    Your experience highlighted the biggest issue when travelling on trains these days: the casual disregard TOCs have for running their trains on time. Just imagine the stress you would have been under if you were heading to an airport to catch a plane?

    • @andrewlong6438
      @andrewlong6438 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Planes are often late and they have a huge amount of contingency built in to allow for taxing onto main runaway, and waiting to come down to the ground. You can get stressed driving to the airport to catch a flight and it’s not unheard of to get caught up in a traffic jam!

      An exercise like this one assumes one of the two parties has access to a car which will be usually be the winner compared with taking a train or bus. A fairer comparison would be between a hired car or taxi and a train or bus. Need to compare costs of two modes as well as car park costs and congestion costs.

      A lot of issues on that line stem from the signalling that is prone to issues plus a lot of the line is single track towards Exeter so that doesn't help if trains have to wait for one coming the other way. Naturally there's no money to fix the issues permanently so it's just repaired as best as possible. The trains themselves are at least reliable so that's something

      @@andrewlong6438Trains also have contingency time in their timetable, around 5 minutes for every hour (car drivers should learn from them). It's even longer at the weekend.

    Yes, important to keep as many trains as possible running on time if the service frequency is every 15 or more minutes.
    Also highlights the need for automated trains as removing the driver removes a major cost allowing shorter trains to run at greater frequency on lines with excess capacity. Better service results in more use, but it is important that the network be a grid with greater grid line density with higher population density. Great Britain has many open and closed lines that could be used to form the grid. The East-West between Cambridge and Oxford is an example of reviving a line to establish a grid.

    UK railway signalling is complicated Paul. There's a whole Wikipedia page about it. When you read it you realise driving a train is really hard! Anyway, signal was meaningless could have been a freight train. Now Real Time Trains would definitely help.

    Delays are the worst. But really trains mostly shine when you're in a high traffic area where cars are more likely to face unexpected delays, so taking them between 2 small cities with no big city in between, it's not surprising the car will win out, since this is its optimal environment.

    I enjoy watching you guys!
    I am excited for a long 18 day train trip in April. Spending two nights in each city I will be going from upstate to NYC, DC, New Orleans, LA where I will be staying on the Queen Mary, Seattle, Chicago and home.
    Of course a car would be faster and a plane fastest but the train is scenic and relaxed. Rebecca didn't have to worry about operating a motor vehicle (something I've always hated) and got to look at the countryside passing. Also, 7 bucks is cheatper than car ownership and insurance and you still both got there about the same time.

  • @Crepello100
    @Crepello100 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I've done this route both by train and car and both are fast, like by car 60mph most of the way if no traffic. The train gets up to 90 but that takes a while as it's uphill to Grateley. Of course it helps if you know when the train is leaving (or supposed to!). The real problem with the train is Beeching screwed it up by singling the Exeter-Salisbury section with very few passing places, so if any train is late it scews up everything for hours afterwards. The train's more fun though, or was when they still used the big diesels.

    Update on my A to Z in London. As you probably know, there is an Andover Road in Bromley. In my A-Z, it's between Anderson Way and Anerley / the Mitre. I pretend to travel from 12 to 9pm/21.00, and on that day I started in Anchor street and ended in Anerley Road / Worbeck Road with a lot of walking in Bromley because of all the Anerley stops. In real time the day lasted for 8 hours 56 minutes, so almost the whole day. Usually a day lasts between 7.5-8.5 hours, so this is good.

      The railway use to go virtually everywhere, but was severely cut back in the sixties with 4500 mile of track being ripped up and 2500 staions closing. • @davidrumming4734
      @davidrumming4734 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      UK is actually poor for railway travel.
      Plagued by strikes and unreliable trains.
      And as another poster pointed out, we used to have local rail links “everywhere”…..almost all ripped up during the 1960s (and early 70s).
      That was the generation before me, and to me it seems completely odd and sad that we had such an infrastructure and ripped it up.
      In many places, railway bridges were also torn down so making re-installation of the line way to expensive.
      People here outside London often have to travel miles by car or bus, to reach a train station.
      The downgrade to little more than main lines means if your lucky the train journey is roughly the same time as by road….but if the position of the station and lines are wrong it can end up taking 3h todo what a car journey can do in 45min.
