I think this is why I didn't like public high school. I don't feel like I got enough time to really mull over the concepts in class. instead it was a never ending cycle of taking notes, homework, then test. it seemed like a seamless cycle that was just game of memorization and regurgitation.

I am really enjoying your vids at the moment, I do art, I'm always listening when I'm painting. I think it's because I'm at that point in my life where I AM starting to question what we've been fed in life and how we just take it and it partly forms our belief system and how we run our lives. And how we can actually change all this. The whole 'cattle heard' idea I totally agree with, this is exactly how it is! I feel I've just stopped now and starting to turn around and go along my own path. Many of my friends who study science etc get it, but I'm seeing how blind and blinkered others around me are and that's so frustrating.
Yup, almost by definition your friends will tend to be part of the herd. You have to start cultivating friends who are critical thinkers like you. Good critical thinkers are very rare, so it's not easy to do.
I salute you man, starting now, i will not give a fuck about what others think thats true. I will get my own solutions to my own problems and not rely on sources. You really helped this messed up life.
Critical Thinking is indeed a great way to improve one's life experience in the long run, but detatching from that cattle of cows, at times, can be hard. Especially if you care what other people think of you. Nobody likes critical thinkers until they become famous and succesful, so being able to not care what others think of you is a fundamental skill to have. But how to do that? How can I become unaffected by what people around me think of me?
Great question! I just shot a video on that exact topic and will be posting it as soon as I get my camera repaired (the LCD screen shattered). The bottom line though is this: STOP CARING ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF YOU! Just stop it! It's killing your performance in life. Just decide that you will follow your principles no matter what the consequences. It's scary, but it works. There is nothing that anyone else can give you of true value. When you truly accept this, you will become independent and totally free.
A quick intermediate step if you don't feel ready to just plunge to the solution right away. Think critically about this and see for yourself (crucial), can anyone truly see the thoughts in your mind? Can you see the thoughts of other people as they are occurring? If not then you have freedom of mind and can think whatever whenever, and since it's thoughts there are no implications in reality. Critical thinking can very much be playing around with ideas and working out things in the space of your mind, actualizing such ideas might receive criticism. Think about that for a second though, regardless of what you do and especially in western society someone WILL dislike it. As I see it society actually forces you into the corner where you have to think for yourself, and it's for the better. Furthermore criticism as I've discovered is surprisingly enough crucial to keep the western society at such a good standard of living. Take crime for example, in the western world even minor things gets public and receives criticism. Nobody really loves being criticized, but by getting the criticism it's pointed out what doesn't work and thus gives the opportunity for improvement. In contrast we have dictatorship where major crimes against humanity is barely mentioned and criticism is banned, and you'll be severely punished for speaking out against wrongdoing. So what is the general trend here? Criticism/critical thinking -> Improvement. Personally I can't find a sensible reason not to critically review things. It's not looking to disprove something to win fame points, it's about seeing truth to benefit yourself and potentially others. The rewards outweigh the risks, it can be hard at times but when you tackle the hurdles of life you'll feel a sense of mastery. Critical thinking doesn't imply having a critical attitude towards people or rejecting what people say, rather being open-minded, curious and accepting of different opinions is an advantage. They might be right or they might be wrong, as you do not really know you think critically to figure it out. "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstein. I think what is meant is that to believe without having evidence is blind and to know it all is boring as it takes away the joy of discovery and exploration. Science referring to what you know and religion pointing to what more there is to learn. This is taken from the context I understand it in though, it can have several meanings.
Very well explained sir.... I have completely underatood what critical thinking is,because for a long time i was confused about what critical thinking is and how to inculcate in ourselves...
I just had a calculus test today, and i was arguing with my friend exactly about the point you mentioned!! Why do we just apply the formulas we learn in class and be just a passive receivers. I like to proof those formulas and see where they came from and how they are true!! it just helps me understand the material better and the benefits of learning it.
