Well done. I am swapping a motor out from one mower to another so I will be removing twice. your video was exceptionally helpful . thanks for making this video👍
I work on small engines. I always shop vac then pressure wash first before the air gun comes out. I drain the gas tank. Plug the plug. Drain the oil. Its cost effective in the long run. Makes doing the rest way easier.
Thanks very much for this video. Very informative, appreciate the tips about tapping for mounting bolts and anti-seize on the pulley bolt and shaft. Doing a Kohler Courage swap tomorrow so I like to have a list of steps to make it go smoothly. Seems like it may be a little quicker to swap the exhaust pipes before dropping in the new one, leaving the bolts a little loose to make slipping them into the muffler easy.
Thank you for making these videos. I have a craftsman dlt 3000 with a 20hp Kohler. It’s going on 15 years old but could be confused with brand new. Only thing major I’ve had to do to it (didn’t have to but I want it to last another 15 years) is restore the deck. I pulled it last summer and sand blasted it, primed and painted it, and replaced trundles and the glide plate that was starting to notch. Deck looks factory new now again. Can you tell I’m proud? Lol
Very Helpful, thank you. I am going to pay someone else to do it, but I wanted to know what it involved. Very clear and if I had more muscles and the right tools I would be tempted to have a go. Because i have my pressure washing equipment on my pick up truck. i was thinking about using a motor like this for a pressure washer. The question is do they make a gear reducer that is L-shaped to mount a pump on it?
There probably is. I determined years ago that I just need to tighten them buggers pretty much TIGHT as they can go without breaking or stripping them!

The tip on using a 3/8"-16 tap was crucial for me. Saved me a lot of agony. Took me about 2h(ish) to do the engine swap. Considering the B&S mechanic wanted $1200 to fix my mower and B&S sold me an engine for $850, it was a huge save for me. Now to rebuild the other one and figure out what's wrong with it.
Even today's Chinese mowers, snowblowers, etc., will last a long time if properly maintained and not too badly abused. I bought a cheap Poulan push mover about 9 years ago for $150 new. I've hit rocks and stumps with it many times and it still works great. I watch the oil and usually change it every year. I sharpen the blade with a table top power grinder. After sitting all winter, the Poulan usually starts by the 3rd pull. After that, 1st pull.
Not to mention the labor cost from him to replace it. Literally could have bought a new one for cheaper. But the fact that they ran it without oil for 2 years leads me to believe they aren't very intelligent.
Yeah and I wouldn’t pay no labor I got my own shop at least clean all areas pressure washer not towel and pulley being installed without even wiping smdh
Let's say 5 hours, OK? My old exhaust wouldn't bolt up to the new block. 90 degree spin. Had to cut the exhaust and spin it, then weld it back together. Certain bolts had a spring and pulley that demanded to beremoved. I saved 2000 dollars anyway. 400 dollars per hour for my work. Not bad. 😊
Stay safe. I only mention it because it looks very similar to an ATV lift that landed an ATV on a family member of mine and injured him. Not life threatening, but a permanent injury, he was lucky.
Ignore the trolls. Your video is fine. The only thing I worry about is the positive side of the battery should be disconnected to avoid the battery exploding if the Positive lead you removed from the starter became grounded by accident. The quick oil change fitting I would remove and use plug, makes oil changes messy, but prevents the oil from coming out like it did for your client. I assume your client in your video must really like the tractor to spend that much ($1000 in 2017) on a replacement 24 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine. I assume same engine but rated one horsepower less due to delta in how power was measured. I recently priced out how much it would be today to replace my year 2003 GT5000 lawn tractor and was astonished to see how much prices have increased over the years. I paid $1600 in year 2003 for the GT5000. Today to replace with Husqvarna 25 horsepower engine with 48-inch cut is $3600 via Lowes’s home centers if you opt for the Kawasaki engine and about $700 less if you opt for the Kohler engine for the same lawn tractor. Kawasaki engines and parts are expensive so I would opt for the Kohler engine if was my decision which engine to use as replacement for my GT5000. My 2003 Craftsman GT5000 with 48-inch deck is remarkably like the lawn tractor you have in your video I think was made by Husqvarna. My tractor has Kohler Command 25 Horsepower CV730-0017. I live in southeastern Florida and like having so much power with a three blade 48 inch cut that does not bog down when the grass is high in the summer months. The quick oil change fitting on my engine has opened and lost all the engine oil, but I heard the change in the engine sound and shut down before my engine was destroyed. When I bought the lawn tractor in year 2003, I