My first console was the NES but when I first saw the SNES and the huge transformation going from 8 to 16 bit it was like a religious experience for me. Super Mario World is still my all time favorite Mario game.
Super Metroid shocks me with its atmosphere. It is definitely my favorite SNES game despite me having grown up with Super Mario World, DK Country, and A Link To The Past instead.
For anyone not old enough, the SNES was a revelation when it came out, an absolute paradigm of video game design. It’s till holds up over 30 years later!
I had a lot of fun on the SNES, but I think I had equally much time of fun with the og Playstation. God I loved the games there. Still, the SNES is an amazing console.
Dude i'm in the same boat tho, i asked my Godmother that used to live in NY (i live in Panama btw) if she could mail me a NES, when i went to the mailbox like 2 weeks later she sent me a dam SNES i was like wtf is this, almost nobody had it on my country by that time lol, came with Super mario World, dude i played that game so much that i know almost every secret in it hahaha
As a preteen the FFIII Opera scene was the most dramatic and fulfilling love story the world had to offer. Finishing that part of the game is one of my most fond core memories.
I’ve played and beaten Link to the Past more times than I remember. It was so engrossing when I was 6 or 7. It’s a nostalgia trip when I play it. Link Between Worlds is great too.
That was my favorite game as wel and hard as hell. I couldn’t get past the water level in the dark work and it wasn’t until much later that I went back and finally beat it. I was so close to the end!
A great list and very well presented! My additions: Starwing/Starfox, Batman Returns, F-Zero, Another World, Mechwarrior, R-Type, Bomberman. They might not stand up today but they're ones I have fond memories of.
Why don't they stand up today? There's far more enjoyment to be had in retro games in my opinion. Much of today's games rely on photo-realistic, movie-esque visuals and audio, and obsession with online play and features, rather than what made games so good in the first place i.e. the gameplay. Do you reckon today's titles will still have the same nostalgic appreciation and love in thirty years that classic NES, MS, SNES, Mega Drive, Saturn and N64 ones do? Methinks not.
@@Nightopian1982 you’re completely right. It’s just sometimes your memory of a game, and experiencing it as a child is often better than the reality of playing it again when you’re older.

mario world on that SNES blew me away at the time - they nailed it in every way-- it was platform perfection and always will be - i still think its the best in the series
@@adrenalinex4 because it’s a very good “portable” make of the game. I know it’s also on droid/iOS but the DS made good use of the second screen as I recall.
@@sebastianhurst958 The Android/IOS/PC versions have graphical "improvements" that actually look worse than the original graphics, whereas the DS version graphics are as faithful to the SNES original as possible. The Android version also AFAIK has a nasty DRM that requires you to be online to play it. Which is the reason I stopped purchasing anything made by Square for mobile devices; I got hit with it on one of the Final Fantasy remakes, which prevented me from playing the game I legally purchased in the places I expected (where I didn't have mobile Internet), so I gave up on anything mobile made by Square. The one I currently play, though, is the PC version. It has improved, and there are mods to restore most of the changed graphics. It also has all the extras of the DS version.
Oh by the way, when you were talking about Chrono Trigger, you completely forgot to bring up one of the game's best things, it's soundtrack. It has literally one of the best video game soundtracks of all time without question! It's a big part of what makes the game so engaging & emotional as the soundtrack just sucks you in & makes you feel emotions you never thought a video game could make you feel back then!
The SNES was my console. I could only get one in my 20's in the early 2000's, but I thoroughly enjoyed every second of every games In played. I was into more obscure games though like New Horizons, Sid Meier's civilization, Secret of Evermore.
My greatest achievement in gaming was playing through Zelda: A link to the past in one run without any deaths and getting a final screen with a save and death count of 000.
The classics as expected. I agree, they're untouchable. But man, this system has some real hidden gems going on. Wild Guns, Demons Crest, Firepower 2000, Hagane, Knights of the Round, Super Turrican 2 and so on. The list is endless.
I hope Square Enix keeps up with the anniversary collections and newly localized games, because I'd love to see a Soul Blazer collection that collects the three main games in that series.
The SNES Controller + Library are one of the greatest things in videogame history! Sadly, games were soooo expensive, no internet or cellphones, that promoting these things were sooo difficult & expensive that many masterpieces didn't get any hype, until the 2010's where game collecting became mainstream.
Bought this for my husband for Valentine’s Day this year. He was born in 87’ so I’m hoping I got it right. I got donkey Kong country and Zelda. Hope he loves it!
I hadn’t beaten Zelda until early 2020, but almost many times. One of my favorites, as many of these others are too. You can find almost all of their roms online for SNES emulators too.