Curiosity, yes Open minded, yes ...but perhaps also, perhaps by asking "what is it about my belief that could be wrong" Also understanding the perspective of your source, i.e. are they emotionally motivated and have an agenda. Consider ego - some people believe what they believe because they cant face being wrong about it (now matter how absurd it is), as well as your own ego if proved wrong, thus, practicing humility.
This is great way to get people to do some independent thinking and I am going to look into more of your videos. The fact that you are making this information available free, and sacrificing your time to do it makes me want to share your videos and material with others. I will also be recommending your website, thanks and all the best to you!
I don't know if anyone still reads this comment but I have a critical question: Don't you get crazy when you analyse and question every little aspect of everything? My hypothesis is that you should just use critical thinking in areas of your life which are important to you. For example: Does it really matter wether you use a ballpen or a pencil to write out the information of this video? Yes, both have their advantages and disadvantages, but in the end, it really doesn't matter and isn't worth thinking about for too long (att least in my opinion is this decision quite irrelevant). What are your ideas about it?
I was thinking about how exhausting that would be, to analyse everything, especially with today's information age with a lot of data thrown at us and we can only digest so much.
exist . Some people dont like the idea of existing because they believe they have to do something in their life , as if being forced to do so. Its tough for those that can not find what they feel makes their life worth living if that makes sense
You make some very valid points that can be applied to engineering students. Critical thinking is not emphasized as much as it should be in the college curriculum. Your video is a decent representation but is missing the idea of knowing the "story" or reasoning behind certain subjects.
Then I guess I've been thinking independently and critically pretty much all along, because I don't believe in being close minded, and I'm always curious about everything I try learning about!! thanks for pointing out that I am a critical independent thinker, and I never looked at it this way, now I know where my mind has been setting all along!! time to get closer to what I didn't even notice about myself, cool man!
I’ve started this about 5 years ago when I discovered your channel but sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who think this way and I would love to find like minded people but why is so hard?
I've watched each and every single video of yours (well not all..most of 'em) and they are all so amazing and this one is the best so far. Thank you for giving such amazing and practical advise
Brilliant. Thanks Leo! I'm a psych student and actually doing some critical thinking about critical thinking led me here. :P I totally 100% agree with everything you said. I believe though you can be a bit of a critical thinker without knowing it. I didn't think I was until I started traveling and I was bombarded with different 'facts' and opinions from what I was exposed to in my own little home bubble. Led me to being a serious critical thinker and rarely accepting something as absolute truth any more. Thank you very much for this video. I will continue viewing your other vids. And I hope to become a highly skilled critical thinker one day :)
Critical thinking is often inspired by 2 or more people that actually are critical thinkers and not just people who apply the label to themselves. Even rarer than a critical thinker is someone who truly is open minded. I am 54 and have been using the Internet since before most people even knew it existed, in all that time I have only found open minded, critical thinking people less than a dozen times. I guess that's why I spend so much time alone. I am surrounded by cows.
Does that impact your social skills for the most part? I hate get togethers because close to 100% of the time people only want small talk (spots, tv, weather) and once anything intellectual is brought up, jokes are made at its expense. People often wonder why I keep to myself as well lol
Not gonna lie bro, you sound like a fat, ugly, lonely slob who's making excuses for his social ineptitude. It's others who don't wanna be around you - not the other way around. You pick a guide book on C++ for example, you follow along and you get the gist of what each small program entails. you get to know some aspects of how each program behavors, but when you are at your computer with no text books no guidance material, just you and your computer and you want to write your own made-up program. you then realize what it is to be a programmer. You then ask yourself I reference alot of material from books, but where is my mental reference collection of programming skills. ??? this is what matters. I walk away completely from the computer, from the books, from the reference material, I sit down with just a pen, pencil, rubber and white blank paper, I write and write, and write, this writing morphs into a algorithm, I then am able to psedocode steps, I then write more, and more and more, from my mental collection of what I can remember, I then begin to structure logically something connective, it's starting to form, starting to start. I feel levels of untested, unclarified success, I know that I now have some capacity to write programming. I am over the moon. I keep going, and going and face more and more challenges, I test snippets of code, some begin to work, many don't and I continue, continue, hoping to reach a understanding. What are your thoughts guys.
