    Asterix is huge in europe. I had collected all the comics as a kid and watching the movies with family when they were on TV was always an event.

    That TinTin sprite as he walks to and from the screen is damn impressive on the SNES. I went to a french school growing up in Canada, and our school libraries had all those books in french. I liked TinTin the best. Smurfs had some good stories as well.

    Man, Infogrames really nailed the look of the source material for those games based on the comics. I'm an American and am one of the few who has read Tintin, Asterix & Obelix, and Lucky Luke, and I have to say that they did a better-than-expected job of translating the comics to games based on what I'm seeing.

    Asterix is absolutely massive in France and very popular in the rest of Europe. Crazy that Americans are unfamiliar with it. Also, well done pronouncing Infogrames correctly.

      Ghost81 its because the gap between cultures is vast! In the US the promotion of violence is in their culture as you can see from movies and superheroes(deadpool) on the other hand you have europe with smurfs and tin tin! Imagine them in the dc universe!

      I first heard of Asterix in an ad a gaming magazine back in the early 90s. Just thought it was some random game. But it's never really been promoted or pushed here in the USA, at least not during my time.

      comparing a new character like Deadpool to old characters like these isn't really fair - Little Nemo is a better comparison and that wasn't violent at all

    Asterix is very famous yeah, so much so that it even got an awesome arcade game developed by Konami that is very similar to their Simpsons and TMNT beat'em ups. You should definitely check that out, the sprite animation was insane for the time and the game overall is very fun and well done.

    Asterix, Tintin and Lucky Luke are probably the most iconic comics from Europe. Tintin is the one that appeals to me most. The games look interesting on this list and i like how the graphics look in them.

    I'm french Canadian and my childhood was more about Asterix and Lucky Luke than Spider-Man and Batman. We had the comics, we had the movies, but we still had the same consoles as the rest of NA, so we never had those games. I would have loved an Asterix game :O

  • @LongfellowLP
    @LongfellowLP 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm one of the rare Americans who did read Astérix; I had every comic written before the death of writer René Goscinny (the illustrator continued the comic afterwards but that's an inflection point in the kinds of adventures Astérix has) and my dad and I would read them to help me learn French. I have a lot of fond memories. One thing I do have a quibble about just watching these clips is that Obélix looks like he can get hurt! Of course, it makes sense to make your platformer hero vulnerable, but in the comics, he's famously invincible due to permanent effects from a magic potion accident. I think there could be a more story-driven version of their stories where the challenge isn't winning battles, but delivering items, finding people, and dealing with Obélix's occasional bull-headedness. I assume some of the later, more acclaimed games do this.
    But this SNES game does look great and all these Infogrames games seem to have an animation style that recalls classic animation styles while being fast enough and readable enough for gameplay. The Lucky Luke walk cycle in particular is so fun to look at.

  • @SharmClucas
    @SharmClucas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow, these are all gorgeous! I like how clean it all is, I'm not a huge fan of some of the noisier styles with random colors everywhere. Gimme stuff like this, where it's bold and clear. The animations are really impressive too, from the clips you showed it seems they cared a lot about placing them strategically for impact. The art team did a fantastic job.
    I'm glad the internet has let us ignore some of the boundaries things had in the past so we can enjoy culture and entertainment from all over the world. I discovered a couple of these comics as an adult. I like Tin Tin quite a bit. Asterix would have been more fun to me as a kid, but it has surprising depth. I should check out the others now.

    I swear I saw the Asterix games as a kid in Canada. I definitely read some of the comics, because my elementary school french teacher had tons of compilation books and we would read them in class all the time. Pretty sure she was a fan. Tintin, too. I think Tintin was my favourite part of French class. When I saw the cartoon on TV as a kid, I got super excited, and I'd watch it every Saturday (3PM EST on CTV in the 90s). I'd even give up playing video games to watch. It would've been cool to play a game about him as a kid. Not sure if the experience would hold up today for me, but I might give it a try anyways.

