- Today the team at EXOK (Extremely Okay Games) has announced that the metroidvania, explor-action game, Earthblade, has officially been canceled. After releasing Celeste in 2018, this was the next game we expected from the studio. Sadly, it no longer will be coming out.
Were you excited for Earthblade? What do you think the team will make instead?

Hate to see a game get canceled, ESPECIALLY an indie game! How excited were you for Earthblade? And what games are you looking forward to now? PERHAPS... Neverway? 🤔
devestating...but also personally a reminder that games are made by people, not factories that automatically churn them out after an "acceptable" length of dev time
@Miniike 100% and it's why I love indies and how real it makes the developers behind them.
But why cancel it not just delay?
@ have u watched the vid/read the blog post? this was not an easy decision nor one made lightly, they weighed up the professional and personal problems being caused by continuing to work on the game and decided it was unsustainable. some of the details have been left private but i trust that if they felt there was a reasonable chance to salvage this project they were really invested in they would have taken it, but there wasnt. people's lives and health and relationships are more important than products
really sad news this. but I hope it's for the better for everyone involved
@playnicekids3192 Agreed! Insanely unfortunate. But can't wait to see what's next for the team
Sad to hear 😢 hope they continue making art
Definitely sad. But they're definitely working on something new, so the creative juices are still flowing!
One less metroidvania to look out for. It is by far my favourite genre and knowing that the creators of what is, in my opinion, the best platformer ever were going to make a metroidvania platformer, hyped me so much. That would have been so good, but it wasnt meant to be :(
I would not argue Celeste being the best platformer! It's up there for sure! Fingers crossed their next project is still amazing!
I never heard of this game before. But I am still saddened. Looks like it had great potential
Yet another example of pressure and expectations taking their toll, because of Celeste huge success they felt like they needed to atleast match it if not 1-up themselves. Truth is every project starts from scratch, and previous results dont translate to present perfection. We should stop hyping games because all we're doing is interfering with their creative process, its best to leave them to their own devices and figure things out at their pace. I hope Team Cherry didn't make the same mistake and kept project scale reasonable
Seems like the ownership disagreement is being ignored by comments like this.
@michelians1148 Im talking a bit out of my ass but i feel like if a conflict like this completely halts a multi-year project that's not even the same ip, then it was already hanging by a thread in the first place. You can't have one of its developers leaving, even if they're a main party, be the main reason for a cancellation, and they even say so themselves in the post
knowing team cherry, they didn't probably, but something tells me they are an extremely passionate team and dont mind the pressure simply due to leths interview where he said "every day they seem to bounce a new idea off me" like how could they be so passionate about a project that they are STILL bouncing ideas off him and each other. not only that but they even mentioned with the other game they are thinking about making after silksong "it'll be hard to scale back to a smaller project after". it all really suggests silksong is huge and they somehow have a huge passion for it still. i literally cant wait for the interviews on how they didnt get burnt out, i really wanna know how they did it. there must of been something keeping them in check.
@@federicosimkus7979 RIGHT, like i'm trying to figure out the connection between Celeste and earthblade really other then "made by the same people". how can a copywrite issue topple a completely different ip? i just wanna know way more about the situation then just that.
I'd like to direct everyone's attention to MIO: Memories In Orbit. It is another beautiful Metroidvania with a 2025 release date.
It may not be Earthblade, but hopefully, it can be a soothing salve for the wounds.
@AzureMoebius22 Great Shoutout! Game looks gorgeous!!!
@CGDannyB I was practically raised on Metroidvanias. Hell, for the past three days I've been occupied with Ender Magnolia, and before that, I'd been working on my latest run or Blasphemous, with hopes of actually finishing the game.
And while I didn't care for the headaches Celeste gave me, I can recognize a solid indie game, so I'm likewise aggravated by the cancelation.
I'm hoping that maybe EXOK will pick it up again in a few years or at least reuse the Earthblade assets that have already been made in their next project, just so all that work doesn't go to waste.
another metroidvania i wanna direct eyes to is Morning Star. the only reason i heard of it is the team posted about it on the r/indiedev reddit. 2 people are working on that what looks to be a masterpeace with one person doing all the art stuff and the other doing the technical.
This is almost equivalent to silksong being canceled
@@NickVS yeah kinda. Even with the noise around it being quieter, Earthblade had potential!
Ah damn, Celeste is my favorite game of all time, so this is a bummer.
This was my most anticipated game of all time, more than Silkong, honestly my 2025 is ruined
Why are you even asking for a Celeste 2? We already got a great DLC and enough modded content that makes any sequel irrelevant in my eyes. Mostly confused at what C2 would even look like,
@lingyuanyan1722 Relax, dawg! Celeste 2 could be anything. New characters, new story. It doesn't have to be Madeline's sequel.