That's true what matters is the ultimate connection that is associated with learning programming, without connection one will definitely FAIL at even writing the most basic lines of CODE.
Critical thinking is independent thinking. Generate answers yourself. Socrates method Asking questions. What is making the idea tick. Don't fall for information bombard. Don't rely on anyone. Discover true for yourselve. Stop relying on golden nuggets. Look your mind as a mill that gets information and produce a by product.
there are 4 ways of climbing a cliff: you don't because somebody did - you don't because nobody did - you do because nobody did - you do because everybody did. Choose...
I am so happy that I have been a naturally curious and open minded person. Although, It has taken me away from a conservative family who are very attached in the sentiments dew to their learning from sources of illusion. :(
Good video Leo. You seem to be really good at improvisation. But I'm sure that is just a skill that you've learned to develop over the years of practicing and studying. I like that you said about asking ourselves questions. Anthony Robbins teaches that about always challenging our old beliefs and how by asking questions directs our focus.
I laughed when you got to the part about constantly putting down a book to think about what you have read. It takes me a long time to read a book also lol. Nonetheless I feel I am much better educated than finishing the book quickly by stopping every few pages to think about what I read
I keep watching your videos, delving into all your words and am curious if you know and will share what your sun, moon and rising signs are, if you have ever studied astrology or numerology or sacred geometry. I haven't studied the latter myself.
Very good video but I have a comment: "Value your own opinions over those of others." This can easily be misunderstood. The opinion of an informed 40 year old may be quite different from that of an awakening 20 year old. A certain humility is very necessary to listen (critically, of course) to the opinions of others and not reflexively dismiss them. It is often that what does not make sense today (and is forgotten) becomes an "epiphany" tomorrow. It is best to "file away" unexpected opinions instead of treating them as an obstacle. We all start out with nothing. No one can start from the beginning. It is better to start with the informed opinions of people you respect and then ask them why they believe as they do.
I'm guessing you majored in philosophy, not math, but your explanation of why proofs are important is beyond any my math profs could come up with, ie precisely nothing. Tx.
I'm trying to decide if I'm a critical thinker by going through everything he says and matching it to how I think, wondering and I'm like, oh but I'm doing exactly that xD
Hi leo! I love your videos and admire your authenticity! Sir can you please impart me how to be a better English writer? Like I wanna be ferocious in this field! Please help me out I consider you my true mentor!:)
Do you have video of how to avoid of negative self talk,i am going thorugh a lot of negative thinking,my subconcious mind just keep conceptualizing ,of taking revenge and hate and anger, and i start speaking ill, just because this person just used me and rejected me in the past so i take all the present bad situations and take on the past i have been through and on that person, thinking that it's not just..please!!

+Catherine Lunt Look up who to download videos off of youtube. Use basic editing programs that comes with a Mac (iMovie) or a PC (Movie Maker) to edit the video. There has got to be irony somewhere in editing a video about critical thought.
hi leo i would like have your opinion about my problem. i will not try explain my story yet cuz i still keep trying to find out. i deal problems like lack of focus ,self respect, depression (i think) etc. i went to psygologist to find out my problem but i still try work on that. i have 3 months go in a therapist and seen i stopped problem seems growing. what should i do? i am so desperate when i try fix my life then something comes out and blacks out the system. its like i am doing circles. maybe should i go to a pshyciatrist take medication cuz i have really serious problems like lack of focus and this effecting me dramatically. i try hide myself front of others but the most of the time not working. the closer person to me is my uncle who i tell them everything cuz she suggest me the therapist but she keeps saying to me that i should try harder but i dont believe in myself anymore. i loose myself. i would like have your opinion, sry if i didnt explain this good to you, i tried my best..
