Well I have had mine since 2001, the tank has slowly been seeping at the seam and now is completely split. Just put a new starter in today and noticed the tank, thanks for the info!
I have this exact mower, which has been garage-keeping since I got it. To be honest, I was in the US Army and many of our yards were tiny so it never got used that much. But, it is still going strong and this next weekend I plan to go through the entire thing and update the battery (die hard in it is 10 years old), new filter, oil, air filter, and new gator blades. Thanks for this video. Great seeing someone bring a good mower back to life. BTW, we have 2 acres now and I have a big Ariens zero turn but I just can't give up the old mower so it may go to my son's house soon.
For a few years, I took the deck off od mine so my Mother could use it in her garden to pull a wagon around. She got a Cub Cadet ZT1 with a trailer hitch, so I have the Craftsman back. That is a great machine.
Thank you for sharing. This is helping me get an idea for how to replace the fuel line on my great grandpas old Sears craftsman lawn tractor built 1993. 18hp twin Briggs ….very similar to the one you repaired although it appears my model didn’t have a heat that heat shield that bolts to the engine. When you removed that shield there were two loops on bolted opposite sides of the engine. Are they support brackets of some sort? Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and making great content.
I have this exact one, but I am new to this mower. I put a new battery in it, and now it won't kick on. The engine will try and turn over, but the open part just spins and spins. Is it the alternator?
And in addition, adjust the valves. Chances are, it's never been done (many never think about it). I thought I was having carb issues and once I adjusted the valses, all that went away. Mine starts like a Ford now. Bump the key and it's running.
I was hoping to see you take the gas tank out. I did everything else 5 years ago to one of these with the 20 V-Twin. Today, my gas tank started leaking.
@tinkerscorner On one of the videos I do show how to get to the gas tank and explain how to take the fuel tank straps off and Fuel line replacement. There are 3 parts I'm pretty sure its Part 1 or 2
I made a video on how to remove the gas tank but lost the footage. You will have to take the rear fender piece off. It comes off as an assembly. Remove bolts inside springs under seat Remove brackets under foot rest on each side. It will then lift off. Start from the back lift up and pull back as your lifting up. There is a bolt on each side of dash that will allow foot rest to clear easier to remove. Take the one bolt out on each side. Once you start lifting the fender off you should see the bolt footrest hits on each side. I would Replace fuel line while your in there
@@sartingarage8045 Thank you sharing those details. Im also going to install a shut off valve although it may be a little tight finding an accessible spot on the line…perhaps before the fuel filter? Thanks again for sharing.
Pat Cocking that Gas Tank is obsolete. I got lucky and found this one I think Ebay or Amazon. I will check and see if I can find another one. Will post a link here
First video I have seen battery in front gas in the back
As soon as I saw the smokin dart above the gas tank, I knew I found the channel I needed 😂

I believe the hoops your talking about are for pulling the engine. Usually they are one on the back and one on the front opposite of each other.
@@sartingarage8045 thanks a lot for replying so quickly to my questions and sharing insight. Good day to you.
Where can I get thar gas cap😊
@davidyoung7955

@rainliongod7493
No it's Not anything to do with charging system.
Most Likely a Fuel issue.
Carburetor Clean and rebuild.
May check for spark also.
And in addition, adjust the valves. Chances are, it's never been done (many never think about it). I thought I was having carb issues and once I adjusted the valses, all that went away. Mine starts like a Ford now. Bump the key and it's running.

thanks for this vedio
Hey there, I've got the same mower. My gas tank is split in the same spot. How'd you get the old tank out of there?
I made a video on how to remove the gas tank but lost the footage.
You will have to take the rear fender piece off. It comes off as an assembly.
Remove bolts inside springs under seat
Remove brackets under foot rest on each side. It will then lift off. Start from the back lift up and pull back as your lifting up.
There is a bolt on each side of dash that will allow foot rest to clear easier to remove.
Take the one bolt out on each side.

That's where I would put a shut off valve.
I can't find a replacement gas tank for this mower. Do you have any extra you can sell?
@FiveFishAudio The gas tanks are obsolete
But I will research and see if I can find one
