The story of the live fish was me! I swear I wasn’t stealing lol. I thought it was food when I just glanced at it in passing, not really processing the situation? (Are YOUR thoughts always fully formed?) Like how sometimes I think it’s Wednesday when it’s actually Thursday 🤷🏻♀️ then when it was still there after two days I was like wait…. it says LIVE not “perishable”, lol. And the fish was still double-bagged and unopened when I floated it in my tank, just figured I’d start temperature acclimating it while I got the tank set up. (My fish seemed to have fun checking out the new whale in their tank too). Some people in the comments thought I had put the koi IN my main tank with all my much smaller fish lol. As if I’d do that with an unquarantined fish 🙄 I was scared to open the box at first because I didn’t want to be sad if the fish was dead so it was kinda nice having people cheer me on… Also, the fish did come packaged with instructions that said not to open the bag until right before adding the fish, but the all-caps comment was still really helpful! Definitely got the point across.
That rescued koi is of the Chagoi breed, very sought after. Not the prettiest koi, sure, but it's one of the most friendly breeds. People use it to teach the other koi to be tame because their outgoing nature and friendliness to humans inspires confidence in other fish! I want one, but I have no pond. I cry.
Relating a little to the live fish box, at my work we sometimes have personal packages sent there to prevent theft. One person had a package that was delivered on a day they were absent and it said "Live fish." A member of staff opened it out of concern and it was just a fish tank. There was relief but also confusion as to why that box was used. My guess is that the box gets handled better than if is says "Fragile."
Leaving an animal somewhere random when you don't want it is so mean. I recently got a betta that was left in its tank in a parking lot with so little water. He's getting better now, slow but sure. (Kid named him toast since he was left out in the hot sun.)
That's how I got my Betta (Swim in Peace) last year. Someone bought them for their kid's 10 gallon and the kid refused bc he wasn't a GloBetta and didn't glow under the blue light. So they stuck him on the sharing shelf at church, that is not heated, but still indoors. Nights were getting in the 50s. He'd been there 3 days before I came in and noticed him. So I took him home. He passed 2 weeks ago after houdini-ing out of his tank and somehow ending up a good 6 feet away by my coffee station. 😰
Thanks to the two of you for rescuing them. The number of animals being dumped has sky rocketed since COVID, though I suspect there’s a large percent who are like the spoiled kid who wanted a glo betta and his irresponsible parents.
So for the tank at 7:15, it's actually Aqueon's 7.5 gallon shrimp tank starter kit. I know because I bought it for my first tank lmao. I've since swapped out the kit's filter for a sponge filter and removed the lid/built in lights and added a nicrew light because the plants weren't getting enough rays.
The federal law about mail only refers to mail delivered by the USPS. These are parcels and mail containing text placed inside a mailbox. A great person getting the fish out. Cool to see someone who goes through so much work for a fish!
Talking about live shipping fails: I recently redid one of my tanks and I ordered a group of Celestial Pearl Danios, Scarlet Badis and even a Luk Maw Betta for a different tank. I paid extra for overnight shipping and UPS got all of my fish stuck over weekend in a facility in Kentucky during a snowstorm. My package wasn’t even supposed to go through Kentucky, they put it on the wrong plane and then spent the weekend lying to me and the store I bought it from as to why my fish weren’t here. Thankfully all my fish were alive; stressed buy alive. Now I’m supposed to be having a breeding pair of Guenther’s Killi and another breeding pair of Rachovii Killi who UPS again has delayed it by another day. So wish me luck that all of them come alive again.

I ordered HimI/Miya gouache new 56 set with 8 metallic and 6 neon colours. Also that betta transformation is so extreme! Glad that koi was ok and reunited with its owner.
I'm with you, Chris. I love the open-top paludarium look, but you're dead on. We have very dry air here (southern Arizona), and my paludarium loses water to evaporation at a ridiculous rate. I'm getting ready to break it down and set it up differently, so most of the tank is covered. Won't be doing any totally open-top anything again.
I saw some short-finned bettas over the weekend. Was SO tempted to get one, but I resisted. I don't have a tank set up for one right now. Thinking about setting up my 11g long tank for one when I redo it (it's currently the paludarium I mentioned in my other comment). Hoping to redo that tank in the next few weeks, so... maybe a betta.
I got two betta fish because a coworker found them in cups filled with food on a bench outside their apartment. They were abandoned with the hope that someone would take them. I ended up with them because I was the only person they knew that kept aquariums. They're now in two planted tanks, but I'm sad that it's apparently common to just leave your betta fish outside with the hope that someone else will take them.

