must to run it on an 18v power supply, LP, drive around 9:00, tone to taste but mine is on 10:00, and then the volume to drive the amp. I am usually at 2:00 on the volume and anything over that drives the amp crazy in a good way if you are looking for feedback. It still cuts a little tone, sometimes good, sometimes not so good so I use it sparingly and try to get most of my tone by turning the amp up but that is not always easy in a small room.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Marron I think so. You might have a little more gain because of the 12AX7 tube in the first gain stage. I think they sound pretty close to an original. It would be best to have re-issue Tung-Sol 5881's for power tubes.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bonjour France! It is a vintage 1959 Bassman built in 1959. Good clones are hard to find. It will probably be easier to buy a Fender Reissue '59 Bassman. They are not that expensive and are actually pretty good. Good clones in the US are Victoria, Grammatico, Clark, and Kendrick but they are usually more expensive than the Fender. The clones are soldered point-to-point but the Fender used printed circuit boards which are not as dependable.

    • @loiclaporte263
      @loiclaporte263 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would be your advice then? Buy a reissue and make changes? Have you listed them in one of your videos? I have here a bassman 100 of 70, a clone of jtm 45 with a 4x12London city (G12h30 of time) and a reverb deluxe blackface of 66. I am also a big fan of Hendrix. Your videos are a real gold mine. I would love to meet you to talk about it all at length. If one day you are passing through the south of France the door of my studio is open to you, my table also ^^

    • @millstap
      @millstap  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is so nice of you. I would love that. Actually we get very close to your town several times a year. My daughter, son-in-law, and two grandsons live in Madrid. I've always wanted to drive to France but the boys, 2 & 4 years, make it prohibitive. The JTM 45 clone should be an exact copy of the Tweed Bassman. You already have the amp. Let me know which brand clone it is and maybe I can find the schematic. That should be a good foundation then it is just a matter of getting the exact same effects that Jimi used. Plus, you might have to invest a little into tubes for your amp, maybe New Old Stock tubes that would have been used in that amp back in the '60's. I go through a Uni-Vibe replica pedal, into a Denis Cornell reissue Fuzz Face, then into an Area 51 Alienist (clean boost), into an Area 51 Clyde Clone wah-wah, then to a Fulltone OCD, then an MXR Carbon Copy and to either a vintage Fender reverb unit of a vintage Echoplex EP-2. The order is important. I keep the Vibe-Baby in "cancel" mode just like the old Uni-Vibes. It adds a really nice boost too. Your amp should even sound closer with the 4x12" cabinet. I'm using 4x10".

    • @loiclaporte263
      @loiclaporte263 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      so the amp is made by a friend craftsman who lives in Toulouse, he also made me a copy of the univib and fuzz face germanium that I love. I will be very interested to show you the plans of the replica and what Sydney did on it. And I will be very honored to have your tips for working on my amp and improving the lamps. I actually knew that the old jtm 45 was copied to the good-natured bassman. Besides, my friend Sydney had the hands of amp tour Experience Hendrix. Do not hesitate if you go near Toulouse, I can meet you and try different toys at home. I also recovered a vintage Marshall cabinet in 8x10 !!!! I will try the order you recommend for the pedals, for now I was strat, fuzzface, vox (clyde mc coy replica a really good here just here th-cam.com/video/i3sMXHqbqkg/w-d-xo.html ) octavio (germanium face lift the same as uses Randy Hansen) then the univib. But I always found that my univib did not sound like I would like ... and I would like so much that my set up sounds like yours. I do not know if you know the history of 4x12 london city cabs? In fact it is in cabs built at the same time as those who are so sought after, the architecture is strictly the same up to the wood used, as well as the speakers, namely the g12h30 prerola and not g12 m as one can read everywhere on the net

    • @millstap
      @millstap  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bet Toulouse is beautiful. We have a Toulouse Street here in New Orleans. Not quite as beautiful, LOL. Try placing your Uni-Vibe at the beginning of your chain. That is where I have mine. Another real secret of my sound (in my opinion) is the Framptone 3 Banger Amp Switcher. They don't make them anymore but you might be able to find one. They were designed my Peter Frampton. It has a really good buffer circuit in it that changes the signal to low impedance so you can run long cables on stage without any signal loss. It keeps my signal strong right up to the amp. I didn't quite understand your comment "Besides, my friend Sydney had the hands of amp tour Experience Hendrix." Did Sydney have something to do with the Experience Hendrix tour? What a great sounding and authentic looking wah-wah. I wish I had that one. Your Uni-Vibe may sound better at the front. If it has a "cancel" mode, try leaving it in "cancel" most of the time. That is one of my tricks.

  • @thepbgbofficial
    @thepbgbofficial 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried reading all the comments, and I'm sure you hit it up but are you using a fuzz or just the OCD?

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I guess I didn't document it. It is really hard to tell if it is just the OCD or both OCD and fuzz because they sound very similar depending on the guitar volume. With the OCD only, I would have the guitar on 10 but with the fuzz and OCD on, I would turn the guitar down to 5 or so which gives you a big range from clean to hard fuzz on 10. I think it may be just OCD in the beginning and it appears I may have kicked in the fuzz around 1:26.

I am like wtf? I am having that moment right now with Wind cries Mary - I've learned how to do it by all these youtubers, now I am doing my own research - and the chord shapes aren't the same, not even in the same place. He does a C-B-Bb progression and his fingers don't even deviate from frets 3-5. I have figured out 50% of what he's doing but some of his fingering still makes no f'ing sense to me.

Speaker in CA. but they closed so I am dreading trying to find someone good. I know they are out there. Ted Weber does it and they may be fine but I have never used them. Orange Co. sold their business to a company in Florida but I was not sure I could trust them either so, I am still looking. It does make a difference.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      richard cockburn Stick with your old saddles. 10's are a good gauge. I've tried both Raw Vintage and Callaham saddles and they are about the same. I think the Raw Vintage might be a little more like the original Fender saddles. I bend strings a lot so I cut little grooves in the saddles. They cause my strings to break. So, every time I change a string, I polish the top of the saddle with a rubber buffer which eventually wears down the saddle so I have to replace them about once a year or so. The Raw Vintage and the Callahams are supposed to be the hardened steel like the old saddles but I am still able to cut grooves in them with my strings. The Raw Vintage springs will make a sound difference if your other ones are not that good.
