I believe it started back in the 19th C…very old and unfortunate practice. Probably when fish keeping took off some guy thought “a ha, I can make money if I call these fish bowls.”
I actually prefer petco to pet smart, the one near me is smaller than the average pet smart, but they really care about the fish. About 2 years ago I went to pet co and came across a diseased gourami, they said an owner had brought it in because they didn’t know what to do. So they gave it to me for free, I brought it home, quarantined it, and was able to cure the disease, he is still alive and growing! One of my favorite fish now
What kind of gourami? And I love that you said that because my petco is sooo much better than our petsmart- it’s actually about the same size but the quality of animals are great.
My local Petco has a much better aquarium section with some marine tanks which is a lot better than the local PetSmart. They upgraded a few years ago and one of the employees said the new system doesn't share the water between all of the tanks.
My local pet store doesn't keep Bettas in cups - they keep one Betta in every species tank to get used to community living and get out of their cups. You can go in and find Bettas that live with the fish you specifically keep. So you know when you put it in your tank it won't be aggressive! SO smart.
I visited our local pet store that sells fish earlier and things are getting better, tanks are not crowded and the conditions of the fish are better than in the previous years. Fish store owners and staffs are responsible, hoping everyone will do that too :)
I visited a new-to-me Petco recently (different location that I'd never stopped into before) and was amazed at how great the aquarium section looked. Fish looked healthy. I got a chance to talk to the young man who was there doing a water change on their system. He's a fishkeeper, too, and I was impressed with him. I definitely plan to go back there, even took a look through their tanks to see what species of smaller freshwater fish they have, since I'll be redoing a couple of my tanks in the near future once I get the current inhabitants moved into a pond I'll be putting together now that the new greenhouse is done (it's inside the greenhouse).
This is great to watch especially when I come back from school! We watched a video today and it said "Poor goldfish in a tank has never seen the outside world". For me, this gave off a message saying "Release your goldfish into your local pond. FREE THEM"

Had a customer come in yesterday who wanted to put eight (8) Neon Tetras in a fourteen litre tank (3.7 gallons). I strongly advised her against it and explained why and she said "I've done my research I'm not doing anything wrong, the tank's fine. If you're not going to sell them, fine I'll just go to (name of next store)" and finished the rest of her sale sour. Unfortunately I found out that, that customer works for the same company as me... In head office... I mean at least they aren't selling the fish I guess.
I would like to know where she did her research. There's unfortunately a lot of false information on the internet and I've made a similar mistake when I was a starter.
Petco ended the $/gal sale and now does a 50%off sale, which brings a 10 gallon to $14 and a 20 long to $28. Despite that I still love my petco, they really care about the animals and even have a saltwater section with difficult animals like anemones and clams.
At my high school there was an epic tropical sea aquarium next to the chief janitor´s office. Not sure how large it was, but could have been about 2 m. I graduated in 1997.
@@FishForThought yes, I often hung around there when I had some free time and was not compelled to read/study in the library. For the time being I'll stick with fresh water tanks but who knows. Last year I've walked around a huge salt water basin in Harderwijk, an aquatic zoo. Like they've remade a part of the old diked off inland sea to house dolphins and a couple of furry mammals. It smelt like salt water where you didn't expect it. But just less than a century ago, this inland sea claimed a lot of fishermen during bad weather.....
Also I can vouch for Petco I remember going to one a while back and being blown away by the selection, lots of fish that I never thought I'd see (lots of tetras, livebearers, cichlids, and glofish of course, but I also saw what I believe to a flagfish and marbled hatchets being listed), the tanks all looked to have at least some live plants if memory serves, they had aquascaping supplies, including soil, and some decorations like plastic lily pads and leaf hammocks, as well as a tank for live plants like anacharis Really blew me away (especially compared to my Petsmart which has a more limited selection of fish and plants), so I'll definitely try to do my shopping there
Those fish in the Starbucks cup are killifish, possibly some species of Nothobranchius. They're expensive, uncommon, and don't live long, so most people who keep them also breed them. I'd be willing to bet some breeder pulled those out of their growout tank to take the picture of them. (I prefer clear deli tubs to photograph my minnow juveniles.) Killifish breeders have a reputation for using whatever small containers they can get, especially Sterilite shoebox-size clear totes. They don't need a lot of water and some species' eggs need a dry season in peat before hatching.
My local Petco is great. The staff really care about the animals in the store. I've overheard employees educating people on proper care for goldfish, telling them about tank size, filtration, etc. I had to rehome some neon tetras last year, and they took them in with no problems. And I've walked in multiple times to see them in the process of doing water changes for all the tanks. Compared to my local Petsmart stores, the fish generally look healthier and are more active. It changes from location to location, but I've always been impressed with the one I go to. Great customer service, too. QOTW: My game of choice right now, and always, is World of Warcraft. I'm having a lot of fun in the Dragonflight expansion.