want to recreate the tank at 5:30 in a 20long and add some hillstream loaches and see it they will climb the water fall... last package was mosser lee black sand perfect for puffers to wallow like the clip at 0:25 (just lost my congo puff too so that clip hurt a bit)
7:17 or just get one of those thermometer strips for like $3. If it says your tank is 80 then just match it to the strip. Even if you know your tank is 78 it doesn't matter cause the thermometer will display the same temperature.
I use my instant read meat thermometer all the time. It's perfect for setting up my box turtle's soaking baths and making sure the water temp is perfect for him.
What's really bad about that guy plopping his fish on the floor like that is, while you can expect that kind of behavior from people who don't know any better, this guy clearly has at least some level of knowledge about cichlids (to have a breeding pair of acara, a big enough that they haven't killed everything in it despite becoming territorial, and request a severum or geophagus for their tank) and yet still thinks putting his fish on the floor to take a picture of it is a good idea But I'm glad there are still decent people out there like the one who saved that koi, and felt so relieved to see they were able to recover from what happened

lesson from lifeguarding class: getting in the water to help a drowning person is THE WORST IDEA and a last resort. if they're in trouble, it's likely you will also get in trouble. stay on the side, try and calm them down and assess the situation. if you're at a pool and there's no lifeguard, use a rope, pool noodle, or lifeguard floater to pull them out. common misconception that you should jump in to help! even if you're a confident swimmer it's literally the last thing you should go for. if you don't know how to swim you will cause more harm than good because now they have to help two people!

I think if the box says there is live fish in there and it's been delivered at the wrong address, if it's nearby I'd go there myself first and then send another bollocking mail to PostNL or another delivery service operating in The Netherlands responsible for this screw up. Sometimes I get letters misdelivered here and then I contact them to pick it up and correct their mistake. Because PostNL is causing data leaks every day by delivering letters from like medical services, state and financial services to the wrong addresses, it's quite sad. But if there are live animals inside, I'd try to find the proper recipient first and unleash hell at the postal company later. Because they're supposed to do an apparently easy job: delivering stuff at the matching address.
The last thing I ordered on Amazon is my 18-24 in Nicrew Classic LED light that I bought for my 10 gallon rimless Aqueon aquarium with a Fluval 30 filter, and three white cloud minnows. I want to move my other 6 white clouds over from their 10 gallon and let the shrimp have it since I noticed the minnows have been eating all the babies.
One of the last fish things I got from Amazon was more bug bites pleco food. Everything loves it. I've tried using up my old pleco wafers, I still have a partial bag, and the snails don't even want them now.
I just got two air pumps today from Amazon because they were on sale for $3 and I couldn't not. And yesterday I ordered some substrate because I'm currently setting up a 29 gallon and didn't have enough substrate. I want it now!

a few year ago, someone once ordered a fancy betta, and was dropped off at my apartment. I didn't have a car, and it was too far for me to walk. The delivery company wasn't answering. so I opened it, put it in my tank and went ham on Facebook looking for the person, there were like 5 people in my town by that name. Could I have tired the yellow pages? Yes. But my stress levels were already high for many other reason and calling 5 random people was not on my to do list. Eventually found the person, they handed me $10, I was like no you bought your fish already, I was just holding it in my tank, its just marimo there are no fish, there is nothing for you to pay. And they were like ".........Do you sell marimo?" I was like...."kinda sorta?" They asked if they could buy one. So I went and grabbed one, and then they shoved the $10 at me and zoomed away in their car and I still think about it today the speed in which they handed off the cash for a marimo felt like an illegal exchange . I still laugh at that. It was a nice betta.
If someone is drowning and you are not a trained lifeguard, don’t go in the water. They will grab you in their panic and may pull you down too. The rule is: Reach, throw, don’t go. Reach out from land with a hand, foot or branch. Throw a life preserver. Don’t go in. Also, the No Swimming sign is probably there because there is undertow or a dangerous condition. I live at 1056 I sometimes get deliveries meant for 1065, and vice versa. We have been pretty good at just walking it over =P