had people tell me to remove the quick oil change fitting, but I did not listen until I nearly destroyed my engine. I see many videos internet posted where the engines failed and broke piston rods because the quick oil change fitting came open at the wrong time. Most people part out the lawn tractors when the engines fail because the bits and parts are worth plenty. For example, the Husqvarna engine bolts in your video production are special and I just paid $6 each plus shipping. The Husqvarna 15 mm spacer that goes under the big movable tension pully under the engine I misplaced and had to pay another $6 plus shipping or try to find a spacer at the hardware stores, so I used a socket as a spacer until the Husqvarna spacer arrived. Recently (3/16/2021) my engine sump oil seal failed and the engine was on fire because I saw the smoke when the seal came out and the engine oil hit the very hot muffler, but I tried to drive the lawn tractor back to the house. It caught fire not far from my tool shed and I was able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. I replaced the oil seal and coated the melted wires with paintable vinyl tape until I can buy and install a new wiring harness. The Briggs and Stratton engine in your video looks very much like my Kohler Command 25 Horsepower CV730-0017. I have my lawn tractor back in regular service now and I do not see any major flaws in your video, so good job and thanks for sharing. Dennis Jon Sytsma Homestead Florida sytsmad@bellsouth.net

I have a MTD yard machine with a briggs twin II that runs great, well maintained but the tractor is falling apart and I’m tired of putting money into it and it doesn’t handle well and cuts badly cocked to one side of belly, tie rods shot, etc, etc. I obtained a john deere LT133 for free but had to put several parts on it to run properly. The deere rides like a cadillac and cuts super straight, handles well with little flex on hills but the new carb keeps flooding due to trash somewhere in the fuel line. I replaced all rubber lines from tank to fuel pump all except for the metal fuel line that runs under the inspection cover on top of engine (I think i’m getting rust from that metal line.) I could replace it yes but the Koehler engine that’s in the deere doesent have much power when I get it running and I’d love to swap that briggs twin II into it. It looks like crankshaft diameters match so I would swap the engine from MTD to the deere and most likely all the electronics from the MTD as well. Not sure if fuel system will work as the deere tank is under the drivers seat and in the MTD it’s higher than the engine mounted to the firewall area. Jeff - thanks for the video. I'm going to have to get my engine replaced. Mower is 15 years old and I have already lost two valve rods into the engine. Always the right side - facing the front. Really should have the engine broken down to retrieve the rods and hopefully no further damage is done. Will have to have it done - can't do myself. Thinking that is might be better to have new engine verses buying a new rider. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
I found this video very helpful. How did you know that the engine swap would fit? I am looking to do the same, swapping my old BS engine for a new one.
I have a L111 John Deere the motor runs good and so does the deck but when I let the brake pedal out something under the mower starts rattling and when I push the break it stops I'm thinking maybe one of the pulleys is gone bad
I am building a racing mower out of an old 1980,s murray lawn mower it has a 12.5 hp Briggs single cylinder Flathead i want to see if i could hook up a gauge to see how much oil i have
While few know that was the original IH displacement too, they would make terrible mower engines as they are not fan-cooled and run hot. It's been done of course but engines like the Honda CX500 make much more practical tractor engines. Much love for my 1973 74" S&S stroker but it won't find a home in a mower. If someone wanted to do it using the stock clutch and replacing the mower clutch (on a REAL yard tractor) with a PTO slipper clutch or a plain coupling would be the way to go.
I enjoyed the Vid. I see some TH-camrs commented on your cleanliness. Well too each there own. You fixed it and thats what matters. Good job. Now if numnuts remembers to put oil in it and change it every season maybe he wont be back for a while😂🤣.
Any tips on finding a ground point? My new engine matches this one fairly well but I can't for the life of me spot a good ground point. On the old engine it was some three or four inch long bolt going into the block, but this Briggs has nothing of the sort that I can see.
Pardon me for asking, but I assume that the old 25 hp. B&S engine is locked. Is that correct? If not, did a compression test or vacuum bore test show anything? The 25 hp. B&S is a tough old bird. Also, how did you end up with a 24 hp. instead of the 25 hp.? That would have made me pissed off.
The quick oil change fittings destroy engines all the time and the owner is blamed. I would remove the fitting and use a pipe plug like in the old days so the oil does not come out of the engine in the middle of a job.
