I agree with the sentiment and the distribution of cc being it's biggest issue. However the idea of high BP low risk fighting stab is good for the game because in future generations Fp wasn't made irrelevant because of cc existing it was the other shit that made it terrible. All of scarf uturn volt and better and more distributed priority make naked punch unviable and unusable outside of dedicated sub punchers which went the way of the dodo after gen 5. FP would have gone out of the meta regardless of cc.
Speaking of low-risk moves, a lot of Mons get Body Slam in ADV and I played some games back in 2016 where everyone had banded Mons using it. Thank you for the net.battle reference! It made my day.
Focus punch is one of my favorite moves in history, and is one that I use till this day, the ability to smack the opponent with a 150 base power nuke simply for reading a switch which isnt reasonably hard considering how many switches happpen in singles is so good, Medi is a particularly fun abuser of it because later gens it doesnt get CC, just HJK, which is high risk/reward in its own right, so sometimes i just have both on the same set cuz if I need the harder hit and I can afford it, why not go for it
I was thinking about focus punch in adv today and I decided to look it up because I knew, somehow, that you would have an hour long discussion video about it, and here it is. Love the content as always
Close Combat was a mistake. Superpower, Cross Chop, and Focus Punch would all have been viable, interesting high-power fighting moves with unique downsides that create strategic tension and decision making if it weren't for CC invalidating them by existing.
Hard agree. Fighting is so much better as a "I can take a risk" or prediction focused high coverage type, when we already have ground type as a high coverage low risk type. And it makes so much sense lorewise that in a world where everything else can thunderbolt and fire blast and all that that punching would be pretty situational and high risk.
Close Combat, Focus Blast, Stealth Rock, Electivire, Dusknoir, Rhyperior, Fire-types in the Sinnoh Dex (the coldest region in the PkMN world), what else? Did I forget anything? Is ANYTHING Gen 4 did okay? People even started saying the Phys-Sp split should've never happened!!😂 Bro Mons had to use HIDDEN POWER as a STAB MOVE before Gen 4. Look the thing is: Close Combat, yes yes. What people don't get is that in Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HGSS just about EVERY POKEMON that existed from Gen 1-4 got buffed to the max, bringing a kind of balance to these games. Yes, of course some got buffed more, some less, Close Combat is overpowered? Well... BRAVE BIRD also exists! The Phys-Sp split, reworked abilities, improved movesets and new super-strong moves given to ALL Pokemon, old or new is often overlooked. Can Gen 4 ever get its flowers? Compare the movesets of Gen 1 Pokemon from Gens 1-4. In Gen 1 to 2 and mostly even 3 the movesets don't change that much and in Gen 3 there's still Mons without a Phys/Special STAB move (except Hidden Power, which was NEVER ment to be used like that) until Level 100 and in Gen 3 there's still Mons learning Screech at Level 69. Gen 4 reworked, invented and fixed so many things but no... hahaha look at funny slow HP bars! The only wish. For people to see what good Diamond and Pearl did. They put in sooo much work, it's insane.
Me! 🙌🏼 Words can't describe how happy I am to find a channel that's still into competitive ADV. It's been a pleasure watching this for 46 mins straight.
I would give money to TH-camrs if I was an idiot, too. Thanks for your great work, every vid I end up watching gets me back on the ladder. Best Meta of all time
7:10 that's funny because on ladder evaluating risk/reward is the opposite a lot of the time. I would normally fire blast in that scenario because I have a breloom for the ttar but if they stay in fire blast is the way to make progress. Ladder players are very bad at evaluating their win conditions and their ways of stopping mine.
I ran a Max Atk/Max HP Adamant Dusclops (Wisp/Focus Punch/Shadow Ball/Pain Split) on an ADV team, and it was always a blast to catch mons with the Focus Punch who came in expecting the usual passive Dusclops. Shadow Ball actually wasn't bad either since it was Physical too.
Dude I left everything Pokemon when SWSH came out, and didn't play competitive in Gen 7 because I hated Z Moves. I love you content. You are amazing. If you were a teacher you'd be my favorite lecturer.
Thanks so much as always BKC. Speaking of fighting types, is there any chance you could do a deep dive on Medicham's role in ADV? From my (limited) understanding it is one of the better BL pokemon and I love the concept of a glass cannon who hits like slaking but doesn't have to deal with Truant. Either way, thanks for your time.