Okay, first and foremost, I wanna show my appreciation to the fact that this has to be the first and ONLY video covering what someone says are the best games on Super Nintendo and they actually PERSONALIZE the list. It doesn't even matter what games you put out. Just saying these were YOUR personal favorites is what makes this list the best if not one of them. Thumbs up, dude.
Well, switch has Breath of the wild. Only future will tell if there comes a better game, but it would still be one of the best games on the switch. ... What do you mean it is not a pack-inn game? Everybody who bought a switch at launch got it, that makes it a pack-inn!

If you haven’t (which I’m sure you already have) please try SM Maker 2, it has so many nods to SMW in the campaign that it feels like a sequel / outtakes or something, you’ll love to.
Great video and great list (although F-Zero should really have been included somewhere), but you really like to live on the edge when it comes to HP management in SNES JRPGs in a way that I never could. I always like to top off even if it means being somewhat wasteful with healing spells and items.
Yeah it's a masterpiece. I can only make it to the 2nd last level on HARD mode. That 2nd top down view level boss is so difficult that he always kilks me
I just want to give a quick shout out to Drakkhen. It was released on the Amiga initially, and later ported to SNES. Despite having a sort of odd gameplay set up, it was quite ahead of its time. It predated open world RPGs such as The Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, Knights of The Old Republic, and plenty of others with its pseudo 3D graphics and real time combat. Plus the SNES version had a fantastic soundtrack that holds up well to this day. Arguably one of the more under appreciated titles in the library that's often overlooked due to it being kind of weird at first.
Loved Super Mario World and Donkey Kong 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. However, the greatest RPG on the SNES was hands down, Tales of Phantasia. That game was way ahead of its time and it was unmatched in terms of graphics and gameplay. The only drawback was that the game was never available in English, however, it was later translated and available for download.
What more could "I" ask for when it comes to the classic Ninja Turtles games, Is to be able to play them all on current gen consoles. 2 and 3 on the NES plus Turtles in time, hell even throw in the remake from a few years ago. it's a shame we can't play them easily. plus the fighter game would be a fun throwback as well.
The SNES made me a loyal Nintendo fan for life. I got it for Christmas in ‘93 when I was 7 years old after begging my parents for months upon months. It became more than video games for me after that. It became a way of life. I like other systems too don’t get me wrong, but the SNES made me fall in love with gaming and I still love the SNES at 36 years old.
I'm so happy Super Mario World was No. 1. It's literally my favourite game ever, and I would die of happiness if it got an HD remake in the Kotabe style, or even the NSMB style.
I just grabbed an RGB modded SNES jr. I've still got most of my old SNES collection and am going to be playing through them with my kids now to get them away from the freemium mobile games. Some of my best memories with my middle brother was playing 2 player co-op secret of mana for hours and hours and also getting just demolished in FFII and III.
People putting Super Mario World as the "best" platformer are blinded by nostalgia. DKC2 is much better in every possible way. Gameplay, graphics, music, level design, enviroment variety, difficulty and secrets.
1. Diddy Kong quest 2. Contra 3. Metroid 4. Megaman 5. Yoshi's island 6. Killer instinct 7. Kirby 8. Turtles in time 9. Star fox 10. Street Fighters 11. Aerofighters 12. Super ghouls n ghosts 13. Mortal kombats (specially Ultímate) 14. Mario World 15. All stars 16. Star fox No RPGs, thanks
I actually love Yoshi's Island more. At the time I completed it to 100 on every level because I had SO MUCH FUN. It was a nice variation on the Mario formula that deserve the "uniqueness" vantage over Super Mario World.
I’ve never heard of anyone else getting 100 on each level!! Soooo, when each world releases 2 new levels, those 2 levels I was never able to get 100 on those!! 😬😬
The issue with the Snes is there are so many great games on the system that you could have a best 100 list and all the games on it would deserve to be in the top 10.
James Rolfe said recently in one of his AVGN episodes that the NES honestly has a lot of garbage on the system. That's what's so great about the SNES. It doesn't have nearly as much shitware like the OG Nintendo does, and a far larger percentage of its library is still serviceable/playable at a minimum, with a huge chunk of the games being memorable or even iconic. My favorite console ever.
I don't know if they would do that, they make good money money off those games individually. They got all the titles on the psn in some form of fashion, they make more money with them separate. I got a couple games on my psn account, my son has all on his, I'm not a fan of 8 and 9.
If you'd finish LttP, it'd probably be your number 1. Even today it holds up 100%. Can't count how many times I've played this through. And the LttP rando game (and community) might be the best of all randos. The game is simply amazing and established so many great things in the Zelda ethos.
I didn't play it until 2016 and I love it too, it's just such an incredibly well-made game. It holds up so well you don't even think about it holding up if that makes sense.
You know the SNES is too awesome when there's plenty of good exclusives(at the time) missing on this list like: Star Fox, FF5, Lufia 2, Breath of Fire 2, Harvest Moon, Tactics Ogre, Dragon Quest 5 and 6, Killer Instinct, Seiken Densetsu 3, Front Mission Gun Hazard, Fire Emblem games, the other two of the Quintet Trilogy, Tales of Phantasia, Mega Man 7, not to mention the multiplatform stuff!
The best way to play Chrono Trigger is by playing the DS version of it. Not only it has anime-style cutscenes thrown in during some of the most important events in the game, but it also contains additional content to the SNES version. So if for some reason, you can't play it on SNES, DS is the way to go.
In case the other person who still owns a PlayStation Vita is looking at this thread, that's a handy place to play Chrono Trigger as well (in addition to this era of Final Fantasy games).
Yeah I played Chrono Trigger on iOS and it works really well. I think it helps that the movement never needs to be terribly precise, so the virtual joystick works fine. Meanwhile something like A Link to the Past or Super Mario World would never work on a touchscreen because they require tight movement.
@@j.b.1903 Thanks! I just bought a Vita and I never knew Chrono Trigger was on Vita. I have always wanted to play it, but I hate playing games on my phone, I don’t have an SNES, and the DS version is semi-expensive. I will definitely buy it.
I also used to love Axelay, Hagane (even though it's so difficult), Super Turrican 2, Super Return of the Jedi, Street Fighter Alpha 2 to name a few more. I'd have personally had Zelda a Link to the Past as number one, followed by Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Super Mario World, but it's a great list. I've never fallen out of love with the SNES and Mega Drive, but I'm really getting back into them again. It sounds odd, but I'm actually kind of glad I've never got into modern machines. I've played on a number of games from them, but I'm not too fussed. A lot of 'tits and arse and no substance' springs to mind when I think of modern games.