The older I get the heavier these engines weigh. I know because my back lets me know. A few years ago a guy sold me a 17.5 Twin I/C Briggs. He said it was a good running engine. Started it up and it seemed to run fine. So the other day I put it on my mower. Checked the gas oil and tires. When I went to cut the grass it seemed ok, except for the big puffs of blue smoke. After about 30 min or so I it stalled out. When I tried to start it, it was as if it were locked up. Did not want to spin over. So the next day it spun over by hand just like what you would expect. I bumped the switch and it started right up. Got it back to the house and filled it up with oil and checked the gas. Before I started it I made sure the oil was at the top of the line. 30 min of run time it was below the bottom line. Odd thing when I went to start it this time it sounded as if something metal was bumping around inside. After its running it seems to run fine. Not sure if there is anything I can do for the engine, except get another one. I did try Lucas Oil seemed to help a little but every 30 to 45 min I have to put more in. I think I got screwed on this deal.
If you open the bottom of the box first, and then stand it on the open bottom with the flaps away from the sides, then you can lift the box off the engine easily.
Now I'd like to do an motor swap on my mtd yard machines but I wanna convert from tecumseh to briggs. Is wiring harnesses similar, and is there other things I should change or have to modify?
I have an old toro 267h 22hp kohler. Cant figure out why it wont start. It has spark has a new fuel pump new carburetor new fuel lines. Last fall it would only run when the choke was on. So I replaced all that. I looked up how much new engines lol over 1500. I can buy a whole new mower for that.
It sounds like the initial issue was carburetor related. If you replaced the carb with a cheapo replacement that may be the problem now. If you still have the old carburetor. just clean and rebuild it.
Just had a Briggs and Stratton blow up today after 8 years of torture. Do most motors line up alike? And are most shafts the same length? I’ve gotta do a motor swap soon.
Jeff's little engine service said............ 25 Horsepower V Twin RIDER Lawn mower model Motor ("Same as All HP models") So is this the same process to R&R an 18.5 Horsepower Briggs and Stratton motor??
Hope it is better than the 20HP twin I had. Thy had air pockets in the cam and blew the engine with 320 hours on it. They said I got dirt in the engine, but you can see the air pockets in the cam. I still have the engine. BRIGGS would NOT do ANYTHING about it. They didn't want even talk to me about it. They had a lot of those bad engines a few years back. Don't forget the plastic flywheel they use!

I like to first power wash a mower before I work on it.
This one was a mess! I think it had been leaking oil for awhile...
Jeff's Little Engine Service p poop
My troy bilt has a dead 18 horse single cylinder intek would I be fine to put a 13 horse single cylinder engine In it?
yes that should work fine.
what should i do with a self propelled sears mower thats shot. The scrap yard will not give me enough. It needs new motor and blade. What do you think
Give it to the scrap yard and move on!
Much easier to swap an engine than to repair it in many circumstances just shame engines are so expensive
I found a used 14HP Vanguard V Twin that I'm gonna swap out from my 12HP flat head. The flat head Is flooding the oil with metal so why not.
Will briggs 8 hp and 12 hp interchange bolt patterns?
yes
I have a L111 John Deere the motor runs good and so does the deck but when I let the brake pedal out something under the mower starts rattling and when I push the break it stops I'm thinking maybe one of the pulleys is gone bad
yes probably the drive belt actuator pulley
@@JeffsLittleEngineService thanks I will check it out tomorrow sometime
I am building a racing mower out of an old 1980,s murray lawn mower it has a 12.5 hp Briggs single cylinder Flathead i want to see if i could hook up a gauge to see how much oil i have
Donovan Bryant oil pressure gauge is easy to make work
How did you find a compatible engine?
got a part# from Brigg's website
Damn fine job. Would love to see an old Ironhead 883 powering a riding mower.
Carolina Smoke Wagon was thinking that for my old cub cadet, but was worried about the clutch
Hi I was wondering if it's possible to swap a weedeater one 8.75 stratton in to a 2019 troybilt bronco?
Why would you do that? Thats a very underpowered engine for a lawn tractor like a bronco
Is that motor still good will it run
Yep it still ran I sold it for $120.00
I enjoyed the Vid. I see some TH-camrs commented on your cleanliness. Well too each there own. You fixed it and thats what matters. Good job. Now if numnuts remembers to put oil in it and change it every season maybe he wont be back for a while😂🤣.
Did I miss how you took Pully off what nut you took off ..
Any tips on finding a ground point? My new engine matches this one fairly well but I can't for the life of me spot a good ground point. On the old engine it was some three or four inch long bolt going into the block, but this Briggs has nothing of the sort that I can see.
use any bolt on the body to conn gd wire the whole mower will be grounded
Pardon me for asking, but I assume that the old 25 hp. B&S engine is locked. Is that correct? If not, did a compression test or vacuum bore test show anything? The 25 hp. B&S is a tough old bird. Also, how did you end up with a 24 hp. instead of the 25 hp.? That would have made me pissed off.