Medication is usually NOT a good solution for psychological problems. If you want to improve your focus, you should start meditating daily. Check out my video on meditation.
What are you doing about the problem? Maybe if you're thinking that medication and therapy is an answer, then maybe you haven't come to your senses of reality. Maybe your just not as focused in school or work as you need to be because your stuck on the idea of a false reality that's not your fault. Success is possible, and a lack of focus does not require medication, but maybe dedication. I don't know, I'm rambling.
I have a suggestion. When you write the word "I" referring to yourself, be sure and make it a capital letter. I think English is not your first language. I am not trying to be a grammar cop. I think I speak to the source of your problem. Make your I a capital I. This is your most important word. Give it the importance it deserves. Good luck.
I Would Like To Know What To Do Because College is Hard I Have Spent 4 Years in and Out of Community College I Was Recently Dismissed I Need Help I'm 22
jessyjc551 Yes I would also like to elaborate on your topic as well, I wasn't the best in class and now I'd like to make a new life with with clearer thinking!👍🏼🎓
Critical thinking you might want to see why the cows are running if there is a wild fire you should put out the fire or if can't, get out of there also and alert someone who can, that's why they have fire departments. You put up fences to keep the cows from running off cliffs, there are also ditches on side of roads deer run into sometimes killing themselves, of course you don't know if it did or not if did not see it happen it might have been knocked in the ditch by a car, if you see one trapped in a ditch you don't know why exactly maybe it did to avoid a car or just didn't know ditch was there. Also people that fall asleep driving can end up in a ditch also so you don't know if they were driving drunk or asleep at the wheel, well now days might also be on cell phone not looking where going and missed the curve.
I slightly disagree with keeping yourself away from mass media, internet and TV. Thinking for yourself is an important skill indeed, but blaming a lack of such skills on information doesn't really make a strong case. It works in a sort of relationship, without the input what would you question? It can also serve as pointers towards things you didn't know and might as well serve you and your purpose. Critical thinking is neither accepting nor rejecting knowledge, it's not choosing a position about whether it's true or false. It's mainly just asking "how is it really?", the rest of the questions are just sub-questions of this main question. It's also crucial to be aware of how you know what you think you know and prioritize it correctly. What is directly experienced and observed is near impossible to deny, despite difficulty expressing it in words or logically understanding it. What is read in the newspaper and seen on TV can be questionable considering factors KNOWN to influence media. In many ways effective critical thinking can be hard to grasp for the target crowd you're attempting to reach. As it often loops around, many things collapses in on itself, contradicts itself in paradoxical ways and some pieces of knowledge are only true because another piece of knowledge supports it. So it would probably be kind of you to point out that it's normal to be severely confused before you start getting the point, which incidentally makes people beautifully integrate into the larger society and have them thinking they are unique. It seems to me though that critical thinking is one of the most common things in today's western society, but it works though. Sure fooled me, or did it? xD Also your entire video can be seen as collapsing in on itself. You're telling people to stay away from media, paradoxically this implies staying away from this as well. No wonder you have few views, lol. Anyways, I don't care all that much, but what I do appreciate is your effort and good intentions though.
Actualized.org I'm aware of this and thus limit exposure when it becomes too much, but I don't find it reasonable to just never use it. Off topic, I think you could be interested in this: philosophysuicides.wordpress.com/2014/06/08/philosophy-suicides-3/
I disagree with dwerg2k that is debatable, they used to not have tv's 200 years ago but look at the amount of scientists, pioneers etc,. the number was massive. Nowadays, we've not seen any genius since Einstein. Again, the media fucks you up! and thank you, I don't like getting fucked or raped without even knowing it

"Knowledge" and "Wisdom" are not the same. Wisdom is far more important, I would say essential to the process of critical thinking.
