      Do you ever play Naked Brutality? A guide for starting on that mode could be fun. Better yet, Naked Brutality blind start. Just take whatever landing zone and colonist the randomizer gives you.

    • @AdamVsEverything

      @@Zombull73 Most of my runs are naked brutality starts, or even 'tribal naked brutality' in which I start with 1 naked tribal research pawn instead of the normal NB research. Before Ideology I mostly did random 1 pawn, random seed, random map, go. :P
      You can find quite a few 'naked tribal brutality' runs on this channel.

      @@AdamVsEverything this is interesting. I schedule rec time after two hours of work, in sets of 3, followed by "any" time, after each; like in real world breaks after work sets of two hours each. Usually this allows some down time for hauling and cleaning. -but it all depends on priority lists.
      for e.g:
      SA; WWRA; WWRA; WWRA; WWA; SSSSSSS.
      This also allows for day naps, and frequent breaks for meal times. As pawns consider rec tim to also be sleep / cleaning. they're weird like that.

      Just started using this schedule now for almost all my guys and wow what an improvement to their mood. In my opinion its better to center around this type of schedule because pawns just seem to be more functional this way. It sucks when productive gets ruined because of a mood breakdown or a breakdown just before a fight.

    @19:13 Adam didn't mention why he put recreation first for quick sleepers. I'm guessing it's because they have higher odds of finishing sleeping before the hours are up, (ie, sleep 4:30 or less instead of 5 hours flat), so putting recreation before guarantees that they always walk-recreate-sleep-walk instead of walk-sleep-walk-recreate-walk.
    Superb guide. Getting a ~+15 mood and bypassing ~-15 social mood penalties looks like a great choice in exchange for 20% productivity. Unless one is playing with time based wealth progression, bad events scale off wealth (primarily made from productivity) and are only unsurvivable when combined with mental breaks (due to low mood), so I can see why the biphasic approach is so powerful on the higher difficulties.

    • @AdamVsEverything
      @AdamVsEverything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, that is one of the reasons. Quick sleepers are kind of crazy. It's actually weird watching how well they do on an 'all anything' schedule, actually.

    • @PopeGoliath
      @PopeGoliath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@AdamVsEverything if you're worried about long jobs like hunting going all the way through the recreation time, putting it after sleep can work... And you can avoid that extra walk trip from someone waking up early by deliberately shorting their sleep schedule. If they have 3 hours set to sleep followed by 3-4 hours recreation, they'll sleep through whatever parts of that recreation they need to for rest, but then always begin recreating immediately without a wasted trip.

    • @Wise_That
      @Wise_That ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@PopeGoliath Thank you, I feel like everyone else here is missing this. Sleep 2 hours, recreate 4 hours is SO much better than 2 rec 4 sleep, because a colonist will stop recreation to sleep, but won't stop sleeping to recreate. A pawn who has recently recreated and doesn't need the top-up (say, for example, they recently took drugs), will attempt to go back to work during a rec period, which is bad if sleep is next. So you should put rec last and make it longer.
      Meanwhile, if you put short-sleep, long rec, a colonist who is very tired can sleep in over their rec period without issue, as long as they wake up with enough time for 1 bar's worth, while a colonist who is well rested will only take the 2 hours scheduled and then do whatever rec they need, maybe only 1 bar's worth, and then go to work in one trip!

    Yeah, I started using biphasic what feels like ages ago now, and it's a game changer for dealing with raids. Didn't know about the mood fall maximum rate, so thanks for that.
    One thing I do in larger colonies is try to stagger work so that I can constantly man limited production stations. You can have just about constant utilization of 2 stations with 3 pawns on biphasic offset 4 hours in succession - which is occasionally useful for lower level cooks when you have a flood of visitors, or you need to prep for a caravan. Otherwise I might just offset cooks to wake up and work several hours early so that there's food ready when the rest of the colony starts waking up.

    • @AdamVsEverything
      @AdamVsEverything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, staggering schedules is really great. I usually start doing that right around the time I get to advanced researching so that I don't have to make as many advanced research benches etc.