The SNES era was Disney’s golden age of video games. yes!!
Great titles!
Methinks not.

mario world on that SNES blew me away at the time - they nailed it in every way-- it was platform perfection and always will be - i still think its the best in the series
for Chrono Trigger, I would highly recommend playing the DS version
Why
Probably because it has cutscenes

Yes of course Drakkhen1&2
I've beaten SMW countless times. Such great replayability. It really is one of the greatest video games of all time.
Loved Super Mario World and Donkey Kong 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. However, the greatest RPG on the SNES was hands down, Tales of Phantasia. The only drawback was that the game was never available in English, however, it was later translated and available for download.
Chrono Trigger is better.
Hard agree with Tales of Phantasia!
I honestly really wasn’t a fan of it. The battle system was weird and not particularly fun and the story was kinda crap as well.

The issue with the Snes is there are so many great games on the system that you could have a best 100 list and all the games on it would deserve to be in the top 10.
James Rolfe said recently in one of his AVGN episodes that the NES honestly has a lot of garbage on the system. That's what's so great about the SNES. I would love if they showed the ogre battle series and final fantasy tactics some love as well.
I don't know if they would do that, they make good money money off those games individually. They got all the titles on the psn in some form of fashion, they make more money with them separate. I got a couple games on my psn account, my son has all on his, I'm not a fan of 8 and 9.

Lufia and Lufia 2 were great. Tactics Ogre was garbage
All in all, pretty awesome list! So many timeless games 🤩
The best way to play Chrono Trigger is by playing the DS version of it. Not only it has anime-style cutscenes thrown in during some of the most important events in the game, but it also contains additional content to the SNES version. So if for some reason, you can't play it on SNES, DS is the way to go.
Heard "hello there lovely people! " After a long time...
After one week
Yup 😂
*peephole
The Chrono Trigger phone app is surprisingly good, I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to use an emulator.
I used it alot while waiting in themepark lines several years back.
The PS1 version of Chrono Trigger also released on Nintendo DS and its pretty easy to track down.
Your list is so far the best and the most complete I’ve ever seen
"...not on SNES mini..."
Me playing it on SNES mini: that's a real shame.
Mod it and you can play it
@@dwaynethemineraljohnson412 yes. That's the point of my....sigh....
;)
The cool thing is if you mod your SNES mini, you can play it. You should give it a shot
@@killingtime4444 Dont worry, I'm with you lol
Yoshi's inland is an absolute blast. The ending was scary for me as a kid.
I got Chrono Trigger on the DS and had no idea how great it was going to be when I got it. Best used game from GameStop ever.
If you got a ps3 or Ps Vita, it might be still available at the psn store, I got it on my psp go.
Remember when it first came out. Got it for Christmas