There was a goldfish in a small pond that my little brother caught. Just a single fat looking one and nothing else but he was like "SIS YOU SHOULD PUT IT IN YOUR TANK". He just couldn't understand that it was my quarantine tank so I had to have this whole conversation with my mom💀We ended up spending hundreds of dollars for that fish and after a while we had like 200 fish eggs. I knew it looked damn suspicious-
5:16 That turtle tank is actually good, no joke. The photo only shows 1/3 of the tank. See the bottom right corner of the photo? Those pebbles are in the water, you can see the water line. And it's a much bigger tank than the photo shows. It also has a built-in filtration system under the decking, right underneath the turtles. I mean it's a pretty decent tank if we remove the fake plant and messy pebbles, and ignore the weirdly installed decking, and them feeding the turtles on land...
My local petstore is a chain store but it’s amazing, all but one employee have fish tanks at home and are all competent. They asked me what my tank size was and everything when buying fish in order to make sure I wasn’t putting a bristlenose pleco in a bowl 😂. They don’t even sell bettas because they have no space for them and refuse to keep them in cups.
I’m gonna make a solid case for Petco vs PetSmart: Live plants! They have more of a verity to chose from. They sell tissue cultures and have a dedicated “plant only” tank. The tanks look better kept. Generally lower prices. Good online deals. Shrimp actually in stock.
It's so sad, it feels like FTR 100 was yesterday, yet it was like 2 YEARS ago. Also, Christmas and Christmas break went by in a snap! Late 2022-2023 is just going by so fast.

"The Bible is too long" 😂😂 Handicapp-fish are just as special, if not more special than fish w/o abnormalities. 🐠I have a beautiful, 6-inch freshwater Angelfish that is blind in one eye, so his name is Wonder (like Stevie Wonder). 👁 He is amazing, and has even become a father several times....we kept 2 of their babies. 💞
My dad got a betta and put him in a fishbowl. I got a proper tank for him and used the bowl as a terrarium. I didn't need to throw away the bowl and I get to keep my fish healthy and happy.

I had a common plecko that was too big and poopy for my 45 and I thought long and hard about catch clean cooking him until someone with a pond took him. He was 20" long.
My local petco's fish department is run be people that actually watch videos like these, have quarantine tanks, and make sure customers buy the right sized tank, and they still do the tank sales, I got my 60 gallon for 45 bucks last summer, also got some cheap guppies from their orphanage tank, they literally have a community tank full of fish that were brought back.
The thing is, Petco has a lot more potential than Petsmart because Petsmart cannot order anything. It's all automated. They have no control over what they get in. Petco (at least used to be able to) was able to special order and pick through lists to say what they did and didn't want. At least, this is for live fish, and not really as much supplies.
Today I had my first ember tetra fry in my tank they are the first fish I’ve had breed in the 4 months I’ve been in the hobby and it feels awesome to see it swimming around
I had an albino khuli loach that was born without a back fin and because of this he was super strong and buff. We got him for free from Petsmart no one wanted him. Would whip his little stumpy tail nub back and forth intensely to produce thrust. We called him "Muscles". Had him for like 8 years. R.I.P. Muscles. 🪦
Where I live fish bowls are banned. Lfs can sell their remaining stock only if they somehow hammer inside the head of the costumer that those are decorations only and no living animal can be put inside. I hope the next step will be those 20x20x20cm nano cubes with usb lighting shops sell for bettas and shrimp.
been enjoying valheim at the moment. you can catch fish by waiting for them to jump out of the water and then picking them up, or you can do some extreme fishing by hunting sea serpents.
My local Petco is pretty good. When I bought my current Betta, the cashier asked if I had a tank ready at home. I did of course, but I’m glad they’re asking!