    4:02 This is the hardest part of Rim World, being READY to fight. If the productivity is around 20% less then it is definitely worth for that reason alone, if not the cost of a mental breakdown for many hours.

  • @etienne8110
    @etienne8110 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ON the productivity side don't forget to factor in the inspirations of high mood.
    Some save a great deal of time (instant annimal taming, prisonner conversion etc...)
    Plus less tantrum and other catharsis events means more time working. So It's not sure that overall there is much of a loss on productivity.
    It's a bit of the same IRL with the 4 days week, less time at work yet productivity went up overall...

    A tip that might help some folks. I put a forced meditation time before bed, and placed the assiged meditation spot at the foot of the colonist bed. This forces them to take a trip to their assigned bed before sleep, so they don't walk to recreation that is further away from their bed. This has worked out really well for me. Cheers!

    My favorite schedule is work 24h/day, except for pawns with stationary work who get 1h naps twice a day in their bed right next to their work station. Pawns will eventually collapse from exhaustion.
    As it turns out, this is very efficient. While sleeping on the ground is only half as efficient as a legendary bed, sleep falls 3.3 times faster when pawns are tired then when they are well rested, meaning that pawns on a 24h/day work schedule will still sleep less overall. As a bonus, they don't immediately colapse from exhaustion when at the exhausted level (meaning their rest doesn't fall at all). Pawns will also not waste time moving too or from their bed, and they won't have any recreation whatsoever. They will also eat less, only grabbing a meal when their hunger bar gets at the very hungry stage. So all and all you have a huge increase in productivity.
    The down side is a pretty massive mood hit from exhaustion, lack of recreation and hunger. There are a lot of other ways to manage your colonist moods, lots of them in tandem will help. In any case, a key element of my strategy is that most mental breakdowns will get interrupted when the pawn collapses from exhaustion. So my strategy here is to mostly avoid them going into into "the extreme mental break" zone, cause those really are a problem. I deal with most major or minor mental breaks with a combination of skip and wall-raise: IOW I skip the broken pawn in a corner, wall them in there and I let them collapse from exhaustion.
    As for keeping my pawns happy during raids: drugs and psychic pulsers do wonders.

    • @AdamVsEverything

    • @katanah3195
      @katanah3195 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AdamVsEverything With the prison labor mod I find prisoners won't work if set to "anything", even once they're rested, fed, and full on recreation, so I have to use "work", but I might take some ideas from this to better set up prison scheduling to cut down on mental breaks, when prisoners go berserk it cuts into productivity because wardens have to go either down the berserk prisoner or wait for the other prisoners to do so, and then rescue everyone downed in the fights or risk them either bleeding out because no one will tend them if not in hospital beds or starving to death because no one will feed them if not in hospital beds. Then productivity is further cut down because both colonist doctors and prisoner doctors have to take time away from other tasks to go feed the incapacitated prisoners in hospital.

  • @AtomicArtumas
    @AtomicArtumas ปีที่แล้ว

    As far as "being prepared for when bad stuff happens" goes, I actually recommend something that wasn't really mentioned here.
    The "don't care about light, care about always having colonists ready" schedule - Bi-phasic, but with every single colonist scheduled to not be sleeping at the same time.
    For example, if you have 2-3 colonists, you schedule each one to start recreation/sleeping after the prior one finished.
    If you have 24 colonists, you set one to start sleeping each hour.
    This does require dedicated bedrooms and preferably in-base work colonists to work during the night time hours, but it works AMAZINGLY.
    At most you'll be down a single colonist any time something happens. You'll never not have someone available to work on stuff. Priority tasks (need to build a wall to deal with an incoming raid? need more food? need to produce a bit more to sell to a merchant to buy something before they leave? etc.) will constantly be worked on with no breaks.
    Also, if playing highly modded games, you can actually get colonists that... really don't actually ever need to rest, and thus should just 24/7 be on anything. I say anything, because they're really stupid at times and will starve themselves to death if set to work and given a task too far away. I've had it happen.
    This is also just a good reminder that... Rimworld is a video game, and thus isn't going by real world rules.
    "Tiredness" is simply a meter, and how it gets filled doesn't matter. While Bi-phasic sleep schedules CAN work IRL, most people will have an insanely hard time actually getting to sleep for that short of a period of time, and waking up after that little time.
    But your colonists are video game characters... so they just go over to their bed and run the code for "sleep". Done.
    This applies to a LOT of games - MOST management games of any type will benefit from doing stuff like splitting sleep hours, sleeping less or more, etc. - It's not just Rimworld, it's generally basically any game that features energy bars and sleep times. You can pretty much always optimize them way better, and in way more "insane" ways, than you could IRL.
    You can even adjust the biphasic schedule to have one longer and one shorter period of sleep, to better maximize stuff like avoiding night time, or having a colonist that you manually order between 2 jobs, one that requires less time and one that requires more time - like cooking + research or whatnot.

