Ethan Phillips is another that has just been delisted from Hawthorn. 197cm key back who played 1 game after being signed as a top up replacement for James Blanca this preseason. I haven’t seen a link to WC, but he’s a strong VFL performer and would probably be the best on the market.
@TrueEagleAFL Waalitj Marawar midfielder Luke Edwards has decided to step away from the AFL after working with the club to map his future. Honestly, Darling, Gaff, Jones, Witherden, Rotham not playing is going to really enhance my WCE experience next year. Those 5 were frustrating the hell out of me.
Second comment I've received asking for this (apologies if it was you both times I've actually forgotten). I think it's a great idea and I'll work on it soon
I reckon this could be the format... Best 23 for 2027, with no one born before 1996. Forget about anyone older. If they're still going in 2027, they're a bonus. What does our best side look like with the likes of Ryan, Duggan, Owies, Cole, Baker, Graham, Waterman and Allen as the senior group aged 28-30? Hopefully we have Hough, Jack Williams, Bazzo, Chesser, Dewar, Hewett, Long, Maric, Ginbey, Reid and Hall as the group beneath that, aged 21-24, all with 50-100 games under their belt by that point. The exercise gives me some cause for optimism, because it shows that we do actually have a skeleton of something to work with. But it certainly highlights the areas we need to strengthen, both with kids in the draft and more experienced readymades... tall defender, ruck, midfield depth.
Good work. I used to scroll by this channel until I realized the BF connection recently. Carrol looks alright to me, generally gets in good positions and makes good decisions, a step up from Trew at the very least. Knobel is worth talking to and I get the feeling the Eagles are a fair way down the road with Clurey as depth who wont shit the bed if Gov gets injured. It's a toss up whether to go for depth for a couple of years or hope a young bloke like DGB will improve in a different environment. This time of the year is usually a time for deluded optimism but the recent trade week has put a dent in that.
Carroll and Prior would be my first choices as DFAs, in that order. We need to thicken the soup in the midfield. I'm surprised Carroll was delisted. He's a good size, tackles well and is clean in traffic. He's not quick, but he moves well. He reminds me a bit of Jarryd Lyons. Lane is a good shout. But we need to cut 3-4 ruckmen at the end of the year, because we have 6-7 and none of them are starting rucks.
Max knobel. Freo delisted the 20 year old ruckman from Vic with the intention of re-rookieing him via the rookie draft. He has some good hitout numbers in his wafl games, would be a great fit as a young future #1 ruck option for us and put a lot of pressure on Barnett
Id like to see DGB and Carroll as first choice delisted free agents. Right age. It looks like Carlton are unhappy to see Carroll go. Parfitt would be great aswell. Highlights look great but yeah that's all I've seen of Carroll. They all look solid and would fit straight in. Then keep pick 12 and 26 to target a talented mid plus a key defender. And of course we would love Malakai the Champion!
Ideally id go for Trevaglia at pick 12 with his marking skills and attacking run out of defence, who can also play wing and mid is that right? Then him and Maric could rotate around at times. The other option is Bo Allen who can then rotate around with Ginby. At pick 26 id go the best available mid. Hopefully a starter big body player like Cooper Hynes, or the silky skills if Xavier Lindsay. If they get snapped up then Tom Gross. Any others your thinking as the hard ball winner too feed the ball out? That could be Bo Allen and Ginbey I spose hmmmmmm 🤣
I think the lists need to be finalised on Oct 31, which is when the DFA window opens. If the Luke Edwards decision is still being waited on, I could see us rookie listing him this year
J Baker was elevated when we took Livingston and Dewar is still Rookie B. (We might elevate Dewar if we pick Champion as rookie B). Talking about WCE need a KPD, we should consider our second pick for K. Gerreyn (or get trade for an extra pick for the purpose). Gerreyn can play forward, ruck and defence; powerful, very good at contest and ground work as a big man, not to say good in overhead mark as well.
Disagree on Gerreyn. Hes more of a fwd/ruck which we are already massively stocked for. Better off targeting an actual KPD tbh. Mraz, O'Farrell and Barrat are the 3 id be targeting
@@stallon720 Did he play KPD for WA U18? He is known to be able to play anywhere. This is also why I like him to get into the WCE as he also read the game very well.
@@Gnowop3 Hes more known as a fwd/ruck, likely will be just a forward in the AFL as hes a bit short to be a ruckman these days. If we want a KPD there are far better options than to try to change a KPF
I hope we don’t get too many. We already have a list full of average players and I don’t want to win a few extra games and have a ceiling of 6th. Which is what will happen if we keep ignoring the draft and bringing in average guys who played with superstars
I reckon if we have 4 draft picks it would be good. Then follow that with a couple of experienced guys coming in as delisted free agent. Are there enough spots. If the free agents were youngish and talent then we're adding to our side.
West Coast should do what North Melbourne did ask for couple of extra list spots try out some delisted and rookie players have the salary cap now wouldn’t cost much also help out there WAFL team
Michael Prior. My claim to fame is that I umpired him at juniors when I was a couple of years older than him. Interesting to se him develop and then his kid.
@@russellhanley4417 he went pick 4 in the draft from memory. which was a surprise. on the journey he did a knee reconstruction. eventually ended up at Eagles. As a youngster for Noranda pre 15 years old, he played as a fast wingman that had skills but played very wide. Avoided physical inside work. I didn't think he was in the best couple of players for Noranda. His teammates became ok players at WAFL, whereas Prior would have easily played 100 games at AFL if not for injuries. Geez he is 51 now. What does that mean for me.
I think you could do a lot worse than Denver GB. He is athletic, gets to contests is a good defender over head. His kicking can be good but is punctuated by occasional abaolute shockers, his decision making under pressure has been suspect, handballing to other players in worse positions or dump kicking towards the middle rather than towards the boundary when rushed have been common errors but he is still relatively young and would have something to prove. He was always the first guy dropped and has had little continuity. Injury at the start of this year really hurt a decent chance to cement a spot at the Hawks. He is very aggressive, a trait that the WC backline could use.
DGB would not have cemented a spot in the hawks spot in the side, he hasnt earnt it. He doesnt even play well in the VFL. The guy despite having 4 years in the AFL now still cant run out a game, he has no tank, and with no tank he cant use any of his intercepting or defending abilities. If he didnt like it at the Hawks so didnt try then he wouldve asked for a trade, instead the more likely reason is hes a lazy trainer.
Could the Luke Edwards issue potentially be related to Venables and McKenzie (I think) taking legal action against West Coast and the AFL over their treatment concerning concussion? Sounds to me like we're being cautious
@@TrueEagleAFL Is it fair to conclude that if you're signing guys during the SSP, you've missed out on the most attractive DFAs? Surely it's better to pick the best youngish players looking for a home and get them signed as DFAs as quickly as possible?
@@BigCatinBKK I would agree. Sometimes it would require some urgency, like with Carroll perhaps who has other offers, but in the case of Clurey there's probably no risk. DGB is one I'd imagine we want to see train first, but if he has interest from Carlton too that makes it tricky
There’s definitely something fishy going on with Luke Edwards as he hasn’t played a decent quarter of footy since his freak final quarter against Richmond in 2020 something