Sometimes I wear the same color as an employee of the pet stores that I go to and people think I work there. I say no and then give them some fish facts. Other times I just give people animal facts, before they ask the 'do you work here?' I respond with, 'no, but I do have a degree in Biology and love to study animals. I could give some advice if you like.' I was able to discourage a parent from buying a goldfish or a sea-related fish for their child, because it was pretty. I calmly explained how to take care of a goldfish and how to take care of a fish who lives in salty water. Thankfully the child and parent listened to the advice about researching more before buying a fish. I have more experiences like this, but this one is a favorite of mine.
Petco and Petsmart in my town actually take sick animals to the vet, or have a vet come in. They also adopt sick animals out rather than sell them. That’s more than I can say about the other pet stores out here

QOTW: I never got tired of warcraft 3 frozen throne (not the reforged, the old 2003 version), so many custom maps to play and if you got bored with it, do what I did, create your own map and play it yourself, patch it perfection, nerf Irelia then release the map into the wild but seriously, warcraft 3 was way ahead of its time.
The quality of your Petsmart or Petco is very location dependant. HQ hires people based on thier retail knowledge and not on thier animal knowledge. But sometimes the employee has a personal interest in animals and researches a lot on thier own time and then tries to make small changes in the store based on that knowledge. Thier bosses aren't telling them to do this or paying them any differently for it. So if you have a good Petsmart or Petco, know that it is the people on the ground floor working hard to make it that way without help from the company itself.
When married and you want to expand your fish hobby make sure you already talked her into getting a man cave The irony of calling it a man cave and having to ask the boss wife to get one 😂
There is a petco by me and instead of healing the fish tails that have been eaten by other fish or putting in a separate tank the employee literally took the sick fish(3 of them)and put them down the sink still alive😢

I don't have a problem with my petco. They used to put those crappy 1 and 2 gallon tanks right next to the bettas. But they switched it out so now they keep 5 gallon tanks there. And they got rid of their glow bettas. Yea!

I can semi defend Petco, it’s really about location and who is in charge. Quality of care varies from store to store, I’m the aquatic specialist at my location and out of all stores I’ve been to I can easily say my store is better. Luckily the animal manager is good at what he does, he’s knowledgeable about animals and lets me do what I need to do unlike the asst managers who focus on corporate boot licking and only care about numbers and sales. Stoping me not even 3 hours into my full shift to do inventory, quarterly cleaning, run the carts, go backs, clean crickets, DC boxes. Like mam I got 32 tanks to scrub, gravel vac, do 20% water changes on, scrub algae covered decorations, rinse filter socks and sponges, do water tests, and add salt all while dealing with customers who don’t know why their 12 fish died in a 5 gallon tank they set up yesterday. And I’ve been given a notice that I have to finish up my aquatic “stuff” in…. An hour💀 which is then wasted by them calling for backup every 5 minutes because they are trying to sign up every single person on the planet for Vital Care and they have a line longer than a ride at Disneyland🤦♂️

Petco is the best of the worst, at least in my area. As far as chain pet stores go, they still sell hermit crabs and other stuff they shouldn't, but they have better husbandry than the other chain pet stores. Also, from what I've heard, they don't do dollar per gallon anymore. It's just 50% off. I'm not sure though.
Petco is actually way better then petsmart where I am, they actually treat the fish well and try to make them happy, they also put some bettas in tanks with other fish, and they have this one display tank with a very happy looking betta
I am a university student and live in a resident hall. I have a currently unstocked aquarium and have been looking to get Hymenochirus African dwarf frogs for some time. I have rather hard water being over 400 ppm at my university. Whenever I look online, I find people saying that the frogs do well in hard water, but I do not know if by “hard” they are referring to as hard of water as I have. As a result, I am considering using methods to soften the water I use for my aquarium to accommodate the frogs. I, however, do not know if I should do this and was hoping you could share your thoughts and/or experiences with this topic.

I had a common plecko that was too big and poopy for my 45 and I thought long and hard about catch clean cooking him
until someone with a pond took him.
He was 20" long.
My local petco's fish department is run be people that actually watch videos like these, have quarantine tanks, and make sure customers buy the right sized tank, and they still do the tank sales, I got my 60 gallon for 45 bucks last summer, also got some cheap guppies from their orphanage tank, they literally have a community tank full of fish that were brought back.

The thing is, Petco has a lot more potential than Petsmart because Petsmart cannot order anything. It's all automated. They have no control over what they get in. Petco (at least used to be able to) was able to special order and pick through lists to say what they did and didn't want. At least, this is for live fish, and not really as much supplies.