@@tylerd1297 I'm aware, I've watched it a couple times, but it really isn't the kind of deep dive that I'm talking about. BKC goes much more in depth on his own channel since he doesn't need to cover multiple generations, nor is he restricted to keeping a video relatively breezy/easy to watch. There's a lot of nuance that is difficult to obtain unless you're in the know already, reading smogon summaries and watching FSG only goes so far.
@@Fizzicles Agree. I want to get into ADV and having read the forums, watched the videos as well as a few replays I can definitely see how Medicham can be an actual power house of the tier and one that also seems like a lot of fun to use (although I would definitely not try it in my first few tries at the tier lol, definitely don't have the knowledge to use it, but knowing how it works exactly in the metagame and how to deal with it would be appreciated I think)
While it's probably beyond the scope of this video, I think it'd be interesting if they buffed focus punch's utility. For example, maybe have it not count as an "attack" for the purpose of Sucker Punch, or have it not activate Truant? I feel like the move's inherent riskiness would still keep the move well below the level of CC even with these buffs, but it'd be nice to have a reason to use focus punch over CC (granted, I suppose literally any attack into focus punch could be considered a "sucker punch," but there's also no real explanation for sucker punch to fail against status moves/switching that couldn't also be argued for focus punch, or any reduced-priority move for that matter.)
On the topic of focus punch what do you think of this focus punch dragonite set? Dragonite is my favourite pokemon and I've been struggling to get him to do anything useful in ADV. Leftovers, Rash nature, 60 ATK, 252 SPA, 196 SPE, Fire blast Hidden Power Grass Focus Punch Ice beam/Thunder. The idea behind the set is to have a mixmence like wall breaker with Focus Punch and Ice Beam/Thunder instead of Brick Break/Dragon Claw.
it's a blend of mixmence and mixtar (if you use ice beam, which you should). it's good! focus punch is nice but you can also consider brick break which makes it easier to use and more reliable in 1v1s against tar, lax, bliss
@@BKCplaysPokemonI thought about Brick Break as well but the problem with the move is that it turns Dragonite into an inferior Salamence in my opinion. The reason why I considered Thunder is that it is a guaranteed 2HKO against milotic in sand (and I really hate that thing). But I agree that Ice beam is better overall. Your channel is great BTW and me accidentally stumbling on it a couple of weeks ago made me start playing ADV OU.
BKC if you go into "import/export" for your team, and then type in the name of the pokemon or paste its set there you can have a team with multiple pokemon. And for in instant 12 you just copy the original team and paste it.
This made me think of something... So you know how once Blissey Seismic Tosses Hera on a FP and doesn't see Lefites so it assumes CB? What if you ran Black Belt to not only bluff CB, but catch the Blissey STossing again and outright KO it? I forget if Gen 3 only had that item as a 10% boost or 20%. This set probably isn't good, but just food for thought y'know?
Yeah, hits Lax kind of hard and confuses it. Hilariously not a move many mons want to switch into because of confusion. Also a better hit on Tar and Blissey, though it's not the main draw.
Okay so I really feel like I’m missing something. Obviously it’s going to destroy a T tar switch in, but will the opponent not have a chance to get Tar out and get a resist in? Like once Tar is in and they see “tightening it’s focus” will they not be able to just switch again and let something else eat it? I know nothing wants to take it but it does seem kind of easy to play around.
To save BKC having to fully elaborate on the reply he was kind enough to leave to a comment on a 2+ year old video: The way focus punch works is that it’s a negative priority move, but it still hits on the same turn it was clicked on. That means that if you click focus punch, you will always go last that turn (unless your opponent also clicks a negative priority move, which isn’t relevant here). If your opponent does not deal damage to you that turn, focus punch will go off successfully. If they do, it will fail. So in the case that you click focus punch and your opponent clicks “switch to TTar”, the switch will happen, then the punch, which will succeed because switching to TTar does not do damage to the opposing ‘mon. Thus TTar will get his sandy stuffing punched out of him. Tl;dr: focus punch is not 2-turn like Fly. It’s 1-turn but always goes second like Counter/mirror coat. Tar switches get rocked.