Agreed. Wisdom is applying your knowledge as opposed to repeating it.
I understand!
Knowledge is what gained from books but wisdom is what you know how to apply it.

Consider ego - some people believe what they believe because they cant face being wrong about it (now matter how absurd it is), as well as your own ego if proved wrong, thus, practicing humility.
one attitude towards reading is you are not trying to finish reading it, but actually think about it:) SO TRUE!
Why is nobody talking about how independent thinking helps a lot with anxiety?
Makes me more anxious and depressed sometimes
@@fionasmith6686 Same, but nevertheless, it's still necessary for personal growth
You described me perfectly. Yes I guess it does affect my social skills insofar as I don't get along with cows.
Not gonna lie bro, you sound like a fat, ugly, lonely slob who's making excuses for his social ineptitude. It's others who don't wanna be around you - not the other way around.

Darcy Peal Wow, that was such a witty response, did you learn that from the Critical Thinking video? Grats
🦋So important to remember you control your mind when you master that perspective everything gets easier
Not only do I like the thought processes of Leo, I like his attitude.
probably the best one i have heard so far
I also just like the way you talk, there's something elegant or dancelike about it
You pick a guide book on C++ for example, you follow along and you get
the gist of what each small program entails. you get to know some
aspects of how each program behavors, but when you are at your computer
with no text books no guidance
material, just you and your computer and you want to write your own
made-up program. you
then realize what it is to be a programmer. You then ask yourself I
reference alot of
material from books, but where is my mental reference collection of
programming
skills. ??? this is what matters. I walk away completely from the
computer, from the books, from the reference material, I sit down with
just a pen, pencil, rubber and white blank paper, I write and write, and
write, this writing morphs into a algorithm, I then am able to
psedocode steps, I then write more, and more and more, from my mental
collection of
what I can remember, I then begin to structure logically something
connective, it's starting to form, starting to start. I feel levels of
untested, unclarified success, I know that I now have some capacity to
write programming. I am over the moon. I keep going, and going and face
more and more challenges, I test snippets of code, some begin to work,
many don't and I continue, continue, hoping to reach a understanding.
What are
your thoughts guys.
let's connect
That's true what matters is the ultimate connection that is associated with learning programming, without connection one will definitely FAIL at even writing the most basic lines of CODE.
That's why old school programmers are the best.
Excellent! I am recommending all my friends on Facebook warch this.
Leo! I love your videos. I feel like your explanations are so objectuve and well articulated. Ive rewatched ypur videos for the past 3 years ❤️
Critical thinking is independent thinking.
Generate answers yourself.

That's awesome dude; just what I was looking for.
Thanks
As a psychotherapy student...this HELPS. A lot :-)
This is perhaps the most critical video at actualized.org
I am so happy that I have been a naturally curious and open minded person. Although, It has taken me away from a conservative family who are very attached in the sentiments dew to their learning from sources of illusion. :(
'Well, if you're close-minded, you're basically fucked'. Haha! Leo's deadpan delivery. Dude you crack me up.
great one to find , thanks again Leo
Keep up the good work. Added value to my learning.
Thank you so much for this video.. I think it will help a lot1
Open minded is good!
Be creative criticize thinking 🤍
thanks so much for sharing such great thoughts 💭 just amazing:)
For me, to be a critical thinker is to be a free a thinker and free up your mind completely from outer laws.
Very good video but I have a comment:
"Value your own opinions over those of others." This can easily be misunderstood.
"This is perfect for you. Go ahead and sign up". How do I know that is true?
Leo, maybe white or red t-shirt???
Why?
Hi Leo, can you make a video on 'over thinking'?
Nice video I’d like to learn more. Thanks.
I'm guessing you majored in philosophy, not math, but your explanation of why proofs are important is beyond any my math profs could come up with, ie precisely nothing. Tx.
Interesting & very helpful. Now I am aware of changes that need to be made.