Hello Jeff. Can I replace my 17.5 Briggs and Stratton engine on my garden tractor with a 14.5 engine
Yep
i liked the part where you used the thinner wrench!! lol looked legit
Didn't even engage the nut 🤣
Did he keep oil in it this time or will we get to see another engine swap?
A patient lift will save your back. I use them for Harley engines. They also have non-marring casters and fit through standard doorways.
I agree and a Honda GX 630 is really heavy
Love that dog!
Beau, right? is that how you write it?
His full name is Bocephus
he's a good one and very smart
How old is he 8?
12 years old. He is 1/2 Golden retriever and 1/2 Border Collie
Thanx for vid! Did you get any blue smoke from new engine?
nope
Which new , preferably English style Briggs and Stratton engine, would you recommend to install in a Westwood T1200?Very useful video though!
Any Briggs engine is a good one!
Thanks. Do you know which Briggs model is best for a Westwood T1200?
@@JeffsLittleEngineService not true.
Great video! Thank you for sharing 👍
I agree, good information, Not perfect, but useful!
If you open the bottom of the box first, and then stand it on the open bottom with the flaps away from the sides, then you can lift the box off the engine easily.
Yep because they may have gotten wrong engine. Again 😊
25ho down to a 24hp. I'd say downgraded but I have the 24hp lol. Good video
After you used the tap for the threads, did you install the engine using the original mounting bolts or the included self tapping mounting bolts?
I used the original bolt
@@JeffsLittleEngineService what torque did you use ?
Thank You !!!
Now I'd like to do an motor swap on my mtd yard machines but I wanna convert from tecumseh to briggs. Is wiring harnesses similar, and is there other things I should change or have to modify?
It should be similar, just make sure all the wires go where they are supposed to go.
I’ve gotta do a motor swap soon.
yes most are a common mount setup
Lol at the 2 neighbors.
Still have that 80s Murray riding mower?
nope
Great video where did you order the engine from?
my local Briggs and Stratton Dealer
The box said Briggs and stratton, I'd say probably Kohler
to each his own but i believe you could fix one cheaper most ofthe time it some simple causing the tbl. but no oil is a another ball game
Well done!
Why would you not power wash it before tackling the swap? That thing is nasty underneath.
too many lawnmowers come through for me to fix, I can't clean them all it would make a huge mess
Crazy they do not come factory threaded.
Thanks bud.
Thanks for watching
looks like a sand blaster would best on somthing like this be a lot quicker
Nice mower!
Jeff's little engine service said............ 25 Horsepower V Twin RIDER Lawn mower model Motor ("Same as All HP models") So is this the same process to R&R an 18.5 Horsepower Briggs and Stratton motor??
pretty much they use the same mounting bolt holes
@@JeffsLittleEngineService
Great thank you.
A low oil shutoff like on some Honda engines would of saved him a lot of money and by the way a great video i enjoyed it a lot and Merry Christmas
Thank you, Merry Christmas!
hunter1953 - Hinda = #1
just a glance at a dip stick ----- not that much tbl.??????
Hope it is better than the 20HP twin I had. Thy had air pockets in the cam and blew the engine with 320 hours on it. They said I got dirt in the engine, but you can see the air pockets in the cam. I still have the engine. BRIGGS would NOT do ANYTHING about it. They didn't want even talk to me about it. They had a lot of those bad engines a few years back. Don't forget the plastic flywheel they use!
yikes!
Could you put a push mower engine in it I know it would be slow thought but.....
yes you probably could with modifications, that would be cool!
I hate when the tap hits my shaft! Lmao 😂😂😂
dos any body no the length of transmission belt for a craftsman LT1000
95 X 1/2 on drive belt
I’ve always bought Briggs and Stratton. Do you think Briggs and Stratton are still making quality products Jeff? What are your thoughts?
Yes I am still a fan of Briggs engines
Jeff's Little Engine Service do you need to run a valve saver lead substitute in the petrol for older Briggs engines?
Kohler is the best
Briggs & Strap On lol
I’m going to buy a v twin diesel for mine huskavarna
Get a Kawasaki
Why the old engine looks ok?
The crazy customer wanted a new engine.
@@JeffsLittleEngineService ahh thank you for your comment i love your video's
Thank you for your videos I have two mowers I need to work on. And this should help. I have working mows but it's always good to have a back up or two. Thanks again.