What's really bad about that guy plopping his fish on the floor like that is, while you can expect that kind of behavior from people who don't know any better, this guy clearly has at least some level of knowledge about cichlids (to have a breeding pair of acara, a big enough that they haven't killed everything in it despite becoming territorial, and request a severum or geophagus for their tank) and yet still thinks putting his fish on the floor to take a picture of it is a good idea
But I'm glad there are still decent people out there like the one who saved that koi, and felt so relieved to see they were able to recover from what happened

Hey Chris, I’ve recently come into possession of a 20ish gallon tank (slightly over 20) and Ive been keeping fish for just over a year now, I have a 10 gallon with a female betta, and a 5 gallon with shrimp and snails. I was thinking of trying out some tetras and Otto’s in the 20 gallon. Do you think that would work out? And how difficult in your opinion are Otto’s to care for? Thanks for the content uploads!
otos are a little finnicky to feed and not very hardy but lots of people still keep them around

lesson from lifeguarding class: getting in the water to help a drowning person is THE WORST IDEA and a last resort. if they're in trouble, it's likely you will also get in trouble. stay on the side, try and calm them down and assess the situation. if you're at a pool and there's no lifeguard, use a rope, pool noodle, or lifeguard floater to pull them out. common misconception that you should jump in to help! even if you're a confident swimmer it's literally the last thing you should go for. if you don't know how to swim you will cause more harm than good because now they have to help two people!

I think if the box says there is live fish in there and it's been delivered at the wrong address, if it's nearby I'd go there myself first and then send another bollocking mail to PostNL or another delivery service operating in The Netherlands responsible for this screw up.
Sometimes I get letters misdelivered here and then I contact them to pick it up and correct their mistake. Because PostNL is causing data leaks every day by delivering letters from like medical services, state and financial services to the wrong addresses, it's quite sad.
But if there are live animals inside, I'd try to find the proper recipient first and unleash hell at the postal company later. Because they're supposed to do an apparently easy job: delivering stuff at the matching address.
The last thing I ordered on Amazon is my 18-24 in Nicrew Classic LED light that I bought for my 10 gallon rimless Aqueon aquarium with a Fluval 30 filter, and three white cloud minnows. I want to move my other 6 white clouds over from their 10 gallon and let the shrimp have it since I noticed the minnows have been eating all the babies.

One of the last fish things I got from Amazon was more bug bites pleco food. Everything loves it. I've tried using up my old pleco wafers, I still have a partial bag, and the snails don't even want them now.
I just got two air pumps today from Amazon because they were on sale for $3 and I couldn't not. And yesterday I ordered some substrate because I'm currently setting up a 29 gallon and didn't have enough substrate. I want it now!

Ive had to replace one nicrew light. It lasted like 3 years but it was kinda my fault it broke-the power tripped and it just stopped working
a few year ago, someone once ordered a fancy betta, and was dropped off at my apartment. I didn't have a car, and it was too far for me to walk. The delivery company wasn't answering. so I opened it, put it in my tank and went ham on Facebook looking for the person, there were like 5 people in my town by that name. Could I have tired the yellow pages? Yes. But my stress levels were already high for many other reason and calling 5 random people was not on my to do list. Eventually found the person, they handed me $10, I was like no you bought your fish already, I was just holding it in my tank, its just marimo there are no fish, there is nothing for you to pay. And they were like ".........Do you sell marimo?" I was like...."kinda sorta?" They asked if they could buy one. So I went and grabbed one, and then they shoved the $10 at me and zoomed away in their car and I still think about it today the speed in which they handed off the cash for a marimo felt like an illegal exchange . I still laugh at that. It was a nice betta.

If someone is drowning and you are not a trained lifeguard, don’t go in the water. They will grab you in their panic and may pull you down too. The rule is: Reach, throw, don’t go. Reach out from land with a hand, foot or branch. Throw a life preserver. Don’t go in. Also, the No Swimming sign is probably there because there is undertow or a dangerous condition.