    I think productivity is higher for the biphasic in the long term run, less breaks and higher mood will play out in your favor when conflicts are resolved faster, people heal faster, and your colonists aren't tied to events outside the storyteller.
    I wonder though if slightly staggering the schedules by an hour or so from colonist to colonist will have a higher benefit if everyone is always up and at em.

    Wow. I'm a rookie to the Rim. Only 399 hours. I thought I had to schedule work to avoid a colony full of slackers. Thank you for this valuable info.
    This was great info and as a big fan of naps in real life I will be adopting the biphasic schedule. Also makes me wonder if it is the ideal schedule in other similar games such as Oxygen Not Included.
    Thanks again!

    Simplest method I use to ensure everyone is in good mood for combat, at the center of my base, I put 3 cabinets, 1 for survival meal, 1 for insect jelly, and 1 for wake up, when a raid occurs I will pause the game and draft my pawns, and look at their mood, if they need food, I'll make them eat survival meal, if they need recreation, I make them eat insect jelly, if they are sleepy make them take wake up, make sure to unzone the cabinet for your hauling animals, and to make the insect jelly last longer, don't make it part of your pawn regular diet, just use it only during raids 👍👍👍 The only pawn that can mess this plan is teetotalers, so make any of them do civil work only and not involved in combat 👍👍👍

    • @AdamVsEverything
      @AdamVsEverything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I play with no pause, so I can't really micromanage that in time :P Biphasic is one of the tools I use to overcome no pause.

    Huh, and I was putting all my colonists to work the immediate hour after sleep ends because they sleep in a barracks and they'd disturb each other's sleep if they got up willy nilly instead of all at the same time.

    I never really used schedules for a loooong time. …that is until I started using royalty psy-casts more frequently.. it was a little frustrating to see pawns not do important tasks (even research) in favor of meditating for hours on end the instant their focus dropped below the desired %

If you're looking for ideas of potential future guides, a short guide for confort could be really cool, i think a lot of people could use the informations (How the bar works, how the quality of objets like chairs and beds affect it, the strategies to optimise it...)

    You need dedicated work time otherwise they half mine a block, walk across the map to sit at a table, go do another chore another side of the map, do sow one plant, eat a mean, walk other side of the map to haul something, walk back across the map to fulfill recreation.
    Dedicated work bars about 4 seems to keep them in the one spoor area
    Also always 2 rec before bed and 1 rec for wakeup followed by anything

    • @AdamVsEverything
      @AdamVsEverything  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No you don't. I've played over 6000 hours of 500% and never have any issues at all basically never using work blocks. I do go over when I suggest using them in this guide either way (when you need work done at the expense of mood), so it sounds like you didn't watch it all before commenting.

    Also, mood = productivity. Standard is more likely to mental break and that’s not good for productivity.

    I copied your biphasic schedule, but my colonists don't seem to abide by it at all. Followed one person for few days and after sleep he kept sleeping through the anything time and into the next rec time. Got up did little rec then worked through the next sleep cycle, only getting tired presumably about the time he should then be getting up and so going to bed for the next anything time lol. Watched few others and same thing happened, like accidentally doing the exact opposite of what they should be.