      Not only that, Asterix has a lot of albums that make some sort of socio-political commentary at some point. The best example of this (since the whole thing is focused mainly in the social political commentary) is the album called "Obelix and Co." which is about how the romans, tired of getting their ass kicked by Asterix and his neighbours, decide to introduce capitalism as a way of getting them to focus on something else (making money instead of beating the shit out of the romans). The roman in charge of introducing capitalism into the main characters town is a caricature of Jacques Chiraq, who was the french prime minister at the time.

    • @retroarchives8379

    These are all French/Belgian comics. Asterix is French; Lucky, Luke, Smurfs and Tintin are Belgian and Spirou was designed by a French artist, but became popular under a Belgian artist. More recent examples of Franco-Belgian comics are XIII (also turned into a game), Thorgal and Blake & Mortimer (although somewhat older).

    The first Smurfs was really hard as a young kid, but when speaking to people everyone genuinely seemed to enjoy it. The mix of platforming with puzzles was great. The second one is terrible the kinda game you get tired off, after dying randoms for the 250th time. And as mentioned in the video until today I don't understand why the sprites look that bad especially in comparison with the previous one. Even with the password system, the clunky controls were really off-putting.
    It's crazy how we have our own comics in Europe. Tin Tin, Lucky Luck, Astrix are huge Europe and part of the youth of Boomers, Gen X and Millenials, Spirou is not as big, but still most people would the character. But in all fairness, not a lot of people really played those games.
    Thanks a lot for the video, this was great. I was actually looking up if there was a video with Smurfs and then you popped up! It's fantastic how you really have covered such an immense library of games.

    One earlier Infogrames game based on a Franco-Belgian comic series is "North and South", based on "Tuniques Bleues". Cinebook has published a few albums in the last ten years, but when the game was released, the original series was virtually unknown in North America (except for Quebec). I guess the American Civil War theme was general enough to work even without any prior knowledge of the original series. (Also, the game seems fairly original and well-balanced to work on its own, from what I can make out.)

    Both the comics and the cartoons as well as their respective movies were HUGE in Latin America as well. Tin Tin was Indiana Jones and Uncharted before they were even planned. The comics were pretty clever as well. As a matter of a fact both Asterix & Tin Tin comics and cartoons were incredibly clever and witty, full of social commentary and stuff you didn't expect from their mediums. In Latin America we played these games in those bootleg 5-in-1 carts. Asterix' games were basically a given in any of these carts for it's small sized ROM. We played them at 60 Hz... They were freaking impossible to beat. The Lucky Luke game is legitimately good. So is the comic and media. It's hard for me to picture USA not even knowing about these comics, they were huge everywhere else in the world and they've been here for more than half a century almost.

      Hey, super villain of the internet!
      Yah, being adaptations of little known Belgian and french comics in USA, the distributors didn't see any viable market for NTSC versions for most of them. I don't think games like "Tintin au Tibet" ever hit the American shores. You don't miss much tbh. While the Infogrammes of the old days counted amazing graphic designers, they gave zero toss about gameplay and level-design ergonomics, making most of these licence games as frustratingly difficult as a Vietnam war mission near Hanoi. Go try Spirou for instance; I challenge you to finish it without sobbing at least once.

    Roflmao. Seriously, it seems you were surprised by how well liked these franchises are. Fun fact: Spirou/Robbedoes was also a magazine (comics and editorial) released in Belgium and France, with export to the Netherlands. I have to agree though, most of these games are pretty meh, but Asterix & Obelix is pretty fun. The first game DOESN'T really adhere to the source material. Fun fact #2: At the time, Asterix & Cleopatra was a record holder among comics in length and effort spent on it. It did parody the Elizabeth Taylor movie Cleopatra as well. Thanks though for putting up this vid. One last little note: Infogrames also made Pop-Up, one of the most basic, yet entertaining puzzle games on the GB.

    It's interesting to see someone from "overseas" giving these games some attention. Granted, I would recommend them all (except the smurfs games), but I think wie europeans are just so attached to the source material and played these games as kids, that we are kinda biased. This might sound weird, but I used to prefer these to the Disney or even Mario games.

    Lucky Luke is pronounced Looky Luke. The cartoons are all great. and I particularly like the spin off cartoon Les Dalton which is about the main bad guys who Lucky Luke puts in jail at the end of each of his cartoons, showing them while they are in jail trying to escape. It gets really surreal.