My wife ask me what I am going to do when I retire next year. My response. Live in my on mind for the first time.
Praise God- So glad you made this! You really understand!
+Cody Morrison The irony is mind blowing!!!
Great information, I highly recommended to watch this video regarding the critical thinking!
I'm trying to decide if I'm a critical thinker by going through everything he says and matching it to how I think, wondering and I'm like, oh but I'm doing exactly that xD
Leo What are your thoughts about Drwenian evolution?
Loved the analogy you used, made me laugh!! Great video, thanks Leo!
Hi Leo in your booklist, do you have any good books that can help to improve critical thinking?
+Tristan Berry www.criticalthinking.org/pages/join-the-critical-thinking-community/744/ is a good free resource.
How I used critical thinking: read the text excerpt instead of the video because it is faster.
Nice speech. Think. Don't be lazy.
Watch mechanics of beliefs before and after watching this
What lighting and background do you use?
Hi leo! I love your videos and admire your authenticity! Sir can you please impart me how to be a better English writer? Like I wanna be ferocious in this field! Please help me out I consider you my true mentor!:)
Thanks leo very helpful & I found it fun
puedes poner los videos con CC en español? Preferentemente no las traducciones de google. Sino, las traducciones por personas.
Truth with the capital T.. I love the analogies Leo please continue making videos! This world could use a more sensible viewpoint
What works for you!!
Duly noted.
Second that.
I really satisfied from that video !!! right a way I start to think critically.
I cover that in many many videos. Here are a few:
Negative Thoughts - The Origin Of Negative Thinking & How To Eliminate It Forever
Mindfulness - How To Actually Practice Mindfulness And Create Emotional Self-Mastery
Letting Go Of The Past - How To Get Over The Past In Minutes
How To Stop Worrying - The Fundamentals of Eliminating Worry
Positive Thinking - The Key To Thinking Positive
Optimism - How To Become Optimisitic Right Now
Love the video Leo!
There is nothing tangible in this video!
Thanks Leo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey I would love to show some of your videos to my students, but I can't because of your language. How about some edited versions?
Actualized.org
kk thanks i hope find out something there...
+fan of the best Fan my best wishes, try and then reflect and try some more. My best wishes, progress is possible.
I have a suggestion. When you write the word "I" referring to yourself, be sure and make it a capital letter. I think English is not your first language. I am not trying to be a grammar cop. I think I speak to the source of your problem. Make your I a capital I. This is your most important word. Give it the importance it deserves. Good luck.
Thinking about life more than myself?
can anyone tell me the applications of critical thinking .
This is the first time I seen Leo's side face
Your wisdom is profound. Thank you! -Carla
I don't regret watching this video ☺
Thing. Don't be lazy, thing.
Bravo!
RAM GOPAL VARMA IS ONE OF THE GREATEST CRITICAL THINKER IN INDIA
You are amazing man!
My question tho, is wether my thinking is credible. Cuz I do lack a whole lot of experience with reality.
just subbed dude!!
very grateful
it is the question that drives us
I'm currently Performing a critical analysis on a comment that is critical analyzing a video critically analyzing critical analysis.
I think been deep person and think of everything it will makes you nervous 😩
Sure fooled me, or did it? xD
Also your entire video can be seen as collapsing in on itself. You're telling people to stay away from media, paradoxically this implies staying away from this as well. No wonder you have few views, lol. Anyways, I don't care all that much, but what I do appreciate is your effort and good intentions though.
Try going 1 year without TV, news, and media, and just see how the quality of your life skyrockets.
Again, the media fucks you up! and thank you, I don't like getting fucked or raped without even knowing it
nexypointy Stephen Hawking is pretty genius. There are many geniuses in the modern world. But yeah, media isn't helping create more of them.
Actualized.org i was going to mention him but didn't think of including him just to get my ideas across. Oh and that japanese-american guy.
Thank you for this video
