Tunnel Ram, Big Block Gas Miser?- Here's Our Plan

  • The 600 CFM vacuum secondary Holley is one of the most common and street friendly carbs on the market. But, when you double them up on a dual quad or Tunnel Ram intake manifold, their factory calibrations are way off to the rich side. Here's how we are modifying these carbs to achieve maximum gas mileage as Slaghammer gets closer to her 2000 mile round trip on Power Tour.

    I dont believe uncle Tony said anything bad about me at all in this video regarding the mower carb deal. I think a lot of folks like to pit us against each other online - we don't always agree, but nobody ever does on everything.
    We're on the same team here - eliminating the black box magic of carburetors and making classic cars attainable to the common man.

      Any chance you'll let someone neutral run an entire tank through that Maverick? Find a respected youtuber or auto journalist and let them drive a tank through it while you ride along. People who make these claims never seem to want to let the magic out into the real world which makes it seem like they're all fakes. This is your chance to prove you're not one of the fakes. Maybe Uncle Tony or Steve Magnante would do the honors? I bet a gofundme would raise all your expenses plus some fun money for your roadtrip in about a day. Step up! Your turn at bat!

      @@jonathangehman4005 I'll probably run it on power tour - if you watch the video you will see that hypermiling was not my intent in the slightest, it just happened. I dont want to be personally wrapped up in all that Tom foolery - I originally did it because folks said a lawn mower carb couldn't run a car engine.
      If someone wants to copy me, by all means - probably be hard to replicate my electronics that bridged the gap though since I'm a programmer by day.
      Nothing goes without a trade off either - although it wasn't a road hazard, I also probably only had 100hp at my disposal vs the normal just over 300 that engine puts out.

      What Luke did was fun and really interesting to watch. But, it was just an experiment. Eventually it isn’t much fun having an engine that can make a few hundred horsepower limited to 40 or so hp.
      For a real street setup you’d have to figure out a way to go from a small single barrel like the lawnmower carb to something like a regular 4 barrel. At the end of the day it’s a hard transition to make and have something that runs good everywhere, makes good power, and gets good economy.

    • @NightWrencher
      @NightWrencher 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NBSV1 definately a good experiment. You could replicate it by bearly touching the throttle, just enough to get you going and you might have a similar result. Moral of the story, stick with a smaller carb, keep your foot out of it.

    Didn't think I'd see a UTG video start with a offhanded reference to ThunderHead289. While super-duper fuel economy tricks aren't really covered here unless they're being disproven, ThunderHead's videos do a solid job of explaining how and why the lawn mower carb works on a Ford 302 the way it does, with some good carburetor theory to boot, which is always useful. While his specific lawn mower carb setup might not be feasible for most people to build, it could help get the ball rolling for some smart people to make something cheap and simple enough for the layman to build and install in a pinch.

      Really easiest way with most older cars to get better mileage is to just drive 50(theres a sweet spot for most cars and its around there, manuals used to have the number listed for the car at least older alfas).
      I forget how fast robot cantina got the insight with a predator up to but it was more than 60 anyway. They're putting a supercharger on it now(with fuel injection), for no particular good reason but its a fun project.

      I find in my area, most of the cars have multiple underlying issues for driveability. They think it's the carb of course, but i check compression, ignition timing with advance and for vacuum leaks. I usually find 1 or all 3 of them have issues which seem like carb tuning problems. Address everything under the carb and ignition first to make sure you are not trying to tune a broken engine. Then mess with the carb

    Holley's are the best carb filing the main body is a must. Another trick is to drill a hole in each primary throttle plate to maintain a proper idle without adjusting idle screw too much. Large duration cams suffer from that. Doing that will prevent the engine from drawing fuel from the transition circuit at idle because the throttle plate are opened up to far which if it does will cause a bog or lack of fuel until it starts to draw fuel from the main jets.

    If you are restricting the Idle Air Bleeds it's because it is idling LEAN not rich. You're restricting the AIR in the emulsion and richening the mixture. Dual Vac Sec carbs idle LEAN on a 2x4 setup because the vacuum signal is now split between 8 venturis not 4 and the signal is very low causing the engine to idle lean, not rich. If you had an A/F gauge you'd see that. It can run rich if you start turning in the idle speed screws, thus opening the throttle blades past the transfer slots and drawing too much fuel from the intermediate circuit and bypassing the idle circuit.

    A lot of people said I'd get worse MPG with a modified engine. I've had cars get better mileage once modified and tuned. My current slant six is a fitech 4 barrel, Aussie speed hurricane intake, aussiespeed headers, automatic long bed d150. OCG 1947 cam and 9.5:1 CR. 1.7/1.44 valves. Even with the locked out distributor at 16 degrees I got 19.7 mpg on the interstate. Usually around 13-14 in town hauling stuff.

    This type of attention to details is what a great deal of projects lack, all too often there is a tendency to overlook the subtleties of fuel and ignition systems, understanding how things actually work is a great deal of the equation.
    Learn how to make things work properly stock before you attempt modifications.
    Meanwhile just an observation:
    Mopar Al is quite a mechanic, I can see why you get along so well with him Tony, the Power Tour with "Slag Hammer" should be a hoot and a half, that car is so weird but loveable, only an old time/type gear head will appreciate it.

    Could the vibrations loosen up those tapped fuel restrictor ? Will you be using some kind of way to eliminate that possibility ? 1000 miles of rumbling big block v8 is quite a ride to get there. High RPM Racing a couple of times then another 1000 miles back home. Im just asking cause we had a 68 Charger R/T with 440ci 4bbl and riding at the track with 3.91 gears got the RPM to steady 3500+ range and i noticed snapping the trottle at the track started going wrong suddenly. The choke screw on the 750 DP Holley had loosen from vibrations and the choke closed down. By the time i got to my racer parking spot, the oil was full of gaz. I know the choke is external part but i wouldnt want SlagHammer to have an issue down the road. Take it more as a reminder. Im sure you will be already extra precautious about those restrictors or anything else.

    • @NightWrencher
      @NightWrencher 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You really shouldnt be drilling out your throttle blades. If you NEED more air at idle(like if you had a huge cam), you should upgrade to a 4 corner idle carb or at least a larger carb to give you more area around the throttle blades.

    • @ironpanda6579
      @ironpanda6579 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeh that was my point using a valve on the carb pvc port to let a little extra in rather than drilling the blades demon has the idle easy air jet in the main body to adjust air rather than drilling as well

    Maybe I'm missing something. If there are two carbs, why are they running rich? You'd think the vacuum at idle would be half on each carb compared to what it would be with a single carb. So you'd have less fuel getting sucked in from each carb to offset the fact that there are twice as many carbs.
    Edelbrock, I believe, but it could have been another company, made an inline dual quad complete setup that came with the intake and two specially selected carbs. But I never knew how they differed from standard carb meant for single carb intakes.

    Cool project. I think some people don't realize that it takes a certain amount of power to move a certain amount of weight, keep the engine running and fight aero and rolling resistance. It doesn't matter if you do it with a lawn mower engine or a twin turbo 900 cubic inch allow racing engine....it will still need hypothetically 25 hp to roll 60 mph. the only thing we can change is how efficiently we make the required 25 hp and wether or not the engine will be damaged from running overly lean.

      Get 4 2" aluminum 4 hole AFB spacers , and 8 lengths of aluminum tubing in the height of your choice . Bolt two of the spacers to the manifold , and insert the tubes , and TIG weld them in .
      Then set the other w spacers on top , and TIG weld them in .
      Viola , a long ram intake the same way the Ramchargers did it in the 1950s !