Today I had my first ember tetra fry in my tank they are the first fish I’ve had breed in the 4 months I’ve been in the hobby and it feels awesome to see it swimming around
2 of my Petco stores in Danbury Connecticut have very knowledgeable Fish reps fish keepers themself.
I had an albino khuli loach that was born without a back fin and because of this he was super strong and buff. We got him for free from Petsmart no one wanted him. Would whip his little stumpy tail nub back and forth intensely to produce thrust. We called him "Muscles". Had him for like 8 years. R.I.P. Muscles. 🪦
I've been playing the sims 4 lately and have been loving building anything I want even giant ponds with fish 😅😂
Where I live fish bowls are banned. Lfs can sell their remaining stock only if they somehow hammer inside the head of the costumer that those are decorations only and no living animal can be put inside. I hope the next step will be those 20x20x20cm nano cubes with usb lighting shops sell for bettas and shrimp.
My Betta fish Michael has a fin deformity. He is just the cutest little thing ever.
We play a lot of "No Man's Sky" when we are not looking for other exciting games, it is lovely to chill.

been enjoying valheim at the moment. you can catch fish by waiting for them to jump out of the water and then picking them up, or you can do some extreme fishing by hunting sea serpents.
My local Petco is pretty good. When I bought my current Betta, the cashier asked if I had a tank ready at home. I did of course, but I’m glad they’re asking!

Sometimes I wear the same color as an employee of the pet stores that I go to and people think I work there. I say no and then give them some fish facts. Other times I just give people animal facts, before they ask the 'do you work here?'
I respond with, 'no, but I do have a degree in Biology and love to study animals. I could give some advice if you like.'
I was able to discourage a parent from buying a goldfish or a sea-related fish for their child, because it was pretty. I calmly explained how to take care of a goldfish and how to take care of a fish who lives in salty water. Thankfully the child and parent listened to the advice about researching more before buying a fish.
I have more experiences like this, but this one is a favorite of mine.
My local Petco is pretty good actually. Most of the employees have fish of their own and give solid advice.
Petco and Petsmart in my town actually take sick animals to the vet, or have a vet come in. They also adopt sick animals out rather than sell them. That’s more than I can say about the other pet stores out here

QOTW: I never got tired of warcraft 3 frozen throne (not the reforged, the old 2003 version), so many custom maps to play and if you got bored with it, do what I did, create your own map and play it yourself, patch it perfection, nerf Irelia then release the map into the wild but seriously, warcraft 3 was way ahead of its time.

The quality of your Petsmart or Petco is very location dependant. HQ hires people based on thier retail knowledge and not on thier animal knowledge. But sometimes the employee has a personal interest in animals and researches a lot on thier own time and then tries to make small changes in the store based on that knowledge. Thier bosses aren't telling them to do this or paying them any differently for it. So if you have a good Petsmart or Petco, know that it is the people on the ground floor working hard to make it that way without help from the company itself.

I don't have a problem with my petco. They used to put those crappy 1 and 2 gallon tanks right next to the bettas. But they switched it out so now they keep 5 gallon tanks there. And they got rid of their glow bettas. Yea!

QOTW: I've been on Splatoon 3! Now that the eggstra work is over, just doing some turf war and salmon run.
I can semi defend Petco, it’s really about location and who is in charge. Quality of care varies from store to store, I’m the aquatic specialist at my location and out of all stores I’ve been to I can easily say my store is better. Luckily the animal manager is good at what he does, he’s knowledgeable about animals and lets me do what I need to do unlike the asst managers who focus on corporate boot licking and only care about numbers and sales. Stoping me not even 3 hours into my full shift to do inventory, quarterly cleaning, run the carts, go backs, clean crickets, DC boxes. Like mam I got 32 tanks to scrub, gravel vac, do 20% water changes on, scrub algae covered decorations, rinse filter socks and sponges, do water tests, and add salt all while dealing with customers who don’t know why their 12 fish died in a 5 gallon tank they set up yesterday. And I’ve been given a notice that I have to finish up my aquatic “stuff” in…. An hour💀 which is then wasted by them calling for backup every 5 minutes because they are trying to sign up every single person on the planet for Vital Care and they have a line longer than a ride at Disneyland🤦♂️

Petco is the best of the worst, at least in my area. As far as chain pet stores go, they still sell hermit crabs and other stuff they shouldn't, but they have better husbandry than the other chain pet stores.
Also, from what I've heard, they don't do dollar per gallon anymore. It's just 50% off. I'm not sure though.
Petco is actually way better then petsmart where I am, they actually treat the fish well and try to make them happy, they also put some bettas in tanks with other fish, and they have this one display tank with a very happy looking betta

I am a university student and live in a resident hall. I have a currently unstocked aquarium and have been looking to get Hymenochirus African dwarf frogs for some time. I have rather hard water being over 400 ppm at my university. Whenever I look online, I find people saying that the frogs do well in hard water, but I do not know if by “hard” they are referring to as hard of water as I have. As a result, I am considering using methods to soften the water I use for my aquarium to accommodate the frogs. I, however, do not know if I should do this and was hoping you could share your thoughts and/or experiences with this topic.
